i've got a first gen S10 2wd 5-speed with the 2.8

I kind of want to take it apart, and put it back together (there's a lot wrong with it) is there anything I should do that'd be more worth while with minimal tools?

I don't really want to do an engine swap, but could I get some umph out of the 2.8 if I had to take it apart all the way to the heads?

how much work an I do to an engine while it's still in the truck?

Slightly loose gas line that went to the carb. The gas that leaked out of the line fell directly into the exhaust manifold. When the engine has been running for a period of time and there's a lot of under hood temps. When I cranked the motor with the hood closed smoke started pouring out.

My Dad and my Grandpa both worked at Chrysler so i guess for this board i technically am.
I buy murican
That said, buy HF flux core welder yes/no
>>
>>16723111
No. The quality of the weld between HF and an actual name brand flux core wire is astounding. Lincoln electric isn't much more and I've had very good results with that shit vs HF.

>>16723096
Yeah, they really are. I like how they weasel around the term PLASTIC by using COMPOSITE, BRUH. Their sockets are good though, their wrenches are pretty shit. They come precorroded right out of the package and I've already snapped the box end off and bent the open end to shit on one of them.
>>
>>16723139
>No. The quality of the weld between HF and an actual name brand flux core wire is astounding.
Well it's technically not Harbor Freight brand but Chicago Electric.
I don't know if they're one in the same but I'm also on a limited budget.
Besides flux core naturally produces nasty looking welds anyway
>>
>>16723152
Consider looking for a better, used welder on Craigslist. I used one of the harbor freight ones to build a go kart in highschool and it was pure shit compared to the Miller MIG we had in autoshop
>>
>>16723152
Yeah, chicago electric is the in house brand of HF, but i thought you were talking about their wire and not their welders. Their welders are alright if you use a good wire with them. On my old HF welder you have to use a C-clamp on the wire feeder or it doesn't grab the wire. I'm sure it's not like that on all of them, more of a quality control issue than anything else, i think. They're good starter welders but i wouldn't want to be doing a job with one.

>>
>>16724085
No longer needed to be smog tested but enjoyed by at least ten people in my book.
or around 25 years at least.
>>
>>16724085
Legally, pretty much anything over 25-30 years old. But it's up to interpretation. A 1988 Toyota Camry SE isn't a classic, but a 95 Toyota Celica gt4 will be.

Already posted this in QTDDTOT, ( >>16727618 )but copying here because it was suggested and actually isn't an awful idea.

Do any of you have any experience with chemical rust removers like https://www.theruststore.com/Rust-Release-SuperGel-P224C0.aspx ? If so, how well did it really work?

I'm looking at the underside of a 30 year old truck that I got from a relative up north where the snow and salt and time have taken their toll. Pic related, unfortunately.
>>
>>16727705
those dollies are awesome, where can i pick them up?
>>
>>16727719
That's actually not bad for a 30 year old truck that had to contend with road salts. Do a quick underside scrubbing and try to remove as much dirt, rust and grease as possible, the better job you do the better the paint will stick. Try buying spraycan undercoating, And get the quick dry version. I've found that shit works pretty well even on moving stuff like suspension parts. It'll stick to pretty much anything.
>>
>>16727705
That poor Fury. It must be terribly embarrassed.
>>
>>16727747
It definitely could be worse, that's for sure. You've pretty much hit the nail on the head for what I intend to do in general, though. I actually bought several cans of oven cleaner for the express purpose of coating as much shit as I can reach underneath with it, letting it soak for a while, and then washing it all off to cut as much grease as I can with a minimum amount of effort.
>>
>>16727741
we got em at harbor freight.
>>16727750
It's actually a coronet, Basically the same shit though. Chrysler loves reusing designs all across the board, even today.
>>
>>16727705
That body style is sexual
>>
>>16727766
>>16727747
To add to this because I'm an idiot and completely forgot, there ARE a few spots where the rust is significantly worse. You'll notice in the picture that there's no exhaust after the second cat. Mostly because the tail pipe fell off within a couple weeks of me getting the truck, followed a couple months after by the muffler deciding to go its own way while I was on the highway. I hacked off what was left of the pipe so it was clean, and haven't regretted it once. It sounds fucking amazing right now.

Honestly, no. The only way you're gonna get any power at all would be to swap. I have the manual from JTR, it's pretty involved. I have the molasses 2.5 4 cylinder in my '90, but it's my beater and I decided it wouldn't be worth the time and money because of everything else I'd have to fix along the way. I'd say that rebuilding your 2.8 would be a decent experience to learn how to do it if you've never done it before. You could do the top end with it still in the truck, but for bottom end you'd have to pull the engine.

