Had to drive a twinsteer daf and one of the steer calipers would bind up a little and drag on the rotor causing the same. To unbind it, you just went in reverse and then jammed on the brakes. Both of them they bought did the same thing.

These were new trucks with less than 20k km on it too.

It only happened intermittently and DAF couldn't replicate the problem so it didn't exist.

Paccar a shit.

If you go that route Prime has a decent training program if you can get a good trainer, some of these guys are lease operators trying to make their payments by hustling greenhorns.

It used to be you interviewed your trainers to see if you won't kill each other but now they assign trainees. I had a few lease guys try to hustle me but in the end I lucked out with a good trainer and I learned a lot and we had fun out there.

I have heard Schneider has a decent program too and I think they have a skidpad that they make you hoon around on to get the trailer to come around on you so you can learn what to do in the ice when that happens, I could be wrong.

Swift, CRST, C.R. England a shit

I will look at them to see if they have a training school and or a yard near me. I'm trying to deicide if I want to get a medical and take the cdl written at the DMV before I go to a school. Maybe it will give me a head start.
>>
>>16702010

If you come to Prime try to get your permit first. It's a self-study test and pretty easy to get. It will save you a lot of hassle when you get here. I passed mine perfect score the first time.

Prime has yards in Salt Lake City, Springfield and Pittston, PA. They will Greyhound-bus you to Springfield most likely which is an experience in and of itself especially if you live far away, I am convinced the reason they do that and don't fly you or let you drive there is to see how you function on minimal sleep. Do not ever be late for anything in class be 30min early. Late to class = late on load. I've watched people get walked out for showing up late to class and that ain't no shit they take it very seriously.

School isn't bad either and if you come to Prime with your CDL in hand from school they re-imburse you I think like half of your tuition and the rest you can write off on your taxes. Their training program isn't half bad and it's mostly hands-on in a truck after your first week. You will have to pass a physical on-site and they may try to con you into a sleep apnea study if you're fat (over 17" neck circumference) it's 600 bucks and you have to pay for it. If you aren't a hambeast you probably won't get it.

Good luck wherever you go.

Officially, during every pretrip.

Realistically, once a week or so, maybe two depending on work load.

This hot oiling job doesn't put on a lot of mileage since the area we cover is usually within three hours or so of the city I live in. The most I have put on in a day so far is around 225 miles.

My usual pretrip consists of checking the engine bay fluids, fan belt/s, fan blades, looking for obvious damage and leaks,

Firing it up and making sure there is oil pressure right away,

Check all the lights, decals, ifta sticker, CVIP decal, hazmat placards, plates, and stuff like that (especially if on a new to me unit)

Give the tires a bang with a four pound sledgehammer,

Check load securement (since my unit has lots of pinned up pipes and hoses), make sure we have all the tools and fittings we are supposed to have,

Jump in and do some quick in cab air brake tests, check the truck library (every so often, or if in a new unit) and get my paperwork ready.

I can do all that in two passes around, and barring any issues, am ready to go within a probably twenty, twenty five minutes.

>I have a fear of some tard pulling the pin on me.
It's not paranoia if you're right. Assholes do that in the middle of the night. It happened to another guy parked a few spaces down from me at the new Pilot in Orland, CA a few months ago:

He heard it happen in the night, but didn't think much of it. Morning comes, he tries to pull away, and the trailer drops off the fifth wheel onto the rear part of the tractor's frame. Fortunately it caught the frame, so he was able to get the landing gear cranked down, dump air bags, get the fifth wheel partially under, raise bags, lower gear more, dump bags again, get coupled and finally leave.

Moral of the story: ALWAYS do a visual check of both the handle, and the opening of the fifth wheel before move. Then do a tug test against the trailer service brakes; takes 5 seconds, could save you hours and paying for a crane, or your job. Or both.

In school now, I have a few questions?

>is it normal to be really nervous your first time driving a truck? Yesterday I was a nervous wreck. Today wasn't as bad but it's nerve wrecking
>how do I get a smoother take off? When I put it into 2ND gear and let off the clutch it's always a rough take off. Even when I try to put back the clutch slightly it still happens
>what's the best way to shift? I'm trying to get use to shifting into gear and giving it has right after but it's tough. What's the best rule of thumb?

>Visual of the pin
If you're going to physically check, you should take the little bit of extra time to do a visual of the jaws with a flashlight.

>>16713984

Yes being nervous is normal, and you'll get over it in time.

If second is rough, start off in first gear for a bit and see if makes your takeoffs any smoother. Depending on what you are driving in terms of weight, or if you are starting off on an upward incline, you may need the extra torque to start off easier. Try coming off the clutch slower over the first couple of inches of travel off the floor, then once you start to move forward you can increase how fast you move your foot off until you are fully clutched out. Like just about anything, it takes repetition to become smooth.

