Is that mini V twin looking thing a belt driven air compressor?
>>
>>16847367
Given that it's got a pressure release valve on the manifold linking to two cylinders, I'd say so.
Custom on board air compressor setups are common on Landcruisers in Aus, although they're usually made from an old air conditioning compressor.

The snow's melted in the crawling place in mid-Onterrible. I might have a contract up there and might need to drag a few litres of berry solvent so I'll see what the offroad conditions on the guy's farm is. Last time the storage area was a downslope that was accessible either from an ATV trail or from the backroads (so guess which one I took to his storage).

Anyway, if it's just soft dirt, it'll be cushioned well enough from the packing snow. If that's the case, I'll try and get some Taynger rock climbing pictures and see how much breakover angle she has.

Fair, but judging by the recent shit jeep has produced besides the wrangler, I don't know if you could call their market "dedicated" anymore.

Pic related. It might could handle stuff like the RAV4, which IMO is just a crossover, and only flirts with ofrroading
>>
>>16848495
Oh lmao. You weren't here when the renegadefag spanned 3-5 /org/s posting pictures of built Jeep Renegades and saying they were offroad worthy. I was almost certain he was trolling but you can never be too sure anymore.

Anyway, the wrangler sells because icon and how a lot of people still like squarebodies. Too bad they're all driven by 40+ year old minority mothers who get scared and confused if you even attempt a jeep wave.

Anyway, the Rubicons are still pretty trail-capable whilst stock and aren't too much of a tweak to fit in 35+ tyres. Though, with the price of the modern ones, it makes no sense to do so... I still laugh every time a Wrangler has the "Trail rated" badge on the side. It's like they forgot the years where "Jeep" was synonymous with "trail" and now they have to put a badge on them to let people know they're still capable of hitting trails.

I'd like to say Warn winches are the best bet, but honestly the current Chinese eBay winches are quite proven these days. Warn still offer the best after sales support and replacement consumables. If it was me, I'd buy a secondhand Warn and rebuild it.

Never owned Suzuki, but Monteros are a bit of a sleeper. Almost like an indirect Toyota competitor that falls somewhere between Lanscruiser and Prado in size. Big drivetrain (relative to their size Mr Burbalade Shitlord) that's similar size to the J80 crown wheel with an 8" diff up front and a 31 spline 9.5" up the back. Their V6 isn't anywhere near as hardy as the Toyota 4.5 six, but it's revvier and more playful which is handy in the dunes. Honestly though I wouldn't go past the light industrial 4M4x diesel if talking about Mitsus. They have a torsion bar front though... :P
>>
>>16848900
I'll also note, in terms of sixes I still prefer the Toyota 1FZ or Jeep 4.0HO in terms of an offroad power plant (if talking gas) compared to the Mitsubishi 6G74 V6.

Absolutely annihilated the left wheel bearing on Big Red last week. Opened the old dog up in the shop last night and found out that both my front and rear sprockets are also way overdue for replacing, the chain has worn itself so far forward that the sprocket teeth are catching and grinding on the links. Replacing the rear sprocket is no big deal but to get at the front sprocket I have to remove most of the sub-transmission, lame.

I just drove across BC to Jasper, AB last weekend, plenty of snow left across most of the province, but it has left the Fraser Valley where I live, so no more frozen pond drifting for Big Red this year. I'd blame the wheel bearing failure more on age more than anything, this thing is 35 years old and I have no idea when the bearings were last replaced, but I'd guess it has been a very long time. Mud, sand, and shit works it's way through the chain guard and brake drum into the bearings, through the seals, and eventually eats the bearings away until they're small enough to shoot out. Once the bearings fall out it's game over and the axle grinds the race into a mangled mess. As for the sprockets, also age, but I have to take a bit of blame myself, I didn't lube the chain once all winter and rode the shit out of the thing, probably sped up the wear significantly. Learnt my lesson, the burden of taking apart the subtrans should be enough to remind me to lube up more often in the future.

For those here who do "serious" offroad; do you guys use your DD's, or do you have cars dedicated specifically to offroading?