If it was just a short in the 12v it still wouldn't be that hard. The problem is most parasitic draws on modern cars are caused by bad modules. Since there's often 8-10 modules on one CAN it's very difficult to diagnose draws on these without either a breakout box or known good modules. On the newest cars the modules are permanently programmed to each car, so you can't get a used one from the junkyard, and even if you had a new one you would need the dealership to program it. We are definitely in an era where people will no longer be able to fix cars in their garage, but it's only the last few years and there's still some non luxury cars that aren't too bad (but not for long).

Ehhh.. The 59 Buick needs new rubber seals for the doors and windows and such.. Is it hard or expensive to seal up these cars? The seller says he stores it inside, but I don't have a dry place to keep it for now.. So it would have to sit out in the elements..

Actually yes, it will be almost impossible to get electronics fixed for very long after a car is produced. Even today it's almost impossible to get a Teves Mark II ABS system fixed and those are only 30 years old. Right now I'm dealing with a PCM failure on a 2000 Lincoln LS. Central processor quit so I had to source a rebuilt PCM and now it has to go to the dealer so that they can use dealer-only diagnostic equipment to open the security center in order to introduce the new PCM to the PATS module and get them to play nice with each other. This is also going to require two new transponder keys too. You think a dealer going to have the shit around to do this in 2050 or 2060? And that's only a crummy Ford, just think of the shit you'd have to go through with a BMW or something.

Hey guys, I have a question!

I was talking to someone about putting a turbo or a supercharger in a classic car, and he talked to me about something called a forced-induction carburetor, and said that you can turbo a naturally aspirated engine with one.

Do you guys have any experience with that sort of stuff? Would it be "looked down upon" for putting a turbo in a vintage car? Do any of you know where I'd be able to find a forced induction carb? I have no experience with that sort of stuff and don't even know what I'm looking for.

'72 Maverick, and I didn't say the engine it has in it right now because I'm going to be swapping it soon anyways.
If you'd like to know, it currently has a Falcon 6 250 CI 6 Cylinder and only made about 140 horsepower new, but because its the original engine, I'm sure it's lost quite a bit.
I'm going to be putting a '71 302 in there as soon as I can buy one.

I'm not sure exact years, but i know earlier mavericks had 4 lug suspensions for straight sixes and 5 lug for v8's, You might wanna check up and count how many lug nuts are holding your tires on. you should look into converting to 5 lug suspension atleast in the front if you've got 4 lugs. It's only a little bit dangerous to be putting a v8 with any respectable power into a car with suspension set up for a straight 6.

BTW, that straight six made around 140hp at the flywheel with no accessories on the engine. To the wheels it's more like 80-90hp.
>>
>>16734459
>You might wanna check up and count how many lug nuts are holding your tires on
Yeah, it's 4 lug. I have the parts to do it, I just don't want to start messing with stuff until I actually get the motor, you know? And I may just decide to build another Maverick so I wont be on such a time crunch when I decide to build it.

>BTW, that straight six made around 140hp at the flywheel with no accessories on the engine. To the wheels it's more like 80-90hp.
That has to do with the different horsepower ratings, right? Like net vs gross? Because I think those changed in '71, I think it might be 140 to the wheels, but I could completely be wrong.

Are carb spacers a meme, or do they actually produce measurable performance gains?
>>
>>16734504
>net vs gross
Yep, I guess they did switch over by 72, You might wanna check out automobile catalog. It has alot of interesting shit.

http://www.automobile-catalog.com/car/1972/840770/ford_maverick_2-door_sedan_250_six_cruise-o-matic.html

by the way, you only need to use blow through carbs with turbochargers or centrifugal/paxton/any other of the same style superchargers. A regular old school blower you won't need any type of special carb, as they mount on top and the carbs aren't seeing any positive pressure whatsoever.

if you've got the money then i'd say go for it, but make sure you don't skimp on the rest of the engine. You have to build a motor around boost or N/A. You can't go strapping a supercharger or turbo onto a hot N/A motor and expect it to work. Most of the time you'll ping the engine to death, spin a bearing, throw a rod, or destroy a piston because of improper ring gap for boost.

>>16734537
They actually produce measure performance gains on certain engines and setups. I don't know the exact theory behind them, but it has something to do with allowing the air and fuel to mix better, I'm sure turbulence has something to do with it too

That's pretty cool. What I'd it valued at, and does it have a VIN or prototype VIN?
>>
>>16734537
Ford found on the 289's in the mid Sixties that a one inch spacer made better power because it gave the air/fuel mix time to turn into the port maintaining better velocity and homogeneity , rather than bouncing off the floor of the manifold plenum with the fuel washing out on the floor.

