What are some good sites to score an NA?
Craiglist has really slim picking in my area.
>>
>>17046990

There's no way to buy a good cheap NA anymore besides sheer dumb luck. You literally have to pay $5000 minimum for a truly clean example, at which point you may as well save up $2000-4000 extra to buy a clean NC owned and maintained by boomers.

Thanks lad.

Part of the reason I got a good deal is the fact that he sold it in October/Fall season.

That is the best season to buy a sports car. Also having a lil haggling skills doesnt hurt either.

If I sold it right now I could make a lil profit but thats not why I purchased it in the first place!

Guy thought it had a blown head gasket and didn't have time to fix it. Took it home and compression results were fine. Also scored a hardtop for $150 a few weeks later. It has a huge ass crack in it but I just gorilla taped it and it's been holding fine for a few months now.

My dad recently bought this bad boy from our neighbors for 1.2k. It wasn't in the best condition when we got it (water pump was fucked as was the shifter, one stud snapped on each front wheel, one stud stripped to shit in the back, rear driver side fender and bumper fucked from what I assume is a parking accident, driver side window smashed, missing panel under steering column, blinking airbag light, burned out reverse light, ac doesn't work, burned out headlight and the shocks are fucked) so far we've fixed everything except the rear stud, ac, shocks, reverse light and body work. Though the stud and shocks will be dealt with later today.

Youre 100% right.
Anyone in this thread showing off their sub 3k Miata has a shitbox that's either a 1.6, non LSD, or has a beat up body/interior.

5k for a decent NA with LSD, good paint/body, and an OBD1 1.8.

Is the torque bump really worth getting screwed out of 50-60 cents extra per gallon? Gas is $2.19 where I live, but premium wildly varies - $2.69 all the way up to $3.04 at one place.

Maybe if it was .20c more than regular I'd see the logic, but paying 20% more for fuel in a fucking Miata is laughable.

No, anon, the it's sadly not. NAs have increased in popularity substantially in the past five years or so, and while you can find cars substantially cheaper than that, what you consider "nice" or "mint". These cars are old. You're not going to find a car that doesn't have a leaky rack, clean paint, nice interior etc for less than $4,500. "Mint" cars don't need $1500 worth of steering and suspension parts right off the bat. They don't have leaky front seals and rear mains and need a clutch replacement and timing belt service immediately after purchase. A ready to drive, needs nothing NA is $5,000 minimum. Jose's "proyecto" drift missle with fresh paint and a hard top isn't "nice"
>>
>>17047006
anon is right. I had to pay 3000$ for a 1990 with a alright coat of plastidip. it looks good enough that no one makes fun of me but its going to need paint next year. its worth the memes tho.

Basically what I did was I mounted generic Bridgestone all season tires on my stock daisy wheels. Then I went and bought a separate set of Kosei wheels and mounted 205s on them. I just switch between the two sets of wheels depending on what I am going to be doing with the car. If I am going to be commuting for the week, I just throw on the Bridgestone 185s. If I am going to be hooning or making plans to track it, I just switch to 205s. I think that is the best approach.

Sounds about right. I paid $5,000 for my 94 M Edition. 80,000 miles. One owner. Came with a stack of papers showing everything that had ever been done to the car and all the recommended factory maintenance. Owned it for 4 years now and all I've put into it is a new muffler and a radiator.

This isn't my first Miata, and my friends already have a few in various conditions and milage. I'm familiar with what they cost. I also live in Phoenix where EK and EG Honda civics that aren't falling apart cost 4500. Keep in mind that I specifically wanted a 1994-1995 factory LSD car which greatly reduces my selection on the market. I didn't just want an NA Miata, I wanted the one I got, and I would have spent up to $7000 if it was even less mileage, better condition, more records etc. Not everyone on /o/ is a 19 year old college student, anon.

Most likely, but not necessarily depending upon how you took the corner. See these links to find out! Especially the 1st one:

https://www.miata.net/faq/Miata90-97A3.pdf

https://www.miata.net/faq/america/

>Does having an LSD make any noticeable difference in daily driving?
It depends on how you drive. Honestly, if you have to ask, it probably doesn't make a difference - I'd say even over 80% of "car enthusiasts" wouldn't notice a difference, but I find a mechanical LSD to be absolutely critical because I like doing dumb shit for kicks. Oh, and it's also easier to recover from an accidental slide with an LSD (if you know what you're doing), so there's that.

I was looking into the NA, and am considering, but I had a question about its engine.
The NA with the 1.6L weighs around 2100lbs, makes around 116 horsepower, but has MPG in the high 20s, low 30s if you baby it.
A 1994 5th gen civic ex sedan with a 1.6L engine makes around 125 hp, weighs more at around 2400lbs, similar 0-60 time, and has MPG rating in the mid 30s - mid 40s.

From a technical standpoint, why does the Miata have a lower mpg, is weaker, all while weighing less?

