First for BEST BEGINNER BIKE
>>16757149
kys it's shit
>>16757149
But what if the beginner wants something reliable Anon?
Feels good man.
The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.

>>16757482
>Yeah no, I want to be able to ride with it after all

>>16757464
Didn't see the second question at first. I have a big pillion seat bag from them (https://m.louis.de/artikel/moto-detail-gepaecksystem-universal/10026555), you can fit a lot in there and they seem waterproof enough but I basically never use it.
>small opening so can't fit big laptop, or any tent or sleeping bag in there
>possibly difficult to fasten to bike
I usually take a 20 l waterproof boat bag (dunno what they're called in English, basically a cylinder 30 cm across and 80 long made of plasticy stuff with one open side that you roll together to close it) and put that on the luggage rack, and stuff the rest of my stuff in side bags and/or a large backpack.
>>16757487
If it's small enough, and I ride slowly enough...
>me
>going fast
>>16757468
Like all jap bikes, they're reliable but if anything goes wrong it's a real pain in the ass to fix. Need to take off loads of stuff just to access something or unscrew 4 bolts.
It's a fine bike stock. Really quiet exhaust; if you wanted a louder one they're kind of expensive. I put new levers on it and a fender delete because stock fenders are always shit. If you want to tour you should probably get heated grips because the fairings don't cover your 2 outside fingers on either side.
Biggest qualms with it were the slowly updating speedo/hard to see tach and working on it was painful. Only thing I know of that's known for going wrong is that for some reason the clutch wire wears out and gets stiff really easily. Have to get a new one every couple years or so.
Overall it was a great bike, easy to recommend. The best low(ish) cc sport touring bike on the market still since Yamaha discontinued it.
>>16757502
>I usually take a 20 l waterproof boat bag
Yeah that's what I'm getting, they're waterproof bags/rucksack.
I already have a 35lt form kappa and it's decent, I just need a bigger one so I don't have to bring my side bags, even though the pockets on them are pretty handy.
>>16757512
That's stupid, unless you turn the isle of man flag into a swastika
>>16757525
Thanks man. I appreciate that. I read about the speedo issue, unless you change the computing system I can't imagine there's an easy fix. How was fueling on it? Think a power Commander would be needed?
Finally got some actual sunshine in Devon, we could carry some proper speed this time.

>>16757533
The later models had a different cluster,. It probably updates faster or you could put a custom one on it if it really bothered you. I also found that it seemed to try to estimate what your speed would be at as if it was a full 1.5 seconds behind. For example:
>Going 60km/h, gaining 20km/h every 1.5 second
>Speedo updates to say 80, pretty accurate
>Stop accelerating at 80
>Speedo updates to show you at what you would have been at if you kept accelerating
>Next update, it's back to your accurate speed
Just a weird little quirk, it wasn't enough of a pain to warrant doing anything about swapping the speedo out to something else, but a weird decision by Yamaha.
Is ABS a meme?

Why aren't sports bikes all 2 strokes?
They are bikes that aim to be light and powerful sacrificing fuel efficiency and practicality. 2 stroke is harder to ride, but aren't those bikes already hard to master? Whats the point in having the more fuel efficient, heavier, less powerful and more practical 4 stroke in a track toy?

2 strokes make way more power and are inherently better for performance uses.

The 2 stroke is the superior concept because it combusts on every rotation while the 4 stroke only does on every second one.
Its just hard to pull of properly and has some faults that are hard to fix.
Same with rotary engines.

You make this sound like such an unimportant thing. Most of the advancement in sport bikes in the last 15 years has been making them actually rideable for plebs, a 500cc death machine is basically useless to anyone but a MotoGP rider. Even in GP racing they'd knock off a ton of the performance of the engine just to make them actually usable for anyone short of Doohan. Honda even had a two cylinder privateer bike with 50 less horsepower that managed to be competitive because it was so much easier to ride.
>>16758598

Anybody here in northern Idaho?
Winter riders/dirtbikers: how do you wash your bikes in the cold, if at all?
I've got a shitbike with dried mud underneath and sand around the swingarm (only a child's arm could reach). I've got a power washer but in the winter all the spigots are shut off.
I don't know if it's just my Honda, but I'm not a fan of hydraulic clutches. Is there any benefit to the hydraulic unit over just a cable? The cx500 had much better clutch feel.
What bike or type of bike would a skater ride? Serious answers only plz
>>16757156
If you dont brake like a retard you wont even know you have ABS - till you fuck up. You can learn to brake properly with or without.
You are just less likely to eat shit when you inevitably fuck up and lock up a wheel with no experience to save your ass from your own idiocy..
>>16758876
Smoother, no adjustments, more feel due to no cable friction, and less maintenance. It's just a direct link to the clutch plates; unless yours is messed up there's so reason it should have less feel than a cable.
Only real con is that it's harder to trail fix if you break a hose.

