I'm fucking sick of being a nurse.I have experience driving huge trucks/equipment in the Army and I always liked it. Is there any reason someone shouldn't switch careers to truck driving? I thought maybe driving some sort of delivery truck or trying to get into the USPS would be more simple, but I am open to suggestions.
>>
>>16725987
>I'm fucking sick of being a nurse
Why would you willingly try to move from earning $45/hr to minimum wage?
>>
>>16726003
I am an LPN, I make 16.40 an hour. Being a nurse is not worth the stress, just today I had an old woman I had to order an x-ray for because a nurse aide didn't hook up her wheelchair alarm and she fell(again), it won't be the first time she fractured a hip. Anyhow I thought truckers made a good wage, my brother always did/

Yeah after you grind those levels. As a rookie expect 2 years of hell living out of a cuckbox working 70hrs a week and earning the equivalent of min wage for the hours worked.
After your two years are up if you're lucky you might land a good gig doing something local.

Or if you're REALLY lucky right after you graduate you might find something local not making too much but the trade off being home every day.
Pepsi hires all the time, but that's a lot of physical labor. Some dude in this thread is making 20/hr driving a straight truck moving roofing materials. I'm in a similar range. Low workload. Decent wage. Home every day.

Shiieeettttt.

And here I was thinking of giving up forklift driving and being a comfy truckerfag. I guess at 25/h driving a forklift isn't so bad.
>>
>>16726098
>On a daily basis how often do you have to socialize with human beans?
Since I'm local, only when I load my truck and deliver it to customers. My truck has an aux port so I'm listening to muh vocaloids all day err day. Call customers for their delivery, drop that shit off, on to the next one. I'd say from my 40hr work week I spend 20-25/hr shitposting/sleeping.

By my calculations, 70hrs a week at minimum wage would be $508 if you worked 2 jobs, or $617 if you had one job that paid overtime, but there's no minimum wage job on the planet that would let you work 70hrs.
I just finished my first month averaging $1200 a week before taxes, how is that minimum wage?

>Parking brakes for parking?!

I no longer set my trailer brakes. Not sure what is going on with this trailer, but there is something in the emergency air line system in the trailer that must be blocking the air flow. When I release the brakes in the morning, it takes a couple minutes for the trailer brakes to release enough to actually roll. And then if I want to drop the trailer, I'll set the trailer brakes and when I take off the red air line 30sec later, there is still a ton of pressure built up in the trailer.

My tractor also has a bit of an air leak, so if I'm at a stop for more than 30min, the trailer brakes pop out anyway and I have to wait for them to release again while revving the engine to get 120psi in the hoses.

Had the truck written up for it like a month ago and they replaced the governor in the tractor which made no fucking difference at all. I don't think these guys even want to fix the stuff in the trailer since the bay trailers sit really low to the ground and lots of the air lines and wiring are run through the inside of the trailer rather than easy to access on the bottom like a regular box trailer.

>>
>>16726911
Yeah I was thinking they should maybe try and disconnect the trailer lines near the drum and blow some air through it to see what shoots out.

Our fleet department is totally fucked right now. They have two people working in all of fleet and they are supposed to service like 60 tractors and trailers plus forklifts and vans and pallet jacks and they have no time. And these two people have to cover Mon-Sat from 4:30am to 7:30pm.

Pepsi is fucking that one up tho. They want mechanics to have all these certs plus a Class A, pass some ridiculous assessment, and all for $25/hr. Even with the diesel mech certs and no Class A, you could make way more somewhere else. People aren't even applying for the jobs. And the "Head Mechanic" is this cool older dude with kids and shit and we always talk fishin and I feel bad for him because he's so stressed out since the job is literally impossible to do with 2 people.

