Okay...So I love my Miata to death and I continue to look forward to doing things to it.

However, there is something going on with the car that is bugging the shit out of me.

I can not isolate where the noise is coming from. If anything, it sounds like *maybe* inside the transmission.

When I am decelerating there is an intense and annoying metallic buzz-like noise. Usually around 2-3000 rpm most the time.
The noise goes away instantly when I press the clutch pedal in.

The car has been doing it ever since I got it a year ago.

Just replaced the clutch and flywheel along with the pilot and release bearing hoping it would resolve the issue. It didn't get worse, but it didn't get better.

I have no idea what the hell it could be.

I hate trying to describe it, I don't think anyone will be able to understand my poor description. Unless you have heard the noise yourself and know what I'm talking about

Anyone has any idea, please let me know.

In other news. My woman got me a gv lip for my birthday. Mounted it up and love it. Just need to get it professionally painted semigloss black. (Yes I am aware how dirty the car is. Pollen season)

Hey Miata Senpai,

I got an issue. Basically, I drove through the McDonalds drivethrough by accident with the E-Brake engaged. It made some weird noises. After that, I went to a car wash (self service) where I hit the undercarriage pretty good with the high pressure hose.

One of these two things fucked my emergency brake somehow.

I popped up the rear and used the allen hex adjuster pins on the calipers to make sure the e-brake is configured correctly. The left side works fine but I stripped the shit out of the hex adjuster bit on the right side so I couldn't adjust that much at all, although I do the spinning test with the rotors and they both work fine.

But the e-brake still doesn't work

Any ideas?

It's the heat shield on the downpipe before the cat. It's bolted on one side and tack welded on the other. At least one of your tacks has broken off. Unbolt it and then work it around until you can break the other tacks.
>>
>>16754217
This is one of my dreams, not sure how well it would work though. I had read that the suspension doesn't have a whole lot of travel, still I think it looks pretty good. Might have issues with the gearing when you put those big tires on it.

i talked to one of the dudes from rev9autosport asking about a group buy but they arent doing one anytime soon unfortunately So my options are

1. lube my asshole and pay $900+
2. 3D Print replica of jet stream headlight's (i dont even know where i would start there)
3. or do something like pic related. (which looks kinda ghetto)

I should add that my car's previous owner removed the flip up headlight's so nothing is there at all

How do I know if it's an HLA tick or a rod knock?

From what I've read lifter ticks occur at a steady frequency even at idle, while knocks are more violent and occur on and off during idle and revs?

I'm not a trap so I wouldn't know but it's definitely easier for chicks. My friend Jess makes about 6k a month from a sugar daddy she doesn't even fuck. I'm a dude so it's harder.

Miatas have hydraulic valve lash adjusters, there's nothing to adjust manually.

I must be fucking crazy. I went to pick up a friend of friend that works as a mechanic at a Mazda dealer and I finally saw the Miata mx-5 RF. I need your guy's honest opinion, should I not buy my buddy's 92 miata with a rod knock for under 1k?

My other mechanic friend said not to go for it since it's already knocking and its a 92, but I was hoping to swap in another motor since miata's engines are cheap.

Thoughts? I was thinking I'd get a miata with an engine I trust for 15 than a beater miata for the same price with a worse condtion miata.

Roll bar will do wonders for rigidity. The FM butterfly brace is overpriced, but it works. You can DIY a brace with some steel bar and a welder. The frame rails I'd just buy since making them is a little more complex.

>>16755357

Have you checked the parking brake cable? It wouldn't be weird if it snapped or at least popped off the retainers on the caliper. Check that first
>>
>>16761590
There's nothing wrong with roughing up rotors. That said, I agree that the problem is more likely cable-related.
>>
>>16761554

It's literally a 5 minute job on a press brake. There's nothing to it.
>>
>>16754183
Haha I have what sounds like the SAME exact thing. It annoys the shit out of me.

Like someone else has said, I've accepted the transmission is probably on its way out of the door. Luckily they can be bought for $4-500. Here's a video of a sound it makes 30mph in 5th at 1.8k. GNARLY.

I'm determined to drive it till it blows up.

>>
>>16761783
Really? I hadn't heard of it with the 6 speeds. Odd seeing as they're not made by mazda.

The other option could be an RX7 box? I believe they're essentially the same but a little tougher/different ratios?

