Thanks a bunch! He's really cool as shit, no idea why he chose me. But him and off-roading came to me at the same time so it must be something. Maybe I'll take him on the trail with me tomorrow. I know doggos are good, but anyone every wheel with a cat?
>>
>>16901566
No idea. But I've wheeled with a snake before. Cats should be fine but just make sure they're alert the whole time.
(and no. that's not a taytay joke. i've legit put a cornsnake on the dashboard whilst driving)

Also maybe don't do too much technical stuff since you don't want them to jump on your lap suddenly when you're balanced on a trying to operate the clutch at the right point.
>>
>>16901587
I really don't get the correlation between a snake and a pop star, so I wouldn't mistake them.
And the trail is pretty technical, so maybe not a good idea. But no clutch worries, I wheel auto. I'm a little interested in why you ended up with a snake on your dash though.

Uh - it's a weird normie thing, unfortunately.

Anyway, the snake was because it was a hot day and we wanted her to get some sun shine. So we did a few s l o w r o l l around the block and took it off the road down the technical service roads. She spread out all over the dashboard and loved it. Might've been a bit too rough near the end when she curled back into a ball.

Lock-Rite lockers are fantastic even before you take price into account. Just make sure if you're installing on the front that you have some sort of free-wheeling hub system to disengage the axles.
Don't know anything about Treadwright tires but a lot of people locally here are running different Chinese branded 10 ply tires like "Lakesea" to great success. Only complaint about them is they don't last as long as American branded tires (fine if they're offroad only on a second set of wheels).
>>
>>16902139
It was pretty damn good, mixed the sweet and hot BBQ, burnt the bacon as little bit, then passed out a minute. Please don't ever accuse me of wheeling a Toyota again.
>>
>>16902679
Wrap the bacon up in aluminum foil and throw it in the oven.

Cooks it evenly so you don't crisp the lean before the fat starts to firm up and holds in just enough moisture to keep it soft without being greasy.

Going to valley of the moon trail off the 8 by the Jacumba hot springs. Actually pretty close to you cause you live in lakeside right? It's a "2wd" rated trail but the way I went last time had a gate keeper obstacle that I had to pull 2 unlocked 4wd's up. And I'm only going again to explore the parts we didn't do last time. Though I would actually be down to meet up in the next coming weeks before the season is over to do a run together. I wouldn't mind pulling you up some obstacles if you don't get a rear locker by then lmao

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about. Forgive the poor lighting on living in the eternal darkness of 3rd shift.

Highlighted in yellow is the bracket housing the dead pulley. It is just bolted atop the motor. I figure I can gab up a custom holder, or get something to hold an alternator in place in the spot when the time comes...

Not included in pic are several wires taped off and covered in sliced hoses, making me thing another alternator was originally there.

You certainly can. eBay, and they're a pretty generic size. I'll have a look.
100% with you in terms of outlay buying a new one. I don't think I'd ever buy one that wasn't either second hand (there's usually a fair few in floating around in Aus) or was on the car I bought to begin with.
Thing I like about the ARB bars is a combination of OEM appearance, fantastic clearance and they seem to be the most impervious to our harsh corrugations.
>>16903400
Definitely an alternator. Do you know what sort of amperage your current alternator has? If it's anywhere near 100ish Amp I probably wouldn't bother fitting a second one unless you could do so without spending anything.

Yup, kept it nice and simple. Running '88 rear leafs up front to push the axle forward
>>
>>16903499
I'd keep the same axle too. I'd probably simplify it even further by simply adapting N60 springs or the front end of one of the Aussie N100 Hiluxs including steering, but you'd end up with a more desirable result (fleks). What sort of steering are you going with?

>100amps will be fine

But... But... what about muh 110v electrical system, radios, lights, air compressor, and overkill AC unit I mentioned in the last thread?