So if you decide to go with USPS you don't actually need a CDL for a carrier position. The only major caveat with it is that for the first few years as a rural/city carrier assistant your technically "Part time" in that your only guaranteed work on Saturdays at 17.50 an hour, and you need to be on call 6 days a week if your routes main carrier can't make it. This makes it so it's difficult to hold down a second job, however the way the local postmaster around here tries to run it you are still apt to be working around 40 hours/week, but you still have the chance of only working one day.

The other thing to keep in mind is the actual hiring is all done by your entry test score your interviewer can only veto you outright rather than putting additional weight on your application, since your ex-mil, you should get 5 or 10 additional preference points, so as long as you do average on the exam, you should be fine.

According to most people I've talked to you either love the job or hate it and quit pretty fast and it's got a good health plan as well as decent opportunities for advancement, so it works out well for the long term.

Wut about metal? You talkin OTR or local? The landscapers come while I'm at work and while I'm getting home at 2:30pm, the cpm cucks still have 7hrs left on their 14, then it runs out at 9pm while they are in line at some shipper and blow 3hrs of their 10hr """rest""" period waiting for a dock to open up.

A few years back I thought OTR could be fun as a young, single guy but now that I learned a bit more how that shit actuallg works, I'm glad I'm local.

Have you tried just setting the trailer parking brakes?

>tfw good ol' Kenworth I'm in has like a 20min idle timer
That shit is annoying on our new Internationals where it shuts off after a minute or two. I've had those fucking trucks shut off on me multiple times while sitting at red lights. Especially in this KW with a little air leak, I like to start the truck when I first get out of a stop, then go throw my hand trucks on the back and put any credits-shells-trash I have in the trailer real quick and 2min later I got cold AC and 110psi and ready to roll. Fucking Intertrashionals will shut off in that short time.

I see some drivers from other companies that leave their trucks running for 20-30min+ while they are at stops and that seemed odd. I see a lot of Arizona drivers who do it in their Freightshakers. It must not have good AC and they obviously don't get a fuel bonus.

These things are programmable of course. If you had the same truck all the time and were on friendly terms with the shop you could get it programmed to suit but that won't work with you in different trucks all the time.

>trailer brakes only
Doesn't really work on my T680, it'll shut down after 20 minutes. Still, it's something to be tried.

>shut down in traffic
I've had one a later one of our T680's do that in a traffic jam. It shut down at 20 minutes in gear with the brakes released and wouldn't take no for an answer. I had to cycle the key. The older versions, though still the same model year, don't do that. They'll idle all day if both brakes are released and it's in gear as far as I can tell. I suppose I could get some chocks. Sorry, chalks, but then I'd get questions about idle percentage.

With the anti-idle shit, there was a big problem in the towing industry when that shit came set up from factory. Companies would be in the middle of standing up a truck when their own truck would die. Lots of trucks would go straight from a wreck right to the dealer to have it removed. Now its pretty much done at whoever upfits the chassis.

You're driving a goddamn flatbed, why put cargo in the cab?

Also, having trouble with an absurdly long RGN trailer currently, with a heavy and unsecured load on top. (Can't secure it, game doesn't let me)
When should I turn to minimise lateral forces and ensure the axles make it around the corner?
All three trailer axles steer, as do the front and rear ones on the tractor, if that helps.

It's not about other employees getting fired. It's the fact that he has a list of shit to do 1000 items long and everyday he can get like 5 of them done while 10 more get added to the list. And they haven't been able to hire anybody in months.

It's costing Pepsi more money in the long run too. They used to watch their hours so they didn't go over 40 and they didn't have to pay a bunch of OT. But now there is no choice. And when a driver breaks down out in the field, the fleet mechanics would go out there and try to fix the problem if possible. But now since there is only one person at a given time working in fleet, if a driver calls for something as simple as a dead battery, they have to call for roadside assistance or a tow. Sending a big wrecker capable of towing semi trucks isn't cheap. I asked about it the other day and it was $600 or $800 per tow. Plus they end up having to rent Penske trucks when too many trucks break down and the two mechanics can't fix them fast enough.