You'd probably loose some final drive though.

how do you guys keep your paint/plastics looking sharp?
>>
>>16761833
Did you remember to open the bleeder valve?
>>
>>16761806
RX-7 box isn't tougher unless you're talking about the R-type transmission in the turbo cars that shares nothing in common with the M-type in the Miata and NA RX-7s. The R-type transmission is good for around 600 ft-lbs compared to about 180 for the M-type and 220 for the AZ6 (Miata 6 speed), but it weighs 50 pounds more and doesn't mount up in the same way as the Miata or NA RX-7 transmissions.
>>
>>16761896
Isn't there a varient of the RX-7 box which is supposed to be stronger? Maybe it's an ausfag only thing but i've seen the guys in the forums here buying RX-7 boxes when they blow up their 6 speeds. (They also seem to think the 5 speed will handle more torque than the 6 which is at ends with what you're saying so maybe there's more differences at play here)

>>16761485
You can be, it's not that hard bud, especially if you live in a metropolitan area.
>>16761794
To be honest, I'd just be happy to own one
>>
>>16761927
That's just ausfags being retarded. The Miata, FB, NA FC, and all Courier-based B-series pickups (except B2600) used the same transmission with slight differences. For example, the NA6 transmission and possibly others from the late 80s to early 90s had a potential problem with the shift forks that could cause them to get stuck in reverse, but they're all roughly the same strength in terms of power holding ability.

There was a 5 speed transmission that was in the turbocharged RX-7s as well as the B2600 and MPV that was much stronger. It looks like this. You can identify it by the ribbed casing, the removable inspection plate on the bottom, and the fact that it is insanely fucking heavy. The only bellhousing options for it are rotary, G6 (which may be the same as the F series engines, I'm not sure), and Mitsubishi wideblock. There is no bellhousing that adapts it to the B series engine, so you'll need to have a custom bellhousing adapter plate made. You'll also need to fab transmission and differential mounts because the FC, B2600, and MPV don't use a powerplant frame, and the FD locates the PPF on the opposite side from the NA and NB, the same side as the NC.

You're better off spending that effort on a T5 if you need to hold more power than the 6 speed can handle.

>>16761959
Are you using the screw tool or are you trying to press it in by hand? If you can't get it in even with the tool, check and see if that corner is conspicuously less worn than the others. If it is, you've probably got a seized caliper.

Wew lad, just went for a midnight run on the mountain roads in the miats. So much for having a full tank, but it's always good fun.

Still, there's a couple of things I need to get fixed. Some oil leaks from the front seal and maybe rear seal.
There's a weird clunk whenever I go above say 50% pedal travel on the brake, sounds like something hitting the firewall. I usually get the clunk, then it clunks again, sorta like if it was something popping out of place and then back in.
One of the hardtop side latches pops out of the striker sometimes, no idea what's up with that.

To any anons who did the front seal, how hard is it to do? How hard is it to fuck up?
Any clues on what that clunk might be? I checked all the suspension bolts and torqued them to spec, caliper bolts as well. Master cylinder is properly attached and doesn't shake either. There is some up and down play on the steering shaft, somewhere between the firewall and the steering wheel, but I think it doesn't fit the symptoms. Shocks seem good still, they were replaced by the previous owner for some KYB OEM type ones. Springs look to be in good shape. Maybe worn bushings? Any ideas?

>>
>>16766276
>https://owensboro.craigslist.org/cto/5998378411.html
thats fucking expensive dude. 160k mileage on top of that. If it has a torsen and its literally the only one in your area and youve been looking for awhile, go for it. I would try to get around 3.5k for it though. 4200 is too much.
>>
>>16766276
>>16766410

I disagree. I think that is a good buy. The main thing you'll want to check for is rust. It doesn't look like it has much but ideally you want NONE. If it has just minimal undercarriage rust around the frame rails, then I would say go for it. If you see shit around the wheel wells/rocker panels then I would ask to lower the price.

Other than that, that seems like a decent buy. Interior is clean. Timing belt and clutch have both been done - both are huge maintenance expenses. Tires look good. Engine bay looks clean. Stock headunit. This car hasn't been fucked with very much from what I can tell and is pretty much the most desirable NA one can get (1.8). See if he'll take 4k? The new tires are a plus too.
>>
>>16761806
Yeah fucking really. It sucks huge cock. But the car drives/shifts fine... for now. Drive it till it blows up.. r-right?

