I have a Mazda3 2015. Looking to get a 2017 Miata RF because it looks sexy as fuck and I'm rapidly closing in on the age/time in life where buying a sports car is not practical. I thought about Americna muscle, but I just don't like the look and the fact that most turds have American muscle.

Anyway, 2017 Miata RF, anyone have experience with it? I can't seem to find comparison picks of with/without appearance package.
>>
>>16783198
Stock tires are 16x6.5, JR3s are 16x7, I'm euro so the only tire size I can mount is 205x50r16 so I guess I can't get 16x8 rims. Stock height for now yes. Do you think I still have to work the fenders with 16x7 +40?

Not a lot actually but in case of a miata it's probably 1/4 of the price of the whole car

My coilovers wasnt that cheap, they are just superstiff because of really low clareance.
and Miata because, I saw few videos people stating that NA can be only driven hard or something along those lines

Guess what, forged wheels on a miata are not smart. The first rock chip on them means they are worth shit.

Even if you tell me that you go racing, they're still not necessary. What wheels do you think they run in Spec Miata? TE37s? No, they run $135 cast wheels. pic related.

Stop being retarded, people who blow $4k on wheels for a shitbox are about as dumb as you can get.
>>
Does anyone know where I can get NA center caps? All the ones I can find are stupid expensive.

Your best bet is probably buying a used set of chipped or damaged OEM wheels with center caps for as cheap as you can find.

For the daisies no idea, the later wheels on the NA have a more reasonable sized center cap though. Honestly look for a set of these, they're lighter and look better imo. You can probably get a nice set for around $100
>>
>>16789083
That wouldn't satisfy my autism. My rims have a channel that runs around the center of the rim for caps to snap into. I would never be happy with anything else.

You can either look at some genuine OZ Rally Racing wheels, which will run you a hefty chunk of change, or something sorta similar which are some BBS wheels with the turbofan covers, replicas of course. The other option is to buy some vintage OZ wheels which will also be expensive, but maybe will give you a more reasonable rim size, the new ones start at 17 inches

>>
>>16789444
>all reps are bad
>you'd better be willing to shell out $2k for some used wheels

guess what, not all reps are chinese knockoffs. something close to the original wheel design, without costing an arm and a leg is perfectly acceptable. Your car is putting down at most 300hp to the wheels with a built engine and turbo, you're not going rallying with your car. Buying some original OZ wheels is nice if you have the means, but don't act like they will be the difference between life and death on a daily.

Replaced up and lower shift boots under 3 years ago with OEM

Both are destroyed.

Is there a better than OEM option?\

>Jass Performance
Expensive and only the upper boot (Which is arguably less important) (125 for upper boot)
>Mx5Doctor
Lower boot looks stronger, upper boot is trash ($100)
>5X Racing race kit
OEM quality ($180)
>I.L Motorsports
Appears to be the same as OEM quality, also expensive once shipping is included ($140)
>OEM
Broke after less than 3 years last time, hardly worth the money at that rate ($130)

Get one of those $50 short shifter kits. It comes with all the plastic bushings, and the short throw is definitely worth it. It feels amazing. For the lower boot, get one for the NC. It fits the same and they're a lot cheaper for some reason. Only source I've got for the upper boot is 5xracing, so I guess just get one of those universal rubber accordion boots to replace it and the leather boot at the same time.

I am in the market for new summer tires. Wut does /mg/ rock?
>>
>>16794871
It's hard to say. They do seem to hold up quite well on Miatas even after many miles, but track driving or frequent autocrossing with sticky tyres can tire them out quicker.

If you see cracks from the outside, they can definitely do with replacing. I still have the original ones on my car, but I don't know how different it would be with new ones. 60k miles, only occasionally autocrossing.

My miata is running 15" 8j et0 wheels that look stunning, but I can't lower it because the tires rub against the fenders.

What are my options? Can I get away with just rolling them? I would hate to cut into my stock fenders to make room for overfenders. Because the body is in pretty good shape.

It's not really about the look, but more about the fact that about 70% of miatas here have rust all around the car, and mine is pretty clean, so i'd rather roll them than cut into them.

K24 is going to be the cheapest engine swap unless you're rednecking everything, and even that is going to run you $8k absolute minimum. The LFX swap isn't meaningfully cheaper than a V8, and the Honda V6 swap kit is a fucking joke.

