I got so excited today when i saw this really clean and NC. I couldnt wait to give him a thumbs up or something. After crawling trough traffic for an eternity, and being within sight of eachother. I was sure it was gonna happen. And then it did, traffic lined up just right, however this guy would not pull up next to me. I JUST WANTED TO SAY HI This isnt even the first time this has happened. Ive daily driven a NB for the past 7 years now, and to this day, ive never gotten a waive from a NC driver. EVER. Im done being hurt, fuck that gay car, you guys can go fuck yourselves for all i care. I cant even!

JR12's been used in mrs community after a greek time attack guy got them. They were said to be really solid and although I know they're fake volks I think they look great.

TRMotorsport C1/C1M if you're in NA. (They're Tire Rack's "house brand" so probably aren't available elsewhere.)

Good wheels, strong, light, and cheap, and I think they're pretty good looking too. I had the C1Ms (Spec Miata fitment) on my Mazda2, which takes the same fitment as Miatas, and they were great. (Pic related.)

A few questions lads
What is the average insurance I'd be looking at for an MX-5 if I'm 22 a year after I've passed my test?

This is a stretch, but any knowledgeable Miata bros in Seattle know how to change a head gasket in a reasonable amount of time?

PO said radiator had some corrosion causing the coolant to look gross and I didn't notice the white smoke from the exhaust until the next week. Luckily I didn't drive it much and it never overheated, so I'm just praying the PO didn't overheat the fuck out of it like the retard he is and the head isn't warped at all.

Please send prayers if anything. I miss my Miat already. All I can do is sit in it on the side of the road where I parked it.

Do you like Fiatas?
>>
>>17102606
Head gasket is super duper easy to fix. Like, a wrench and an hour kind of easy.
Just make sure you keep everything CLEAN and get ALL of the old gasket out of the head. I used a tooth brush and rubbing alcohol I think.

If you have problems beyond that I dont know
>>
>>17102615
It looks like a fucking clown shoe
>>
>>17102664

I mean...

I've had multiple people tell me that I should be doing much more while I'm working on it. Things like water pump, timing belt, thermostat, crank/cam seals... I don't think just putting a new head gasket on and calling it good would be good enough. I need to properly torque the bolts as well. I don't believe it's as easy as you're making it out to be at all.
>>
>>17102803
I replaced about 6 HG's on various NA6's.

3 on personal owned

They take about an hour and follow >>17102664 advice and keep everything clean.

Yes, you SHOULD do a belt, pump, seal etc while the head is off, but if they are in good shape you can usually hold off on replacing them.
>>
>>17102803
The only reason they say that is because the Miata engine is assembled in such a way that you might as well do all the other shit while you're at it, since you'll have to remove some of those components to get at the head gasket anyway.
>>
>>17102803
Also according to the torque guide I, have it's 60 ft/lbs in 3 steps for the head bolts, if you didn't know or w/e

9 10
5 6
1 2
4 3
8 7

Seems to be the torque sequence
>>
>>17102818
>>17102819

Wait /really/?
As long as the head isn't warped at all I can actually just clean off the old gasket, slap a new one on, and reassemble? Then put in new coolant and oil?

Do I not have to find the cause of the problem to begin with? Like how do I even begin to do that? It has to be a cooling issue for it to even happen right? Does anything other than the head bolts have to meet a specific torque specification?
>>
>>17101296
Most Miatas will be better taken care of than a vapewagon. They will also be way more fun than a regular Impreza. If you're looking at WRX or STIs, the Miata won't be as fast in a straight line, but it will destroy the Subaru in the corners.

Miatas are more fun to hoon too because you can drive them harder without shit breaking, you can put the pedal to the floor without going to prison, and they fly under most cops' radars, especially if you're in an area where they're mostly popular with seniors.
>>
>>17102870
Well, the way Mazda modified the cooling system when they made the 1.6 a longitudinal engine causes the rear 2 cylinders to get hotter than the front 2 so sometimes(albeit very rarely) the head gasket fails in the rear of the block under normal operating conditions.

