Buying cheap multimeter today, going to see about trying to get the MJ working again. All power to the vehicle is still gone as per my last post so I'm not too completely convinced that the problem is going to be all that awful to locate. Has to be close to the positive battery cable somewhere. Hopefully I can get the bastard working again soon, I'd hate to give up on it but I've got my regrets about this project for sure.

does your year caprice still have that weird ass electronic distributor hooked up to a knock sensor? I went through hell trying to figure out why my brother's 305 wouldn't start after I had pulled the engine to fix the rear main seal.

if it does you can bypass the entire ignition control module and make it a 1 wire HEI again by jumping two of the wires on the 4 pin connector. I think it was 2 and 4, but I'm not sure.

Get an old shit piece of carpet to work on so you're not rolling around in the dirt.
Bulk trash day in the city is a great way to find rugs and whatnot. Who cares if it's stained, it's gonna sit outside in the sun and rain.

>>16967159
It's pretty shitty. Those tiny caster wheels just dig in when there's any kind of load on the cherrypicker. You're better off rolling the car out from underneath the cherrypicker instead of the other way around.

A carpet makes it a bit better (the cherrypicker still sinks, but it doesn't DIG) but a cement slab is obviously the best way to go.

give it another 20 years when all these barges are older and some people will be saying "nice car" to you at gas stations and stuff, versus today people barely batting an eye.

I wonder if cars from the early 2000s will ever be classics. Ever think in 40 years people will look at an 01 malibu and think "man, that's a nice car. why dont they make them like this anymore?"

Load levelers are meant to assist old, worn out springs, but can also be used to stiffen up a suspension system when used with new springs for better handling and less body roll.

I have KYB gas a just shocks up front with new springs, load levelers and cargo coils in the rear, they're all pretty alright.
>>
>>16968807
but anon, i keep my grand marquis in nice shape (no rust/rot, do wash & wax it) and at gas stations I have gotten some older folks compliment me on it. I agree right now it's not on par with the classics of the 50s/60s, but it's a style no longer in production and are rarely seen on roads. That has to count for something, yeah?

>>16968807

Probably a stupid question, but any ideas why my Bronco has been dry starting after sitting for 8 hours? It's usually less than or about a second before it gets oil pressure and the horrendous noise of my bearings killing themselves stops. This has only started happening since I replaced the valve cover gaskets and intake manifold gaskets and cleaned the insides of both up, which I don't think should have any effect. It's a 5.0 with ~130K miles. Fresh oil and filter. It should probably be noted that I'm using 20W50 because I had low oil pressure previously, but it had the same thing (after the gaskets) on the 500 miles old 10W30 I was running until I changed to 20W50 yesterday.

Why don't you just find a stock factory carb and rebuild it? Or is your goal a performance build for the 225?

BBD's meant for a slant six are hard to find. Most are for a 318 or a 4.0 jeep (there's a difference) and most of those are remanufactured like what i have already. I'm going to be stuck with the 225 for a while so i figured i might as well get some extra horses out of it if i could.

Buddy's Comet is officially running and driving with the new 302. He temporarily screwed in his new floors/bench yesterday and threw on a couple of cheap mufflers just to see if he could get it around the block a couple of times without stalling. Mission accomplished. Clutch pedal assembly needs a bit of work as it isn't fully disengaging but that's no big deal. If all goes according to plan he'll be driving it in its current questionably screwed together state 15 kilometers up a windy mountain rd to our other buddy's place to weld the floors in place, and then it's basically home free from there.

I prefer the Mark V to the Town Coupe. Though, I've been busy with my new Rolls Royce.

Gotcha. That's interesting btw; I too think that people back then would not have batted an eye to these cars but today they are a relic of times past.

I got to see it in person at an auto show recently. The "Chinese construction quality" meme didn't seem to apply. It is actually pretty top-notch. It looks great, the features are sweet, and most everything on it feels quality. Some nice touches arethe real metal throughout the car and soft-close doors but I liked a lot about it.

Fug, wrong car. Here's the Continental. Note the cool-ass door handles below the windows.

>>
>>16972460
If only indeed, I can settle for a 400-hp V6 though.
>>
>>16972460
That's what it would have needed; it's not a bad car, but, the "Continental" name means a lot more to some of us.

For example, I'd put my old Mark V up against a Rolls Royce back in the day; in '64, the Continental was vastly superior to the Cadillac, Imperial, and Rolls Royce.
>>
>>16972488
I love the original Continental too and agree. It's arguably the best American luxury car made in the last 30 or 40 years though.
>>
>>16972495
A 1966 Continental is on my list of dream cars; one of two from the '60s that I don't have, and it is arguably the best.

I aim to park one in my garage next to a '66 Imperial and a '68 Cadillac.

Welp found out two things about Duster today.
1: the radiator is completely boned.
Something happened in its life that blew the seams on the radiator.
It was bone dry by the time i realized it was leaking so much.

2: the transmission is dry as well, which is why it kept stalling out when i tried to move it.

Also my waterpump is whining like one of those straight cut gear transmissions.

take the wheel to the shop its a simple tune up and they will replace the tire and keep the rim. they can install the new wheel inside the car shop too.

so my dad should just lift the truck on stands and just take all the rims to a tire shop to get the tires ordered and replaced?

Clean your damn terminals.

I told you to do that shit like 2 or 3 threads ago.

Clean the battery posts and clamps.
Clean the terminals on the battery cables where they hook to the solenoid.
Clean the main power wires where they come off the solenoid.

Take a wire brush to them, or sandpaper, or whatever.
Then put some silicone grease (or bearing grease, whatever you have handy) and slap it together.