I'm not trying to bash it, I'm looking at a decent '96 Miata for around $3k, I'm just genuinely curious, from a technical standpoint.
I'd be looking to daily it, so mileage is a bit important to me.
>>
>>17075728
Because the Miata is a sports car with short gearing for quick acceleration. It's designed for the touge, where a high top speed doesn't matter but accelerating out of a corner does.

The Civic is an econobox for moving losers back and forth between their shitty apartment and their shitty job.
>>
Guys I found a clean 92 all OEM with 100k miles for 3500. Guy says need to replace suspension and brakes but outside that it's ok. Gonna take a look at it.

What should I know? How much would those parts run me?
>>
>>17075728
Gearing. The NAs technically only have 4 gears, the 5th being just an OD to keep the revs low on the highway. It's meant to be wringed out in every gear so you aren't going to get fuel consumption. In fact, it was probably never even prioritized. But I do agree with you. My NA gets pathetic mpg
>>
>>17075750
>"...moving losers back and forth between their shitty apartment and their shitty job"
I mean, a civic and miata are around the same price if both in good condition and similar miles
It doesn't show a sign of wealth or anything, the only friend I know who owns an NB Miata is a bagger at walmart, sooo...
and if it means anything in terms of acceleration, the 0-60 time on both the 1994 civic EX sedan and a 1994 1.8L miata are both 8.4 sec. go with the older 1.6L miatas and you start going into the 9s.

>>17075791
So, that being the case, would a theoretical engine swap between the 2 really do much in terms of gas mileage?
>>
>>17075870
>So, that being the case, would a theoretical engine swap between the 2 really do much in terms of gas mileage?

Transmission swap needed, my NA gets about 3100 revs at 60mph. A 6 speed seems to fix this.
>>
>>17074454
Rumor has it that replacing just the soft top is a huge pain in the ass. Takes several hours even days, especially if its ur first time. I think you'd be better off just looking for a used one of CL that comes with the frame and rails and all that stuff.

i preferably want an NA. if i can't find one though I should be going for the NC right?
>>
>>17076704
It comes down to personal preference man.

NA is without a doubt the classic Miata

NB is without a doubt a significantly better NA but it lacks that classic Miata charm

NC is basically a better NB (primarily in regards to safety and chassis rigidity) but is even further removed from the original NA. It's probably the best "street car" generation available when you compare cost/performance. Pretty sure the son of a bitch comes with 205 tires stock.

If you're going to be wrenching on it a lot and tinkering with it for fun (turbocharging, stancing, slamming it, etc...) then definitely go with a NA

>NB lacks that classic Miata charm
if your idea of charm does not extend beyond electrically-actuated headlights.
The NB is a much better car if you want to do the kind of spirited driving (read: hooning and autocross) that people are buying up now classic and desirable NAs for. It's also a slightly more civilized car in general with less rattling and creaking.

>>17074319
You can feel the difference if you driving on windy roads. Lifting at 60 mph on a gentle highway bend is enough to provoke a reaction from the rear in an NB, but all the Miata diffs react differently. It also helps if you actually start sliding and while driving in snow.

Replaced battery that was leaking acid from the terminals. Tied down OFFICIAL MIATA BATTERY with a nylon(?) fastener.

Everything seems super dope, aside from the fastener moving towards the positive terminal.

Do I have anything to worry about? Will it like catch fire since it's also contacting the metal of the car? I'm really paranoid about it. Like the battery itself is held down fine it's just the fastener contacting the positive terminal I'm worried about. Am I being retarded?
>>
Lets say I got this for 2500$ and I'm already planning a seat/interior swap for whatever NA i get. Thoughts?

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/cto/6101548653.html
>>
>>17077127
Yeah but when you drive one you realize it's all there to make the driver feel like they're in a swoopy-fendered E-type Jag.

The NA is literally a bar of soap.

>>17077376
Nylon doesn't conduct electricity so I don't see what the problem is.
>>
>>17077581

See but I'm not sure if it's nylon to start with. Does it look like it is? Will it still be fine if the band going across the battery shifts enough to contact the positive and negative terminals simultaneously?

anyone have any recommendations of aftermarket racing seats to use?
i'm tempted to get a bride rep..
but i'd rather find a used version of a good seat, so what kinds of seats commonly come up on CL?
>>
>>17078779

This! I am interested too. Especially if it doesnt look like a straight up boy racer style seat. Something more subtle.
>>
Anybody with 6-speed NB can tell me how does the gearbox feels? in NA you basically get 4 short gears and 5th long, is the six speed similar in a sense that you get 5 short 1 overdrive?

If that's the case then i'm putting one in, na gearbox is already a blast to drive but adding one more fun gear should be even better, no?
>>
So after 4 months I finally got the miata I paid $500 for, to run.

So... I have to advance the timing waaaay to much to get any sort of snappy throttle response... almost sounds like its going to die when I slam it... suggestions?

it's a lot of work and money for basically zero gain

why is that? is the torque increase too small? If it isnt getting above 140lb ft i would agree but id still like to hear why?
>>
>>17082126
If your goal is throttle response and drivability over power gains, go for it. Otherwise there's not really anything to be gained over well sized plenum/TB setup.
>>
>>17082126
>I dont want turbo lag

Then run a t28.
>>
>>17082184
there isn't going to be an increase

if you want throttle response, just get a lighter flywheel

I ideally do want sharper response and a bit more torque but dont want forced induction or an engine swap.