Well, offroading here is pretty much illegal outside of a very few designated areas that are open only for events that last a few days each, a few times a year

I'd hate to go there, have fun, do something retarded like shredding the absolute shit out of my diff, crack the prop shaft or something similar, and end up being stuck with no working vehicle

And I also feel like a dedicated offroad rig allows you to go a few more degrees crazy with both the driving and the modding
>>
>>16851391
yeah you definitely have a very different situation than us in the US.
if i could only go off road a few times per year then id probably just rent one of those buggy things or something. otherwise yeah i guess a dedicated off road rig would make sense if you were rich. kind of hard to justify though since youre only using it a few times per year

How helpful is the community over there?

There is a dedicated ORV area about an hour and a half from where I live. If anyone gets stuck, others in the area are quick to help out getting you out.

Back when I had my YJ, I took it up there. The radiator ended up breaking away from the mount and committed suicide straight into the radiator fan. I was towed from the park to the staging area by a stranger. Random people in the staging area helped me out by lending tools and giving moral support. When it turned out the radiator wasn't salvageable, another complete stranger drove me back home while the park rangers kept watch over my Jeep (overnight parking there isn't normally allowed).

I bring up my story because in your situation, where you can only off road a few days per year in select places, it would probably bring out people that are more than capable of helping out someone in distress. Would the people there rally together to help out there like they did for me?

I got some seriously rusted screws/bolts that need to come off. Has anyone used PB Blaster?
Is it as good as everyone says?
>>
>>16852893
pb blaster is really good. make sure you spray the fuck out of it then let it rest for 15 minutes before you do anything.
with some really fucked bolts ive just sprayed it every day for like a week straight then gotten it off with a cheater pipe
>>
>>16852893
What >>16852906 said. PB blaster works wonders IF you let it sit for a little while. If you give it some time to penetrate the threads then it's a life saver on older, somewhat rusted bolts

Did my first bit of wheeling with my grabber at2s on some power line trails while on vacation in rural KY. Stockish height e-locked 3rd gen 4runner. Did fantastic, wasn't really traction constrained anyways but in a few spots where I would have struggled with all seasons these things just dug in. A few technical spots that tested articulation and approach/departure angle, ended up scraping my hitch cover off on one sharply angled ditch crossing. Another rutted spot where I just about got crossed up but didn't need to engage the locker, just a bit of wheel spin.

I drive muh trucc 100-300km and then offroad at the destination. Sometimes for work, othertimes because there are multiple trails nearby. Most of the time for both. Sometimes I like to take backroads to get there but other times I'm too busy to turn a 3 hour trip into 9 hours so I have to take the highway.
32 inch tyres running 16MPG non-loaded.

Define "serious". I considered lockers but it's just so impractical for the amount of highway driving I do. If your DD is under 10k, you can have some leeway in abusing it. The occasional broken window or fender scratch is just part of the offroading lottery.

>>16854890
Keep in mind that almost every chinese winch is variation of same basic winch that is known under "electric winch" brand in China.
Smittybilt is great choice too, but as far as i know they come close to warn in terms of price.

Chinese winches are... fine... if you understand what you are getting. Even if seller tells you otherwise it's always a good idea to disassemble new winch and lube it properly, check seals, add sealant if needed. They won't last long if you plan to use them OFTEN, like many times during every time you go wheeling. But they will be good choice if you are not planning to get stuck at all but rather want to feel confident that if it will happen you will be prepared.
>>
>>16853946
Beats doing the same in 2wd shitbox.

Sambar is rather well designed vehicle, engine in the back gives it decent grip on rear axle.
Not sure about your sambar, but one i drove had 4wd, power windows, a/c and airbag. But yes, your back won't be happy it wither way. They just were not built for long highway runs.
>>
>>16855030
Absolutely agree. Pull most of the Generic 9000lb or 12000lb Chinese winches down, and they're identical. I guess there's not too much variation on triple stage planetary winches these days.
As I said earlier that I personally would prefer to buy a second hand Warn and rebuild, knowing I had parts and service backup that'd make the unit last a lifetime and having something that'd handle a higher duty cycle (not that I'd come close to it, I might be lucky/unlucky enough to need it once on a journey).

My fab had a theory that all recreational winches come from the exact same factory in China. They're one of the ONLY things in the world with a standardised bolt shape and measurement.

Plus that three gear planetary / disconnect option is just too similar across all "brands". There could just be a conveyor belt with different accessories, casings, wires, etc upgrades that drives pricing up from $150 to $1000. Then they can retail them for up to $4000 for some raisin.

