>>
>>16958367
I got pretty fucking lucky, not going to lie. It wasn't perfect by any means, but I'm beginning to realize that it was a damn good deal. Old dude I bought it from had a 1-car garage full of motorcycles and motorcycle stuff that fit on, through, and around the normal detritus of organized-chaos old person life. If I remember correctly, he had three dirtbikes including the DR650, two sportbikes, a BMW tourer, and a funny little Honda scooter (the one with the 80's angles; it was maroon). I can't remember the names of all the bikes since I was a noob at the time, but it was fun to just shoot the shit with him about his bikes, amateur racing exploits, and offroad adventures in New Mexico.
>>
Suzuki SV650 2017 (left) or KTM 390 Duke (Right). are these scammy prices
>>
>>16958383
Nice find dude. I find the west has all kinds of nice bikes for sale and for dirt cheap prices. I've checked all states that surround KY, a few good 'looking' deals every once in a while, but at the time already had a bike. Recently it's mostly just shitbikes that probably cost more than they are worth.

The 17 SV650 is an almost brand spanking new production. I'm not surprised it's 8k with taxes and shit. Can't tell you about the KMT though.

I agree, i still think the whole package is an improvement on the gladius and i like the new trellis frame from the old SV.

How the hell did it cost that? I can do a full engine service including filters (air and oil), plugs and oil for ~£80 on a litre bike. That's doing all the work myself and it looks like you do to?

>>16958556
I've not seen that brand in the UK, we have pic related and a couple of others but these are by far the biggest seller. The only issue with frame sliders is if they dig in they can flip the bike fucking up both sides. R&G so frame sliders that bolt up to the engine frame point and swingarm sliders that you just tap in with a mallet. They also do a good range of clutch/engine covers to help prevent burning through the engine casing in a high speed off. I bought R&G frame slider, swigarm sliders, bar ends, clutch and engine covers as well as a tail tidy because I am autistic as fuck about making it all match.

I know anon. I know.

Lesson learned. Go throughly over a used bike. even crack the side covers to make sure everything is in order. There's no telling what sort of dumbfuckery is lurking inside just waiting to ruin your day/week/month.

This could have been much worse. Luckily it was just an afternoon to mostly fix. If that nut hat gotten eaten up but the trans I'd be looking to get a new motor right now.

Pic related is how she sits until I get new fluids and the new lock nut and put the clutch cover back on.
>>
>>16958619
did you inspect whatever chewed up the nut?
>>
>>16958623
No way to do it without splitting the case.

In my magnetic part searching I didn't pick up any trans cogs or anything so that's a good sign.

The gearsets are a much harder steel than the nut so whatever chewed it up is likely in better shape. If something had gotten it really good the nut would have been in worse shape and I would probably be looking at catastrophic case failure with the gearsets popping themselves apart

Whatever damage that was done, if any, will remain a mystery until something internally fails justifying me splitting the case and doing a full rebuild or buying a new motor.

is a 1994 honda sb400sf a viable choice for a begginer?
>>
>>16958783

A decent choice. If you're never ridden before, a single or twin is ideal for getting to grips with clutch control as you can lean on the low down torque to help you a bit. An early CB500 would be a good alternative, though the SB400SF isn't a terrible choice.

It's actually my moms, the Daytona is mine. But it's a comfy fucking bike, with that Corbin seat you can just eat miles all goddamn day. It feels very heavy when you're pushing it around but once you start moving you really don't notice it (unless you jump off something light like the Daytona and straight onto it) If you're looking for a sporty bike you can tour on I would recommend, it's also very reliable surprisingly, it's got 35k miles on it and this year was the first time it needed anything but scheduled maintenance.

because of our climate old cars do really well here. We certainly don't have snow or salt on the roads. As such there are 20 year old cars that run just fine and there isn't much incentive to get new cars. People complain but there is no obstruction to getting an old bomb and running the wheels off it.
If we had laws like that it might change. Sounds lame.
>>
>>16959186
In the US it depends on the state, and then down to the county.
Here's some of the laws in the ones I've lived
Arkansas - None at all
California - LA area, req once a year
Another county I lived, only when you buy the car
Colorado - One county doesn't have it

And then it also depends on the vehicle.

>>16959138
Btw, where do you live, you could pay someone to pass it.
>>
>>16959241
>'ve owned japanese, italian, german, british, etc. and all been about the same if you keep up with maintenance.
I've had a ktm690 enduro for 2 years and I dispute this.
Came from teh factory with ripped/cut o ring seal around a valve stem, burning 1000ml of oil every 1000kms. KTM initially refused to perform any investigation or engine rebuild.
I had to pull out the big guns adn write letters before they did it and found the issue.
>>
>>16959252
>Another county I lived, only when you buy the ca
in Australia, you have to do a cursory 'safety certificate' when you change ownership of a car. It's pretty basic and covers brakes, windscreen, rust etc. Doesn't cover emissions at all. Interestingly you can fail in my state if your windscreen wiper blades are fucked.
>>
>>16959256
Why did you right 1000ml, not just litre.
>>
>>16959256
Maybe, never owned KTM and I don't really have any desire to.

