What full face helmet to buy?

I don't know much about Arai or Shoei, so I don't know which category means what on Revzilla.

I want something with a lot of ventilation, quiet on the road, interior flip down shaded lens, lots of peripheral visibility, and easy to lock down/flip up visor.

I have an icon right now and it sucks.

sure but I figured we were talking about "quiet" helmets as in quieter than average, in which case most of them are low on vents, vents make noise for the most part, they just do, maybe I'm thinking on a different scale but if you want something with a LOT of ventilation like an AGV sport helmet it's not gonna be quiet.

XS400.jpg

Hi /dbt/ I don't usually post here, but a friend of mine bought a 1980 Yamaha XS400 for $900 awhile ago. The garage his bike was in caved in due to a huge snowstorm and did some damage.

The entire thing basically needs to be fixed up. Engine is seized now, throttle cable needs replacing, apparently a bunch of "electrical parts rotted", tires both got popped, and the engine is leaking oil. Oh and the killswitch was apparently superglued on and he tried to fix it and just ended up breaking it more.

My question is, think it's worth fixing up or should he just part it out and sell it? I was thinking about giving him a few hundred bucks for it and fixing it up myself, but I have no experience with bikes, I've only ever worked on my cars. My goal this year was to get a bike and learn to ride and figured this may be a good spot to start.

Any help is appreciated, also sorry if I should have just made a new thread for this.

Arai is top tier helmet. Great materials, great fitment for all headshapes, great ventilation.

Drop down shield is dogshit safety wise because they need to recess the foam liner that protects your brain to make room for the shield. Wouldn't really recommend it because if you can't carry around a shield and swap it out then you're a retard. Also wear earplugs when you ride.

Go try on helmets, see which ones fit best. Arai and Shoei are best. HJC and AGV would be behind them. Only the higher end models though.

No, I literally called/went into every bike shop in my town today and they didn't have anything, and didn't even know what brands they carried. The next set of motorcycle shops is 40+ minutes east or west of my town. Just how it is here. Good news is, if I go east for about 1.5 hrs, I am in a military base town, which always has fully stocked bike shops.

Schuberth is dogshit. Quality seems cheesy, and their "quiet" helmets whistle loud as hell because of those funky faceshields with the spoilers on them. Schuberth fix is to put fuzzy side of velcro between shield and fiberglass to keep whistling down.

Also my Corsair X is quiet as fuck, with all vents open. I wear earplugs but everyone should anyways.
>>
>>16724689
Hard to say

That style of bike is popular right now because of "Cafe Racer" culture and hipsters, at least in America.
This could be a good thing, usually, but it means replacement parts are going to be in higher demand than usual and can be expensive.

You may be better off trying to buy it from him for as cheap as you can and parting it out yourself, sell the seat, swingarm, exhaust, fenders, headlights gas tank etc.

I don't speak the language here, there are dealerships that speak english and will do all the paperwork in order to get a sale.

the price difference between dealerships and dealing with other foreigners isn't very big here and dealership bikes are all 100% working whilst foreigners tend to ruin their bikes.

The 2017 duke has bluetooth as part of it's tablet-as-a-dashboard, split-function cartridge forks (one leg compression dampening, one leg rebound), ride by wire, traction modes, etc.

I haven't been able to find out if it has programmable wheely-mode yet like the R-1. That would be cool, and usually comes with fly-by-wire.

I live in moreno valley and I went 80 miles into nicer places to get my fz8, be patient and wait for the perfect deal/bike to pop up. It's worth it.

Sometime in the Nineties, bike switched from bias-ply tires to Radial tires. Radials have far more grip than Bias tires, plus more directional stability, etc. They use different size rims so you can't just put radials on an old bike.

Around the same time, brakes got MUCH better. So all around a better, safer deal.

As I recall, it was just about 1990... It's easy to spot, bias tires are tall and thin, radials are low-profile and fat.

Mind you, there are bikes made today that run Bias, and the bias tires made today are very good, much better than in the Eighties. The point I am trying to make is that the bikes from 1990 on are much safer and better handling than the Eighties, and although I love my gs450 and KZ1000, my old SV650 and current Duke are much more stable, easier to ride, easier to stop, and so on.

Also, the mid-nineties was something of a golden age of Japanese sportbikes.

The list price they have is $4200. What does /dbt/ think I should do?

It's pretty clear my helmet's a bit too round, but it's not so massively I noticed until I had a better idea what I was looking for. To be honest I probably would have never noticed if I wasn't looking for a second ECE/Snell labeled helmet (Yurop IS17 is ECE but that doesn't do me any good) The immediately logical option was the FG17 because parts of it are outright identical but that made me start checking fit for a baseline and it's not as great as I'd thought it was for the last 10 months.