>>16897472
>>16897640
>>16897790
>>
>>16903755
What sort of wattage is the inverter? And what sort of amperage does the aircon unit draw?
I think the best thing would be getting one or two decent amp/hour deep cycle batteries and reserving the overhead aircon unit for plug-in power. Keep in mind 2 way radios draw next to nothing, one of those 60mm "160L/min" compressors draw up to around 30amp on startup and a large 100ish litre 12v fridge draws up to 5amp on startup (maintains about 2-3amp).
What sort of alternator have you currently got?
>>
>>16903755
Also, the ability to start the overhead aircon unit will have more to do with the battery's cold cranking amp output. I'd bet the second alternator powered a separate bank of batteries in parallel to achieve such a rating. The alternator amp rating is only relevant to maintaining charge as the way I understand it.
Is that aircon even a 12v and not a 24v? Might pay to check the model of the unit and see its requirements.

Keep in mind this is going to be an overlanding truck further down the road, and the plans are constantly evolving at the moment.

For now I would like something that can power an entire campsite (as a backup in case of generator failure). I would also like the ability to use a welder and power tools if the need arises.

The truck has a 110v electrical system hardwired in, along with a 50a shore power hookup. The only thing missing is the inverter.

The AC unit runs off of 110v. I tried plugging it into an extension cord running to the house but it blew the 15a fuse without even trying. That means I'm looking at a draw of at least 130a from the alternator.

...and the alternator I currently have in is rated for 100a IIRC. I want to boost it up, but I'm not sure if I want a single high output or 2 decent outputs.

...and don't get me started on batteries haha. Like I said, the plans are constantly evolving as I do more and more research.

Although I'm starting to wonder if an aircon unit with the sort of capacity that requires that kind of draw is relevant for the kind of space relative to a large wagon... A reasonable size motorhome maybe, but I'm doubtful you'll get practical use out of it.
The only reasonable circumstance I can see that being used is sleeping in a hot environment where you'd probably have an external genset running it as opposed to having your truck idling all night.

I guess for an Ambulance they needed the capacity to keep the interior temp constant whilst having doors open fairly often during operation.

In the end though, it doesn't hurt to have the redundancy of a second charging unit either, especially if there's already provisions for one to be fitted. And there's no such thing as too much charging capacity either... I'm currently mulling over my 12V power storage options at the moment.

My question is if ARB bumpers are any "safer" than standard fab. bumpers or any. The best part would be if you could get a bumper than can resist forces up to a small tree without breaking but have an exponentially weaker front allowing for more of a "crumple zone" as force multiplies.

I found that out when the mazda cucc crashed into muh Taynger and there's actually a degree of bend in the sides of the front bumper. But the main thing is that underneath it, the fab designed the bumper to bend into the frame connexions so that it adds like 5 cm more of a crumble zone. The only down side is that if I hit a deer, it could go right through the windshield.

Now that I'm getting a Land Cruisey, I'll be looking into the front bumper first for sure. Maybe I'll get that steel plate/ step like they have on the FJ40. Those look cool.

>Now that I'm getting a Land Cruisey, I'll be looking into the front bumper first for sure
what are you leaning towards so far? that is going to be my next purchase as well.

main ones im considering are the slee shortbus, arb deluxe and the dobinson 80 series front.

imo the arb looks the best and is the most classic but it has a few shortcomings: incredibly shitty recovery points, not exactly a great approach angle.
the slee shortbus is incredibly stout, has a better approach angle and recovery points but doesnt offer that much protection against deer
the dobinson is kind of newer to the NA market but a lot of people are saying that it is a lot stouter than the arb and looks almost the same

I'll have to take a couple of pictures tomorrow. I have two vehicles of differing vintages, both happen to have by dumb luck ARB bullbars. The older one is sleeved hard over the chassis and straight bolted, but the later airbag compatible bar from memory has a concertina crumple fixing point. Both are rated for winching.
Hopefully I don't get to test their rating.

Not 100% but I'd imagine the J80 Cruiser bullbar would mount like the former.

>$2500 dollar winch
Uh. Literally why.

Something similar to this but honestly, a $1200 base cost fabricated bumper would probably suffice for the price. Something like I already have. then the added safety bonus is always a plus (especially since they're cheaper than ARBs)

The problem with ARB here is that they have an import and conversion fee that ends up making me pay 10-25% more than a US bought one. I might as well just drive down to buffalo or (((detroit))) to save me money at this point.

