I straightened out the cable and operation from within the car seems to work now.

Thanks guys. I know it's a simple thing but fixing it made me feel good about myself.

How hard is it to make smogmuscle good?

>400cui
>180hp
>17 second 1/4 mile
>>
>>16936198
It really isn't.

Aluminum heads, a nice mild cam, bump compression to 9.5:1. It'll probably double output.
>>
>>16936198
check forums specific to that car. there should be a guide to removing the smog pumps and the other controls strangling it.

>>16936198
Depends on your skill set and budget. One of the more popular Pontiac smog-era heads is the big valve large chamber 6X casting which might very well have come on those particular Lemans, I don't remember off the top of my head. But shave the heads, get a head gasket with a smaller crush thickness, run a pretty nasty cam (big engines tend to "tame" more radical camshafts) and valve springs that can take it- The stock Pontiac dual plane intake is pretty good, just port match the gaskets, block the heat risers in the heads. If you're so inclined you can spring for like a Holley carb (700cfm thereabouts). Or the more budget minded approach would be jamming on the Quadrajet (rebuild with a typical kit, hog out the fuel bowl crossover, play with jets/metering rods). Snag a used set of long tube headers, bump the timing forward a little bit and fuel it with 93.
>>
These are the best threads on /o/.

I've been looking at remanufacturing companies like dynacorn, they look nice in theory, but my god the prices start to climb quickly if you wanted to build a whole car using them. A 9k chassis quickly jumps to a 40k rolling chassis with all exterior trim pieces but no interior or drivetrain
>>
>>16937117

Expensive in and of itself, requires a high pressure electric fuel pump which entails modifying the existing basket or fabricating something to accept the electric pump in the tank which is slightly dicey work for the uninitiated (or blow the budget entirely and go with an aeromotive tank with a pump already in it)- And all ultimately for a marginal improvement (maybe) over a well-tuned carburetor.
>>
>>16937494
Or I suppose you could go external pump but those are also rather pricey, still require modifying the tank, and if not mounted and plumbed properly the pump will die.
>>
>>16937494
it may be a bit pricey but I found it relatively easy to install.
Maybe for a complete novice this would be difficulty but for the average car guy it is not that hard.
>>
>>16937581
I've found it safer to assume everyone including people who say they're experienced are novices- But it was less any actual difficulty I was getting at when I said "dicey" but that grinding/brazing what have you on a tank that once had gasoline in it is an uncertain affair.

I bought this for 7k at an auction. Original owner from Canada and had never restored it. Paint was like new and the interior was almost perfect. They put in a supertuner II in the 80's sadly but thats a gem in itself. The crome is pretty shot but I have felt no need to ever replace it, I like this car how it is, unrestored.
Its a 350 rocket (non ramrod) bore is 4.057 and stroke is 3.385 compression ratio is 10.88:1. It was rated at 310 bhp factory but over the years I bet that has sharply dropped. My cam sounds old and tired and the car is going nowhere fast.

This was the durdiest car I have ever cleaned. It had dog poop, rat poop, coon poop, human poop (no shit) and unidentifiable poop. as well as a mountain of mice corpses and garbage that was thrown in the car. I went through two cans of lacquer thinner to sanitize this thing and its still grotty.

Flash pic in the dark, keep it covered up because of old window seals and water getting under the vinyl roof. I took the 400 hood and bumper off so they would not get damaged.
Factory disc brakes, deluxe interior, YT code 400 RA3, Rally wheels, cruise control.
Had it for 20 years, gone over 100k miles in it.
I keep a heavy duty trash bag over the engine to prevent rain from getting into the engine, the hood badges leak water.

I'll post pics anyway. I rebuilt a SBC350, and an M4MC Rochester quadrajet. I got a rebuild kit from carbkitsource. It included a lot of new stuff. I replaced the Jets, among other things. Didn't replace the float. Didn't replace the metering rods. The car will start, and sputter and snort but will run, albeit a little stumbly. Soon after, maybe 15 seconds of running, the carb will start dripping fuel out the sides down into the intake valleys.

It's definitely not the plugs, those look good. I adjusted the float once, bending it so while the bowl fills, it will close the valve or whatever sooner. That helped slightly, but it still leaked after a time. Did it again, with the float nearly straight, and it helped a tiny bit more, but still leaks.

