I'm not interested in owning a 2 stroke 500 at all, i just love when /o/ complains about things not existing, then whey they do they're never right (see: toyobaru), in this case not road legal, as if you'd ever want to ride one of these on your fucking commute or something.

p.s, not all 500s had peaky powerbands, by the 90s that shit was all sorted with trick carbs, power valves, big bang layouts etc.

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/sport/motogp/2013/july/jul0813-redding-rides-schwantz-500/

>There was a lot of power, but it was pretty controllable, nothing like the razor sharp powerband I was expecting. It turns like a 125 and was still pulling in sixth. They should bring these back.

The engine characteristics would still be somewhat shit even with rider aids. But the main point is still that two strokes suck ass for emissions and fuel economy so they don't perform well in road applications, and there was no point in racing 2 strokes when nobody sells them or rides them.

Way back in the 60s Honda used to shit on less developed 2-strokes with stuff like a 4-stroke 5 cylinder 125 with an 8 speed gearbox but those were made illegal because they had fuck all to do with any non-GP motorcycle too.
>>

On just about any kit, it'll make 300whp, 450whp on E85 with fueling upgrades. A WRX would require a turbo upgrade to get to that level, which would make the costs similar. Enthusiasts would prefer the 600lbs lighter, limited slip diff, rwd car.

What's the deal with double clutch transmissions in bikes? Sounds like an objectively smart move for motorcycles in the long run. Not sure how much of a downside losing a clutch lever would be. DCTs shift faster than any manual or automatic and still maintain fully manual shifting, just without a clutch lever.

Cool, thanks for answering my questions /dbt/. I've ridden bikes before but nothing crazy. Certainly nothing with a quick shifter or set up for racing. I thought a DCT would be faster to shift than having to pull clutch/roll off throttle, shift up or down, and release clutch/roll on throttle. With a DCT you just flick a paddle or button and that's the end of it, I don't think you even have to roll off throttle. I've never ridden a DCT though so maybe I'm just retarded.

They don't like soft slow shifting. Basically they benefit from you banging up through gears and are a lot less quiet and smooth than regular setups.

Autotragics don't even use gears like manuals though, that's just planetary gearsets with clutches to hold the outer ring.
>>
>>16760595
Also curious about this. I fucking hate H pattern shifters but I love manually choosing my gear. I want more DCTs or sequential shifters for cars! I hate CVTs though, my girlfriend's old Nissan had a CVT and it was AWFUL to drive.

Dogboxes are conventional homo. DCT already has the next gear engaged before the shift is even initiated so there's no necessary throttle cut or power interruption.

F1 and MotoGP have their own non-DCT seamless shift gearboxes that use crazy electronics to engage two gears at once and disengage the previous gear before the entire thing explodes into tiny pieces but they cost a gorillion dollars.

>>16760595
Because they're a bitch to drive slow. Semis use dog rings.

I've never bled a totally clean system before. I've replaced calipers on cars, but you never get all of the old shit out before. Bikes usually have single system with comparatively short lines compared to cars.

Even with a fixed caliper design, only 1 bleeder valve at the caliper?

Started working on a new chop, all the shit at the front is gone off this one now.

I don't run front brakes, caliper, disc and speedometer drive are binned Front fender is tossed. I don't use a tachometer, or speedo, both removed, triple trees had 7/8 risers, the risers were removed for 1", bars are binned for a pair of buckhorns.

Pulled the motor out of the frame so I could do some modifications to it and get it ready for powdercoating, tossed the old XS drum brake rear tire, drilling a 34T sprocket in the harley bolt pattern to take a 16 x 3.25 rear laced harley wheel.

Engine was up in the air, drained oil the sleazy way since I'm deleting the starter... 7lbs of battery operated shit, gone.

While draining the oil though...

Yeah it's an XS650 motor in a custom lightweight rigid frame, modernish KZ650 front end on it.

This was the chop I built previous to it, an XJ650, ignore the fire extinguisher shit, a main jet vibrated out and it shot fuel like a flamethrower through the exhaust and lit up some oil.
>>
>>16761117
That's dumb. Should know why you're buying a DRZ even though you're going to end up buying a DRZ anyways.

You could get a KTM 625 for about the same price. Won't be significantly less reliable if it's maintained well but parts will be more expensive. Won't handle being abused and forgetting to change the oil for 8k miles like a DRZ, but will be significantly faster.

KTM 690 if you wanna spend way more money for way better everything.

WR250X/R probably will be hard to find and is pretty comparable regardless of what any memers wanna say.

All of the above have factory interchangeable supermoto and dirt wheels you can get.

DR650 or XR650R a good if you wanna travel on the highway more and don't mind putting slightly more effort into a proper street setup, and a kicker in the case of the Honda.