>>16904300
>land cruiser bullbar
why would you do this. are you looking to buy the two you requested or do you already have one and just want to transplant the bumpie?
>>
>>16904344
lol thats slightly more than what that bar + winch would cost new. is that faggot serious?
>>
>>16904359
wat. the winch is like $2000 new.
>>
>>16904375
that winch is $1500 new. the arb bull bar is like $900. youd save $100 if you bought both brand new.

then again maybe we have some canabucks exchange rate thing going on, im using US pricing
>>
>>16904449
Holy shit they're only $990 in the states?!
http://store.arbusa.com/ARB-Deluxe-Bar-Toyota-Land-Cruiser-80-Series-90-97-Lexus-LX450-96-97-3411050-P3280.aspx

I was looking at some similar models here and they were going for around $1750. I also like to go to the offroad stores to see their ridiculous pricing and to talk to the salesmen there for fun. Those "custom" bumpers (which are the same as the regular arb accessories) are like $2500. After conversion, that's exactly twice the price that those stores give me.
>>
>>16904482
lol yeah, ive seen them for $900 even as well if you look around. $1750 is completely absurd. look at slee, tjm, ironman and dobinson. im not sure what you can get on the canamarket but theres no way i would ever spend more than $1k on a front bumper unless it was fully custom exactly what i want.

call kurt at cruiser outfitters and ask him what it would cost to ship you one. i guarantee even with shipping youd be no where near $1750.

I carry a 6 pack of Cod Liver in Taynger since they never go bad (-20 to +40 C) so I can just keep them in the back seats all year round. Fat reserves are great for the Canadian winter, too.

As for things that actually taste good, bison, venison, or other game meat store longer than traditional pork or beef. Eat those on the tail end of a two-weeker. Same thing with potatoes and beans.

Hard to give any recommendations on food when we don't know who and where you are, though. So other than autistic, utilitarian food recommendations like cod liver and spam, I don't have any other ideas :^(

That's good to know. The NA Ranger also takes 60 or 80 series snorkels so I wonder if they'd give me a small discount if I were to buy two 80 series snorkels and two bumpers (one front and one back).

Do they come pre-painted? If so, I might just get these over the fabricated bumper that I would have to paint myself.

Though, the other point on painting is that I do want to try my hand at titanium electroplating. It hasn't been done before to my knowledge and it'd be a very, very nice method to "rustproof" your bumper in the Onterrible salt conditions.

Anyway, I'll send over and email right now and see what shipping would be.

but to answer your question, yes the arb bumpers come powder coated to your doorstep. i think most bumpers do nowadays.

Theoretically, I can dissolve a layer of titanium with acid and plate the titanium pure onto any bare metal surface of my choosing. So I could coat the bumper with a thin (50-100 micrometre) layer of titanium that will never "rust". I'm at work now and bored so I just come up with these (((autistic))) ideas. But I guess that's how inventions are made. Who knows. Maybe it'll work out so well I'll open a specialty vehicle electroplating business.

Anyway, venison is great shit. I've accidentally left a raw slab of it out for 36 hours once without it going "bad" (did have to cook it a bit rarer than I'd like, though).

I have to do a test trial with some bare steel and test it against some abrasive surfaces or maybe tape it to my grille and see how it deals with water splash, rain, ice, etc. But titanium is notorious for its tension strength and resistance to corrosion compared to zinc and

Actually, I'm going to toss a thread up right now on zinc-plating (galvanisation) and see what the /o/tists know about this. Maybe /sci/ would be a better place to ask this. I had been under the impression that Zn plating was more or less pointless because of the amount that they would scratch off right off the bat (and then flake off) in harsh climates.

>aoe

>>
>>16905559
Properly plated steel will simply wear off instead of flaking but titanium and zinc both have the problem of if there is a scratch the rust will simply work it's way into the steel and then flake it off.

It's a lo of trouble when undercarriage treatments applied every half year to a year would do the same thing and maybe better.