Do you think the float is just bad and not floating anymore? Can I just take off the airhorn and fill the bowl with fuel to see if it's job is being performed? I'm not sure what to do. Pics related, where the leaks SEEM to be coming from

If you didn't replace the accelerator pump, that's generally the first thing I jump to when dealing with a stumble. If you just replaced like gaskets, needle and seat but didn't blow out the main circuit, that's another possible explanation for the stumble. As for the leaking, a gasket may have gotten pimped when you put it back together, there's also a known issue with the well-plugs on Qjets where they were mounted for casting in the factory, they'll develop a leak and just piss fuel. Simply epoxying these is a good way to go for fixing that, and that's what I'd put my money on for leakage problem.

4k is the asking price for my '69 Firebird, most common year, lots of them around. hard to find one that has been left stock though.

Problem is it needs a lot of rust repair. Good mechanical condition, would drive it anywhere so long as it doesn't rain!
>>
>>16938929
Depending on where you live, I wouldn't make a classic a daily. If you're south and won't face a snowy winter, then you're fine.

And as far as what to expect, it really depends on your area. Find a car that interests you. Look around. Learn about it BEFORE you buy it. With cars these old it will be easy to figure it out.

I believe I changed the seats. Maybe I need new needles. Is there anything to the seats besides tightening them? Does orientation matter?
>>16938924
I did replace the accelerator pump, and it does work. I can manually move it and see fuel come up when I have the airhorn off.

I guess I could say the throttle doesn't really do much with the engine. It doesn't really seem to cause it to Rev higher or anything, just stays alive
>>
>>16938969
>I believe I changed the seats. Maybe I >need new needles. Is there anything to >the seats besides tightening them? >Does orientation matter?

Needle and seat are matched, you change them together. Since you changed the seat I can safely guess you have a Rochester (and not a Carter).
Orientation? Just tight. And there is a little ring gasket that goes under it.
It's flooding, and drowns the engine, we all have that happen with old carburetors, welcome to the club.
If you park it for a while, I had one car that the carb will flood when it first fills with fuel and then if you let it sit for a half-hour then it will not flood.
Get a kit from NAPA, they will want the number (something like 7029268 or 7040262), will usually be found stamped into the fuel bowl assembly toward the back of the carb by the secondary on the left side.
>>
>>16939017

If they fit in the seat and seal, and the seat threads into the fuel bowl and also fits up to the float, then you're good.

>>
>>16939168
I guess I'm just confused how they'll connect to the power valve thing. I'll have to take a look.
>>
>>16939235
The float mounts to the air horn section with that thick bent over piece of wire, the needle hangs from the little tab on the float by that little wire clip and the seat threads into the fuel bowl section. You can't run the car with the top off of it. The only carbs I know of that you can run with the air horn off are Ford Motorcraft 2100 and 4100.
Power valve is the vacuum operated plunger thingie that changes the primary mixture when the intake vacuum falls below a certain amount. Looking at a parts carb here that's what operates the primary metering rods.
Needle valve and float is not connected to anything else, it just regulates the level of fuel in the fuel bowl.
It is possible that your float is filling with fuel though very unlikely. You would notice liquid in it, should probably check just to be sure when you open the carb.

>>
>>16936198
You need the 4-barrel intake, large valve heads, carb and cam for a 1967-70 400 engine. Good heads are expensive now. Compression in a Pontiac is determined by the heads. Milling your heads will not gain you much before you will have to deal with the bolt holes in the intake not lining up.
Get rid of the EGR intake and get a carb or change yours over to the leaner mix for a non EGR setup.

Pontiac heads were reconfigured for 1967, don't try to use earlier heads. They fit but the valve chamfers in the block are in the wrong place and also problems like missing bolt holes for the exhaust manifolds and different size ports for the exhaust crossover that goes under the carb.