Looking to become a trucker. Planning on getting CDL at my local community college, then buying my own sleeper cab and doing long hauls for a few years until I get bored with it. I'm 27, was a welder for a long time, got into real estate now I collect passive income.

Is this not a wise idea? I've always said I would love to be a trucker for a few years, and after going on a 10,000 mile road trip on 4 wheels recently, I've decided I'm going to actually do it.
I've got the dosh for my own truck, seems like the best bet so I don't get jerked around too much.

Like TF always says, it's a good way to turn a large fortune into a smaller fortune, but if you're just doing it for fun I don't see what it could hurt.
>>
>>16734482
It's just better to work as a company driver for a bit so you know how the industry works and shit. Plus I don't think insurance companies will be very willing to insure your truck and $500k load when you have had a CDL for 2 weeks.

Idk tho, I'm local but never seen anybody go straight from school to owner without at least a year or two as a company driver.
>>

I can imagine that. $50k for a truck is nothing to sneeze at, but if I'm running it for a few years, surely I'll be well into the black by then.

>I don't think insurance companies will be very willing to insure your truck and $500k load when you have had a CDL for 2 weeks.
Not only that but brokers that actually have money and pay mostly on time won't work with o/o's that don't have at least a couple of years under their belts too. Although you want your own dedicated accounts, and don't really want to use brokers if you can help it, even they won't work with newbs since they want their shit on time and want some assurance you won't disappear after one or two trips.

I've heard stories of team drivers making upwards of that, but I think (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong) it is split evenly between both drivers. In her case, $55k.

I just don't see how $220k/year for one truck is realistic, no matter how many miles, but again, I may be wrong... I've always flew solo, and I think with my current company I'm doing good to make $60-$70k. (I have a little over a year of experience)

$220k is less than what EF made last year, and you have to consider the truck moves 24/7 basically instead of 10-11/5-6.
>>

>>16735904

>>
>>16734242
Once you've made your truck payments, initial purchase repairs, corrected those repairs, fixed everything you fucked up on the truck because you didn't know what you were doing, get your ass reamed during your new entrant audit, pay your taxes, and pay the $25,000 insurable policy to whoever has enough money to throw around at the geniuses that buy a truck out of CDL school, you may very well be in the red due to all the hiccups new drivers go through. Your first year you can really only expect around 50-60% efficiency in trip planning and completion. A third year driver with their shit together will be over 90%. If you're going to be pissing away 40-50% of your daily revenue tightening the loose nut between the steering wheel and the seat, why not let someone else pay for it?

>>16735748
I've been doing better than that solo for almost 4 years now, even running a 35 year old truck, or taking 2-3 months off a year. Cuckpermilers have to team to do it, but most O/O's can clear over $200k/year gross and net 40-60% of that.

I own all of my equipment outright, and have 6 years in the industry with 4 as an O/O pulling open deck freight. Dry van has consistently been the lowest paying freight for decades, so all the cuckpermilers you see making $25k a year couldn't have done much better even if they weren't employed by thieving jews.

Jumping into an established team, or any team for that matter, sounds abysmal, expecially with 0 experience.
>>
>>16735778
$220K GROSS is realistic.

It all depends on what you do. You aren't going to make shit doing coast to coast van freight for jew rates. But if you're doing high CPM short hauls, then you will make more while running less miles, which equals less overhead. It's not as exciting as traveling the country doing coast to coast runs, but it pays the bills.

My Uncle does O/O flatbed and hardly ever leaves a certain region. Pretty much anywhere in between Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Alabama. He doesn't travel west. He doesn't travel northeast. He doesn't travel south. He basically runs with the same shippers exclusively. It's consistent and pays up there. Not fun and exciting, but having a McMansion, Dodge Ram 3500, and 38' bay boat being a trucker is exciting.