Not exactly true. Rust doesn't exactly tunnel out like bubbling rust does when it comes to galvanised materials. It can dig a big deeper but a simple sand and paint job will fix that.

Bare steel would also be prone to that scratch issue as whale? Anyway, it looks like zinc plating the bumper might actually be more affordable, practical, and better for the vehicle. /o/ says old cars used to have galvinaisation but something to do with environmental or the automotive jew preventing further production of galvanised cars

>Theoretically, I can dissolve a layer of titanium with acid and plate the titanium pure onto any bare metal surface of my choosing.

While this is entirely true, there's really not much point to it. Once you get a few scratches the bare metal underneath will start to rust out. It will act the same as rattle can paint but look a lot better.

If you're doing it for aesthetics, then just use aluminum plate to build whatever it is you want. I'd think it easier to build a boxed aluminum replacement frame than it would be to strip a vehicle down to bare frame, dissolve enough titanium into solution to fill a bath large enough for a frame, and then submerse the frame in it.

I galvanised a 10 metre pole by using home made electrolysis bags once. now that I have access to larger dishes and an industrial location, it'd be much easier. plus the only thing I want to galvanise is my bumper anyway - not some anon's land cruiser frame :^)
Bed liner on a vehicle frame is invisible. same couldn't be said for a bumper or side rails...

I feel like a layer of zinc followed by powder coating might be the best protection? apparently pure zinc really isn't as flakey as I had originally thought. So galvanising aftermarket bare steel might be worth the small bit of issue.

Also, aluminium frames are very common and very good ideas for vehicle restoration. Unfortunately, I lack the time, dedication, and technical knowhow do that with any vehicle :^(

I'm personally going to be doing a home made rear bar and quarter chop on my Montero, and have it double as an air resivour. Although I have the luxury of already having the spare mounted on the tailgate so I won't have to worry about swinging gates. If there's one critisism I have of Landcruisers from the J80 onwards, it's Toyota's lack of foresight to have a suitable offroad friendly spare tire location.

all the money youre spending making that thing /off road/ ready though could be used for gas in a rig that is actually designed for it. get a 3rd gen 4runner or something they are relatively cheap, good off road even stock and still get like 20mpg combined

To be honest most of the issues I've been having is user error, not the forester. I won't get stuck when I'm smart enough to put chains on first, though I'm new to the hobby and forget sometimes. That and the bottoming out which I want to fix with a lift kit.
>>
>>16908184
i was memeing. desu i like seeing subaraus out on the trials. nice seeing something other than jeeps and tacomas every once and a while.
that being said, be careful with lifting those, can lead to a lot of issues like the exploding cv joints that i said. in most cases you are much better off buying an actual 4x4 but if youre going to just stick to forest roads and that sort of thing the subie should suit you well.

Thank you for the advice, I fell in love with it this winter when my area got hit with a terrible (for us) snow storm that shut down the county but I was able to get around just fine even with snow coming up over my hood.
If you don't mind, what general gear would you keep on board for overlanding?
>>
>>16908210
of course man.
and thats cool to hear. as far as awd systems are concerned, the one you have in your forester is really solid.

most important is recovery gear. straps, d rings, rated recovery points, maybe a winch or traction boards, a shovel and an air compressor. then get a solid first aid kit and mostly everything else after that is just luxury. id suggest going on a few shortish trips and whatever sticks out to you the most should be your next upgrade. for example, if you slept like shit maybe its time for a sleeping platform build/rtt/whatever, if you couldnt see out in the woods maybe its time for lighting, kept getting stuck time for a winch or lockers or whatever you get the idea.

for me, i have to be comfortable while sleeping. if i dont get good sleep it ruins the whole trip for me.
>>
>>16908281

Hate to break it to you, but he's not wrong.

Usually I'd say the DIY guys should probably avoid trans swaps whenever possible but he was already planning on doing one. Personally I still wouldn't, auto is better for a 4x4 anyway.

Suburban's interior is better for camping/overlanding than an extended cab short bed truck is and accomplishes that in a shorter wheelbase. Not to mention the body on those F150s is fuckhuge.