Pre 1967 Pontiac 4 barrels were for Carter Thermo-quad and those intakes do not fit Q-jets.
>>
>>16937117
...and then bend or break something in the bottom end?
>>
>>16939462
Maybe the pushrods. They don't like high-lift cams and increased rate valve springs.
After lengthy service you might remove pistons that are cracked through in several places, held bailed together by the rings, common in the high compression Pontiac builds.
>>
UNLIMITED PONTIAC WORKS
>>
>>16939462
Nah, not throwing nitrous or something at it. Tune the timing on it, always keep 93 octane in it. If you stay out of knock, you'll be hard pressed to break something bottom end even in an old engine.
>>16939500
Pontiacs run a 1.6 ratio rocker arm stock so they're easier on the pushrods, you can also run a cam with "less" lobe and still get a lot of lift. Would be a slight roll of the dice, but hardened pushrods wouldn't be a waste of money.

Carb issues guy here.

I took the float off and adjusted it. I took the needle and pressed it into the seat to see if it could seal properly, and it does, albeit after a couple bumps of the starter it kind of forces out some gas, but I expect that as the fuel pump is pushing the gas through.

I should mention that I built up this engine, so I'd say that there is less vacuum being generated. So the primary needles/power valve aren't being held down enough by the vacuum. I've found I can get lighter springs to compensate for that.

Also, what gasket should be on the bottom of the carb? I have both a thin one and a very thick one. Do I also need the thick one, I'm just using the thin one on the bottom.

So the gas still floods out. Both sides. I got another picture. Right at the bottom of the choke linkage is where it leaks. On the other side it leaks from the throttle linkage. My only guess is either through the choke part that goes into the carb or between where the airhorn meets the midsection of the carb. My gut says the latter, as the gas comes out of the seat pretty strongly, flowing out of the fuel bowl.

So I guess try another seat/needle?
I apologize for the poor formatting, phoneposting

Probably 80% done restoring it. Finished painting engine bay today and hope to drop in motor sometimes in the next 4 months
>>
>>16944725
is the float metal or plastic? Have you tested to see if it actually floats?

Are you using a mechanical fuel pump or electric? You might need a pressure regulator if it's electric and that'd explain your flooding.

If the surfaces on the bottom of carb and top of intake are both clean and smooth either gasket will be fine.
>>
>>16944769
It's the nitrophyl, like the very dense foam kind. And the pump is mechanical. But I did put in a new cam, so maybe it's creating more pressure. Is that possible?
>>
>>16944937
New cam wouldn't change fuel pressure
>>
>>16944985
Then I'm just lost on what is causing this flooding. How would gas get through there? This was a carb that was working perfectly when I took it off, then after taking it apart and getting a rebuild kit it does this.

I watched several videos many times and made sure I have everything correct. I'm just trying to fix this myself before I send it in to some repair service. I appreciate the help, thank you

Holy shit, this might be the nicest thread on all of /o/. For that reason and some other reverent ones, I feel comfortable enough to ask a few questions.

I want to start learning more about vehicles, I can do the bare basics like an oil change, filters change, tires change, and a few other things like changing brake pads, but not much else. I heard older/classic cars are mechanically simpler than today's cars, so I figured they would be a logical candidate to tinker on.

Next up, how feasible would it be to own and DD a classic in the NE region? Specifically SW PA. Rust is a real bitch here, and I imagine I would need 2 engines for legal purposes (350 SBC w/carb would fail sniffers hard-core right?). Also garage garaging the vehicle might be a bit tough, but possible if need be. As far as budget, I'm thinking 4K to 6K depending on things over the summer.

Thanks in advance if anyone replies.
>>
>>16945215
DD a classic is as easy as DDing anything else! They are reliable enough, cheap enough, sturdy enough. Now, don't get a nice car and expect to drive it in the winter. Just my opinion, but it depends on what you want out of the car. A long life? Something to learn on? Ask yourself what purpose it will fill with how you enjoy cars. It seems silly, but sorting this stuff out now will help on much later.

As for smog purposes, check your local/state laws. I live somewhere without any smog checks outside of federally mandated ones(cats, etc). A lot of classic cars are exempt either based on age, or never coming with the smog tech from the factory. Don't just assume it's all going to be pass or no pass. Exemption is a real thing.

4-6k is perfect to find something that is in decent shape and should run fine.

Also, what kinds of cars do you like? 2 door? 4 door? RWD? FWD? AWD? Do you want a lot of room inside, or don't mind being cramped?
>>

Thanks for the reply, I'm stupid and forgot that classics are usually emissions exempt anyways. I'm mainly looking for something to learn on, as well as build an engine for. I have the 350 SBC on my mind, so I did a small amount of research and found you can build them yourself for a modest budget (or a near nonexistent one if junkyards are generous). Basically I was planning on lots of Summit trips to drool on parts for it, because I'm a bit weary of junkyards.