That being said, my shitty winch has been getting me up harder to climb hills pretty well. All the accessories are absolute garbage and I'm thinking of just soldering in the winch connexions since they've disconnected by accident before. But other than that, it's been used in the hard winter 50+ times without issue in the past 3 months. I've even accidentally snapped the hook onto my bumper at close range before.

I need some advice. I have an 07 FJC that just received a new remanufactured tranny. I purchased this FJ in SLC in 2012. Utah salts the shit out of there roads so there is some rust underneath, but the original owner seemed to have done a pretty good job at cleaning the undercarriage.

Upon driving it back home 200+ miles I noticed an exhaust smell. I though it might have been the semis exhaust I was smelling. Well it wasn't. It was definitely my exhaust. I also noticed the sound of the exhaust leaking. So I took it to a muffler shop as the bolts were rusted solid. They got the bolts tightened down and they welded the connections together. Drove it and the smell is still there. It's not as strong and the exhaust leak sound is not as prominent.

Any ideas? Sorry for the shitty structure. I'm super unsettled.
>>
>>16857793
cat. converter maybe. can you smell the NOx gases? or is it like a dark sludge kinda smell?
>>
>>16857894
It's more of a basic exhaust odor. I thought about the cats, but the exhaust from the tail smells spot on. If it's the cats, wouldn't it smell like rotten eggs?
>>
>>16857929
BUT it does smell a little different than the tailpipe exhaust.
>>
>>16857929
NOx has a hard, pungent smell. I deal with nitric acid occasionally and smell it in moderate doses. It's really hard to describe odours but I'll try:
Sharp, pungent, acrid, like a more sour acetone. NOx is hard to miss and I wish I could teleport some over to you right now so you get a waff of the cat's tail.

It smells nothing like an air-chocked fireplace/ campfire which could be another issue. Does it kinda remind you of a diesel coal-rolling kinda smell or more of a chemically smell?
>>
>>16857963
Closer to coal rolling. I originally thought it was the semis exhaust.
>>
>>16855430
Too heavy in my opinion. Otherwise they're the single best competition winch chassis ever made. Incredibly modular with lots of aftermarket customisation potential.
>>

>>

Well - it is rather uncommon for a 2007 yot but that's a potential.

Lockers on the LX are standard, btw. Rear locker is not locking but the computer is registering it - i thought it could just be a solenoid replacement and he said the same thing.

A/C condenser needs to be replaced, too so that's like $300. What's that on the LCs?

The huge thing pushing me to get this LX is that he has 10 years of service records from his one mechanic that did all the jobs save a few oil changes he did himself or at an oil changer for like $30 because it was too cold outside.

>>
>>16858405
What cast iron ones are you seeing? Most factory covers are thin stamped sheet metal. Most aftermarket are at least 3/16 steel plate or cast iron and are $80-120.

Where are you going to get enough titanium to plate an axle for that much?
>>
>>16858520
Ranger covers are like $80 from amazon/ebay when this aluminium one is $240 when the cast iron ones are like 180-200. why do you even need the rear diff. cover to be sturdy? When are you ever reversing into rocks often enough for this to be an issue?
https://www.amazon.ca/Proform-69501-Aluminum-Differential-Stabilizer/dp/B005AUAOLU/ref=au_as_r?_encoding=UTF8&Make=Ford%7C54&Model=Ranger%7C696&Year=2010%7C2010&ie=UTF8&n=6948389011&newVehicle=1&s=automotive&vehicleId=1&vehicleType=automotive

I also just have a huge sheet of titanium lying around and steelworkers won't touch it because it's difficult to work with. I also get lowballed offers when I try to sell it so it's just sitting around doing nothing.
>>
>>16858544
Aluminum covers are for heat dissipation, not protection.

Look for ones made with steel plate if you're wheeling and want it cheap. Being small, you might be able to get a weld it yourself kit to build one for $50ish.

Fuck that makes sense now. Geez, I get more retarded by the day.

Is it worth just literally attaching a flat plate the the bottom of the differential that doesn't even protrude much from the ground? These diff. covers I can find online are all over $300 due to the custom made tax. I have an oxy acetylene supply at work so I'll be able to use that to probably make some strong connexions. I'll just get the $80 standard steel cover and use a street sign diff guard reinforced with titanium or something like the hicks do around here.

