Sup, 21 year old europoor and complete bike noob here.
Not sure if this is the right place to ask since I usually don't enter these threads but what the hell.
So since insurance for young people is fucking retarded for cars that aren't 90hp econoboxes like the one I own I was thinking of getting my bike license and buying one of these, a kawasaki w800.
How bad of an idea is this as a first bike?
Will i end up killing myself?
Cost/maintenance is not a problem if this is involved but I've read these are basically bulletproof.
>>
>>16715351
Which country?
It is a A2 bike, so should be no problem as a starter bike, just check the reliability and how easy to service it is.
>>
>>16715360
Belgium, and I read service is really easy.
As I said I'm a complete noob so just asking to see if there's stuff I should know before diving in head first.

>Riders just as well
Aside from the /soul & passion/ argument italian bikes do ride better than others
Cue that one article about a Kawasaki (i think) racer saying how much better the duc was in the corners because it flexed
>>
>>16715374
I advise you to take lessons and ask those things to your instructor, they normally know that shit.

But if the w800 is reliable and easy to maintain, why not? Although I would advise buying cheap used, as you have a huge risk damaging it.
>>
>>16715388
Did it flex like spaghetti?

It's fusilli now.

To all the sports bike owners...
Do you tuck when you ride in the twisties? As in tuck when cornering? I've been trying it lately and it feels fun although not sure if it's the best way.

I'm gonna get one, I struggled to find something to upgrade to from my F800R, and looked at every other brand first.

Test rode bikes from victory, Indian, ducati, triumph, Yamaha, mv Augusta, but then rode a R1200R, the wide lazy powerband with a bit more top end than the cruisers is just a good fit for me and how I ride.

>>
>>16715410
wtf do you mean tuck when cornering?
as in leaning like you are supposed to?
why is this exclusive to sport bikes?
>>
>>16715440
D-ESA is great
>>
>>16715440
He could get an older 1200r with the paralever system
>>
>>16715445
Well I mean getting right under the windshield then leaning off the bike as opposed to sitting mostly upright and leaning off the bike. I've been riding a naked for many years and it's just the way I'm used to it.
>>
>>16715410
>>16715445
I guess I should really be asking:
If you have a sports bike (naturally leaned forward riding position) how often are you tucking beneath the windshield as you ride.

I hardly see anyone around tucking unless they're trying to go real fast even though it seems it should be more efficient in every way except for wheelies and braking.
>>
>>16715457
so you are saying you used to lean like pic but now you are actually getting your head down?
>>
>>16715461
oh so you mean just like in general, it is harder to change direction while you have your head/body low
>>
>>16715431
How is the handling and weight? I only ever sat on one standing still and it was a fucking heavy.
>>
>>16715464
No, not twisted like that I meant having your torso leaning forward (as in tucked under the shield) compared to sitting upright. Both ways the whole body is leans over the bike looking front/rear on but from the side I'm comparing angle of torso as upright or leaned forward front to back. I am fairly tall and have long arms so maybe it isn't usual to do both positions easily.
I never bothered to lean forward more because it isn't a natural position when riding a naked with high bars.

>>16715472
I think it's easier on a sports bike handlebars to steer when tucked and hugging the tank but definitely harder to move to the other side of the bike when changing to lean off the bike into another corner, but then again I am experimenting with my riding style so it might just need practice.
>>
>>16715473
Not him, but I have ridden a R65, R1150R Rockster, R1150GS and a R1200GSA.

They are heavy bikes, but you can throw them around on the road. Very easy to ride. The torque and engine braking will take getting used to.

I've just bought an SJ4000, probably gonna arrive next week.

Is the mount for the helmet already inside?