>internal sun visor is detrimental to safety
why is this so?
wouldn't they just make the cavity for the visor in the outer shell for the helmet and use a normal foam liner underneath?
why would they cut out the protective area instead of just adding a box to the outer shell to store the visor
isn't that why the helmets with an internal visor seem to have a bulge on the front?

All I know is the only helmet with a flip down visor that meets SNELL is arai who have an external flip down visor.

I also know that I don't use my ISV that much whatsoever because it doesn't fill your whole vision on most helmets and has a pissweak tint generally so I'd rather save the weight on my neck and get the extra safety of a helmet with none in it soon as it's deadweight to me anyway.
>>
>>16725917
Hardly any helmets make a bulge on the outside of the helmet to accept the shield. Only ones I can think off the top of my head are Shoei and Icon just from looks.

There is a reason that they are not Snell approved. Most of the helmets with a internal shield require a recess to accommodate the shield. Shoei is really the exception because they have a bulge to allow the shield to sit without making a lesser amount of EPS liner.

The majority of helmets reduce the amount of EPS to accommodate the shield. This allows lesser protection of your brain in an accident and also disbars the helmet from snell testing because of the configuration.

Saving this for later; What kind of dirt skills apply to other bikes?
I'm thinking of dicking around the state forests this summer on my little nighthawk, wanted to try out a couple kinds of riding before deciding on an upgrade (ADV, sport, etc)
I know to go excessively slow on dual springs, and that's about it.
Also, will regular cruiser tires be fine on easy trails? I'd prefer not to die in the cascade hills...

>What kind of dirt skills apply to other bikes
Most dirt skills apply to street riding. Most importantly to riding in inclement weather and low traction conditions.

Street tires are fine on most forest roads but anything above that the traction of at least a semi-knobby tire is ideal. If you venture to the dirt on your street tires just be very conscious of your throttle input

so true. Every time I've went riding with a girl that said they were good we spent more time off the bikes than on them. Pretty sure most just do it for the instagram photos tbqh.

There's probably like 5% that are good but I've never seen them.

New throttle cables, new gas filter, carb leak fixed, fairings repaired with CF and brand new medium conti race attack on the front. That on top of all the previous crash damage repair. Bike is performing 10/10 now.

Anyone use anything other/better than Autosol? This fucking VTR is hard to keep shiney.

And if the anon who asked about fuel consumption is lurking it is still averaging about 230km per tank doing normal commuting to and from work.

Better than the old Z900 by A LOT.
>>
>>16724606
>I just don't understand the appeal of plastic bikes.

Performance. Something HDs don't do. A metal fairing makes no sense on anything except some collectible restored one-off ancient road racer built before dustbin fairings were banned by race rules. Those live in museums.

The difference on HDs is the steel fenders and fuel tank, with side covers on some. That's not a lot of parts and many other bikes have metal fuel tanks and perhaps the fenders. Harley fairings are ABS plastic like everyone else.

Only mechanics are qualified to evaluate motorcycle quality in detail. Riders are just spectators who sit on the machine. HD is not exceptional. What you are buying is the particular style and access to the enormous aftermarket for support. No other aftermarket comes close due to HD going many years between engine family changes (which owners prefer). The ability to customize along with the steel frame (easy to weld) means used HDs stay practical to keep on the road in any flavor you care to make of them.

HD engine simplicity is a plus. They are easy to maintain and parts are plentiful and relatively cheap. If you want to keep one machine for thirty, forty or fifty years they're a good choice.

The Twin Cam is a bean counter engine but if you want to pay the proverbial tax you can sort that out. Most HD owners are old boomers who don't put any miles on them. The Polaris Indian has a much better engine but Polaris hasn't refined their product quite so much as HD.

AMF rescued the company from it's incompetent family managers who ran it into the ground, then the same AMF management who tried to produce too many bikes and slashed quality bought out the company from AMF, bought Japanese production machinery, and produced the outstanding Evolution engines. HDs propaganda machine doesn't mention it as it happened and everyone who was alive then is so old we'll all be dead in a week or two.

>>16724634
Pretty easy, but take pics of wiring and cable routing. I punch holes in a piece of cardboard for convenient hardware storage.
See your FACTORY service manual (you can usually download something close, but when I keep a bike I buy the hard copy manual and it doesn't go when I sell the bike).

It's junk and while some "cafe" fags who've no idea what legit cafe racers are build them, 400s aren't valuable.

Not worth fixing unless you've done a lot of that work, but you could give him a hundred bucks if it has a clear title then use it for mechanic training. Buy something else to ride. An expendable training aid is nice to learn to wrench on.

Tip that matters if you do. Blow out the spark plug area with compressed air to ensure no crumbs enter the engine when you pull the plug.
