When they build a flawless and inexpensive robot that will get a truck through two foot deep mud and snow on temporary logging and oilfield roads, mount and adjust the full sets of tire chains that are absolutely required for offroad use, correctly spot the truck on worksites that are not standardized in any way, shape, or form, attach the correct temporary piping on non standardized wellheads and pipeline tie-ins, correctly configure the flow path, prime and operate the pressure pumping equipment to fill lines and safely pressure test the piping, analyze the current state of the well to determine possible and correct pump rates and whether it is safe to ignite the burner or not based on said well status, safely ignite the burner and control the air/fuel ratio based on the type of fluid that is being heated, make correct, safe on the fly adjustments to the fluid temperature and burner controls based on fluid type, burner performance, weather conditions and downhole pressures or vacuum, know when to stop the burner to cool it down properly with the remaining amount of fluid, write out an accurate ticket and reverse the whole process to get the equipment back to town safe and in one piece, I'll be worried about my job becoming automated.

Repostan'

How does time off work? Some forums and sites I've checked say before a year you'll probably get 1-2 days off every three weeks* , but it goes up slightly past a year since that's the magic number.
What do you guys even do with your money? I
know you essentially have to make trucking your life when you go OTR on a single or heavier, assuming you don't have a carrier that gets you home nightly.
If you're home less than half a week a month, you probably save it. Right? What do you do with it if you have nothing to really do with so little home time? Assuming you even own a home instead of doing the hotel game.
I'm heavily looking into truckan' since I'm not easily disturbed by much and long road hours, shitty pay the first year other fun commodities with trucking don't bother me since it's just the industry. Intending to go hazmat/tanker up in the northern border where it's nice and cold and icy and shitty. I want it to suck. Probably would like to unload my own freight.

>>
>>17032242
Depends entirely on the company/account.
I've done home every weekend, home every other weekend, and the standard 3 out-3 in. and some companies count a day as 24 hours, so if you get home Friday at noon, they expect you back Monday at noon. Others do calendar days, so if you got home Friday at noon, you'd be expected back Tuesday morning.

So I'm 20, quickly heading towards 21, and nothing I've ever tried in life worked out, no matter how much effort I put in. Thinking about becoming a trucker (US) because nobody loves me anyway so I'll be alone regardless of whether I'm in a home or a truck cab.

Fucking love semi trucks, don't mind driving for hours and hours, only thing so far that has kept me from being 100% serious about this is I feel like truckers will be replaced with automated vehicles in under 20 years.

Got my two years, so been looking for a better paying jerb. Haven't found any amazing gigs yet, my top two choices so far are
Crete, they got the contract at my local Walmart DC and since I want to end up at Walmart maybe already working at a DC will get my foot in the door more. Unfortunately Crete doesn't seem to be hiring at that location at the moment but I've heard decent things about them and would mind going otr until I can get on there.
The other option is to go to Prime or Scheinder and switch to flatbed or tanker since that's mostly what's in Houston. Do 6 months or so and try to get something better then. Wagoneers is hiring dedicated flatbed between Houston and Edmonton, and that sounds pretty dope.
Or I could stay at my comfy but low paying reefer job.
Wat do?

okay guys. I'm the guy from a few threads ago that applied at Lowes and was immediately offered a position but at a hilariously low pay. I've convinced my fiancée that I'm going to have to do a year or two of OTR before anyone is ever going to take me on for a decent local position that isn't LTL. what are the highest paying companies that will take new drivers? I've got an awesome reference from my instructor and racked up the lowest amount of any of his students, ever, on the final CDL test. I'd really like to do flatbed and don't want to be on a team. other than that I'm not gonna be picky, I just want to put away some money so that my future wife and I can live an okay life. any suggestions? thanks in advance.

Lone Tree, CO. Just south of Denver. There are a couple places looking for local drivers in North Denver but they're far enough away that I would spend 3 hours a day commuting in this overcrowded shitshow and at that point I'd rather just do OTR or at least regional, anyway.
>>
>>17034167
I think System is your best bet for OTR flatbed in that area. For local/regional you'll have to do some digging, but System should keep you out west enough for you to be able to talk up drivers from those kinds of companies at shippers in the area.

