FAQ:
Can I fit?
>If you're under 6'2" and aren't obese you can fit without modification. If bigger you can do a foamectomy, modify pedals and replace door pulls.
Can I daily drive one?
>Yes most people can daily drive a Miata no problem.
Even in the snow?
>Yes Miatas can drive well in the snow (with snow tires).
How much should I expect to spend?
>Depends on the area, but for a clean title low mileage car:
3k for an NA6
4.5k for an NA8
5.5-6.5k for an NB1
6-8k for an NB2
9-25k for an NC

cosmetic or functional? if later then i recommend getting upper shift boot, if you didn't replace it yet it will most likely need replacing
>>16929683
Interior looks fresh anon, great job.

Bro i'm european so i dunno about US prices but i'd say 9-12 for an NC and 11-16 for an NCFL, i can get used NDs with 23k euros
>>16929786
Yeah that was a typo, meant 15k*, sorry m8s.
>>16929747
thank you my man, the only thing that annoys me is the shift knob which is quite worn out
what do you guys think about pic related?

On a side note, an exhaust makes the Miat far more fun to drive. It's just so much more immersive. It's obnoxious and the note isn't very flattering but fuck those downshifts sound awesome

honestly i don't care, i wouldn't be buying a miata if i cared about safety

Just bought an NB miat with really low miles. I made a fantastic deal considering how prices go over here, I could probably sell it right away for more than I bought it, but I'll stick to it for the time being. No good pics just yet.
The only thing that constantly bothers me is how it's out on the parking near the road and now I'm in constant anxiety about it since it's my first car. I hope that feeling goes away with time.

>>16937613

NC just looks like a pigfat miata because thats what it is
>>16938199
NC looks like a rectangle with rounded corners.
NA looks like a bar of soap. (Cute!)
NB looks like poor man's FD. (A best!)
>>16937576
I have to admit, the Miata was a better purchase just on the fact that the MR2 was a death trap because of the funky weight distribution. I think your model was more refined though. Shame it never caught on, I actually liked the 2000 model.
>>16938199
>pigfat
While being faster than both the NA and NB in straight lines AND slalom. Except maybe the Mazdaspeed NB.
It's almost like Mazda engineers knew what they were doing.
>>16938945
That's mostly because of the suspension geometry on the sw20. The third gen is the best in almost every way except luggage capacity
>>16939446

7:58 is utterly bad for BTG
I go close to 8:00 full ring with a 370Z and BTG is something like 20sec shorter.
>>16940483
considering the 370Z has almost twice the power it's not a bad showing from the miat
>>16940522
No, don't get me wrong. It's good for a Miata and I attribute the good time also to the driver.
But compared to other cars in the sub 30k price range it is slow.
>>16929917
cause a lot of fags own Miatas, MR2s, and subarus
I dont know how or why that is, I like mustangs and Mercs
>>16940536
A NC 2.0 like that is more like 10k or less even including the mods he's done to it.
But yes a lot of it's down to the driver. That's Koenigsegg's chief test driver who owns that car.
>>16940551
Talking about price as new car.
However, Miata drivers should not care about times. You got a good chassis and sun.
350Z, 300ZX, 944, Supa mk1, RX7 FC, RX8
What to pick as possible next car?
>>16941265
i suppose 350z would be fine, in fact i'm getting one for a daily
not selling my mx5 though, i still want to have a fun car and nissan is more of a GT than a pure driving machine
as for the others, they are either too urealiable (300zx, especially turbo version), simply inferior to a miata (like 944) or their handling is just not as good (rx-7 FC)
maybe rx8 would also be a good pick, but that's only if you find one in a good condition - sadly people are too retarded to handle rotary and unlike FC rx8 reliability is hindered further by much harsher emission standards
if you want a fun and fast car get s2000, otherwise stick with the miata, maybe turbocharge it if you want more power