Are you shifting with the clutch, or without, and are you having issues upshifting, downshifting, or both?
>>
>>16714027
>do a visual of the jaws with a flashlight.
Yes, that's what I said; in different words because I can't remember the names for things.
>>
>>16713984
There's a limit to how smooth you can get. Like Oilfag said, use 1st or even Low to start if you're heavy or uphill. It will never be anywhere as smooth as a car, so don't try to compare them.
>>
>>16713984
The way they taught us (i.e. probably wrong) to shift is clutch neutral clutch shift into gear, making sure to rev appropriately. The speed in which you double shift is roughly the same speed as the finger snapping in the Addams Family theme song.
>>

>>16714094
The speed at which you need to shift to be smooth is going to depend on what kind of motor and manual transmission your truck is equipped with. In my experience (all with 18 speed Eaton Fullers bear in mind), Detroit and Cummins motors require a much faster shift cycle to be smoother than with a Cat motor, Cummins being the faster of the two. If I had to guess I would say its something to do with flywheel sizes, but don't know for sure.

Its hard to accurately describe, but I would figure a smooth, full gear position shift for a Cat is probably twice as long as with a Cummins, double clutching or floating.

Half shifts with a transmission that has a high and low position splitter like 13 and 18 speeds are going to be much faster still than a full gear position shift, like going from fifth high to sixth low, as opposed to fifth low to sixth low.

Looks like he's using diamond braided rope.

Nylon apparently absorbs too much water, and will stretch. And other synthetics aren't shock resistant enough to be used for as big of a tarp as a flatbedder uses. Hence paracord.

That clove hitch is probably better than the slipknot I was using.

In eleven years of Canadian oil and gas work, I have yet to see a truck equipped with anything else, aside from automatics.

I don't doubt there are other transmission setups to be found, but the 18 speed reigns supreme up here when it comes to logging and oil/gas work.

Anyone else scared of scales/inspection stations? One of the reasons I got into trucking is because of my crippling situational anxiety but the DOT is too much for me. As I approach the scale house im overcome with this feeling of dread and if it's open or I get pulled in I feel like my heart is going to explode.
>>
>>16716611
It's not spying, I don't know if you know what it is, but it's a "driver assistance" tool that monitors that road and can measure following distance and lane control, and alerts you if you follow to closely or tailgate.
Except it's a piece of shit that can't tell where the lines are at night, it slams on the brakes any time anyone ever merges in front of you, or sometimes thinks you're tailgating the person in the next lane.

Paracord is that meme shit preppers use. Shock cord is a bundle of elastic bands coated with braided fiber.

I enjoy driving. I work 12 hour shifts at a distribution center and have 4 days off and always go traveling for fishing. I live in Virginia and have traveled as far as Texas non stop.

Yeee boi.

You probably wouldn't mind truckin. You could always bring a bicycle but remember as a company you won't have much time aside from your 34hr restart once a week and you will be "On Duty" for 14hrs a day with a 10hr rest period. Also as a company cuck, you don't exactly get to choose where to stop. It's either a shipper/receiver or wherever your hours run out and you can't drive the truck when you are "Off Duty" with e-logs so you will be riding the bicycle or taking an Uber.

If you become owner-op after a couple years and own the truck and do paper logs, you will have much more freedom.

>>
>>16718303
No. 'Leasing' is where you pay them to drive their truck without actual ownership. You go where they want when they want.
You can be an owner/operator signed onto a big carrier, from what I can tell, and let them do a bunch of the work and pay you a pittance, but more of a pittance than their own drivers.
Or you could just go full o/o like truckerfag and literally only work when you want to.

Be very, very careful before you lease anything. You will need experience as a company cuck first for at least a year or two as well. And remember this- as a company cuck, if you are taking time off to do some other shit and aren't driving, you aren't making money. If you do the same as a lease-op or owner, you are losing money. So either way you gotta hustle if you want to enjoy the free time and still pay the bills.

Today was unusual.

>get unloaded in Charlotte at like 10 am
>PTL we need you to go to place A and drop your empty off
>now bobtail to place B and pick up this empty
>now take that empty to place C and drop it off
>now bobtail again to place D and pick this other empty up
>ok you can park now (right outside CHARLOTTE at 7 pm) your next load picks up at 5 pm tomorrow

It also took dispatch about an hour or two in between stops so I literally wasted all day running around and I'll be sitting all day tomorrow. I have no idea what was going on.
>>
>>16717617

nope. a call to a certain individual fixes that and Rob Low has an open door policy, my trainer had to sit him down and explain she was getting shit loads and paying to run her truck. she was never late, always on time and we ran hard almost always. he walked in and chewed her FM out in front of everyone.

worst comes to worse I can go home and get a local job but my bills are minimal out here so I'm just raking in the cash until I get tired of the OTR meat-grinder.