>>16858574
Ah that makes a lot more sense. Just misread the "took it home today" part. Yeah seems like a mech issue. Sorry anon.
>>
>>16858438
have you seen it yet?
judging by what you are saying if it is actually relatively rust free you definitely need to buy that truck my man. oem lockers are worth their weight in gold these days. the locker rebuild is not that bad to do and i would bet you dont even need to do that. a lot of the time they just need to be "exercised" just go find a dirt road, and do a bunch of forward/reverse figure 8s. id be willing to bet it locks up.

honestly im not sure what the a/c condenser runs, i wouldnt be worried about that at all though desu.

service records are the most important thing there is man this thing just sounds better and better.

check typical problem areas as well:
phh
head gasket (if it hasnt been replaced yet at that mileage you will absolutely have to do it)
it will guaranteed need a knuckle rebuild but that is a pretty simple diy job
etc.

let me know if you have any questions but judigng by what you are saying i would probably buy that truck.
>>
>>16858591

>>
>>16858601
trucc me, baby.
inspected head gaskets - no surface rust so unless he autistically flipped them upside down to show them to me, they should be fine. a/c could just be a $300 at his mechanic which i might take him up on doing since that shit's hard to get into. solenoid i should be able to repair myself.

The steeringwheel squeeks a bit when turning. A full left to right turn has around 4 squeaks but i'm sure i can spray some WD-40 somewhere or everywhere to fix it. The turning is really weird since you turn the steering 50% to go like 10 degrees and the remaining 35 degrees are turned from the rest of the 50%. It'll take some getting used to so that's just what was included in the "TLC". acceleration is really strong on these lexuses. they don't limp like the yotas i've driven which is pretty odd. brakes have a weird braking in point but he has service records of new calipers, pads, and E-brake from last year.

The 10 year service record is honestly the best part of this entire deal. He was second or third owner and has dealt with all the gremlins for the past 10 years and never really took it offroading or workhorsing (plowing, towing, etc). Sides, what is the towing capacity on the suspension? Can it be upgraded if I get the V8 swap or does the suspension only hold 6000~ lbs?

not even any surface rust? god damn man that is incredible. if the hg has been done already you are set. if it is the original one it will most likely need to be done very soon even if it looks fine.
who cares about steering wheel squeaks lmao. but yes i feel you on the turning it is deliberate and something that takes getting used to.
as for the acceleration, if you are comparing it to other toyota land cruisers it should be the exact same. the motor, transmission, drivetrain and everything are exactly identical. if you mean other old toyotas than yeah its lot different. the old 22r putters were total dogs (not that 80s are fast but comparatively its like a racecar.)
im sure they brakes are fine, even if theyre not its an easy job.

and youre exactly right about the service records that is so amazing to have. is there an hg service in there?

is the suspension stock? i thought i remember you saying it has an ome lift, maybe i made that up. either way it should be fine with 6k lbs but i would be very wary and go slow, that is not something i would want to do regularly. not only bc of the suspension but bc of the fairly sluggish motor.

all you can eat shrimp me up bls. i got kicked out in college bc i wouldnt stop ordering. to this day that is one of my greatest achievements.

Ah the 60 is armour, isn't it? So I have to get the cover by itself already? The 140 is nice but after shipping of $70 and conversion, it comes to around $240USD after the "FACEBOOK" discount code of 10% off. That just puts me to exactly where I was before ):

Thanks anon. I really appreciate the help, though. I'm going to bookmark this when I'm not belligerently drunk.

>>16858756
Well some mild surface rust but i couldn't even pick it off with my nail. So it was alright. What hg work do I have to do? Aw. But baes been lambasting me about muh Ranger ride quality. The squeaks would probably annoy her. Aw.

Yeah I was considering acceleration on the 60s to the 80s. They actually have a decent kick in first gear that I'll have to get used to and not waste gas even harder. Brakes are always an easy job compared to offroad gremlin wiring, mudding gremlins, and anything to do with gears whatsoever. (as you probably know)

Suspension has 3 inch emus and he's running KO2s right now on them. I might just switch out the KO2s and put them on Taynger and put the Duratracs on the Lexus if I get it (looking more and more likely now). The KO2s + shocks themselves are worth $1500- $2000 new so yeah.
Rust along side the rock guards (or whatever the ones attached to the body are called) but I think those are easy to replace? I could literally just grind them off in the spring and weld some additional metals under them or something.