If you build that, you might as well build some tracks underneath it and have a much better and more efficient mode of transportation.
>>
>>17034337
The thing is it can retract the wire coat hanger and do local deliveries off the grid.
>>
>>17034337
Definitely much more efficient, but better? Better is subjective.

As just one example, the kind of monocrop factory farming which sustains modern cities requires millions and millions of acres of spread, for crops which are harvested only 1-3 times per year. To service every field with a branch line that only gets used a few times a year would certainly be possible, but would it be better? f4t

Actually the fuel efficiency isn't even that much better, if at all, because American trucks can be a lot more aerodynamic with their snouts, also the lower permissible weights are negated by the higher speeds. Europe is electronically limited to 56 mph. Americans go 60 or 62 or sometimes 65 when they're in a hurry or empty.
>>
>>17035209
You have literally no idea what you're talking about.

Pulling triples here in Aus longhaul with a v8 Scania is about 1km per litre whereas a Kenny T90x is about 600m per litre. Fucking huge difference. Yes you have the aerodynamics but the engines are hugely hugely superior. The only reason more companies don't use v8's is because they more expensive to rebuild. Also credit where it's due the Kenny's and and W-Stars and such seem to fair better in the bush.

Found your problem, they're actually brick shaped. What's the fuel economy look like for a T609?

Trucks in Europe average between 32 and 40 l/100km; that's 2.5 to 3 km/l or 5.9 to 7.4 mpg American, pretty much in line with the more aerodynamic American trucks as far as I know. Not counting the antiquated brick noses of course.

Since this is the truckin' thread, I think the worst thing about states having their own laws has to be the inconsistencies in traffic laws and regulations when there is so much traffic across state lines.

But honestly driving through the Western US might as well be like driving through Yurop since you are in a new juristiction every few hundred miles.

You have to say where and when you will be going and what roads you will be using. IDK what you're supposed to write if you only have a load in but not out. Instead of paying them quarterly thru IFTA you have to prepay before you b enter the state. I think if you go there regularly you can get some kind of registration to pay quarterly. If anyone here drives there they can correct me.
>>
>>17036930
I've never heard of this, and drove through Oregon twice weekly. Presumably dispatch took care of it. The only weird thing I've had to deal with in Oregon is the extra code for fuelling.

me again. I sent in an application last night and then called their recruiter this morning. I told her that I was after the Colorado regional route since there was nowhere to specify on the application, and the way she talked she practically made it sound like I already had the job and went through the whole orientation/training process with me. she also said I'd have to be okay with being out for up to two weeks at a time which was longer than I expected for regional, but I told her that I would need time off for my wedding in October and she was fine with it.

so she said starting pay once I'm on my own after up to 5 weeks of training would be 44 cents per mile. since this whole pay type is really different to what I'm used to, is there any rule of thumb or something to calculate exactly what kind of monthly or annual salary this might turn into, on average? I know they also said they offer tarping, loading/unloading pay etc. as well.

44cpm is good starter pay.

To get a rough idea of your average pay, ask them how many miles their drivers get per week, then subtract 500 from that figure. Multiply it by cpm and that's what a mediocre (not bad) week will look like. For the first year, just assume every week will be mediocre. It won't, but it's better to be conservative until you have a better feel for what you'll be earning.
>>
>>17037505
I think what I've picked up on forums and shit is around 2500-3000 miles per week? does that sound about right?

on a completely unrelated note - would I be stupid to try to make the jump to being an owner-operator sooner, rather than later? like within the next couple years. I worked at Peterbilt for a couple years and I'm fully capable of doing PMs and some light to moderate repairs, and also have a good contact I met there that does side work at home for like $60/hr if I need bigger jobs done.

I have incredibly bad OCD and I know I'm probably never going to get the truck I want working for a company but I think I'd also like the better sense of freedom that would come with working for myself.

Ice road hauling isn't nearly as dangerous or exciting as the show makes it out to be.

Profitable to be sure, but the few ads I have seen posted want at least 5+ years of real winter driving experience and usually a couple years of b-train experience or tri-tri / tri-quad tanker experience, so not easy to get into.

Pretty soon there will be a black hole where Atlanta once stood and, even though passing over the event horizon traps light and slows time itself, you will still be able to get through more quickly than you could right now.

I remember someone telling me once that truck financing was way different from car financing. he said some shit like the max loan term is 24 months, and you have to start out making bigger payments and they get smaller over time. it sounded stupid as fuck. if that a total load of bullshit?