Thats really nice for a 1.6 but I would very highly suggest at least going for a 1.8, youll greatly appreciate the bump in power and the torsen lsd
>>
>>17082251
Is there a guide somewhere on shit to look for on these cars? I've always been looking for them but never actually gone and tested one out.
>>
>>17082262
You're probably right but this car is a great price (I think) for how clean it is, and it's local and a super new listing.
>>
>>17082083
Sometimes paying more up front saves you money in the long run.
I don't know what could be causing your problem, sorry.
>>
>>17082263
It's a 92 so there's no possibility of SNC. Check for rust, but since it's in Oregon that shouldn't be an issue.

Worst problem you're likely to have is rotted bushings in the suspension because it's 25 years old, but that's not really anything to be worried about.

Ideally get it on a lift and try to move the wheels to see if the ball joints and tie rods are fine. You can probably take it to your local Midas or Big O or something for a quick check for a few bucks. Try calling your nearest store to see what there pricing is.
>>
>>17082287
All good, did some tests, might be the afm. Drove it around the block a couple times, and it /seems/ fine. The only real issue I see at this point is the crank pulley not centering causing it to spin hella wobbly looking.

When installing the pulley it felt like it was too big and just wiggled on nose. Almost like it was just hanging of the key.
>>
>>17082263
no lifter tick!! and the usual car checkup from my experience.

>>17082275
Honestly man youll regret it having to swap all the 1.8 running gear in if you want performance out of it, i would save up a few hunfred more and keep checking the new section until a clean 94+ shows up, offer the guy $2600
>>
>>17082306
The thing is I don't think I'll need to swap in an entire new powertrain because I have easily accessible, really twisty roads near me. Even my SV650S feels a little overpowered up in the mountains, like I'm not even close to digging into the power of the bike, so I feel like a slightly slower but really clean Miata would do fine for me.
>>
>>17078345

Put on radiator, fill it up with coolant so there's a bit in the funnel, turn on car, wait 15 minutes or so after it warms up, revving occasionally, turn the car off, put the stick in the funnel and take it all out, put radiator cap on.

Should be all good bro.

Bring a legit mechanic with you, one with professional gear to do standard tests in front of the owner. It helps if he says "You'll need to spend X dollars to fix Y problem"

Never appear too eager to buy and that you'd be williing to walk away.

DO NOT KEEP ALL OF YOUR MONEY ON YOU. Bring enough to pay full price if you need to. But only keep the minimum amount you'd like to pay on you- keep the rest in the car you traveled there in. Tell them "This is all the money I have on me" and literally turn your pockets inside out.

You've now made the floor and that is the figure you are dealing with. Instead of haggling down from the asking price the seller is now haggling up from the money you have on you.

Tie the haggling up into how much longer they might have to wait for the money. "I could go borrow $200 bucks from a friend around the block and be back here in 10 minutes; or I could drive an 2 hours round trip over where the only branch of my bank is to get $500"

The farther away it seems like you will go- the less likely the deal is to get done. Seller is likely to be impatient and just take the $200+ ASAP...all of which is actually in your car.
>>
>>17082838
because that's the safest you can be with that setup, since it works in tandem with your airbag
if you go for a 4 point harness, you'll submarine in the pedal box in a crash, and also get fuckbwd whiplash since you head snaps forward.
if you go for a 5 or 6 point, same problem, so you need a HANS device on a helmet to prevent it.

a 3 point is simple and works with your airbag to prevent all of the above on the street

Not my Miata unfortunately anon, but I want mine to look like that one. Those are turn signal intakes, and most are just for show and aren't actually ducted into anything. I can't find that exact one, the owner may have made it himself. The closest thing I seen like it are these http://www.mossmiata.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=120927 but the signal lamp isn't a nice circle like that one is.
>>
>>17082960
As legit of a mechanic as you can get...preferably someone who graduated from a school, is certified and/or works for a dealership.

When buying my Miata a few years back I found a Honda certified tech who had the day off and came with me. I drove him to and from the buy location he came with a bag of tools and testing stuff (particularly the diagnostic tester) and he tested it as well as test drove the car himself.

By the end of it I had a checklist of mostly small things wrong with the car that I was able to use to argue to bring down the price because they were things I'd need to pay for get fixed (the biggest of which was a recommended PCV valve replacement).

>>17082981
Not a terrible idea, but this goes into another tip. Depending on how "desperate" you are to buy the car...assess the seller himself. Ask them why they were selling it, what kind of life the car lived, what was the reason they owned the car, what they used it for, what they do for a living, what sort of person they are as a human- this sort of tells you what kind of person they will be to deal with and whether you can/should trust them.

At the end of the day sometimes its nice to feel like both people are walking away happy. You gave money to a good person who deserves it, and you walk away with the car you want.