My future thoughts are actually to swap a 5 speed in. I'm 99% sure I can just bolt it on with no problems, even though my car is 6 speed. The 5 speeds are more available and way cheaper. Makes me sad I just bought the car and already thinking about a transmission swap.

You need to fucking differentiate between fitting and being able to cram yourself into something. I'm 6'2 and I hardly fit into an NC. An NA is out of the question. I just barely fit in my FD ffs. Could I fit into the Miata if it had a whole foot less of head room AND leg room? Well, I could cram myself in there for sure, but that's not fitting. Stop lying to get people to buy a Miata. They're tiny as fuck
>>
>>16767630
if you look up Miata foamectomy theres a 6'5" dude who fits into a NA fine.

also height is just one factor there are other things are stopping you from fitting in a Miata. You might be a fat ass. You might have long ass legs.

Dont be stupid because I'm 6'2 and just fit fine in my NA that Ive had for about 2 years.
>>
>>16767660
>foamectomy
Oh okay just remove all the foam from the seat rendering the comfort non-existent and anyone can fit just fine! How could we have been so stupid to miss such an obvious solution?
>>
>>16767660
Once again... You must have no space to comfortably put your legs. In an NA, with my leg fully extended on the clutch with the seat back, my knee is bent 30 degrees or so. The windshield is damn near a visibility hazard. So either you're full of shit about fitting, or you're full of shit about being 6'2.
>>
>>16767669
>stock miata seats
>any measurable level of comfort
There's your problem. Either cut the foam out or get seats that are actually comfortable (most seats that will fit are much lower) and bolt it to the floor or use side rails.

>>16767685
See: >>16753392
>>
>>16767660
Hey honestly I'm 6'1" and I have some issues. On the stock seats my head is half above the windshield frame. I got some Bride lo-max seats and bolted them as low as I could, and I still need to remove the bottom cushion on that to be able to pass a broomstick test.

>>
>>16768169
A used MS2 will run you about $500.
>>
>>16768120
Depends on your definition of decent. You can get a mechanically perfect NA with 130k-150k miles for right around $2,000 - but you can expect some cosmetic issues. Worn interior, faded paint, some light rusting, etc.... but it'll get the job done and last you for years without any problems.

If you actually want something that is both mechanically sound and in cosmetically decent shape, you're probably going to be looking at between $2700-$4000 for a decent NA. The higher the price, the less miles it should have.

>>16768169
>>16761833

I am not sure if you are aware but the rear calipers have a small plug on the back (I think it's a 14mm) and then INSIDE this plug is a 4mm allen adjustment pin. This does not thread into anything. It just sits there. Don't try torquing it in either direction otherwise you'll strip the pin or the grooves in the caliper.

You're supposed to use this adjustment pin to move the pistons, not a c-clamp.

I went to Elizabeth to pick up my Miata and I'm from Connecticut, then again the previous owner took care of this car and it was never driven in the rain/winter.

It's possible to find rust free Miatas in your area for a reasonable price you have to be patient.

And if you aren't patient then you'll have to travel a bit.

I wish dude. I'd love to get my hands dirty and get a brand new transmission in the end, but it's so much cheaper/easier to just buy a new transmission.

A used 5 speed is like $200. 6 speed isn't too much more than that.
>>
>>16768800
I'm running bride lo-max seats and they lowered me to the point where I can pass a broomstick test. I'm guessing the sparcos are about the same dimension at least.

If you want to bolt it straight to the floor you'll need to cut out the OEM seat mounting humps. That means no returning to stock, so keep it in mind. I instead used some 5/8' steel bar to make an adapter for the side mounts. I could still lower it an inch or so more by cutting out the humps, but I want to be able to return to stock
>>
>>16768806
Go to a dealership and ask to see one, then sit in it.
>>
>>16770034
That's not much cheaper than the price of a rebuild kit, and then you have a weaker transmission with an asston of miles on it. If you can buy 6 speeds for not too much more than that, buy all of them that you can. They're even getting rarer and more valuable as high power autocross guys continue to lunch multiple transmissions per season.