I'm just afraid what this vehicle will run me later down the line with rear and front bumpers with winch and lights. Fuck me up. Another $3000 in the hole?

How the hell did eating shrimp get you cucked out of college? literally why. Fucking tublords.

No the one for $60 is a cover, you just have to weld it together yourself.

gotcha yeah who cares about surface rust though
as for the hg, it is the 80s achilles heel. the 1fz has an iron block and an aluminum head which expand and contract at different rates which causes strain on the head gasket. typically it needs to be done every 200k miles or so, sans that the engine is pretty bulletproof though.

drive down here and we can do ours together, mines going strong right now but its something ill need to tackle within a few years. here's a thread on it: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/head-gasket-thread-for-the-faq.71980/

i feel like its something just outside of my skill level but im willing to attempt it.

if you are planning on getting front/rear bumpers then yes it will likely be another $3k. these trucks are world class in durability but even the cheap ones aren't really cheap.

also i worded that poorly haha, i didnt mean i got kicked out of college for eating too many shrimp, i meant while i was attending college i got kicked out of the red lobster for ordering too many bottomless shrimp

What if the surface rust mixes with the aluminium head and makes thermite and blows up my engine?

Anyway, that's really good to know. Do people switch out the heads or are there no aftermarket demands to justify the meticulous mating for these old engines? Are the FZs still being produced now? Maybe worth the trip if you can get a 2 for 1 deal on head.
>UZ SWAP WHEN
>after the regearing :^)

I'll see what my Fab can make in terms of the bumper. Base price should be around $1000 for the front again and I might try my hand at electroplating titanium or copper onto a bare steel bumper before painting it instead. Might be super worth.
He also has a trailer hitch bolted into the frame which means I have a rear recovery point so no aftermarket rear bumper for a while.

Ask GG-Deuce for shrimp. She has a shrimping company like that autist in Forest Gump.

Honestly, I wouldn't touch that cylinder head if it's not giving you any grief. Unless you overheat that motor there's no reason for that head gasket to fail, and should last the life of the motor. You'll probably find you'll create more problems by unessesarily pulling it apart.
If it overheats however, you'd have a snow flake's chance in hell being (as you mentioned) an iron block/alloy head.
>>
>>16864867
how do you overheat the motor on a land cruiser barring coolant issues?
>>
>>16864934
Barring cooling issues, how do you overheat anything?
>>
>>16864934
Simply put, you don't. Only really cooling component failure can cause this, which due to the nature of the vehicle can happen.
I'd just avoid using no name eBay components like waterpumps, radiators and the like, replace components at the first sight of aging.

On a semi related note, I had an acquaintance with a turbo diesel Montero who replaced the water pump with good intentions. Although the cheap cheerful pump he fitted ended up failing a bearing seal and 2 weeks later, within 15 minutes into a journey it had thrown a few litres of coolant out through the pump snout running the head out of coolant while under load and boost... The melted material between the valves was cringe worthy.

Interesting read on post asbestos headgasket material though, there may be some merit in changing a HG as a precautionary measure.

I think that's a pretty good move. There's not much point in tearing down an otherwise functional engine when there's a lot of potential to stuff it up reassembling.

Really is a shame it was never a factory offering in the J80. Although I'd look at turbocharger the 1FZ personally :P
Other neat diesel swaps I've seen/heard of (apart from the factory offered 1HD which is a godly motor) are Mitsubishi 4D34, Isuzu 4BD2 and the 6.2 and 6.5 Chevrolet diesel which is common as muck in Ausfagland.

My old 2wd Colorado (do not cry) used to oberheat if I brought it over 150 on the highway for more than 10 minutes. I'd have to either bring it down to 120 for 10 minutes or just idle on the side of the highway for like 2 and the gauge would fall back down.

Yeah she has a shrimping company. Pic related.

Know what would've felt better than regearing? UZ swap

Know what's better than all you can eat shrimp? Buying your own from G-Deuce's shrimping adventures.

Don't you already have a bumper though? I'll let you know what my fab quotes me but because he literally makes them from bare steel, all of the bumpers he warps are roughly the same price. Though, I would probably want some rock guards for the lights and that could push the price up +300 or +500. Keep in mind this is in canuck dollars which means you get an automatic 25% discount.