Also I only buy used bikes that are a few years old so any lemons would have been sorted out by then.
>>
>>16959261
>Also I only buy used bikes that are a few years old so any lemons would have been sorted out by then.
I'd just suggest that you would be less likely to have a lemon with a honda than with a KTM, i've owned several honda's and 1 ktm. never agian.
>>
>>16959259
The real question is why he didn't write 1000ccm instead
>>
>>16959259
because KTM tried to say it was only 750ml which happens to be the manual outside toleracnce. They tried to argue about this, splitting hairs rreally, saying that they wouldn't do an engine rebuild because it was so close to that dramatically wide tolerance (ie. 750ml per 1000kms is fine.
>>
>>16959258
Nope, only thing they car about is the emissions.
The dmv doesn't even see the car, they just want the paper saying it passed smog.

AR was the best state I owned a car.
$20 total to title and register. But AR does keep a balanced budget, so they don't normally fuck people over in taxes.

yeh it was, that's in like racing extreme situations. But they tried to hide behind the technicality (the workshop manager).

Each country has it's own share of issues over the last few years... Cylinder liners in the R6, Electronics in just about every Jap bike from 2000-2010 (particularly Suzuki), KTM have had piston/cylinder issues with the RC8 engine and it's variants I believe. I guess the issue with the bigger capacity bikes is a lack of sales volume versus the 125 shit they ride all over Asia and a lack of testing as a result.

that's another thing, I wanted warranty done work and the dealership was covertly in email conversation with KTM HQ about whether or not the work should be performed (same thing for fork seals and some other things that went wrong). Anyway, in Australia ultimately the retailer, the dealership bears the responsibility, but I wanted to speak to KTM HQ about this dealerships shitty actions. They refused to give me any KTM contacts and google only located some shitty website with no phone numbers or emails. Fuck KTM, I can't imagine having any of these problems with a honda. >>
>>16959883

>>
>>16959988
>Would the extra wheelbase not benefit the ride comfort?

Not really no. If anything it'd make the already poor turning circle of a cruise even worse. Lengthening the swingarm does nothing for comfort, it's to make it harder for the front end to lift so you can launch harder.
>>
>>16959988
Because ride comfort can also be fixed with good, soft springs and a good seat.

Longer forks have more rake, which a more stable tracking on highways.

Hey fellas I'd appreciate some input on this matter:

in Colorado, 50cc scooters/mopeds are $5.85 to register and require only a driver's license as well as insurance

I've been trying to find a decent Honda/Yammy 50cc scoot so I can take my car off the road for a month or two and perform some major maintenance, but I stumbled upon a 1990 Honda NS50F (pic related) in the same price range which would be a hell of a lot more fun

Trouble is, the scooter law is defined as "having no manual clutch" but the NS falls under the category in every other way, I did the DMV's "Definition Tool" and when I put in "manual clutch" it could not define the vehicle

Registration is just sending an affidavit saying that it falls under the rules, etc.

Could I get away just registering it as a scooter? Would the DMV/insurance company have some sort of alarm tripped for "manual clutch" if I try to register it as a scoot? "Honda NS50" seems pretty incognito as far as that goes I guess

I don't really want to bother getting a motorcycle license and whatnot (sry)

Thanker
>>
>>16960428
thanks, will look into them

the reason im asking for this specific model is because i found one with low milage (<4000) which the owner is willing to sell for around 2000$ (european so prices will be different, price is more than ok) but i dont wanna end up with paying more than that for fixing it back up.

nah, it's an i4 that pretends to be a v4
you do this to keep using the same block while enjoying better throttle response, and a flatter torque curve
it also helps reduce the understeer most Vs have and uses a single camshaft, but is not as compact as a proper V4

No power, shit QC, ride is boring and uninspiring, all the problems of a vintage bike but none of the benefits. Also you look like a hipster faggot.

Pic related is a '14 V7 Racer, dyno'd at 38 horsepower stock, after $3500 in engine mods (lightened and balanced crank, flowed heads, lightened flywheel, high comp pistons, full exhaust) it made 44 HP.

i've heard the V7 II and III fixed a few of the previous versions issues, haven't looked into any of the other models. They don't seem to get much attention, I've only got 1 guzzi dealer in my state. I've heard there is a pretty active forum community around that will be able to help you with questions on individual models and generations

You can inspect the pleats of your oil filter (cartridge filters can be cut open with a sharp chisel) if curious about crumbs.

If I remember right the head is flat, no combustion chamber and the combustion chamber is in the piston, so both exhaust and intake have fucking garbage flow. Apparently the new V9's have a real hemi head so they'll be not shit, but they only put them in gay bobbers and cruisers and shit.

The reason the design is so shit is because Piaggio owns both Guzzi and Aprilia, so they don't want competition between the two, because theirs only so much room in the market for niche Italian bikes.

Ahh you mean MY2017, I read it as though you had pre-ordered. There's a GSXR1000r in the BSB this year and the team racing it say its competitive but they haven't had enough time with it yet, I guess they would say that though..