As for the actual car itself, I'm not particularly picky, but something that seats 4 (passengers in back can be crammed, I myself prefer a bit of room) would be ideal. For reference as to my "taste", I've always been partial to '70's Chargers and Challengers. Think Dom' s Dad's Charger in the original Fast and Furious.

I would prefer FWD as well, but I believe a lot of the cars made back in the day were mostly RWD right? If so, that's fine.
Thanks for being so helpful by the way, this seriously is the nicest thread on /o/

The cooler the car, the more expensive the car my man, just keep that in mind.
My recommendation is just to check your local Craigslist and use the filters to filter out anything pre 1975

These two only mix with extensive modification. As for FWD classics...
Late 60's Olds Toronado, Cadi Eldorado, late 70's Omni.

if you have someone who wants a cheap, easy to work on car to learn this stuff, the best bet would be something like a datsun B210 or first gen civic or something like that. Or even an old golf even though it will never work

when i started i knew almost nothing about cars but always had love to old cars or cars in general and also had a good technical understanding.
with 21 a bought a 66 impala which was kind of a shitbox. a year and a half later i bought an 67 impala 4 door and never could be happier.

as for the wrenching, a car from the 60s is quite easy. you have enough room to work on, simple mechanics, and almost none electronic besides of ignition, light and radio (any maybe stuff like powerwindows and such) but its still realy simple. For the problems which occured i just googled most of the time. I bought the manuals which gets a shit ton of information and i just researched every step that i did.
if you got time in the evening, just watch some videos about changing drumbrakes instead of porn and youre good to go, and so on with other stuff. get contact who drive these cars too, go to meetings and on

i dont use this car as a daily, because i simple cant afford it. since that i live in germany gas is quite expensive. and i also wouldnt drive it here because parts are expensive and other people are dicks on the road. and the streets are build for small german cars so i often have problems finding parking spots and stuff like that.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm less than half an hour from Pittsburgh, that's including highway 376 traffic. Beaver county PA

I'm comfortable with getting a RWD car, I was expecting it honestly. I thought the vast majority of cars that were before the 90's were RWD. No data or anything to back that up, just my general newbie observations.
>>
>>16943514
I'd take a four door Impala over a two door.
>>
>>16946011
Remember this, most problems will end up being electrical.
A Detroit drivetrain can outlive you and if you freshen it up, i mean people used to daily these cars, there's no reason you can't either.
>>
>>16946011
>I thought the vast majority of cars that were before the 90's were RWD

Well, you're not really wrong. Up until the '80s, even econoshitboxes were RWD: things like the Datsun 210, Chevette, Pinto.

But then imports. Things like the Honda Civic, Toyota Tercel, Dodge Omni, and the VW Rabbit. There's a huge grey area from ~1985 until about 1995 where full- and mid-size cars shifted over to FWD. Not really so much for Chrysler, I think they made their last RWD car besides the Viper in about 1989 or so.

So uh, I guess my point is:
>'80s compact/subcompact = FWD
>'80s mid-size = could be either
>'80s full size = RWD

It insulates the carb from the heat of the manifold. Helps prevent your float bowl from boiling over.

If you live in Arizona or southern California it might be a good idea to block the exhaust crossover as well. If there was a propane version of that engine, those intake gaskets should block it.

I figured I should post here, since I've only really been posting it in night wave threads, also reposting from /mo/.

>rolled my 1970 beetle at autocross
>cracked a piece of the transaxle
>bent a wheel
>ruined the body
later
>bought a rusty 1972 with no engine
>stripped the 1970 body and removed it from it's floorpans
>cleaned up the 1972 body a bit and removed it from it's floorpans
>took the transaxle part off the 1972 to replace the broken 1970 part
>put the wrecked 1970 body on the rusted out 72 floorpans and had them hauled off

And that's about where I am with it. The 1972 body and 1970 floorpan both need more work but I'm confident I can get it running and driving next opportunity I have to work on it.