Also overheating on a steep angle is a common issue, too. I forgot about that.

I'm picking up a mint 2008 gx 470 with like 80k, so basically a Prado 120/4th gen 4runner? with more leather. Sometimes they are cheaper than the 4runner with equivalent mileage/drivetrain which is weird. Doesn't have that 4runner/Taco Tax. Gonna turn it into my wood grain warrior, overlander. I sat in one before and that shit was comfy ass fuck. Gonna be my ride from Tejas to Alaska/Canada. I hear the 4.7 is Toyota reliable, not the best, but good. Way better than my 3.Slow in my 94' 4runner. Thinking OME 2.5'' lift some ARB metal front and rear and the wheels/tires/sliders/9k winch from my 4runner which I'm donating for parts to my buddy and offroad partner.

What do you guys think about them? Prado or GX. Just looking for a second opinion before I shoot.

>>
>>16866021
Tow rating is tow rating regardless of whether or not the trailer has brakes.

AWD if anything hurts tow rating. You're not expected to rev it to the moon for boosted launches to get a trailer moving.
>>
>>16866015
>mint
did you check for repaint and can you scratch off the wax? 80k and 2008 shouldn't be an issue (especially in TeXXXas) but better to be sure than anything else.

GXs are built off the Land Cruiser platform that were never offered in the US. Not 4runner as far as I know so you're getting a good dealio. The only difference is the leather, upgraded suspension, and body with a lot more annoying curves.

If you think they're comfortable now, wait until you put on the old man emus or bilstein shocks on them. I would recommend bilstein more because I have more experience with them and their anti-rust properties over the ARB owned OMEs. others say there's literally no difference and i would trust that, too.

What Prado are you looking at?

>>16866052
Torque split? Or is that not really relevant because the thing your towing literally has 0% of the shares?

More curb weight due to AWD system with the same GCWR = lower tow rating

The only time AWD could help is traction limited launches which as far as the NHTSA is concerned, you should not be doing to begin with, especially with a trailer.

The issue isn't so much getting the trailer up to speed as it is stopping it, controlling it, and your drivetrain not failing under the strain. While trailer weight distribution is probably the single largest factor in control, tow vehicle weight and wheelbase are close behind.
If I had to guess the limiting factor for a Land Cruiser, it's probably brakes with pretty much everything else not too much further behind that.

yeah let me know what he quotes you, the only thing im against is full tube bumpers. they just look like straight up ass to me.

>Also overheating on a steep angle is a common issue, too. I forgot about that.
im definitely overblowing most of the "issues" with these trucks too, i just want you to know what youre getting into. they are pretty much bulletproof unless you are a total retard for the most part. that said, they do require more maintenance than a lot of trucks but if you keep up with it, theres no reason you wont get upwards of 400k out of it.

an increase in hp would definitely help but thats not necessarily the determining factor. the stock suspension was built to handle 5000lbs iirc but you have ome on yours so i wouldnt worry about that.

well we can argue about reliability all day and night but that is something to consider. (not insinuating ls motors arent reliable btw just that i think the 1uz is more reliable.)
that aside, personally i like a more oem feel. ive driven an ls swapped cruiser before and while it was awesome it just didnt feel like a cruiser to me. in addition to that a 1uz swap just looks a lot cleaner. ls swaps usually look like a swap while the 1uz looks like it came from the factory like that.

If it was like $1000USD, you wanna give me $250 to drive down there, big boy? Or are you cumming up?

Alright... that's good to know. I probably wouldn't be towing an RV with it or anything but might tow Taynger around (or vice versa since she has a stupid 2500kg of towing capacity, too) on a dolly with e-brakes if need be.

I know a guy who used his 4.0SOHC to tow a 1500lb trailer and a camaro 1000km one time. He had to do 3rd gear on the highway but it was done without "much" issue.

Same platform as those 2nd (or 3rd - can't be bothered to google it. pre-2006 at least) generation frontiers before they became overpriced shite.

So pretty damn good. They were probably one of the last dying breaths of Nissan before they became fully utility / appliance vehicles with AWD/FWD options. They look weird but in SUV format, they can be pretty good.