I was wanting to buy a miata as my first car but have never drove a manual transmission before how would i go about buying one?
>>16943733
Isn't the 1.6 better anyway?
>>16944287
Check spark to discount ignition issues. If no spark, it'll probably be about $200 to fix assuming it's distributor+sparkplugs+wires. If it's a larger electrical issue stay away. High idle could be that combined with a missing/damaged vaccum line for IAC. If the body's clean get it.
I had a cozy moment with miata by the lake today. I didn't think I would take a pic when I parked, otherwise I would've parked where there wasn't a dumpster behind it.
>tfw it was nice out today so my bf took me out in his miata today
>>16944361
i dont think its a larger electrical issue? what would be a giveaway of that?
>>16944326
No, except for the oil line if you want to turbo. And even then that's just convenience. Higher revs are good, but it's not like you can't do that to a 1.8 if you wanted to
>>16944326
How would the smaller engine be better?
>>16944371
Is there any janky wiring to the battery or around it? Do the radio and lights work properly and at reasonable brightness? Check the battery with a voltmeter and the alternator as well to see if they're putting out enough voltage.
>>16944386
the radio and lights worked just fine. cant check the battery with a voltmeter unless i check it out again.
>>16944373
Wait. So are the 1.6 or 1.8 better for turbo?
>>16944408
The 1.8 is in every logical way.
There are, for whatever reason, more full kits designed for the 1.6 though.
>>16944408
1.8 every second of every day.
>>16944408
I.8. More power, the lower redline doesn't really matter all that much for turbos, more mass of exhaust gases since it's a bigger engine. Really the only drawback is that the 1.6 has a high preassure oil output that you don't get in the 1.8, but you can easily use a sandwich plate for the oil filter to get that instead, as well as a real oil pressure gauge which you should run anyways. The only other drawback I can think of is that most 1.8 miatas are OBD2, and that can be a pain if you have inspections. Otherwise, it's simply better.

the miatas all there, its just either a simple engine swap or some wiring issues. but i NEED a car to daily and i need some space for my pizza delivery job.
im so genuinely torn.
hey guys, there is a fair amount of surface rust on my frame rails. would it be OK to take a wire wheel to these and get it all off and then cover it with some rustoleum primer? i hit it a bit with the wire wheel already and just clouds and clouds of rust started falling from it. the metal below it seems to still be in good shape however
>>16944721
Of course it's ok, it would be unwise to wait any longer if you plan on keeping the car. But don't just spray primer on it, even "rust proof" primer won't last long on an underbody that sees moisture. you need to really strip it down good and then paint it with POR-15 or a similar frame coating.

>>16948948
But assuming both are within $500 of each other? What if it came with a hard top? Is an lsd better to have than 30k less miles?
>>16948987
I bought a car very similar to the green one and I can tell you that mileage on these cars isn't as important as you might think. Keep in mind that even if the miles are low, many things have to be replaced because of age, not mileage. Maintenance on both should be similar.
The hardtop is an easy $700-800 extra, especially if it matches the paint. The LSD is very much worth it. Since it's a 94' it means you get the proper torsen LSD and not the VLSD shit that was on the earlier cars.
Do you plan to keep it stock, or tasteful mods? I get the feeling you don't want to rice it out since you're looking for a nice one, but what do you plan to do with the car? Mine is fully stock, except for some 15x7 rims for better tire selection and an aluminium rad to help out with track temps. I keep the OEM rims just in case though, so it's all able to return to stock looking.
>>16949018
My commute to work is less than a mile, and I have two other vehicles, so I'd have this car as a semi-daily driver as opposed to my p71 cvpi I use for the same duty and for shooting guns in the desert. The Miata would be the nicer of the two I don't get dirty and also would use for tht occasional night out or weekend trip to California with the wife. I'd like to do some tasteful mods such as a set of rpf1s and nice suspension, and maybe some other performance stuff down the road if my budget and life allows. So maybe the m edition is more suitable for me?
Anyone in the Central Florida area have NA parts they'd be willing to part with?
Got a 92 c package I'd like to get up and running again and could use any spare stuff people have lyin' around.
What are the physical differences between the 1.6 and 1.8?
Are they generally the same aside from bore and associated internals?
>>16944425
Might be because the 1.6 is more rev happy and thus spools faster.
>>16949260
Bore spacing is shorter on the 1.6 hence why you can't drop a 1.8 head onto it. Some other minor differences as well.
>>16949103