Shit is strange tho because this girl is from another state and comes down here like a week at a time. Two years ago, I met her for the first time and barely even remember her. Then last year she came down and I saw her and she started talking to me and telling me "I remember you, you're from there and did this and this" and I had no clue who she was and I talked to her for like a minute and then realized I probably fucked up after I left and didn't know how to get ahold of her. But then this year I heard she was coming down and kinda made an effort to at least set it up where I would be able to talk to her for more than 2min and ended up at Starbucks forever and then her dad's house she has down here. We on dat Facebook friends status now so I hit her up to see when she is leaving.

But then when she leaves, I still got this other coffee girl I need to work on because I think that one is good to go as well.

Truck payments are for cucks are are okay with NETTING about the same per mile they'd make as a company driver.

Be a company driver for 2-4 years. Save every penny that you drop between your seat and blow up doll. Then buy an old used truck in cash. You should have an understanding of how to do all PM yourself and preferably how to work on diesel engines if you want to be an efficient owner operator. Paying some 19 year old fuck boy at a shop $300 to do something you can do for free in 30 minutes is for white people.

Its breddy bleak in the winter months for sure.

The area I live in is a lot of prairie and gentle rolling hills, so somewhat like North Dakota with more snowfall, but there are big ass evergreen forests and a few different picturesque mountain ranges within an hour or two's drive, so it's not so bad.

Strong beer and rye whiskey also help quiet the unceasing voices trying to wheedle me into doing violent, self destructive acts, for at least a little while anyways.

Always a buzz kill to be found.

Its called Silicosis. Basically it's the gradual buildup of silica quartz crystals in the lung from chronic exposure to frac sand dust or cement powder.

Its risk is mitigated by wearing a respirator, which Whiney's new employer states it provides on its website.

As long as Whiney wears his respirator with a good seal on his face, and replaces the cartridges every so often, he will be fine.

I find that odd, but okay. At my company we just had a spare key hooked onto the cord for the DEF tank cap. 3 keys total with the truck at all times: One key stays in the ignition 24/7/365. One key goes with the driver, and stays on the hood when parked in the yard. The backup key stays on the DEF cap to prevent lockouts. Of course, dispatch kept a fourth key, just in case.
>>
>>16752625
Lel most of our trucks have one key because they have been lost so many times. I locked myself out of the truck a couple years back and fleet just told me to call the locksmith.

>>
>>16752899
I think they have been legally required in the US for quite a few years now. But lots of them are mostly there for looks and aren't worth a damn when some cunt is texting and plows into a stopped trailer at 40mph.

Dude who I used to work with, we got hired on the same day and he was there about a year and a half and had two different accidents where he was making a right turn into a parking lot, had to stop and wait for somebody else to turn out before he could go in, and some dumbass not paying attention smashed into his trailer. The first one was a lady who tried to move left at the last second and ripped the whole passenger side of her car off. The second one, the dude was in the ICU for a few days and died.
>>
>>16752883

Self driving cars cannot handle anything other than clean dry pavement. A large number of shippers do not have paved lots. Driving anywhere other than the southern US means winter and snow exist. Rain cripples self-driving too. A large amount of new infrastructure would be needed for self-driving trucks to be more reliable than a driver - someone needs to fuel it, perform daily inspections, daily repairs, open and close the trailer doors for loading/unloading, clean the trailer interior, and do all the paperwork. This is especially true for trucks crossing the border. The fact is, driving may be the most time consuming part of the job, but there's a lot more to it than that, which a computer cannot do; and it can't even handle the driving that well either.

Most importantly, it's far cheaper to (not) pay a driver to do all of these things than it is to pay for them as services at the various locations the truck would need to be.

>some dumbass not paying attention smashed into his trailer
Honestly, I'm in favour of adding girders to trailer sides specifically to kill anyone driving into them.
My original comment was mostly making fun of the american automotive industry being 15-20 years behind europe.

Literally could not pay me enough to drive that on a road with traffic around.
