This. My uncle was a trucker for most of his life, even owning his own company for a bit. Truckers don't make that much. And considering you sit on your ass all day, it's horrible for your health.

Truckers have to justify their career because it's not respected, so they inflate their take home salary. Sure you can make $40-$50k. But so can someone fresh out of college. I think it's cool to ride with your dog and travel all over the US. But it's not a glorious high paying job.

The FACT is that the average trucker salary is $44k a year. And considering how long you are gone and can't have a personal life, it's not a glamorous job.

I have to wear one for dealing with the loading bay at work, since I don't exercise basic caution. Our warehouse drivers (and probably a few actual drivers who hold a CDL) manage to do that shit all the time. One of these rental Penskes, they did this shit to the truck within a week or two of us getting it, fleet replaced it, and they did it again within a month.

Shit sucks too because instead of teaching these people how tractor trailers work, they ordered a bunch of tractors with 40gal fuel tanks. I can't even make it more than 2 days without getting fuel in those trucks and I drive like 60-80mi per day.

Don't move around too much while in it so it doesn't shift/dig in worse, and stay away from the overhang side of the truck, especially the outside overhang, for obvious safety reasons.

Biggest thing is to take it slow, and keep your front end pointed where you want it to go, which will dictate where your trailer goes. Try to stay in the dead centre of the road if traffic load allows it.
Don't be too aggressive with your throttle or braking so you slide or kick the drives outward.

A little trick I do if the front end starts to plow while turning, or isn't going the way you want it to while in mud or sand going slowly is turning the wheel a half to a full rotation in the opposite direction and blipping the throttle as opposed to constant throttle, and it will help force it back in the direction you want it to go, or at least the opposite direction so you can keep doing back and forth corrections to keep yourself on track.

Also where is orientation? For us they do orientation on a Monday and then Tuesday you hop on the truck with somebody. Then around 4 weeks riding along with somebody training. Hopefully you end up with somebody good because at my plant they like to use new guys as helpers and just toss them with whatever driver has a shitty route and they never get trained right.

But anyway just stick with it if you don't absolutely hate it. I started in the beginning of April and ran with another dude for 4 weeks so by May the volume was picking up like crazy and I got thrown right on a full route. There were some long days but after a month or two of running your own route, you will figure it out.

Plus it's about working smart, not hard. Dude who trained me taught me that one. Some of these other dudes are running like crazy and all impatient and I still come in an hour later than them and leave at about the same time, and don't half ass nearly as much stuff.

On roads like that its the trailer in the ditch, you usually can just keep it drifting along like that until it bites again and follows the truck. I've had to hand-deliver twice that much, though, because we deliver to someone's kitchen because Customer Service, and old people.
Carrying 20kg trays over a gravel drive, through a couple of doorways, and limboing under solid oak beams holding the rest of the building up, stacking them against a wall, then going back for another. The building is like twice as old as America, so it wasn't considered that people would grow to over 6' tall, or that it would still be standing in a few centuries.
And they want deliveries like that 2-3 times a week, because they host 50+ kids at a time for a week to teach them about history.

Or taking three trips with the truck to wheel it all the way into an office building, through narrow doorways, unpack the trays onto the table, and then all the way back out for the next load.

Yeah I have those fucked up deliveries too where it is narrow and you can't stack stuff very wide. When that happens, I stack it big just to get it close and then take smaller trips. And going into office buildings and shit is a pain. When I do Ft Lauderdale Beach, I have a bunch of big hotels and I will try to just get a big cart that I can get everything on. Sometimes I will stack it really tall on the lay-down handtruck and wrap it with plastic wrap so I don't have to take a million trips.