>being as retarded/bored as me

>>16948888
>nigger rims on a miata
Why
>>16930087
I remember an anon a long time ago saying how dangerous NA Miata airbags are because they are primitive and deploy at maximum force no matter what speed the collision is (rather than a more progressive deployment) and many cases of injury have been reported due to the airbag. NB airbags are supposedly much better. Also, in many states an airbag deployment in a collision means an instant salvage title, even if the collision wasn't serious or resulted in structural damage.
>>16949673
All airbags deploy at maximum force, no matter the speed. That's how they work, it's an explosive charge. If the sensor trips, it's gonna blow full force. The difference might be that modern cars are not as likely to trip the airbag sensor in slow collisions.
>>16949636
you have bad taste my man.
So my Miata is leaking oil from multiple locations, including the oil pan, rear main seal (presumably), and somewhere above the ps pump.
I also rounded off a bolt on the bellhousing in an inaccessable location and can't replace the clutch.
Should I just pull the engine and unfuck everything with it out?
>>16950513
Well, yes. You should. Can you?
>>16950555
>>16950513
Yes; it's honestly pretty easy to pull the engine. And once it's out, replacing all of those things is piss easy.

At that hp number you'll need a 1.8 LSD and axles to hold the power reliably. Better engine mounts are probably needs as well, possibly diff mounts.

BFG Sport Comp-2s in 195/50R15 or Yokohama S.Drives in 205/50R15 on stock NB wheels?
Before I Google it - rotary swapped miata, yea or nay? I like me some angry bees exhaust, and a fast miata would be cool.
I have 10 grand to buy/build a fast car (just for fun). I've had fun with my friend's miata, so why/why not?

>>16956017
I bought this track ready Miata for $3.5k
There is no need for an LS swap.
Have you driven one yet? Sure its gutless with its 1.6 or 1.8 but its loads of fun and turbocharging it is a "cheap" alternative. A full flying miata turbo kit goes for around $5k
I want to share a kinda funny story with you guys. A few nights ago, I had to travel from Boston to a suburb which is about 50 minutes away. I was going to wait until the morning but I said fuck it at 2am because I couldn't sleep and went for it.
I am pretty familiar with the route and always take the highway but my GPS was telling me to take the back roads so I did. It wound up actually being one long ass stretch of road that goes through several towns.
It was the most incredible ride of my life. I did not even see another car the entire way back. I was straight hooning at 60mph on these cozy 30mph town roads for 45 minutes straight. It was so bizarre too cause the area around here is decently dense but there aint shit out at 2am. Gonna have to do that again one of these days
>>16955939
I've explained this a thousand times, fake manual modes are NOTHING like manual. You can argue whether or not one's better, but they're not similar at all, once you learn how to drive manual you'll think of fake manual modes as "it's an automatic transmission that I can tell to shift if the transmission feels like it after a few seconds maybe"
Just get a manual or a different car
>>16955939
Kill yourself.
hey guys, I am going to pick up a hard top for my NA. From what I understand, it looks like it should just be more or less plug and play with the standard latches up at the top of the windshield and the latches on the trunk
but....what is this bullshit about striker plates I keep hearing about? Are these necessary? I saw a few YouTube videos and it looks like people installed their hard tops without using the striker plate side mounts.
I looked inside my miat and it looks like the striker plate spot is already drilled and everything....it's just the plate itself that was removed
>>16954292
I care anon, I've been looking at that option since even my quality sealed beams can't do shit unless they're on high beams.
>>16956509
You don't need the side latches, but the top squeaks a bunch and is really annoying without them. It also helps seal the cabin a bit better. If you have the holes for the striker plates there just buy a set.
>>16956106
that was the car you bought? lel. nice. im thinking about picking up a second one just so i don't waste $3k track prepping and ruining my current daily miata
some pile of shit like this would be nice for $2500. already has coils, roll bar, meme seats with meme steering wheel, etc...