Is there anything useful I need to know? I didn't buy other batteries yet. Also what good use can I make of it apart from using it for evidence (just the other day some stupid girl pulled out in front of my from a stop on my right) and filming my shit riding?
>>
>>16715497
Should come with a mount.
60FPS mode is a meme.
Buy backup batteries if you want to film more than around 90 minutes.
Use the cyclic recording function.
Use the option that auto-splits the videos into 10 minute clips, easier to deal with.
>Also what good use can I make of it
Make boring webms for us. Hoon more.
>>
>>16715506
>60FPS mode is a meme.
I know, they're artificially created by doubling the frames.

What's the alternative to the cyclic function? What if I were riding on a twisty road 2 hours ago and now I'm in the city and wanna film something, won't the touge get overwritten?

If I use the 10 minutes clips option what is the gap between the clips, or is the new recording immediate?
>>
>>16715493
Shh, don't spoil my anonymity.
>>
>>16715516
Shit only gets overwritten when the card is full. If you don't use the function, you have to change cards anyway if you want to record new stuff so IMO there's no reason not to use it.

There's a negative gap as far as I remember, i.e. the last frame(s) of the old clip are the first frame(s) of the new one.

>>16715519
Gotcha.
>>
>>16715495
My problem is coordinating the timing in fast consecutive turns when leaning forward I get thrown off because I end up just leaning mostly upright just from habit. After looking at lots of pictures of racers I suppose leaning forward is the right way and it makes sense considering lowering the mass to the road. Leg day to me is my church mass I think lots of deadlifting is why I find it easy to ride long distance on a sportbike without leaning on the bars a lot and I recommend it to any rider.

I still wonder why I never seen anybody tuck when cruising on the highway, I could almost fall asleep leaning on the tank and wind noise doesn't even exist. I suppose it looks strange when you're not riding fast.
>>
>Guy selling an RC51 put a larger rear sprocket on it for more torque
Is that really necessary? 1000cc sport vtwin torque is insane in the first place..
>>
>>16715521
>Shit only gets overwritten when the card is full
How long are we talking?
I got the 32GB card for it.
>>
>>16715531
Lol, I do 3rd gear power wheelies on my liter twin, any more torque is just for memes
>>
>>16715534
Depends on your settings, I don't remember. Longer than your battery will last, for sure.
>>
>>16715531
If you only ride for fun how often do you really see that bikes top speed? If you aren't sitting on a highway a lot it's nicer to reach a lower top speed quicker than being capable of massive speeds but need more space and time to reach it, at least that's what I value. Just be sure your throttle control is up to scratch...
>>
>>16715540
Fair enough, thanks.

I was thinking I could go check out the camping place fro SEM and film it maybe. Problem is if my shit notebook can handle video editing.
>>
>>16715541
Yeah vtwins already have comparably low top speed though. Adding a larger rear sprocket to an rc51 probably puts it at like 230 kmh top speed and more torque than you can actually utilize.
>>
>>16715547
>video editing
If all you want to do is make boring webms all you need is ffmpeg.

>>16715410
yep, keep it nice and as low as possible, if you're upright you really just can't be leaning that far off, I have long arms too but there's a limit, being low and off keeps your arms nice and gently bent which is good, I try and aim to have my arm touching down onto the top of the tank generally.

I have a R3 and anyone that asks me what beginner sport bike is best, I say o get a Ninja 300.

I like the styling of the R3 but the Ninja is objectively better.
>>
>>16715473
Handles really well, confidence inspiring is how I'd describe it. I was taking corners faster without even trying to, it just wanted to go.
>>
>>16715575
I put a knee down occasionally with the style I've been using so far but I will try changing up my positioning and maybe it will become something usual. It just feels a lot different moving from a very upright seated bike to a sportbike and I've been riding that way for a few year I never really bothered getting off the seat or tucking until now but I do like it, I just wasn't too sure how aggressively I should tuck down.

>>16715584
I've heard that before but the thing is I would be leaning more forward than outward to get to the mirrors on this bike it would cross me up, they're pretty useless.

decent opinions dbt thanks
>>
>>16715599
Better than sitting on a bike in traffic because you are in a no-filtering country and stuck in a traffic jam in a (fair) high police activity area.