Actually, post a pic of your solenoid. I know you have one kicking around.

did you change the solenoid that had that huge ass crack in it?

Run the lead all the way from the battery to the starter, bypassing the solenoid altogether. If the engine turns over then it's most likely not the starter.

Clean everything. Buy a battery terminal cleaner. They're like $2 and they last forever. keep it in your glovebox or something.

Make sure the solenoid is wired up correctly. It's possible to wire them backwards and still work, just not for long. yours might be wired up completely fucky. The side the battery is connected to is the side the 12v gets applied to on the smaller post. The side the starter connects to is the side the keyed 12v ignition is wired to.

and also judging by your grounds in >>16985403 you need to strip that paint off of the fender well and make sure that solenoid is properly grounded. They are grounded by their mounting bolts. Bad ground = weak solenoid, which equals unhappy starter and unhappy electrical system altogether. My galaxie did the same thing until I cleaned the grounds reeaally good.

You may have just gotten one wire in the wrong place.
if the relay clicks just once that means that the ignition circuit isn't being completed.

Oh good, your chassis power wires come off the solenoid, not the battery clamp.

But yeah, that looks dirty as fuck. Clean that shit up.

There's a way to find out exactly where the issue is, but that requires a voltmeter. (See diagram)
Hook it up like this, then actuate the starter. Anything more than 2V drop is unacceptable.

Repeat the test between the solenoid and starter, and the battery and solenoid. Do the negative post and the starter case, as well.

And make sure your negative cable is on the block, not the fender, not the frame. The block.
>>
>>16985484
An additional note: the voltmeter will read [battery voltage] when the starter isn't running. That's normal, that's what it should be.
You need to take the reading with the solenoid engaged, when the starter post and battery post are supposed to be at the same potential.

You're on your own with that one bro. In America we can just buy them and run them. I'm sure most Euro countries have a provision for classic car emissions, you'd have to worry about insurance though.

So update on the Ford. I have new leads on the battery, the wiring is correct, but still nothing. I've tried jumping the starter with a lead directly from the positive terminal to the starter and still nothing.

Do you think at this point it could be the starter?

One was original equipment on your car so it basically just bolts on to the water pump like the fan it has now. The thermal clutch for your application (don't get Heavy Duty btw, just regular is fine) should be available at any parts store. The blade part will probably have to be scrounged from likely donors but may as well ask at the parts store because maybe a repro is available.

I'll try jumping it later, but unless there's a draw its a brand new battery

m8, first of all you don't just start throwing parts at it. That's dumb shit.

If you have a new battery then we can eliminate low voltage. Here's what you should have done first, and what you should do now. Get that battery and take jumper cables, hook up a ground to the starter from the battery and a positive connection as well.

If it cranks, wham bam you got another problem. If not replace the starter m8. fuk u doin

Could be a bad ground.

I've checked all the grounds, and the battery was a few warranty replacement :^) also the solenoids go out on Ford trucks and they're only like 12 dollars a pop.

You know as much as I love this truck, it's the least reliable thing I've ever owned. Never getting rid of it though.

As for the starter, what you just described ive already done, which is why at this point I'm assuming it's the starter.

How much have you put into that motor?

Not sure to be honest, it's an AMC 360. These motors stock made 195 hp 295 ft lbs net with a 4bbl. 8.5:1 comp. Cam was around .450 lift dont know duration.

Now it's got low 9ish:1 comp, comp 280h cam .490 lift 230 duration @ .050. Edelbrock air gap rpm intake, as well as the holley. I'm hoping for mid 300 hp and low 400 ft lbs. Also used to have a borg warner 3 speed behind it, putting a 727 torqueflite with a shift kit.

Weakest point now is going to be the rear end, gears are only 3.11's but it's got a 2500 stall converter so hopefully it's not a complete dog.

If I had to do it again, I'd just grab a block from the junkyard and throw shit together. It's not even the original block so idk why the fuck I rebuilt it.

Got the window bracket glued back on today, finally i'll have a working passenger side window.

On a semi-related note, the car's engine bay and air filter/air cleaner reek of gasoline, do i have it running to rich or something? Is the carb getting to hot and causing some of the gasoline to evaporate?

Not unusual for a carb'd motor to smell like gas. The fuel bowls are being vented right into the engine bay. If it smells strongly, could be a leak.

Ignition coil. Underhood temps were too hot and the coil was ancient. I think thermal expansion caused the copper to get hot, which cracked the ceramic.

>>
>>16986522
Draw through is kinda shitty and I'll tell you why:

When the throttle is opened on a carburetted or throttle body injected engine, the sudden change in pressure makes the atomized fuel basically fall out of the air stream. That's why there's an accellerator pump on a carb, and a bit of code to enrich the mix on a TBI.
They both dump a bunch of fuel into the intake charge so the mixture is less lean by the time it reaches the cylinders.
A draw through turbo adds more runner length and therefore more bad mix that needs to be cleared out or enriched. It shouldn't be an issue if the distance between the carb and manifold is kept as short as possible, but if you start adding piping or whatever, it'll turn shitty, fast.

By all means, though, go for it. It's not something you hear about every day.

It has nothing to do with the 300. I've just had problems with this engine, tied with the fact that it's slow as shit, also tied with the fact that it's got blowby out the ass and the flex plate is fucked.

Also no key has been in the ignition.

This engine is a shit, the restoration work was whack as hell as well. The people who restored it did a bunch of nig things like use a positive lead cable for the ground and a negative to the solenoid, just painted over the original paint instead of using it down to the body.

Friend you seem very autistic, and lack the perception to understand a string of posts or piece together a story.