Just stick a huge muffler on the back and you won't have to hear the engine at all anymore.

Bilsteins with coilover sleeves are the best option until you get into the $1500+ range. There's megathreads on the subject on m.net and mt, and probably cr as well.
>>
>>16800951
Yeah, I agree that if you want the best coilovers you can't really cheap out, but I think most people are looking into decent coilovers, not full on 10k springs and 60 way adjustable dampers.

I think something like a tein flex z is good for most people. Reasonable spring rates and separate preload and ride height adjustment. That and an upgraded front sway bar will make most cars much tidier around the corners.

REMINDER:
Adjustment knobs on shocks do nothing (or make it worse) until you get into the really high price options.

Bilsteins with threaded sleeves and Hyperco springs are you best bet for something cheap and good.

That was actually a really interesting read anon. Does this all apply to road use though? How much are some bilsteins with sleeves and springs? I'm just trying to gauge if some $800 coilovers will be worth it in comparison.

In my case my car is mostly a dd, with occasional road racing, and backroads. I also need to maintain a reasonable ride height for daily use since potholes are incredibly bad here.

>>16801257
You don't need separate proad and ride height adjustment when you're building your suspension yourself, because you can get exactly the ride height and preload you want with a tape measure and and a little math.

At the cheapest end, you'll need a set of used OEM Bilsteins ($150-300 depending on wear, these things last basically forever unlike the OE Showas), a set of eBay coilover sleeves ($35), a pair of eBay springs ($60, usually you'll be able to use two of the four springs with that come with the sleeves), and a set of Honda bump stops ($20). That's less than $400 for a ride that's quite a bit better than your average eBay coilovers like Racelands, Megan, Yonaka, or V-Maxx.

Then, if you want to spend some money up to the $600-800 range, you can get stronger sleeves (no problems with mine but I'll be the first to admit Chinese engineering and machining isn't confidence inspiring), deepened top hats for more compression travel (ISC racing makes these), brand name springs (Hyperco and Swift are best, Eibach are okay), torrington bearings to keep your springs from binding on the perches (only one necessary per corner), a rebuild and custom valve job (local circle track shops will usually do this for $60-75/corner), etc. Buy whatever matters to you, don't waste money on shit you don't care about.

Once you get into the $1000-1200 range, it's time to start saving pennies until you can afford real coilovers from Feal or 949Racing. There's honestly no reason to buy new coilovers from anyone but those two, but if you find a set of used ohlins for $1200 or something, by all means buy that.

google is a cool tool

http://wiki.miata.net/tiki-index.php?page=Checking+Out+a+Used+Miata

'94-'97 is the best year if you want an NA with the 1.8 and LSD.
>>
>>16801920
It's a Miata.net garage article. I recommend you bookmark the garage if you're just starting out with Miatas.

As for the best years, I suppose you could make a case for 93, 94, 96, 97, 99, 01, or 04-05. Honestly, I wouldn't really worry about the year so much, just about anything from later years can be swapped onto an earlier car down the road if you decide you can't live without it.

A quick primer on generations:
>89-93: 1.6L NA, aka NA6
These cars have weaker everything, but they made more of these cars than 94-present combined. Some people like the 1.6L better for muh feels, but everything about them is objectively worse. They have the best dash out of all Miatas, but the radio bezel cracks all the time and is expensiveish to replace.
>94-97
Bigger engine, bigger brakes, stronger transmission, stronger diff, etc. These cars (and all afterward) were available with helical (torsen) limited slip differentials rather than the useless viscous LSDs on the NA6. Expect a $500-1000 premium over a similar condition 1.6L.
>98
Doesn't exist, at least in the US. The handful of NAs built in 98 were sold as MY97, most cars built in 98 were NBs sold as MY99.
>99-00: NB1, aka early NB, aka zenki for weebs
No popups and piggu fattu, but everything else is better. These cars are slightly stiffer, in part due to nearly 100 pounds worth of bolt-on chassis braces. They have more power, more fender clearance for wide tires, and better suspension geometry. Notable are the ('99) 10th Anniversary Edition and the Sport trim. Both came with yellow 'Hard-S' Bilsteins included, the 10AE came with a 6-speed (which was the only way to get it before '01), and the Sport package came with larger brakes.
>01-05: NB2, aka NB facelift, aka VVT, aka kouki
All of these cars came with the Sport brakes, and had the 6 speed transmission available as an option. They also had a more powerful engine with VVT can phasing on the intake side. These engines are highly sought after.
>>
>>16802059
So if I want aesthetic paradise pop up wink action go with the NA 94-97 for the better upgrade package.