>>
>>16715619
I learned to ride twisties and track with clip ons, to me the bike just feels much more stable and I feel more comfortable in the corners when I'm leaned off a lot.

If you want to practice it just take your favourite twisties for a few laps nice and slow and exaggerate the body position, then when you wanna start going faster again the body position will be natural.

Just remember you move the bum off before you brake and before you turn in, and if you have two right hand corners in a row don't bother returning to the middle.

helmets with ISV are generally actually less safe than helmets without and I don't really use mine if I'm honest.

They're a feature that's better on paper than they are in real life for me, generally the tint on them is so weak it's practically worthless.

I prefer to just have a nice full iridium tinted visor on, my next helmet will be no ISV.
>>
>>16715846
FG-ST is only sold in Europe, we didn't know it exists. It's also way more expensive than an IS17 (which has the same visor) and barely cheaper than an RPHA-ST so why -does- it exist?
>>
>>16715863
It's glass fiber.
>>16715866
Well I prefer weak tinted ones because they protect me from the sun and I can still see the road well, which is the most important thing for me.
>>16715870
I'm a euro and no, it's not, it costs €230, around €30-40 more, which is just about the money a tinted visor costs, so it's basically the same price.

So the question is, anyone know a solid 125 I can ride that isn't retardedly expensive for a 125?

Someone post good bike feelings. I'm in the mood for good bike feelings/occurrences

>Didn't ride baiku for a month or so, but kept petcock off, center stand, etc.
>Try to turn it on, have problems. Battery dead, so I jump it.
>Still have problems, getting worse, bike barely starts if it does.
>Had carb clogging problems in the past and had to have pro work done on it (V4 too)
>Wait two bikeless days agonizing over myself, thinking I murdered my baiku
>Use some seafoam I had lying around and 2 gallons of premium gas. Bike starts up and has no problems operating whatsoever.

I've started riding my bike to work the past few days, and it's great. I go to work very early in the morning, so the streets are practically empty and quiet. It's very relaxing and enjoyable.

I hope you all have great rides today.
>>
>>16716174
My Kawasaki has been sitting for like 6 months. I drained the tank before I left it and put sea foam in the gas. Tried starting it the other day and it fired, but would either start revving high if I left the choke on, or die if I closed it too much. I'm just going to dump that fuel into my truck and replace it with some premium. It's still in the freezing temps here, and that bike has never liked cold weather

The answer depends on the BMW! BMW owners clubs are very useful. Read the forums.

Get the motherfucking Robert Bentley factory service manual. (You can find many for free download as .pdfs with some searching, but buy if you can't find the SPECIFIC one for YOUR bike).

I've worked on the later Oilheads and greatly prefer the iconic simplicity of the earlier Airheads. R65Anons is an example Airhead.

BMW has a very small aftermarket but many smart owners and good owners clubs make up for a lot of that.

Oilhead and K-bike BMWs are mostly bought by fashionistas who sell them at low mileages. If you don't mind learning about the machine you can get good deals used.

Look over the tires and read about uneven, acclerated tire wear problems. If a BMW has that issue, avoid! No one is quite sure why some do that shit and others don't.

You should see if you physically fit the models which interest you. I'm 6'2" and find some of their seats obnoxiously high on the recent machines.

Bleeding their ABS isn't fun and if you get a used BMW be aware their rubber stock brake hoses often crumble to dust and clog brake systems. Aftermarket braided stainless replacements are a very good idea on any bike, but especially BMW because Teflon doesn't turn to shit.
>>
>>16715351
I'd buy one but I've got too many motorcycles already. I've met a few classic bike collectors who have them because they are reliable. Air cooling isn't an issue and I consider it a plus on anything I'm not racing. Fins need no maintenance. Fins just work. It's not a fucking overheating dirt bike with no top end life by design.