F150/Ranger seeker back again. Thanks for all your opinions. For both, id get an extended cab 6ft bed.

Also, I live in Alabama, so the smaller truck would probably be better for me. I might be asking in the wrong place since im not looking for a high lifted suspension swapped trail technical runner..

I'm trying not to go too far back to where everything is completely spartan and old tech, but not too new to where I have a 5' grill and no ground clearance.

Budget is around ~$10-$12k, plus whatever I need to do involving a tranny swap if i need to/decide to go through with it. Any suggestions other than those two? No newer tacos though. They drive like a camry with a bed, with the interior to match. Not my thing.

I want to be able to take on anything id find innawoods, camping, hunting, fishing etc with reasonable effort.

96-99 2500 on the off chance you do decide to go with a Suburban. They're cheap as dirt so you could easily get an optioned out model in like new condition with low miles for half your budget.

96-99 has most of the features of the 00+ but with a simpler electronics system, a smaller body, and better low end power.

Ranger is a little bit smaller but a lot less power, generally a lot less creature comforts, and the backseat is about useless for anything other than the room to recline the front seats. They're usually about the same price for similar year and miles.

Obviously I'm seconding avoiding the 11th gen F150. 9th gen isn't much better. 12th gen and newer I can't comment on but given the past models I wouldn't have much hope for them and the body is still fuckhuge.

Kek. You don't need to go to the woods. I took a road trip out to Flint to buy parts for my LTD project and was mistaken for Flint PD by a sheriff deputy in my 20 year old burb that was once "blacked out", but now is faded and the truck now looks like ass.

You could get a great ranger for that price. Going from my dad's f-250 to my ranger, there's a lot to be said about having a half decent turning circle and not being as wide as a fullsize even in the city. The cab is not so big but as long as you're not in the back it's comfy. If you can find an FX4 unicorn even better.

Fuck I'm hungover. Sorry for laying a huge turd in this thread yesterday.

Anyway, >>16908884 is pretty correct that all modern pickup truccs after like 2007 have shitty reliability issues and are pretty annoying to fix. Along with being oversized and with collision restrictions allowing something like 9 inches maximum of clearance, F-150s, Silberadoodoos, and the autistic cummins aren't really good offroaders either.

I'm going to tell you this: if I didn't need to haul 200 litres of industrial solvents with a small trailer through fire trails and occasionally ATV paths, I don't think I would've ended up with Taynger. However, highway comfort and general reliability of the 4x4 Ranger platform made me choose my overpriced small trucc for work and fun. And boy has it been fun.

You will not lose out if you buy a Ranger (3.0L is shit and you'll have yourself, though) in 2.3L Lima or 4.0 OHV (pre 98) or if you have the money to buy a 2008+ SOHC 4.0 V6. But I would still highly encourage you to look into other options to join /ORG/ and other offroading technical paths. These ferds are harder to upgrade and there's almost no spacing in their hoods. They're great for highway but you should really have another vehicle for highway driving separate from the /ORG/ vehicle of your choosing (since you live in Alabama and not buttfuck Onterrible). Rangers come in Manual too, btw. And so do every single Jeep.
>>
>>16907221
Wow that 80 series expedition bumper is like they one I have on Taynger right now... but 40% more expensive :^(

I would love to have one of these since the wider spacing means measurement by error AND I get to step on them whenever I get stuck in mud (or during river crossings) to not get too muddy when I winch myself out.

in-board winch is great, too. this is what i would get my fab to do (and i think it's his stock option for winch bumpers) as whale.

What's up with those recovery points made with like weird shiny steel? Also, why are all winch bumpers black?
>>
>>16911102
>Also, why are all winch bumpers black?
Because it matches everything, it protects the bumper, and it's cheap. A few are chrome or polished aluminum but that's more expensive and the bare ones usually end up rattle canned.
>>
Are there any off decent off roaders that won't kill me gas mileage wise? I'd like to DD one.
>>
>>16911308
Taynger gets 15MPG city fuel economy with bad gearing on 32 inch tyres. She does, however, get 19 highway MPG.