Have you got a quote? Here in the UK, for a 1000cc sportsbike I pay £600 fully comp, add on a VFR800 and its £720. You can only crash one bike at a time.

There are some good wiring threads on Chop Cult. I'd take power from an accessory fuse or add a lead with a blade style circuit breaker. Breaker should be as close to your power source as practical. Ten or fifteen amps is fine.

If you get good bare crimp connectors and use heat shrink tubing you'll be happy. Ignore the plastic-sleeved shit at auto stores. I get my connectors and heat shrink tubing via Ebay for dirt cheap. A set of crimpers lasts a lifetime so get them at the start.

I'm forced to use public insurance because of where I live. They have an online insurance calculator that's relatively accurate to what you actually pay. As an example, pic related is the quote for a 2006 gsxr 600, there's one for sale for $5500 locally, which is what I based the value on. I also have to pay the yearly total over the course of the 5 month riding season instead of all 12.
>>
>>16961329
I can make more with less out of my DR650. That's legitimately sad.
>>
>>16961466
To add on, there's no bundling or promotional rates, due to the nature of public insurance.

Price is right. Get it and go fucking ride. Autspergers worry too much about what you ride to the point they neglect riding.

Depending on how much your bike is worth take a look at:

Almax/Pragmasis chains. I have a series IV Almax with a Squire lock and it weighs a tonne (19mm link). Uncroppable but still vulnerable to an angle grinder.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozppzywsLsk

I think in the video he breaks the jaws on the cropper. You want that going around something substantial like a ground anchor which is cemented into the earth with at least 80kg of cement. If you don't have private property and it's going into a carpark wrap it around one of the big steel support beams.

Tracker:
Datatool Trakking is a live system which monitors the ignition 24/7, if the ignition is turned on or the bike moved you get a text, if you dont reply to the text you get a call, if you dont answer they phone the police to check on the bike. I got quoted with and without a Trakking on a 1290 R and the quote went from £2500 to £1000 fully comp

Alarmed disclock:
I'd recommend something like:
https://www.abus.com/uk/Mobile-Security/Motorbike-Scooter/Brake-disc-locks/GRANIT-Detecto-X-Plus-8077

If you fit it properly you can't pick it without turning the lock and the alarm going off.

All the above would cost you ~£600-800 depending on length of chain. If you need a trakking you have to pay a monthly subscription but I dont think they've lost a bike yet. There was a post on facebook by the police saying they tracked one to a container and found 6 other bikes. Attached code gets you 30% off the annual fee.

Whatever you do DO NOT BUY AN OXFORD CHAIN
>>
>>16961550
Does this work in the US or is there a US version.
Our bike insurance is cheap as fuck over here anyway, but it might be worth it.
Also, I get worried when I'm in my room and I hear a bike start up, or go by. I have the only bike in the parking lot.
>>
>>16961271

>>
>>16960051
Build what you think will work and stop posting since you know it all. You can then kill any counter-arguments with testable proof.
>>
>>16961595
Trakking?

You can get cheapshit trakkers off ebay (should have mentioned that before) They cost next to fuck all (£20/$25) but aren't "active" as such all you can do it text the tracker and it will give you it's location. More advanced alarms will text you when an attack is in progress. The limitation with trackers is that once they are put into a suitably shielded van the GPS is lost but work on the GSM network to get the location down to around a 300 metre square area. The cheaper trackers need your own SIM card in them also.

To anyone looking for a new chain and is considering the cheaper/store brands, watch this:

If it's clean and runs well, the mileage is no problem. Especially in Burgerland people don't put serious miles on mosickles resulting in odd ideas about mileage. I'd rather have one someone rode and maintained than a yard sitter.

You can also add a discreet kill switch or remove the fuse that powers the ignition.

We used to do that with our wrecker. They had several steering columns rekt over the years but never lost a truck.

>>16961695
You need to get one thats insurance approved but at $300 a year its not worth it unless the bike has sentimental value, On a $8k or more bike it will have an impact. Over here we have Thatcham ratings (1-6) where 1 is a simple disc lock around the brake to 6 which is the trakking.

>>16961703
>remove the fuse that powers the ignition

Every bike I have had has required as a minimum either the seat (maybe battery as well) or the fairing to be removed which makes it a bit impractical for day to day. Kill switches are great though but can add to the electrical fuckery on some bikes if they are exposed to the elements and water gets in there.
>>
>>16961775
It just has I spent money on it value.
But not enough money for me to pay for tracking.
I'm sure over time, I'll become less worried of it. Probably gonna trade up in a year or two anyway if I'm honest.
>>
>>16961634

That's the thing; I did. Bike's 35 years old and I don't think was taken very good care of by the PO. For fucks sake when I got it I changed the oil and over 5 liters came out (The engine holds 2.4L) and there was no air filter.

Didn't ride today, but I rode to work yesterday. It was dark and damp when I rode to work, I left the building and walked to lunch about 11 AM and it was fucking gorgeous, and by the time I got off work it was fully overcast and dreary. It didn't prevent me from riding all across the countryside and to dinner though.