>>16768169
MSPNP2 is $800 brand new. A brand new fully assembled Microsquirt is $300, and a DIY MS3 is around that as well if you know how to solder. You have nearly $500 worth of bandaids there, since you'll only need a $20 eBay AFPR instead of that expensive, calibrated rising rate regulator that's still going to blow up engines if you try to make any real power using it.

Get your BOV off eBay, too.

Well for what it's worth, when I say straight to the floor I more mean straight to the stock mounting points, just without a slider or anything. But if I have to cut out the stock humps, then so be it!

Thanks for the advice. I had a lead on a fairly cheap Sprint, but sadly it got sold before I could make it there. Hoping I can find one locally to try out before I actually buy it. Dunno if it'll fit my fat ass.

Yeah my stock NB tops out at just over 110. And it's doing 3300 rpms and geting 28 miles to a gallon doing 75 on the interstate.

Highways though, keep it about 60 and the wind noise isn't deafening and you don't have to fear a cop waiting in the bushes with a radar gun.

Still more power would be fun.

Noob rim offset question.
Gonna get those JR3 bad boys. Stock NC rims are ET55, JR3 are ET40 (or even 25). Does that mean they'll be wider or narrower than the stock ones?

File: wheel.offset.gif (14KB, 352x200px) Image search: [Google]
wheel.offset.gif
14KB, 352x200px
>>16780798
The rims will be equally as wide, but an ET40 will stick out more than an ET55.

Offset is how far from the center of the rim the hub is. Positive offset means the hub of the rim is further away from the car, and thus the rim is more tucked in, negative offset means the hub itself is closer to the car, and the rim pokes out more
>>
>>16780819
Yes I meant if the rim would stick out more or less, not talking about its width, I'm dumb.
I think I'll go with the ET40 then, thanks.
>>
I forgot to put Loctite on the cam bolts before tightening them after a timing belt job. Have already installed everything and driven the car again since.

>>
>>16779327
Bumping for this.
>>
>>16780798
The Miata's wheel bearing is centered about 35mm inboard of the wheel mounting surface. In order to maximize bearing life, which is lower on these cars than most due to using dual row ball bearings instead of tapered needle bearings, you want a wheel as close to ET35 as possible. Once you start going past 9" wheel width that becomes impossible due to clearance issues with the fender well, though.
>>
>>16752135
Plow driver here. I've driven trucks with load in the back bed and without load and it's a world of difference for traction. How does a miatas relatively low weight give for better traction in the snow?
>>
>>16781301
I mean the cam gear bolts ofc i case you are wondering.
>>
>>16781419
It's not only about the total weight, but about weight distribution. Lower weight on the driven wheels gives less traction force, but a lighter car needs equally less force from the tires to accelerate, brake, turn etc, so it cancels out.

The Miata has 45%-50% of it's weight on the driven wheels (the rear wheels) in static condition. That's pretty decent for a RWD car and more than most RWD sedans or trucks have. It's however less than most FWD have and of course much less than AWD cars (100%).

Ok, I don't think this justifies a new thread but it's Miata related so here goes:
>in class today
>be me, with two car guy friends
>they went out to look for a Miata to use as a ChumpCar car next year
>they talk about how they drove all throughout the city alone together in a 91 Miata
>they talk about how they kept switching positions because they each want a turn
>while telling the story they keep slapping each other on the back and leaning on each other

Now, honestly, if it was just I wouldn't even have cared. It actually sounds pretty fun. But this next story is where the red flags came up. I'm also calling the two guys Joe and Tim

>talk about how they went back to Joe's house later on
>Joe talks about how they were talking about how his pot belly is the farthest thing that sticks out of his body
>Joe's little bro walks up and says "no that is" and points to his boner
>Joe and Tim are dying laughing
>I ask Tim how he knows
>"Oh yeah we were all playing Forza in Joe's room and Joe was changing"

So my question is, given that they change in front of each other and pop a boner, what percentage is it possible those two gave each other brojobs in that Craigslist beater?

>>

first off its your first car and youll probably come across someone whether its a friend, family memeber or someone you dont know calling you a faggot for driving one.

that being said, you can't really worry about what people call you.

Im assuming you are 18 years old or younger. You ever hear that rhyme, sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me...

if words hurt you, I'd suggest killing yourself because you arent going to make it.

Now as for shopping for a Miata you couldve easily googled this yourself