Go to W650/W800 forums and learn more about them from actual owners. The Kawasaki predecessor was a better machine than contemporary (now vintage) British twins so Kawasaki made the W650 and W800 and improved the styling a bit.

Some linkys to get you started. My perspective is I'm an old mechanic who psychotically hates unreliable vehicles (except the vintage British I collect, but I don't pretend they'll run forever like my FXR Harleys).

That basic layout has made millions of motorcyclists happy.

Make sure it doesn't have the infamous uneven & rapid tire wear issue if you do, because there is no guaranteed fix and the precise causes aren't thoroughly understood.

Burger so not familiar, but for firstbike make RELIABILITY your main concern. Get a factory service manual even if you send out your work. Many small shops nig it and don't have specific factory manuals for everything.

You don't see style when you ride, but you certainly experience handling and suspension.
>>

Training will fix that. You can't ride a pedal bike without countersteering. It's how bikes work. Training will enlighten you to do it deliberately. Riding is not intuitive. Training is good.
>>
>>16716174
Next time, drain the carbs and remove the battery then connect a tender during prolonged storage.

You'll have even better feels.

Get or download factory service manual. Even better feels ensue.

>You can't ride a pedal bike without countersteering. It's how bikes work.
this desu

the whole msf/keith code "wooo turn left to turn right countersteering is magical voodoo woooo spooky" shit is a lot more confusing than it is helpful
>>
>>16717235
I think countersteering on a moto is even easier than a bicycle just because of the control over the throttle that you have. On a bicycle it feels like I'm going to fall over without pedaling hard.
>>
>>16716183
Did you run the engine long enough to get the Seafoam (mostly palm oil) into the carbs? Otherwise it won't protect low speed jets. I use STA-BIL with great success over many vehicles and many years.

Make draining your carbs a habit. You'll be glad you did.
>>

>If my glue fix doesn't work I'm going to do a 2-1 conversion with a Mikuni carb

Don't buy diaphragms at a dealer. When you replace them, a bit of silicone grease will keep them from sticking to the dashpot cover or carb body, and when you separate the cover use a thin blade if it doesn't just come off in your hand.

I wouldn't spend the money on a sometimes problematic carb kit. Just write off your mistakes to learning and move forward for much less money.

Example which may fit your bike:

http://jbmindustries.com/Keihin_diaphragm.html

Have some of my pasta:

My carb overhaul kit below. I suggest noobs or casual carb molesters print this list.

Tray to work on, bright LED headlamp with narrow beam, magnifying glass, cheapass SIX point metric 1/4" drive socket set with a screwdriver and spinner ratchet handles, usual small metric combo wrenches, metric "ignition" wrench set, hollow-ground "gunsmith" style screwdriver or similar screwdriver bits, JIS multibit screwdriver, typical multibit screwdriver, set of #60 -90 drill bits for jet drilling, small visegrip to hold bits while spinning jets between thumb and forefinger to drill and debur, RUBBER TIPPED blow gun, a hunk of old throttle cable or bicycle cable (extract one strand as a "jet poker", I don't use welding tip cleaners because they are actually round files), small drill bits and screw extractors for removing EPA mixture plugs, and a five gallon pail I use to soak carbs in undiluted Pine-Sol. I pour the Pine-Sol back into the jug since it's good for a couple or three uses undiluted. You can pour it down the sink and your kitchen will smell like a G.I. party.

Nothing expensive in that list at all. BTW I never use a common wedge-shaped screwdriver on jets.

I use the cheapest carb spray I can find. Walmart toluene works as well or better then ripoff solvents with similar ingredients.

Harbor Freight ultrasonic (vibratory, really) cleaners speed things up and work fine with Pine-Sol.

Buy a ninja suit from army surplus.

>>
>>16717250
Because you are. Counter steering only works because the lean of the bike causes the solo cup effect (don't know what it's actually called: where the smaller radius of the side of the tire makes you turn).