I've heard the same condition exists in the 1.8 but I've only worked on 1.6's

Other causes are failing pump (they are cheap might as well buy a new one anyways) and bad radiator

I've done the whole "pull head clean and slap it back on with new head gasket" thing twice now, and both have about 15k miles with no problems so far

My NA is going to need brakes soon, so I figure I'd might as well upgrade while I'm at it. What's a decent rotor and pad setup that won't cover everything in brake dust, but still has better stopping power than factory-ish parts?
>>
>>17099062
always, and it makes my day every time :)
>>
>>17102870
And everything has a specification anon, I only have the head bolt specs and on my 1.6's the crank bolt is at 120 ft/lbs

You'll need to look around for the rest of the specs, or maybe someone here knows them if you care enough

This is actually amazing news. I was getting mentally ready to drop a few hundred dollars on replacing absolutely everything, getting the head machined, and buying tools. But if I can get by by just replacing the broken head gasket and /maybe/ the radiator and water pump, that's incredible.

I'll definitely look up the torque specs for everything and at least get that exactly.

But you guys definitely make me feel like I can just work in O'Reilly's parking lot for a couple hours and happily drive away and enjoy the rest of my day.

I'll do more supplementary research, but this definitely seems to not be as big of a deal as I initially feared it was.

Thanks guys.

It was bought as a parts car with a clean title and I never planned on fixing it.

Lo and behold I actually got bored enough to fix it and now I can't find the title so the car is useless now.

Don't know if it will fix the white smoke issue though. Keep us posted. And yeah if it's an NA you'll want to do the CAS O-ring too. They're only a few dollars and it only takes a couple extra minutes if you already have the head off. I suggest if you are going to do it in a parking lot bring a clean towel to lay over the open head to keep the dust out while you're working on the CAS and cleaning the cylinder head. Don't do it on a windy day.

Why do people feel the need to have an lsd on a car with 100hp to the wheels? So you can do donuts?
>>
>>17104899
Mazda says:
>The N in our model code has no specific meaning, It's just one part of our two digit model derivative.
N is their code for mx-5. mx-5 of course means Mazda eXperiment 5.

Some scholars, however, maintain that the N has a deeper meaning. One that Mazda will never disclose.

I just stumbled across a 2003 hardtop with a headliner and defroster that is color matched with my car, the top looks like it's in pristine condition and apparently has been sitting in the guys warehouse for a while, he was asking $1500 for it and I only got him down to $1400. But do you guys think it's worth it? And I've read the the front latches on some of the newer 03 hardtops won't match up with the front striker plates on a 99-02 nb, is this true?

the thick exhaust is from no coolant, im having to cycle that through because i flushed it out when i was fixing some shit.

Took a vacation day yesterday to hang out with my two friends who were supposed to help me throw my roll bar in my Miata. Of course, the friend who is competent with cars and tools decides to bail last minute to hang with his fiance. Now it's just my clueless friend and I, and I know things are going to be super frustrating and will probably go pretty poorly if I try to do it with him. I've had this thing sitting around forever because people always bail on me last minute when they say they'll help me put it in. 5k Canadian is like 4k American? Thats alright. Figure the roll bar and an "excellent condition" top is worth like $1500 right there. Paint and body looks nice, miles arent too high.

I'd look at all the maintenance things: brake fluid, radiator fluid, tire condition, rotor condition, clutch life. Check for oil leaks. Look for rust. Are the frame rails beat to shit? Those will be the haggling points. If everything looks good though I would just go for it.
>>

He got off at the same exit I did and stopped right next to me at the light. Beat him off the line in my 1.6 NA.

I had almost the opposite experience today while driving around DC with the top down.

>Cruising along in my 1.6 around 5 over
>Casually pass a lifted F150 bro
>He sees me
>Guns it up to 80 to blow past me and weave through the traffic

I still find it pretty funny how some car bros feel like they have to act aggressively just because they see somebody happy in a hairdresser's car.
>>
I might be able to get a free NA with a 5 speed and 1.6L engine.

Question: does it make sense to swap the drive train to a nb's 1.8l with a 6 speed for future mods?

One the one hand it's ~$1800 on ebay, and that's quite a lot for almost no improvement, on the other hand it seems to be a much better base for future upgrades.

How would you guys describe your shifter feeling in your NA? 1994 here with 93k. I've done the following in the past 1k miles:
>rebuild shifter with rebuild kit from Mazda and replaced turret oil
>replaced gear oil with Ford Motorcraft FS MT fluid
>replaced slave cylinder and master cylinder and upgraded to steel braided clutch line
>adjusted the take up in clutch pedal and have it so the clutch engages somewhere in the middle of the pedal travel (felt like shit before, like there was a shit ton of takup but the slave wasn't getting full travel.