Pure performance oriented go with 01-05 for the powerful engine and 6 speeder.

Now for the real question!

Yellow or Black for the color.

Fellow homosexuals, I come to you seeking guidance. I recently purchased an OEM Shifter Rebuild Kit for my NA and when I received it today, I noticed that these little washers or whatever the nigger they are are kinda bent. Is this normal?
>>
>>16802132
6 speeds weren't standard except on the 10AE ('99) and MSM (Turbo, '04-'05), so don't be surprised if you find an NB2 without it. The 6 speeds also had a shorter top gear but compensated for it with a taller final drive, so the actual top speed/cruising RPM is the same as with the 5 speed. The 6 speed has closer ratios, which can be fun if that's your thing, but some people find it dreary to have to shift more often. The shifter on the 6 speed also isn't as smooth as on the 5 speed, but it can handle more power than the 5 speed (about 220 ft-lbs for the 6MT compared to about 180). They also tend to be more expensive due to their rarity and strength, so a replacement 6 speed is about $350-500 compared to $75-175 for a 5 speed.

Yellow was only available as a color in 1992, while black has always been an option. I had my white car resprayed yellow forever ago, so clearly I approve of the color. If you're getting your car painted, keep in mind that yellow is a tricky color to paint and will often cost more (yellow was a $2000 option, IIRC, which is why no one bought it and it was discontinued) and will fade faster than other colors. If this is a Maaco job, don't even bother. Black is a bitch to keep clean, but summer heat isn't too bad of an issue because opening the roof for 10-15 seconds will cycle out all the hot air, and then you can either leave the top down or put it back up to enjoy the AC. If you live anywhere hot, I'd recommend shying away from leather because your seats will get painfully hot if you park in the sun.

>>16802154
Yes, those are spring washers that are supposed to take up slack in the bushings. You'll see that the ones you take off are bent in the same way.

Buying old low mileage cars is a waste of money if you ever plan on driving them. Buy something with more reasonable mileage on it and spend the money you save on replacing wear items and you'll come out on top in the end.

Don't listen to this guy. 6.1k for a miata is not unreasonable if it's in good condition. If it's rust free, the paint is good, the top is good, includes a hardtop, has the torsen LSD, and has a service history it's a decent price, maybe a bit on the high side.

If you want to pay 2-3k for a miata in the current market you'll either be waiting forever until one shows up that will sell very quick, or you'll buy a real piece of crap
>>
>>16805184
That has every single red flag possible:
>JDM Swap
I have no idea what this moron means, the jdm engine and usdm engine are the same
>has a hole in the exhaust and the owner left it that way because he likes it
owner is clearly an idiot who would gladly have a straight pipeed stock honda
>rota wheels
would be fine except if like he says they are reps it means the owner is so cheap he can't even afford to pay $130 a wheel for some rotas, which is a bare minimum
>car is slammed
that speaks for itself
>paint looks like it was done with a spraycan
>it has those retarded clips between the fenders and the bumper
>full on aluminium race seat
>4 point harness
retarded

In conclusion, the car is owned by a retarded moron who likes the sound of a 1.6 miata with an exhaust leak, is riding on possibly rota reps which is as ghetto as you can get, the car is slammed so you know it's been scraped to shit, whatever swap the owner did is "JDM" apparently which makes no sense, the paint is shit, the clips on the bumper and fender are dumb, and the car was a drift missile.