The 1970 body was already dressed up (fenders, bumpers, mirrors, etc.) like a 1960s model, which was strange to begin with. A stock 1972 body is basically a 1970, only major difference I can think of is the rear window being an inch or two larger. It doesn't really feel like I'm creating a franklestein monster, just swapping parts.

Its an inline fuel pump, and I need a return line so here's my plan

Feed: tank (sumped or modded sending unit) > 1/2 hose > Pump > 3/8 hose > fuel rails

Return (from the fuel rail): 3/8 hose > Original steel feed line > into tank

So its either I weld in a 1/2" steel line next to the original feed (now return) drop in line, or buy a new tank and weld a sump to it.

Fuel's boiling somewhere. Could be in the float bowl, could be in the line between pump and carb, could be in the engine compartment before the pump. Anything that isn't stock is suspect. Excess rubber hose is also suspect since that stuff just absorbs heat and keeps it.

When I let my mom drive my Camaro she kept trying to shift it. She'd never driven an automatic before, and I doubt she will again any time soon. She's also terrified to be a passenger in it for some reason. I'd be surprised if it puts out anything close to 250 horse. It had the smogshit removed but that's all.
>>
>>16955061
henlo u stinky euro.

Vaporlock *is* the correct term when you're dealing with a carbureted engine.
The fuel pump creates a lower pressure in the fuel line going back to the tank, and that low pressure causes fuel to boil at a lower temperature.

It's a really common thing here in Arizona, especially when temperatures get over about 95 freedom units. That's uh, 35 baguettes?

There's a couple things you can do to mitigate the problem:

1. Put an electric fuel pump as close to the tank as you can. You'll have to make sure the pressure coming out is correct for the carb or you'll have major problems

2. Insulate the fuel line between the tank and mechanical pump. Keep that nasty exhaust heat off it.

3. Put an EFI pump in the tank, add a regulator up by the carb and a return line. Lots of work but you'll never have vaporlock again
>>
>>16955112
she drives the 442 like once a year so I dont think this is going to be any different. Nice excuse to restore a car without her bitching though
>>
>>16955133
Well, putting an EFI pump in the tank is the one thing that keeps me off TBI in the first place. at that point I might as well redo everything.

My current pump is by the driver side front wheel, so I guess that's bad, but again, I don't want to redo the fuel system. Not until The Great Rebuild anyway.

I can try and shield the fuel line though, for starters. Seems like a cheap and simply enough fix to hold me off.

>>16955163

>Is that even the right term when dealing with carbs?
Yes, the nature of carbs makes it easy for gas to vent into the atmosphere if it starts boiling. It's also a huge fire hazard.

Gasoline simply bursts into flames at 500 degrees while headers/manifolds can easily be this temperature.

My bike does this all the time in traffic, if the heater starts climbing you'll basically start smelling pump gas because it's venting out.

ill be going that route in the next year or two with my truck.
just make sure you put a bypass reg in and as close to the carb as possible to help prevent fuel boiling

>pump by drivers side wheel
Probably found the problem. Relocate pump first. Preferably back by the tank but if nothing else have it at least as low as the bottom of the tank. A bit lower would be nice to enhance the siphon effect. See that the fuel line to the pump if you're keeping it up front for now is nowhere close to exhaust. Running it on top of the subframe is common and that's too close. Move it or place a heat shield. From the pump to the carb there needs to be a minimum 1/2 inch clearance between steel line and any engine component. And if using a Holley carb you might want to get one of those carb heat shields from Moroso (Summit Racing). Small blocks don't usually need them but it can't hurt. Big block needs one for sure.

I didn't really know how shitty Vegas was until I got out of my neighborhood (Centennial Hills) and went to school at CSN on Cheyenne while I was still in high school. Taking public transit for the first time going from Tule Springs to Rancho then to Cheyenne redpilled me on how shitty Vegas can be. Schizophrenics talking into perfume bottles about safehouses, a heroin user shooting up at the bus stop, drunks, homeless ,etc. North Town is a shit hole.

I have a major problem with vapor lock in my galaxie when the temps get over a certain about 200. I even routed the fuel line as far as possible away from the engine, it's basically hitting the inner fender well on it's way from the pump to the carb. It helped a bit but still did that shit.

There's a few ways to fix it, install an inline electronic pusher pump as close to possible to the gas tank, which would supplement the mechanical puller pump, you'd probably also need a fuel pressure regulator as well.