>>16718303
>>16718320

leasefag here. I don't pay to run my truck and do whatever the fuck I want. just so happens I want to drive. If I wanna go somewhere I get loaded in that direction and do it. At least with Prime the only rules really are you have to drop the trailer in one of their yards otherwise if you're paying the bills fuck it they don't care just be safe, stay in the black and make that truck payment. They give a fuck all what you do on your free time as long as those criteria are met. Fuck, I've done so much fucking cool shit on the road, thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster I didn't get cucked into company driving. Man fuck that, I probably drove half as many miles as most of you company guys last week and took home the same amount of money after expenses.

Leasing and o/o ain't for sissys though, you gotta have the ambition and the drive and actually want to work. If you're lazy stay in your company cuckshed.
>>
>>16718873

Now I know a bunch of you are gonna call me a faggot for leasing a truck but if this is what it takes to get the down payment for an O/O truck fuck it. ball til you fall.
>>
>>16718851

>If you're lazy stay in your company cuckshed.
>I probably drove half as many miles as most of you company guys last week

I'm not looking to pick a fight but aren't you contradicting yourself? You're saying you worked half as much as a company cuck last week right before claiming that O/Os and leasefags have to want to work.

So they can be loaded elsewhere, perhaps?
>>
>>16718949

Shippers need trailers to ship shit in and drivers don't always bring emptys

>>16718939

Not quite, if I was a compnay driver at .46cpm which is our standard rate I would have had a shit paycheck last week as I drove barely 2000 miles all week. Those loads that were dispatched to me were average $2 a mile. If I had my rathers I would have had more miles at those rates, but I'll take it because I pay my fuel and only had to fill up once last week.

It's not always like that though, sometimes you're running crazy miles. We make more money but we also have a lot more responsibility, and as a result, a lot more freedom. Being a prisoner of the highway sucks and I've always had a problem with authority. It's working out though.

I used to run a 50' section of rope through the F-rings on each side of the tarp before I got into multistop/LTL. Bungees are a lot faster if you're readjusting the tarp 3-6 times a load as freight comes off. High supply of trucks and low demand for them.

Similarly, the east coast has an absolute glut of trucks, so rates are shit there, too, much like Florida or Texas. Anywhere there's a border or an ocean will have terrible rates because they have service economies and limited options for getting out of that shit area. Brokers know this, shippers know this, and they can low ball all day long and loads get snapped up for $1/mi.

I have a couple question for you if you don't mind.

Over the last few years I've noticed the dually configuration for wheels being replaced by a single wider tire. Is this to save money or is there a safety reason behind it?

Why does the trailer on a 42' box for example squat down when the driver applies the brakes?
>>
>>16724184
>super singles

Ostensibly, they're to save money because they do have a lower rolling resistance than comparable duals, but in real life they end up costing more in huge up front costs, required minor repairs to the fender, suspension, and mudflap brackets when (not if) they blow; AND the cost to have a replacement tire replaced on the side of the road because once one blows, that's where the truck stops.

Most trailers in use now days ride on air suspension, which is tied into the air brake system. When wheel holders park their trucks, they pull the tractor and trailer valve like fucking morons and deplete both the brake and suspension pressure
>>
>>16724184
>wheels being replaced by a single wider tire
Super Singles and they're used for fuel economy. Two tires have less sidewall flex than four so that's less energy converted to heat rather than forward motion. That said, they suck for durability, will leave a truck stranded with a flat that might otherwise have been able to limp somewhere to get it fixed, and snow and ice traction is literally non existent.

Trailers squat on braking because if the brakes are working like they should most of the braking is being done by the trailer. This ensures the vehicle stops straight. If the tractor outbrakes the trailer sufficiently the trailer comes around in whats known as a jackknife. Further the trailer suspension design is such that brake torque actually pulls the trailer down. If you hold the trailer brakes and push back the trailer will rise in the rear.
>>
>>16724088
>I still don't know how I'm going to deal with going back there on Monday
Roll up to the gate, tell them to stop dicking people about, drop the hotel bill in their lap, and leave.

Pay is a real mix. Lots of highway haulers are paid per mile, lots of in town drivers are per hour, some guys that haul gravel are paid tonnes per km hauled, some loggers are paid per foot of wood, some are paid a percentage of what the truck earns, and some rare ones are salaried.
>>
>>16724265
>the trailer comes around in whats known as a jackknife
Nobody ever gets that right.
Jackknife is when the tractor comes around and hits the trailer - usually while backing.
Trailer swing is when the trailer comes around and hits the tractor - usually on snow or ice.

Different causes, but same result: driver probably got fired.

Which they need to because half the time they just completely block off entrances and parking lots in these little strip malls that would never be possible when the shops were open.