Offer $2k because at least the hardtop is worth something.
>>
Wanna be drift fag here

91 Miata convertible pops up on craigslist for $500 USD, doesn't run, poster mentioned something about the harmonic balancer being wallored out. Not exactly concerned with that because I was hoping on swapping it anyway and the body was in decent shape and the top wasn't torn to shreds. Has anybody here done anything similar, have some advice on which way to go about it? A 1.6 I4 doesn't appeal to me all that highly, but perhaps you guys know something I don't? Was originally thinking a 302 swap for nothing other than keeping the costs low, but perhaps I should be thinking something light to prevent messing with the distribution. Thoughts?
>>
>>16799479
MB Drifters, actually kinda hard to find.
>>
>>16805314
Look up the crank wobble problem on the early 1.6s. You're gonna need a new crankshaft if it's bad enough. Also the 1.6s either have a open or viscous lsd which both are pretty bad for drifting. Best to just look for a 1.8.
>>
>>16805314
Not personally big into drift builds, but general knowledge helps I guess. If you want the ass to come around easy, just throw a 302 in there. You can get into a full swap for around $5k if you keep it reasonable. Less if you fab shit up yourself and get a good deal on an engine/tranny. The weight distribuition isn't that bad, but keep in mind it's still a heavy engine. An LS swap will keep you around 54/46, but a swap is around $15k.

If you want to go for the absolute cheapest build you can, buy that car, source a 1.8, and weld the diff. You can get into drifting and learn proper car control for like $700 for the engine, ecu, and misc crap. After that you can throw some forged pistons and a turbo and put out around 300whp easy.
>>
>>16805358
Thanks. Probably another stupid question because I'm too lazy to look it up, but does the 1.6 and 1.8 have different trannies?
>>
>>16805375
Same tranny, but the flywheel and clutch are bigger on a 1.8. You can run a 1.6 flywheel and clutch on a 1.8 motor and it will be lighter, but reduced area for the clutch means it might slip. I'd just get a 1.8 with a 1.8 flywheel and clutch.

Also, I forgot to mention but the final gearing on the1.6 diff is more aggressive to compensate for the smaller engine. This might be useful for drifting since it will accelerate faster, but it will lower top speed and make the highway a living nightmare. (70mph on a 1.8 with 1.8 gearing leaves you sitting at around 4.5k rpm)
>>
>>16805388
Excellent. Thank you for the heads up, I'll keep this in mind
>>
>>16805184
I don't understand why people try to make their cars more "JDM". No matter how much you do, the car will never be JDM. At the end of the day you're just playing dress-up.
>>
>>16805236
>In conclusion, the car is owned by a retarded moron who likes the sound of a 1.6 miata with an exhaust leak

Literally me.

I don't think they craigslist listing is that bad. You could part it out for more than that just based on the hard top and coils alone.

I'd prefer an unmolested stock with low miles but those are going to be expensive

not worth the swap unless you have the money to do it and if you do, you should do an SR20 swap

This. Miatas are not made for drifting. The geometry is too ideal for handling. You should look for something similar to a 240

nah the alignment is perfect

because its a daily drifter the stance has a slight reverse rake
And I have a custom exhaust
so the added area in front of the rear bumper + no bumper cut makes for a lot of turbulent air under the car and some noticeable lift

hoping the lip will deflect some of the air

The rubber boot and plastic ring are supposed to go under the upper part of the shifter, over the big ball. I never figured out how to do it, the stock shifter is definitely one piece and the plastic ring is too small to fit over either end.

>>16807941
Worn shift fork. You're not going to fix that short of a rebuild, and even then it'll take some welding and grinding to fix the problem. If it doesn't bother you, ignore it and if it does bother you, source a replacement transmission. Fortunately they're ridiculously cheap.

God fucking damn it. I knew I should have purchased from Moss Miata or 5XR. I went with Amazon instead because they had an actual Mazda dealer on there selling it. The kit I bought was a 1990-2005 which should have been the first red flag. I am assuming they tried to make a broad rebuild kit to target as many models as possible. I put it all together and it works beautifully but it pisses me off that I paid $123 for literally one plastic ring, a little washer, that little pad that slides over the shifter (which I also have no fucking clue if I fitted correctly. It was a bitch to get on and didn't look correct), and the boot which doesn't even fit correctly either. I guess none of it fucking matters in the end because it works great and cosmetically there is zero noticeable difference once everything is back together.
>>
>>16808450
I bought mine from 5X. You have the right parts, I just have no earthly idea how to install them. I never figured out how to take the original factory parts off the stock shifter either, I replaced the entire thing with a two-piece short shifter.