For a 4.0 V6 from 2010, that's kinda pitiful. But it's considered pretty "good" for offroad vehicles.
>>
>>16911308
The Tacc gets about 19 highway and about 16 city with my mods, but stock they get about 23 highway and 19 city

Not back breaking, but not particularly comfortable either.
Okay off road, but nothing special, Small pickup classified as midsize due to drivetrain's limited capability. Usually found pretty cheap. Good option if you need a truck bed but don't plan to use it for anything heavy.

>Tacoma
Not back breaking, but not particularly comfortable either.
Okay off road, but nothing special, Small pickup classified as midsize due to drivetrain's limited capability. Usually the most expensive option by a large margin, without really giving you anything more. Axles will likely hold up to oversize tires slightly better than the ranger but at the cost of an increased risk of catastrophic ball joint failure.

>Suburban
Fairly comfortable and most examples are well equipped.
Okay off road, but nothing special, Long wheelbase variant of an SUV that is classed as fullsize due to it's drivetrain's capability and interior space even though exterior width and height are closer to a midsize. Usually found pretty cheap. Good option if you'd prefer versatility of cargo space and axles will hold up the best to oversize tires.

>>16911727
>Burb = Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Yukon probably from late 90s on a 6.5litre V8?
96-99 2500 4x4 5.7, both Suburban. Yukon is the short wheelbase GMC, same as Tahoe, and isn't available with the better axles and transmission.
It's fairly easy to squeeze 23mpg hwy out of a 6.5 diesel in good working order but they have their own issues and are best avoided by newcomers. For the advanced user these issues are easy to find and fix.

The cheaper the better. I don't really have a certain threshold.

I honestly don't like pickup trucks, so the suburban seems like the better choice even though I don't have a use for a full sized SUV in my daily routine. Does anyone here drive a Cherokee? That would be my car of choice, but I'm not sure how it performs on the points I mentioned.

>>
>>16912003
They're both around the $1500 mark most of the time.

Explorer is going to have a lot less aftermarket and and a ton of electronics issues, but will be at least a little bit more comfortable and more powerful if you get the V8. Neither is great on gas, especially considering their size and weight.

IMO spend the extra $500 and get a Suburban. They're far from perfect but the interiors are a lot better and they're reliable even when you beat the fuck out of them.
>>
>>16912005
No. That picture was the owner of the green XJ shooping taytay in for which I am forever grateful <33

Anyway, the reason I didn't bring up XJs int he first place was due to them not exactly being the best beginner vehicles when it comes to modding or some repairs (interiors and electronics) when you buy them for under $4000. Estimated gas mileage on the XJs are very good with like 21 MPG highway but once you actually get into modding them and loading them up, they start to fall. They come with stock 28s which are otay for most fire roads and other offroading but once you factor in lifts, tyre upgrades, and the regearing, they can get down to like 16, 13 highways. That's what I'd expect the green cherokee in the pic I posted to get, anyway. Haven't asked him that before.
I also wouldn't call them "DD" worthy due to the ride bumps...

V8 exploder would get my vote. or a two door tahoe, sure.

>>16912029
$1500 when you buy them as-is and after a few tune-ups and a year of owning, they'll end up costing a bit more (still under 3k, though)
>>
>>16912022
>Source?
Family members and friends have owned several due to the low entry price and features looking great on paper. All of them grew to hate them shortly after. Nearly every Explorer I've ever been in has had issues with the power door locks. Then you've got radios and sunroofs constantly shitting out... It's cheap stuff to fix with junkyard parts, but I just don't like spending my free time tearing apart a 15-20 year old interior to fix electronics issues that could have been avoided with a different vehicle in the same price range.

>Lol so what?
Fine if your friend is giving you a ride in one but it's not an interior you want to spend a lot of time in. All but the highest trim packages feel like lifeless base model lowest bidder fleet trucks and they're not exactly spacious.

Most Exploders are going to be NEARLY as bad as an XJ in terms of less than ideal seats and a cramped interior but have better road manners to help make up for it.
The higher trim package Exploders will definitely be better than the XJs for comfort all around, but still not as comfy as a Suburban, which is usually easier to find in higher trim levels.