Poor guys buying old shitty bikes or building them from junkyard parts has been a part of motorcycle culture since the fuckin beginning. That's where you get all those classic bikes that are mashed up ""custom"" bikes. They were junk bikes.
I have more respect for a guy who built his ride or wrenches an old POS than the guy who walks into a dealership and throws a wad of money down on some brand new sport bike and brand new gear. Even worse if you're financing it because you couldn't really afford it in the first place.

Top end power vs mid range power.
the cb600f will keep pulling over 200km/h where your fz07 stops making power after 6000rpm so when it reaches about 180km/h it just dies in the arse.
Why does no one here understand these things?
>>16759372
But what if I don't want to rev crazy high to get power? I like mid-range power, not having everything above 10K rpm. That's the main reason I've never got into dedicated sports bikes, the power delivery just feels totally weird to me. I test rode an older R6 and it was pretty gutless until you got really high revs, then it took off like a rocket.
I guess I was raised on pony cars with tons of torque and dirtbikes so I'm used to having low-end power.
>>16758873
I wouldn't use a power washer on your bike.
A bucket of warm soapy water, some rags, and a hose/clean water would be fine.

140mph is about 225kmh, fz07 tops out at 120mph, about 193kmh.
and both the old and new cb600's do 140mph.
>just bought a 250€ phone
>I still need a new helmet
I guess I'll play with it a little bit and then send it back :(
>>16759448
It's higher in the rev range and more available over the course of the range. So when you are at the top of the operating range, that torque allows you to maintain the acceleration.
>>16759459

>>16759402
then get something of a liter or higher. They have power everywhre
>>16759402
The CBF600's power curve is flatter than an FZ-07.
Redline doesn't really matter at all, it's geared shorter.
>>16759487

>>16759462
It still has less torque at its peak rpm than an sv
>>16759518
That's Honda's signature smoothness right there.
>>16759534
Sv1000 or 650?
I meant more along the curve. Having a stable long lasting peak torque is cool. Even if it ramps up to a stable level.
>>16759506
Yes those are stock specifications.
>>16759542
650 specifically, but definitely both. It's just a weak engine in general.
>>16759549
It certainly isn't a powerhouse. That being said, if you really wanted peak power you'd be looking at a super sport. The nice part of this motor is it's got done oomph, but it'll run forever as it's relatively understressed. Not saying the FZ or Sv aren't, it's just different

I don't know anything about motorcycles and I've got a question.
I'm a car guy, but I'm turned off by newer vehicles because of how much electronics they use. Drive/Brake/Steer by wire, touch screens, driver assists, shit like that. Have motorcycles remained unmolested by all that stuff? I haven't got a problem with ABS, but I find unnecessary stuff that increases the price of a part stupid, like pushbutton starts and $200+ key fobs.
>>16759600
bikes have a good amount of electrics in them, but not as much as cars. Mostly it's EFI, riding modes, stuff like that. Shit some modern bikes still get made with carbs

>>16759600
>Have motorcycles remained unmolested by all that stuff?
No, but it's still early at least, so you can just barely still buy bikes without a bunch of shit. ABS is now mandatory in Europe and Japan though, and within the next generation it will start getting hard to find bikes with say, mechanical throttles.

It has in a way. Brakes still have a direct fluid connection between the lever and caliper, but computers can still intervene with their ABS systems.

Yeah pretty much but that still leaves a chance of something suddenly breaking or catastrophically breaking and leaving you stranded, like when my high hour bike broke a ring. I think the vast majority people just ride until it breaks before fixing it though.
>>16759931
They're just designed for different purposes. The R was a MX bike which didn't have lights, was a bit more powerful, and had closer gear ratios. The X was an enduro bike. The R was probably pretty competitive in MX but KTM has pretty much always had the best enduros of their time.