All of these things have gave it drastically improved shifting feel, but there is an ever so slightly "notchy" feel when shifting into 2nd and 3rd. They go into gear fine, but it just doesn't feel like some other rwd manual transmissions I've felt. Anyone else have a kinda notchy feeling shift?

i like miatas, i think they would be a great project car, and i enjoy driving them, only problem is i can barely fit in them, in the NA and NB my knees are 9 and 3 oclock position on the side of the steering wheel and after about 30mins of driving my legs really start to hurt.

I know seat mods are pretty common? Would it be relatively possible to make the NA/NB more comfortable for me?
>>
So the crank pulley on my LNC 1.6 is starting to make a bit of a chirping sound and I'm wondering if maybe the bolts came loose. Do I NEED to remove the pulley to inspect everything, or can I just remove the belt and torque everything to spec? The engine has really low mileage, so I'm not sure what the cause might be.

If you're really that tall there isn't much you can do to sit comfortably.

I thought that was great, i'll definately do that whenever i see other mx-5's now.

Also, MAN. What a great car, I'm in love with it so bad. It's like a dream come true to own an mx-5.

If you see any wobble, and I mean any wobble on the crank pulley, avoid.

>Select all scoreboards

Kek. But seriously, check the crank pulley for slots - 4 slots is short nose, 8 is long nose. Google Short Nose Crank for info. Having JUST gotten my 1.6 back on the road after replacing the crankshaft due to a bent crank nose, trust me on this.

Decent on gas if you're sensible, especially for a 1.6/1.8. IIRC the ECU runs quite rich from factory, though.

Kek.

>Maintenance etc
Any/all regular maintenance is extensively documented, Mazda seems to still carry most parts for it - at least mechanically anyway. If it's not, there's a buttload of aftermarket support that likely rivals Hondas.

>Cost in general
Eh, most things are fairly simple fixes. Engine shares a few parts with Ford and other Mazda cars so there's a small amount of interchange. Same as any popular jap car, really.

Definitely go over it again. Check for chassis rust mostly. Can't avoid rust by the baby teeth, a touch of rust by the brake/clutch reservoirs, maybe a spot of oxidization in the boot by the battery.
Go by the VIN number if you're unsure, there was a documented cutoff between SNC and LNC. Pulley is the easiest way to tell.

Other than that nothing really springs to mind. Ask to take it for a test drive and have a local mech ready to do a quick lookover at the same time.

get a roll bar and reinforcement
youre gonna be driving a VERY SMALL CAR thats OLD
its gonna be wiggly and you will be crushed if you flip without a roll bar. hard tops wont save you.
>>
>>17122957
You're in a tiny little car barely taller than the average SUV wheel. It didn't exactly excel at tests when it came out (It wasn't bad, it just didn't set new records), but that was 27 years ago.

You could argue, however, with a huge advantage of visibility (Even more if you have a hardtop, practically sitting in a fishbowl), crash _avoidance_ is a plus.

Once you have a drive in one, you realize just how much more meat other cars have available to crumple.

ok so my last cylinder is still burning oil, but theres a 90 engine on cl for 100. says it "doesnt run well", but should i just nab it to see if i cant scrap something from it to fix my oil leak? the head gasket is new and the engines -supposed- to be newer so idk whats wrong desu
honestly im just starting to look at 1.8l swaps more and more, but i dont have the money for that yet and a 1.6l rebuild is way more attainable.
>>
>>17123075
Do a compression test you double nigger. Why is it burning oil? If it's bad rings then your compression will be low and you can *probably* just replace the rings, you don't need a 2nd broken engine to scrap for more worn parts.
>>
>>17123720
Also check the valves. I guess worn valve stems could cause oil to get in the combustion chamber. Pull the valves from the last cylinder and put a micrometer on them. The valve guides/ sleeves could be worn too.

so assuming i do a compression test and it points at the piston rings being fucked, how hard of a job is that to do? i can't really afford an expensive rebuild on this engine. i could reasonably do the stem seals, though.
>>
>>17125271
also forgot to ask; would a new valve cover gasket prevent oil from getting into the cylinder?
>>

You have to take it to a machine shop no matter what, so there's that piece of it.
Rebuilding the rest really isn't hard. Just watch youtube videos and hopefully have an experienced friend help.

so you know how much thats gonna run you? i know all shops have different quotes and all but still curious.