Also look into frontiers if you don't need the extra seats.
>>
>>16865964
Those tow capacities are more to zdo with what the manufacturer at the time puts forward to be complied which have a number of things taken into consideration. Your car will probably comfortably tow sustainably more that it's been factory rated to.
If you want to increase that tow capacity, chances are you'd have to talk to and appease an automotive engineer and have him/her sign off on a mod plate (or however it works in your region).
Worth noting in other regions where the early J80 was rated for 2.5 tonne, the later ones were rated for 3.5 tonne.

Awesome car, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. While you guys may not have got the Toyota badged Prado, the rest of the world missed out on any variation of V8 Prado, so I am well and truly jelly.

So my prospective 97 Lexus Land Battleship will be able to tow 7700 lbs? I haven't looked too much into it so far as that will come with the owner's manual.
But generally from military experience, I have found that the vehicle is built (except for brakes and maybe transmission) to tow a lot more as you mentioned. On civies, it probably won't be able to tow like 10x more like some military medium support vehicles but definitely half a tonne over probably won't kill it.

>be HLVW
>tow capacity of 15tonnes
>has had stories of it pulling two HLVW and a MLVW going 20km/h
>around 50 tonnes
>exceeds tow rating by 3.5x to prevent vehicles going into hands of taliboons
I wonder what my Ranger can do...

>>16866513
>the even have adapters to bolt the LS to the stock transmission
That I actually don't know. I was speaking more from looking at I-6s and potential V8s into my old Colorado (not suer if LS was an option) vs putting them into other trucks and saw it was quite difficult.
>>
>>16866524
Also worth noting, a lot of OEM towing capacities (especially with the plethora of 3.5t vehicles out there today) eat into the overall GCM and limit your legal ability to reach the GVM if you weren't otherwise towing.
>>16866124 touches on it quite well.

Remember to take Gross Vehicle and Gross Combination into account, along with axle loadings. You'd probably find with such 2.5+ tonne trailers, you'd only be allowed around 200kg tongue weight, so trailer ballance is important too.

If it's species similarly to global versions of the J80, sure, it'd be physically able to.
From a legality and insurance perspective though, ONLY if it's been registered to do so in your region...
And you're right, vehicles are usually engineered over their legal threshold.

>So my prospective 97 Lexus Land Battleship will be able to tow 7700 lbs
Legally it will tow 5000 lbs.
>>
>>16866625
Yeah I remember it was 5000lbs on the site which is why I asked >>16866585 to confirm the 7700lbs. That "legal" limit now makes sense why all the forums I saw a few days ago said 5k. Good to know I can probably tow some sort of trailer legally as long as I give some mech. eng. $100.
Can't wait for the 10 city MPG to turn into 4MPG.

Un-irregardless, 5k's enough to tow Taynger (3700 curb weight + 700lb dolly). And Taynger should be able to tow Land Battleswift (4900lb curb weight + 700lb dolly) both within the legal limits.

I currently have an 07 F150 Crew Cab 4x4 with a 1.5" level kit and some Duratracs. I wanted to add an Automatic Locker/LSD to the rear. What are my best options for a daily? I've tried a Detroit locker on a Jeep and didn't like it.

I was looking for something like GM G80 Automatic Rear Locker like they have on the GM pickups/SUVs, but something I can put in my Ford.
>>
>>16866681
thanks bae

>>16866711
does 1.5 inch leveling do the f-150 justice? Did you just disk the coils? Duratrac size? why do you need lockers on the f-150 crew cab right now? I feel the money could be spent a bit better on an extra 2-3 inches and larger tyres before lockers come into play but it really depends on the uses of your vehicle in both daily applications and ((((((funn)))))))
>>
>>16866726
I don't recall the tire size. Its a work truck and I mostly drive in Mud off road. I've gotten stuck multiple times and 4wd would help. My co-worker has an 05 Power Wagon and always pulls me out. He just uses his rear locker +4wd and is able to pull through no problem.
>>
>>16866755
But you have a 4x4 which means you have a 4wd-l. lockers will definitely help a bit more than tyre size, then, yeah.

but honestly, if the way detroit lockers didn't make you feel well, then anything less will be the same on the f-series. What did you not like about the detroit lockers? The weird turning and curbing? What about air lockers?
>>
>>16866711
Limited options for the 9.75"
Just put a Detroit in the rear. They work better with longer wheelbases which is likely why you didn't like it in the Jeep.
>>
>>16866796
Don't think I can afford Air/Selectable lockers.