Needless to say this is a function of manifold design and a manifold with a taller plenum and a straighter shot down into the ports would benefit less than one that too short and has sharp turns because it has to fit under a low hood. Also spacers can have a minor effect on pulse tuning if the port length is almost right and a little bit longer would help but that's only in a fairly narrow rpm range of course.

So my 5.3 is just about wrapped up but I have a problem

The starter is on fucking Struggle Street and barely cranks. I just used jumper cables and connected them to the battery in my car.

Could it just be the jumper cables are shit or too long?
>>
>>16736588
>Could it just be the jumper cables are shit or too long?

Never heard of bad jumper cables and no they arent too long. Did you check the voltage on your problem battery?
>>
>>16736635
I used another battery in my dad's truck and it was the same issue, both batteries are fine. I also pulled the starter and it did all the things a starter does when I connected it to the battery.

Either the cables are shit or I have bigger problems, I'm not trying to fire it, just crank it with the starter. The harness isn't even plugged into the computer

I had this problem once.

Remember kids...it's bad if you start the car without remembering to tighten down all the fuel lines after rebuilding your fuel system.

Sorry no pics of the fire extinguisher aftermath. Was too busy assessing the damage. In the end it only claimed a couple vacuum hoses and a lot of powder to clean out. If you have a classic car...keep a fire extinguisher inside where you can quickly get to it.

Now unrelated to fires...

When I got my delorean one of the first things I did was strip the red paint off to assess if there was any damage and start getting it back to a proper finish. Lo and behold the doors and rear panels were in bad shape.

I managed to source some good used replacements from DMC Midwest and proceeded to swap em out.

A word of wisdom though...without the strut or torsion bar delorean doors weigh a fucking ton and hurt like hell if you accidentally kick out the support during reinstallation.

Does /ccg/ think the days of "finding" desirable muscle cars are over?

I want to say yes, becaus a lot of boomers browse craigslist every minute of the day, and have been running newspaper ads for years. They hoard all the rare and desirable cars, which will sit and rot away because the lazy fucks will never restore them. Meanwhile, they chop all the lesser-optioned cars to pieces for parts to fix their garbage. But for some reason, they consider the middle of the woods a good place to store those parts, so they'll disintegrate, too.

On the other hand, I like to think there's some hope. Most of them should be dying in the next 10-20 years, so there will be plenty of huge car collections dumped off on clueless soccer moms who don't know about muh numbers matching or muh $100K vin digits. That, or the retarded boy racer great-grandson.

>>
>>16738816
If you do that, you will need to run a return line to the tank. Consider getting an auxiliary fitech command center. You can run your fuel system from your mechanical pump to the command center, and the command center directly to the TBI unit. Sadly I don't think you can just run a standalone pump.

>>16738871
Of course you can. I found my truck under a tree. They made a lot of muscle cars. Pounding the pavement will get you a result and barn finds will airways happen

>>16739715
I'm not saying they're no longer there. What I worry about is a combination of boomer chop-shop tactics reducing the numbers of affordable, lower-trim, poorly-optioned cars to near extinction and things like Barrett Jackson pushing the prices of the remaining cars through the roof, since now everyone "knows what they got".

All I want is a cheap '68-70 Mopar.
>>
>>16739941
You're outnumbered bud. Most people like the 2 doors more than the 4 doors. You're not entitled to find the car you want in the condition you want for the price you want. Nobody in this thread bought their first choice in car for the price they wanted, with all the options they wanted in the condition they wanted. They either ponied up the cash or compromised somewhere. It's always been like this. The only way you get the car you want is by building it or buying it new. We don't have the second option.

>>
>>16740168
You must have misread that. I didn't say I prefer all those shitty options. Those are just the things that push these cars' values down enough to make them reasonably affordable.

I literally said all I want is a cheap '68-70 Mopar. If I could just find a stripped out Charger, Challenger, Super Bee, etc. within my budget, I'd have no trouble nickel & dime-ing it into the car I want. Matching numbers mean nothing to me.

if I can find something cheap, would a 60s-70s-era car be a good place to start if I have zero experience wrenching on the actual guts of a car?
the most intensive thing I've ever done is replacing the cam position sensor on my old Volvo S80 (which is now dead because the timing belt needs a replacement and it'd cost more than the car's value)
Ideally I'd want a sofa, but for my very first project I guess it'd be better to just take what I can get for $500 or so

Any old car like this will have nothing in the way of sensors etc.
It's all mechanical.
If you want a good place to start to learn, go for something with a 350 SBC.
They're dirt cheap, the aftermarket is probably the biggest in the world and they're stupid simple.