>>
>>17125469
>so you know how much thats gonna run you?
That's a really good question. It can cost anywhere between $800-2000 depending on your area. I live in the south where cost of living isn't shit, so I'm looking at around $800 to get them both inspected, do any repair work and getting some honing work done. I've heard of people getting charged a shitload more, though.
>also the only shop i can seem to find near me only does heads...
They should be able to point you to someone who does block work. It's really odd that they dont though.
>>
>>17125487
>I live in the south where cost of living isn't shit
i live in the south, too. hopefully this doesnt ramp up my price, because i can only really afford so much.
>They should be able to point you to someone who does block work. It's really odd that they dont though.
yea, i was surprised too. i dont dig having to take my head and block to different places, either.
>>
>>17125556
>i live in the south, too. hopefully this doesnt ramp up my price, because i can only really afford so much.
Texas and Florida. Both will have amazing shops that can do what you want for not very much (relatively)
>yea, i was surprised too. i dont dig having to take my head and block to different places, either.
I wouldn't. I'd take them both to one shop. Check the valves and engine bore ahead of time so you don't waste money.
>>
>>17125579
>Texas and Florida
im only really close to one and floridas a time anomaly
>Check the valves and engine bore
yea ill probably end up doing that within the next few days. i thought i checked both the head and block for warping and cracks but i guess i didnt check thoroughly enough... guess thats what i get for getting a 2k miata that "doesnt idle well"
>>
>>17125653
Honestly, if you're having this much trouble,
go but a new engine and drop it in.
It sounds like it would save you a fuckton of time and money.
>>
>>17125658
i was considering it, but 1.6l are hard to come by for some reason (???)
cl has a 1.8 but thatll be pricier than just buying a 1.6
>>
>>17125324
>take it to a machine shop no matter what
Why? Depends on what's wrong. He doesn't even know what's wrong.
>>17125434
Why do you think having the heads/ block machined is going to fix the problem? Is it gushing oil past the seal? Like I said, it could be the rings, the valve stems, could even be a bad pcv valve causing pressure to build up in the crankcase.
>>17125307
You already put a new valve cover on and it's still burning oil. So you know the anwer to that question.

Honestly my man you are in over your head I think. Sell the car or take it to a mechanic and tell him to fix the oil burning problem. Put it on a credit card.

You're about to dump $800 into machining heads when you have no idea that's even the problem. Wtf
>>
>>17125735
because i replaced the head gasket and its still burning oil in the fourth cylinder. the machining is a literal last ditch effort because the only thing im not comfortable with replacing myself is the piston rings.
i havent run it since i got a new valve cover gasket, either.
i replaced the pcv valve and its seal.

So you're gonna listen to this fucktard and have the head and block machined on a fucking whim that it's warped, spend $800 or more and still have the thing burn oil because the valves or rings are bad. Sounds like a great plan.
>>
>>17125810

If you want, take the engine apart again, check the block and valves. Consider how much work is needed on the engine and if it's over $1200, just buy a new engine and use the old one for parts.

Also, now that I've driven an NA with stock seats, I can confirm what I've been saying the whole time. 6'2 is well over what would be comfortable to drive the car. Even with a smaller wheel, I wouldn't be able to press the brake pedal properly, and heel toe shifting is out of the question. I would say 6 feet is the absolute maximum without modification of the seat/ rails. (the top of the windshield is also a visibility hazard and I had to duck down to see properly)

anyone ever ordered from rev9 to usa?

Hey guys, 3 things, mostly "Is this normal or is my car about to blow up?" stuff. '01 NB if it makes any difference.

1) When sitting at an idle, the engine feels rough, I can feel the vibration through the seat even though the idle is fairly constant. I imagine it's normal for a small roadster, but just want to be sure it's not a sign I need new motor mounts or something.

2) The idle does, however, start to fluctuate when I turn on the HVAC blower fan. Especially if the position selector is set to defrost or defrost/feet. This is with the A/C switch off, just turning the blower motor on causes the car to start idling even more rough and the RPM's will jump up and down.

3) When taking off from a light the car, sometimes, will start chugging like it's about to die. The engine doesn't feel like it's missing or anything, it almost feels like the clutch is slipping. But then I give it more gas, it goes just fine. I've read similar things from other Miata owners, but I'm still puzzled what it actually is.
>>
>>17129509
Yeah it worked fine, why wouldn't it?