Is there any lockers that normally stay open and then lock up at RPM like the G80?

I might sell it and buy a GMC with a G80 then. I have no brand loyalty.
>>
>>16866843
Honestly the GMC is the better truck by a wide margin but the G80 rear end is a bit of a weak point, especially in a 1500. It'll get you out of a pinch but the way it operates is not conducive to regular reliable use. If nothing else the GM rear axle has a wider variety of aftermarket lockers available. If you get a 3/4 ton there's front lockers available as well.

Having six fog lights does not benefit you over two fog lights. Fog lights are generally short range and for road use.

However having two driving lights and two spot lights on your light bar in addition to two fog lights on your bumper can be extremely beneficial.

You have the fog lights for fog, snow, heavy rain, etc. while you have the roof lights for offroad use as well as the ability to supplement the high beams with them.
>>
>>16877016
Why do you have four foglights, then?
>>
>>16877083

I have two fog lights on my bumper and two spot lights to supplement my high beams.

For off road use I have three driving and two cornering lights on my roof basket.

I have a second gen. Performance is good off-road. Off Road model is obviously the best with locker stock. RF sound system is pretty nice too. Can coax decent mileage out of them (20 consistently on hwy). Good amount of room inside too.

Downsides/things to watch for:
-SMOD with early automatics. I avoided it by getting a 6spd. Timing chain guides can wear out.
-Rear leaf springs are underfed for a 1/4 ton SUV. If you're towing or the springs are older they sag like a mother.
-Lots of tiny electrical gremlins like the airbag light likes to come on for no reason. Evap tank likes to get clogged. Amp on stereo likes to not boot up for no reason at all. Wheels use a stupid bolt pattern.

They cost 66% of what similar specced 4Runner runs. They're everywhere so it shouldn't be hard to find one that's taken care of.
>>
>>16877108
yeah that makes a lot of sense
what about those brojeeps that run their 6 "fog lights" on the highway at night when there's no fog or anything? are those just to look douch?
>>
>>16877288

No fog, rain, or snow? Around other traffic? Definitely to look douche. Fog lights are useless in clear conditions and no other pattern should be used to supplement low beams.

>>
>>16877422
That's alright, as long as there's people out there "upgrading" to light bars from their old brand name spot lights, I'm a happy man. I'd prefer to be running a pair of Hella Rallye 4000 (just for example) halogens than a generic 32" LED light bar anyway. Not only I like the aesthetics and character of a spotlight housing (subjective, the minimalist appearance of a light bar has advantages), I prefer the light produced by a halogen, maybe an HID as long as it's not any higher than 4300k.
Worth noting such Hella 4000s still retail for over $250 Ausfag bucks each (that's per one light!), but I've found a couple of pairs in otherwise good condition for $150.
Best driving lights I've ever used were 240 Lightforces.

I'm 297 freedom bucks into six Hella 4000s and $65ish into a 54" curved LED bar. Best of both worlds.

Swapping the Hellas 5500k HIDs but the color temp will drop significantly with the 75w ballasts I'm planning on running.
>>
>>16878404
>but the color temp will drop significantly with the 75w ballasts I'm planning on running
...interesting, running lower wattage globes? Does this aid strike times?
>>
>>16878487

The globes/bulbs in nearly all of the 50w+ kits are just standard bulbs designed for a 35w ballast. The advertised color temp is at 35w since that's what the bulbs are intended to be run at. Higher wattage ballasts drop the color temp and increase output.
>>
>>16878562
dropping colour temperature will allow for lesser pierce of water molecules. you want something that can touch on the IR region. but as we're discussing on the new /ORG/, there is limited use depending on where you live for moisture piercing light, most of the time.

unless you're somewhere in the north east and you have the 2am lake fog that if you turnedon high beams, LEDs, or driving lights, the only thing you would see is a huge block of white in front of you
>>
>>16878686

Increasing color temp reduces "penetration", dropping color temp helps.
>>
>>16878724
Are we talking about the same thing when you say "penetration"?
Water molecule have absorbances near the 400nm range which means you need something with a spectrum range of 550-750 (red and yellow light) for fog piercing. This is why LEDs (blue shifted lights) drop off in fog and only spray like 10-25 metres before being useless.
>>
>>16878781

Yes. Lower color temperatures (amber/yellow) help while higher color temperatures (blue) hurt.