Some places require you to slide the tandem because their parking lots are so tight to get into a spot without hitting another trailer with your trailer overhang you have to slide them all the way back. I've been in a few like that, I've had loading docks in New York that I had to slide the tandem halfway through backing in to avoid hitting the 359 to the right of me with my trailer overhang.

Depends on how they're set up internally.

With fluid there is a sloshing effect that happens when the tank is not full so the fluid has room to move from one end to the other when the truck is going up or down a hill, that changes the handling and weight distribution of the truck.

It also happens during cornering, wherein the fluid sloshes back and forth to the sides of the trailer, and if a driver carries too much speed into the corner, that weight shift can help to cause a roll over.

You really notice the weight on up hill or down hill grades; the fluid shifts backwards and all of a sudden you don't have as much traction on the drives, or it shifts forwards and it feels like you gained a bunch of weight.

Some tanks have baffles that lessen the sloshing effect, but it never gets rid of it completely.

Slightly off topic, but the worst part about flatbedding is how much more creative one has to get to safely hide the trophies one takes from lot lizards, runaways and drifters.
>>
>>17048556
>sloshing effect

I was once told a story about that. I'm not sure who it was actually about, but it's one of those things you get told by your family at some point. I think it was my dad relating a tale his sister's husband was told by a friend?
Anyway. This guy was a trucker, hauling tanker trailers about. One night, the police stopped him after following him for a while. He apparently got pulled over fairly often by bored coppers for bullshit reasons, so this time he decided to take his revenge. They stopped in front of him, so he came to a halt, fairly sharply, right behind them. Load sloshed forwards as he stopped, then back, and then forwards again, smashing him into the back of their car. "Sorry guv, it was the load" Was the excuse. Apparently more than once.

What's the day to day like?
Are the runs longer or shorter?
How long does loading/unloading take?
>>
>>17049061
Well, sudden stopping will cause it to put more load on the tractor brakes since the weight shifts forward suddenly. I have never in all my days see a bolice officer try to stop someone by pulling in front of them, that being said.

>>17049074
My limited tanker experience is all oilfield based, so the specifics would be a lot different than otr tanker work.

Loading and offloading a 30m3 (7900 gallon) load of fluid will probably take around 45 minutes to an hour and ten, depending on how much hose has to be hooked up, and how fast the pump moving the fluid can go.
>>

A lot of bulk hauling pays that way.

When I hauled frac sand I was getting something like 26% of the tractor earnings, which worked out to $34/hr straight time.

Do you know what the loads pay? Did they tell you what that percentile averages out to?

$25/hr loading/unloading/detention/breakdown pay, even though you average waay more when "cuck per mile"ing. on top of 90% drop&hook and 100% no-touch, I think it's cute when busriders try to insult company drivers while I'm making almost 3x the national average with no education and sitting on my ass all day every day.

You really should be pulling the corners under the front so they don't catch extreme amounts of air.
>>
>>17050034
Yeah I actually have two tarps strapped down holding the front down that you can't see.

I've got two 6' eye-to-the-sky coils. They are too big for my steel tarp, and my lumber tarp just barely works. I dunno this looks awful but I've been at this shipper too long.

I drove for a bit then fixed the parts that were ballooning with some rope.

I don't have something nice and symmetrical like lumber.

Anyway, I'm overweight on my trailer axle and have to go back. The mistake I made was not using the lumber tarp "end flap" as an aerodynamic ramp. I've got that flap on the backside instead. So round #2 should be better.

No. Put the flap on the back of the coil under the chains against the coil, and hook the sides together over the chains. Then take the straight end of the tarp, and pull it as far forward as you can and hook it to the trailer tight. Tuck the sides under flat, then use a chain or strap to fix a 4x4 on the front of the tarp a foot or two back from the leading edge to keep air and water from getting under it. Secure the d-rings front to back on both sides, and throw a few ropes over the slope to reduce tarp movement.
>>
Okay I'll try that.

Here's the best part. 24k lbs coils and chains are NOT allowed per company policy.

Also, no bungees at the front or end of load. Only these pieces of yellow rope they give you.

I hate this shipper. Rules are dumb. Forklift guy is dumb. Secretary is stupid. I worked all day today for no money.