To add onto this, I own a DR650 and my mate has a KLR, after fixing the carb on the KLR they make similar power but the KLR is like a boat, sort of heavy and uninspiring doing tight turns and the risk of falling over and fucking up the fairings. With a KLR you sit IN it, a DR you sit on TOP. Makes it feel better maneuverability wise but I'm fucking terrible at offroading so take that with a grain of salt

Could it be the speedo/tach plastic whistling or vibrating? Or possibly the cables slapping around?

If it's an internal problem, I'm inclined to point to the transmission. The sprocket and chain are new. But it sounds like it's coming from the front of the bike, and not the center. And I don't have any abnormal vibrations.

It should also be noted that the speedo and tach have a broken bolt or something wrong with the plastic covers. Because those were loose when I bought the bike. Slapped some silicone in them, that should be good. But the tach can still shift around.

Any idea of what I should do to chase this gremlin down?

with 14/45 gearing it will do over 180km/h no worries, would easily last over 300 hours between rebuilds if it were being ridden on the road too considering it lasts about 300 hours/15000km off road.
>>
>>16761365
The DRZ can comfortably cruise around 65 with a 44T rear sprock or 75 with a 39T rear sprocket, either one will top out around 98mph. The 44T rear will be competent if not extraordinary in the dirt. It will be easier to manage offroad because it's got more torque and wider gears.
I assume the WR is much the same on the highway and could be better offroad but require you to be less lazy because you'll have to shift and stay in the power band more consciously.
>>
>>16761356

i kinda like the small fuck around bike too since i can still take it to the go kart track and ride it around town for fun. I am starting to go to track around 5-6 times a year though on the big bike and i am starting to get worried about having people miss braking points and fucking shit up or myself even making a mistake which is pretty possible. Im trying to work it so maybe i can get both. 3-4k for grom, 5k for older gsxr or 636. i have two bikes im selling that i inherited, they're standards and i never ride them so i'm trying to get something i will ride.

Don't forget Terra Circa and Mondo Sahara, great sequels to Mondo Enduro.

Fuckin love those films

anyone in MN?

they're scared bc its not the #1 hp

Kind of want a hypermotard but I've heard they have lots of electrical issues. Would I be better off with a Dorsoduro? is there anything else like it under 750cc? Supermotos made for street is what I'm looking for, not just a naked twin.
>>
Do I REALLY need to shell out $90 for a new air filter? Why can't I just bang off the dust or vacuum it and toss it back in?

Have you seen a spent filter?
First up it's beyond filthy, secondly it gets all wonky because of aspiration

WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU EVEN ASKING
>>
>>16762067
I just don't want the maintenance of a road legal dirtbike though
>>
>>16762077
The service intervals for the 690smc and 701sm is twice as often as a dorsoduro. I don't really want to be checking valves twice a year.

Of these bikes the only ones remotely comparable to a Hypermotard is the 690/701.
Even the 640 is a carbed 5 speed.
>>

>street legal 2-stroke

but how?
>>
>>16762135
The rd350 is still being made in 3rd world countries.
>>
>>16762131
>The Dosoduro and Hypermotard are not supermotos despite their advertising and 'look'.
Yeah they're hypermotos, but if he's looking for an alternative to those the DRZ just don't cut it mate.
>>
>>16762131
I'm just trying to find a good compromise that I can reliably commute with every day and hoon on the weekends or go on some trips. They're called supermoto's or supermotards by everywhere online, so that's what I called it.

Whether or not there's a more apt name, I'm not sure and I've never seen one but a road legal dirtbike isn't ideal for what I want it for.
>>
>>16762154
So what you seem to be looking for is like a Africa-twin or some other adventure bike.

Nah, that's too heavy, low power, and I want something under 750cc otherwise I get raked over the coals by insurance costs.

Not really looking at doing much off roading. Just kind of want a hooligan bike that's fun to ride in the city.
>>
>>16762179
So you want a supermoto...

That would be great but I want more power than they can produce. At least 85hp or so. Is there anything like that?
>>16762182
I actually own a sport naked now, was looking for a change
>>16762193
I understand there are going to be compromises, obviously there's no bike that's going to give 100hp, be reliable, light, and low service intervals. The dorsoduro just looks like the best middle ground between a road legal dirt bike and a street bike. Sorry if I wasn't clear that's what I wanted, but I was just calling them what everybody else calls them.
>>
>>16760744
I'm no expert but that shit does nothing if she hasn't been taking it beforehand as well. Or maybe there are different kinds of pills, dunno.

Since the new thread is dead on arrival, let's just stay here.

Should I a carbed Hornet or a FI Hornet?

More expensive though.
But hey I guess I get less fuel consumption and maintenance in exchange so whatever.
>>
>>16760195
but they aren't nearly as developed as a 4 stroke racing engine can be, I bet if they developed a proper fuel injected 2 stroke, it would be faster