Install an insulator between the carb and the intake, which will help as well, That's most likely going to help the most, but it's not always the problem.(gas boiling away when it reaches the carb). You can either buy a phenolic carb gasket or make one out of 3/4" plywood, i made mine, and it worked wonders on that old 390 i had. They also sell those same types of gaskets for fuel pumps, i'm pretty sure.

do you have a fan shroud? If you don't, either get one or convert to electronic fan. I'm converting to electronic in my galaxie because 400 engine swap and I don't want to waste time fabbing a shroud for a mechanical fan i catch my fingers on all the time anyway.

Vapor lock sucks, if you install a clear fuel filter after the pump(on it's way to the carb) you'll be able to tell where exactly it's not getting gas with a quick peek under the hood.
>>
>>16957436
I don't have the underhood space to install a spacer, I'm afraid. My aircleaner is already rubbing against the hood in some points.

I'll see if I can move the pump further backwards.

Thanks for all the advice so far guys. I'll start with the simple things first and see how far that gets me.

My lightbar is very similar to that, same Whelen cross bar and mounting feet. Mine isn't permanently mounted. Do you happen to know how it's permanently mounted?

Modern lightbars have predrilled holes in the mounting feet. These are rubbery plastic feet and gutter hooks. How is his mounted? Awesome looking car! Wish my paint was that cleen. Especially on the hood and front bumper filler.

New 20 gal fuel tank on the way from Spectra for the Scottsdale, $120 (after shipping + CAD conversion) w/ new straps, not bad at all.

Found out some interesting shit regarding the transition to TBI in these trucks too while researching tanks. In '82 (I think) GM switched to in-tank fuel senders for the 10-Series. In '87 TBI was introduced for the 10-Series and GM added baffles (walls) to the interior of the tank to minimize fuel slosh while driving. My truck had the tank replaced some time in the past and the last owner installed a 16 gallon short box tank from an earlier year. Because the tank is from a carberated truck it doesn't have the internal baffles, this causes a couple of minor issues in a TBI truck.

First problem is that, due to the huge amount of fuel slosh in saddle tanks, the fuel gauge is almost constantly fluctuating +/- a quarter tank. Pair that with an old fuel sender/float and your fuel level reading is basically useless.

Second problem is that when you take a fast and sharp right turn with less than a quarter tank of fuel, the fuel slosh is large enough that it exposes the in-tank fuel sender entirely, which can cause a sudden drop in power or even a stall in a TBI truck. There's usually enough gas in the bowl that a carbureted truck isn't noticeably affected by this.

At the end of the day it's not a big deal to run an old tank in a TBI truck, mine has been this way for at least 100,000 km, but I have encountered the power drop/stall issue on hard right turns while low on gas before, although very rarely, so it's refreshing to know what's causing it.

79 trans am dude here again with another stupid question. I recently put in a new coolant temp sender and fixed my temp gauge but now since I can see the temperature I'm noticing that at idle it heats up really quickly. It's pushing above 220 and it's kinda worrying me with how warm it's getting here that I might overheat my engine if I'm ever stuck in traffic. Also anytime I'm driving it stays well below 200 or gets close to that when I'm diving in town. I understand that at idle it's going to get warmer since no air is being pushed into the front of the radiator but I don't think it's supposed to be getting this hot. What would be some things to check for to troubleshoot my cooling system?

Spacing that fan out so it's closer to/inside the shroud will help.

Less air bleeding off the ends of the blades=more air being moved axially
>>
>>16962586
I'll try to track one down and see if that helps.
>>16962969
I'm using the factory gauge on the cluster.
>>16963077
When I get another fan with a clutch I'll do that.

Also I have noticed when cold with the radiator cap off it'll still flow meaning that the thermostat is either stuck or not even there. Would this somehow be causing it to overheat at idle?

>>16936103

there's a theory that removing the thermostat will cause the coolant to flow through the radiator too quickly, not allowing it time to transfer all the built up heat and let the radiator do its job, I doubt thats your case here though, usually that happens to people on the highway when the water pump is really working and pushing that coolant through pretty fast.

I think it might just be your fan, you definitely need a longer spacer, because right now that shroud isnt doing much of nothing. The fan is just whipping air around in the engine bay and not pulling much through the actual radiator.