Ok /mg/ you've convinced me to go and test drive a miat. Will I understand the miata love within a 20 minute drive or do I have to own one to really get with the program?
If experience makes a difference, I've only had my license since January this year but I consider myself a competent driver, done around 6000 miles so far, many of them racing around country roads, and driven a bunch of cars since I started learning last year

Auto is fine, Fuck what others think
>>16958127
No, it really isn't. I'll concede that the auto on the ND isn't terrible, but you really notice it whenever you hit a backroad. The car is never in the right gear, it shifts too soon, and it takes too long to shift into gear. If it was a DCT I might be able to deal with it, but as it stands that transmission does not belong in that car.
Don't even get me started on the earlier autos by the way. The auto on the NA was the worst thing in the world, it was like someone took a tranny meant for a minivan and just put it in there.
so i got my first miata and im super stoked, but ive got to do a gasket head replacement

>>16958464
Well if the engine is sketchy check for cracks in the block. Make sure all the mating surfaces are perfectly flat, you could clean any carbon buildup if you'd like as well. Really you could do a lot of things
>>16958470
the engine is brand new so i dont think its sketchy. im just hoping nothing else is wrong with it

Hey m8s I'm looking for more power from my NC1 and am torn between two options:
-2.3/2.5L MZR swap (probably from a mazda 3 sp23/axela/whatever)
-Flyin miata NC supercharger kit
I wanted to turbo swap but I cant because RHD and steering column so this is what my alternative is. I'm feeling supercharger more to keep the weight down (have already done some weight reduction because hard top).

It's hard to make out anything if you're new to it, but it's a decent start.
Get the head done anyway, new gasket. Replace thermostat. Check water pump while you're doing the timing belt, take note of the coolant (any oil contamination? Check oil, too. Valve cap might have some shit on it).
Get a leakdown test, rings could be poked leading to excess blowby and PCV crap.

>For safety reasons, all convertibles (Boxster, Miata, Corvette, BMW Z4, Honda S2000, Pontiac Solstice etc.) are required to have a roll bar that meets the following two criteria in order to be eligible to run during any event. 1) The roll bar must be in the fixed position and visible at all times. This means that roll bars which are designed to automatically deploy are not acceptable unless they are in the full upright and locked position at all times. 2) The roll bar must allow the driver to pass the “broomstick” test which means that the top of the drivers helmet must be below the line from the top of the roll bar to the top of the windshield. There are aftermarket roll bars and/or seats which can be used to help meet these requirements. If your convertible meets these standards, then you are welcome to participate! >losing HP
>with the heater on
Are you trying to imply the blower motor's load on the alternator is enough to sap even a single horsepower from the Miata? Because with the heater on that is the only additional parasitic loss. Heaters work by allowing coolant to flow through a radiator in the HVAC plenum, it requires almost no work from the engine at all, and even improves cooling.
You are screwing yourself out of comfy by removing the heater, and having no blower in a DD is a recipe for a foggy windshield, so you might as well leave it in and just chuck the AC compressor if you are genuinely trying to improve performance.

What would you think about a NB vs a NC as a DD for a first car? I like the fact that the NC has more security features by default (rollbar, side airbags, stronger windshield or so they said in some forums), its bigger and has more hp, but it costs 7-10k eurobucks, while the NB is just 4-5K and is commented as being "a better driver's car than a NC".