Maybe the old carbed big blocks. My 97 Vortec 350 averaged 16 flying up the highway at 90mph and then driving around in heavy traffic in the mountains for a week full of tools and equipment.

I have no doubt I could have squeezed that to 18 or better mixed under better circumstances even with mine being a 3/4 ton 4x4. Makes me wonder if the EPA estimates were full throttle up a hill while at payload capacity.

kek. im sure youve sobered up by now, but here are a few links

slee shortbus front bumper: http://www.sleeoffroad.com/products/bumpers/sof_shortbus_bumper_detail.htm

slee off road rear bumper (aka the gold standard for rears imo): http://www.sleeoffroad.com/products/bumpers/sof_rear_80series_detail.htm

4x4 labs rear (best clearance and also the most popular currently. also its modular which is incredibly awesome): https://4x4labs.myshopify.com/collections/80-series-landcruiser/products/landcruiser-80-series-rear-bumper

BIOR rear (also modular which is awesome):http://www.bumpitoffroad.com/80-rear-bumper.html

Dobinsons front: https://www.dobinsonsprings.com/index.php/toyota-bull-bars

youve already seen the costa fab front bumper which is at the top for me, and of course the arb options. there are other options as well ironman, tjm, etc. which are all fine too im sure. 4x4 labs also has a front but it looks like absolute shit

because of these fucking treads I have decided I want an off road capable vehicle. my car is a 1994 Nissan hardbody pickup 2wd v6. An SAS 4x4 conversion would be about $600 from a junkyard, but Ive heard it will drive like shit, and this is my only car. So I've decided to just do everything I can do to make this thing off road ready with just 2wd. I grabbed some leaf springs from a Isuzu rodeo for the back and fucked with the torsion setup in the front to get 3" suspension lift. Last weekend I bought some passable shocks, an LSD for the rear end, and a welder to convert it to fit my truck. This week I'm going to be lifting the body up another 2" so I can fit some 29's. Is there anything I'm missing? Also I can fit 31's should I go for that instead? any suggestions as to brand and model? Keep in mind I want this thing to drive comfy on the road. Total cost so far (minus the welder because that's multi use) $280

That's mine.
Picture is from when I gave Tay Tay a lift to Death Valley.
6 inch lift, 33" tires & 4.88 gearing.
I get 16mpg running a steady 72-75 mph on long hauls. Probably about the same wheeling with tires aired down to 15psi.
It has the aerodynamics of a brick, but it's extremely capable on trail.

Its just some land for sale near my house. The front suspension. Is some gay ass setup that doesn't give me many options. If I would have gotten the 95 it would have had a proper double wish bone, making lifting it a breeze, but since its weird I had to go with the 3" ghetto lift that fucks my alignment and geometry all up. Since I have the welder I'm probably going to go completely custom up front eventually, maybe get a little prerunner going on.

I have a friend who'll be attempting a conversion soon, so my plan is to help him out, see how well he handles it, and use it as an opportunity to see what I'm getting myself into.

If I find that it's more than I can handle, I'll buy a different truck, but for now plan is to convert to 4x4.
>>
>>16914899
By all means I wish you good luck.
I know it's not the first time someone's mentioned you'd be better off selling yours and buying a factory equipped 4x4 in terms of expense, time and finished product.
But hey, I'll have a drink to your success.
I think Hardbody guy will get a nasty ongoing surprise when his bodged steering and suspension geometry setup to suit a "custom" SAS gives constantly gives him grief. I'd have a whole case for his success.

Just to clarify I'm not doing a 4x4 conversion. I merely stated that it is possible. Its not worth the effort. I just want something to bounce around and explore a little in. If you want to do serious offroading get an actual 4x4. Dumping money into offroading a 2wd will not add to its value as nobody wants that, but you can dump as much as you want into a 4x4 because its actually worth it. I will probably trade my truck in for a legit pathfinder, but I fully expect to eat the value of any mods I do to it (except the tires). Its more just a fun project to me and I really like my truck because its v6 kingcab.
