Spent Saturday tearing the XR650L down and getting it ready to go again. Took it out Sunday for a good hooning through some of the rainwater runoff canals around town.

Embarrassing, but it had been sitting for nearly a year. Ended up tearing the carb apart for a deep cleaning. New battery, new rear brake pads, and a new front tube. Still need to take it into a shop to get the stuck swingarm bolt driven out and replaced, probably will need new bearings too.

Man, sometimes I feel like I am the only sane sport bike rider around here. Some dude recognized my GSX-R (he rode himself) and we started talking about bikes and it quickly became apparent that this guy was on some next level shit judging by the stories he was telling me. I guess some mechanic robbed him. Some other dude put the wrong chain on his bike. The chain snapped when he was doing 130 on the highway and shot a hole straight through his crank case. He somehow got 8 tickets in one day. Etc...

Are you guys normal?

If yes, then buy it. That's how most people look at these things.

Not everyone is on two wheels to go fast.

So, I'm sort of restoring my bike (not that it's broken, just a shitbike that I want prettier and more mechanically sound).

I've got most of the cosmetic things covered: removed rust from bolts, new fairings, cleaned/degreased/regreased frame and cables and whatnot. Also did some electrical stuff, just heatshrinking wires and cleaning terminals, etc.

Onto the mechanical stuff, what should I be doing? Thing is, it rides so damn well, and somehow it managed to fix it's own shaky idle (dirty carbs) just by being ridden and idled a few times with some high quality fuel.

Should I change bearings and other bits for the sake of it? How do I know if they're failing? The only job I'm not hesitant to do for the sake of it is a valve check.

A few simple carb and intake mods bring those numbers up appreciably. A little work to the headers and a new exhaust help some more. When the top end wears out, you bore it out to 675-720cc and install a hotcam and high compression piston. 10 minutes with a 10/12mm wrench and you can easily drop 10-20 lbs.

Rock solid reliability, cheap parts everywhere, retard friendly maintenance. Established aftermarket.

Remind me how this isn't the best dual sport ever made?

He is insanely fucking lucky to have survived. I seriously don't get how chucklefucks like him can crash horribly twice within 6 months and walk away, and then people who normally ride safely get killed at like 28mph because a soccer mom backing out of her driveway plowed them over and snapped their neck or something
>>
>>16993357
Valve check is easy. Adjusting them gets complicated.

If you have autism like me, you could do a full chassis service and replace the steering stem bearing, wheel bearings, lube the swingarm linkage, replace rear shock, service the forks, etc
>>
>>16993878
Because it's not a plated XR650R

Also, memes aside, the DR650 is a much better 50/50 "true" dual sport bike. XR fucking dominates in the dirt but leaves a lot to be desired on the pavement, especially if you try to do adventure riding. DR is okay at both dirt and pavement, whereas the XR is great in the dirt and not very good on the pavement

Much more power but heavier. I chose the gsxs over the fz09 because of power and the fz10 because of price, the gsxs was almost $4000 less at the time compared to the fz10. And Honda a shit for standards. It's just an all around normal bike without to many bells and whistles
>>
>>16993878
probably because its not a 690 enduro R
although that might be overpowered
>>
>>16993895

The XR650R was a nice bike and all, but the lack of an electric start as well as being street legal without modification and, you know, the fact that they discontinued it are kind of marks against it. I might have bought one eventually if they hadn't.

DR's are fine, but I'm not really sure where you come by the opinion that the XR isn't any good on pavement. I took mine through CO-NM-AZ-CA-NV-UT and it did a damn good job. A lot of highway or street riding might call for a change in sprockets. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I've been riding mine on dirt and asphalt for 6 years and don't have any complaints.
>>
Tell me the truth about sport bikes. Do they really have weak low end power?
>>
>>16993916

690 Enduro R is a nice bike, and massive fun, but it just doesn't have the longevity or reliability of the XR. Everyone I've ever talked to that has owned one (usually past tense) says it's some of the most fun they've ever had on a motorcycle. When it was running right.

In fact, that's been my experience with all KTM enduros and dirtbikes. Great when they're working, finicky as fuck too often. I don't know anything about their street bikes.
>>
>>16993638
I found a '06 Gt650 for $1500 Canada FunBuxâ„¢ with just over 10k km on it. Hard to pass that up even if it's only 90% as good as the SV.

Stator and regulator have needed replacement, known issues, but otherwise no problems. Good first bike since I don't care if I bin it. Can't really compare it to other bikes, though.

Hard to find the brand around here, so not much aftermarket. But fuck it, it's a shit pile, I just nigger-weld up whatever I need.

>>
>>16993959

>>
>>16993930
It's all relative desu. Your average redditor will take the notion of "youll never get bored with a 150mph bike" to the grave with them even tho they are just retarded liberals incapable of higher thinking. Your average fuel injected 600 i4 will feel very very fast compared to a 250/300, even in the lower rpms. The throttle response is much more refined and delicate.

Compared to a liter bike, the 600s seem like a joke. You basically have the 600 power band at every part of the rev range on a liter bike. And then in the liter bike power band, you simply flip over. So it's all relative.
>>

not really they're just overgeared stock. If you go -1/+2 on a 600 you'll have no troubles with roll on power or it feeling weak down low.

Obviously it's slower everywhere than a litrebike but the idea that they're all top and no bottom is a little silly they just rev out a lot, with the exception of the yamaha R6 they're all generally linear bottom to top.

If you want a 600 but want more torque and midrange buy the gsx-r750, it's literally a 600 frame with a bigger engine jammed in and only weighs 2kg more than the 600.

Sound and emissions probably.

Kinda comical when you hit around 9000rpm and the bike really starts moving with a purpose all of a sudden.

After the reflash it's like a whole new bike, Actually has a strong midrange and pulls clean to redline without the 8-9000rpm surge.

a fbw throttle map, so the percent you're seeing is how much it actually opens the throttle, you can see it only actually opens the throttle bodies 100% in a tiny rev range of the engine at maximum throttle.

Have you ever ridden a liter? The power is manageable, unless you dump the clutch from redline or completely ham fist the throttle in 1st or 2nd you won't loop it.

Modern ones with all the rider aids simply won't let you loop it at all.

That's the stock throttle map on the 2008+ R6's. It's a similar story on the 2006-2007 bikes too.

The Y on that graph is engine RPM
The X is throttle percentage at the wrist
Each value cell in the graph is the actual amount of throttle the bike is letting you have in each situation.

Notice the bike only lets you hit 100% throttle at 11,000-13,750rpm.

Reflashing the ecu lets you have pic related which majorly changes the engine characteristics of the bike. Then it's a willy machine in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Seems like that throttle map is too agressivly progressive. At 50% throttle you're getting 70% power.

You'd think you wanted more fine control at lower throttle opening like in a turn and more course control when you're opening it up?

Maybe that's a throttle map for an agressive rider that's going to be getting into it hard on the exit and needs to be able to control wheel slip under more power?

Can anyone suggest any models a beginner should look at?

>>
>>16995014
Not american so I can't recommend a school.
But if you're going on road you should at minimum start with a 250. If you're going to be riding it a lot on road (especially highway) you will probably want something bigger but a 250 is fine for leisure riding and is imo better to start a little smaller on the dirt so you get used to finding the power on the bike. Any major brands are preferable for parts availability (you'll probably need to replace something on a used bike), I wouldn't recommend going earlier than mid 90s and don't let mileage fool you, some trail bikes get a hard life from a lot of wheelies/no maintenance/general thrashing on and off road so just get a look at it started from cold, does it blow smoke, oil leaks etc

He lives out in the boonies and doesn't really care about comfort, I offered him my fz6 last year but he knows it's not what he wants.
>>
>>16995455
I only did that when I hit a dog with my car.
Some huge alaskan malamute breed.
Cracked my windshield.
Felt terrible for like a week.

Help me decide...

R850R or F800ST?

Which one is gonna be more reliable?
>>
>>16995468
>>16995456
V-strom 650 would be a great idea.
>>
>>16995501
Are you asking which one is the ugliest bike ever made? That's a really hard question anon.

Both will be about equal in reliability probably.
>>
>>16995512
i've just heard so many bad things about the 2006 F800ST in terms of reliability.

I like the look of the boxer engine. I'm not a sports bike fag.

I'll let him know but I doubt he'd ever get behind the idea of using a bike like that for the telkwa pass (pic related)

Hey guys, got sent here from /n/, hoping you can help.
I just bought this helmet, wondering if I should have gotten something different.
I'm looking for a mid-range street sport helmet, and I wear glasses.
$200-$350
Still trying to decide between full-face or modular; what's the real story on those?
Looking for one with visible colors.
Gimme all your tips.
>>
>>16995594
Buy helmet that fits.

Modular are worse than full face at everything except being modular.
>>
>>16995594
Bilt is garbage, Shoei and Arai helmets are bretty gud. It should be on just this side of uncomfortably tight when you first buy it.

Bruh you said 95% highway 5% dirt roads.
>>
>>16995594
An expensive modular will be just as safe as anything, but don't buy a cheap modular.
Modular is a pretty overrated feature unless you're looking at a Schuberth.
>>
>>16995600
Modulars can be significantly quieter because the neck opening can be smaller than your head.
>>
>>16994853
Nice bike
>>
>>16995651
I meant that's what the group does every Sunday, he wants to do a lot more off road

Maybe if you're the Crimson fucking Chin. That's not how it works. It's a 3/4 helmet with a hinged visor and chin guard, and full face and 3/4 helmets have the same contact points.
>>
>>16995691
>Neotec
comfy/10

>>16995690
A V-Strom 650 would do that just fine, but a DR650 with the rally fairing thing that ProCycle sells might end up working better if he really wants to do more off road stuff and can deal with some highway buffeting.

>>
>>16995690
Then yes he should absolutely get a DR650, maybe an XR650, and not a KLR.

>>16995691
I said can be, not all are you cuck. Read literally anything about the design of the Schuberth C3, then kill yourself on stream.
>>
>hate my helmet
>just got it last year
>don't want to waste money on a new one
Never getting icon again. My gloves ripped within 6 months and the helmet is trash.

So it would be worth the $80 restocking fee is what your saying?
I just bought it today; do you think I can persuade them to wave it?
>>
>>16995736
Pretty much how I felt when I had all Icon. My jacket was great and the gloves were the comfiest I've ever owned though.
It's good to keep an extra helmet around for passengers, no reason not to have two :^)
>>
>>16995690
xr650 is the most offroad capable/ best suspension of the simple jap DS bikes but its tall, the DR is shorter and has simpler, less useable suspension in hard offroad, but its more planted and slightly more powerful
>>
>>16995735
>>16995716
I'll try to keep an eye out for the 3 weeks out of the year one of those go for sale
>>
>>16995743
If it fits fine and is comfortable don't bother imo

>>16995749
Location?
>>
>>16995744
I already have a passenger helmet. My bike doesn't even have a rear seat anyways though.
>>
>>16995755
See if someone on Craigslist will buy it for $50?

Those are both pretty far from Vancouver. He used to be a motorcycle mechanic so he wants a bit of a cheap project to work on.

A DR650 is like 6300+tax brand new according to the suzuki website.

He lives up north but there's hardly anything but Harleys up there. I live here and am looking for him.

>>16995798
What you looking for? Should have got one like 3 months ago for good deals.