If you're leaning over but not going fast enough you're just falling over. Counter steering doesn't actually steer the bike, it leans the bike and the lean steers the bike.

Slow speeds counter steering doesn't work because you can't achieve enough angle to turn in any meaningful way while moving slowly.

More like at slow speeds the rotational inertia of the front wheel isn't large enough to stabilize it.
>>

Also with lighter wheels and a larger wheel diameter the rotational inertia decreases. Bicycle wheels are typically bigger and lighter than motorcycle wheels.

That's a total custom build, not stock and not iconic. Fun though no doubt.

I rode the originals when they were new, RDs of the air and liquid cooled persuasion too. The LC was loved the moment it shipped.

Most iconic two stroke is Yamaha TZ 750. It was murdered by a rule change, or its descendants would be destroying four stroke road racers to this day. Kawasaki and Suzuki could not compete.

I just did the Pine Sol soak, I did it for 2 days, and it didn't work. I followed another anons advice and what I found to be incredibly effective was to boil the carbs in lemon juice and water. 1 part lemon, 5 parts water and it worked incredibly well.

I hope you don't try to go down the street for a soda on that thing.

Drum brakes just teach you how to have good braking distances.

Nice score. They are fun pitbikes and ancestor of Rebel.

Will Lemonaide work?
>>
>>16717849
They must have been hideous, but glad the lemon juice worked. Some people like Simple Green too.

Doesn't matter to the casting what you use since hot water washes it all off anyway.

>>16717882
I wouldn't, there's a lot of sugar in there that can mess stuff up. I bought a bunch of bottles of lemon juice, and the acidity helps rip through the carb at a boil that 2 days of sitting in pure Pine sol couldn't come close to. Just watch out though, if you boil too long a chemical change on the aluminum can take affect. It works better on nickel carburetors.

Best benefit is I made lemonade out of the leftover lemon juice.

>>16717888
Yeah man it did the business. Now I'm just chasing down a minor vacuum leak but it can now idle and rev without the the choke
>>
>>16717865
>Drum brakes just teach you how to have good braking distances.

Front drum control is shit and their performance is feeble on a good day, except for very rare vintage road race drums. Much of that is due to stretchy cable and pitiful manual leverage.

Rear drums work much better than front drums because feet = stronk and most rear drums are pull-rod operated.

That Twinstar probably won't care much since it's so light. Rebel disc front ends swap if you run into a free one.
>>
>>16717898
How long did you leave it boiling for?
>>
>>16717898
>Go home, you're drunk

Nah, glanced at phone pic which is small. My bad.
>>
>>16717904
Not him but since boiling can't hurt the metal casting you could leave it at a rolling boil for say a half hour and that should be more than sufficient.
>>
>>16717904
20 minutes.

>>16717903
I agree they're shut, but they'll slow you down eventually.

I'm not too worried about the brakes. They still work great. But yoy can imagine my face when the guy rolled up to our meeting spot riding the bike, stalled in a nearby interection and pushed it the remaining 50'. It was only running off the idle circuit
>>
>>16717770
Though that's technically at play here.. No. That's not "more like". That's "my car is falling down a cliff due to gravity, but more like the magnetic field of the earth is pulling it". Technically yes I think.. But that's not at ALL why your car is falling down a cliff.

You're leaning and you need to counteract the lean by centrifugal force (or centripetal, I forget which is the "away from center" force). The only way you can do that is flinging yourself in a circle aka turning a corner at speed. Not enough speed = not enough fling, and you fall over. The rotation of your wheels has almost nothing to do with leaning in a corner, in fact it tries to straighten you up slightly.

Took the gixxer 1000 on a mini-road trip. All I have to say is that it is significantly more comfortable than the 600. I still had back pain but the majority of the discomfort was coming from the wind, the traffic, and my wrist from holding the throttle

btw if you snapped the bolt, as you now know, you tightened it way to hard. Usually the lower part of the fork is aluminum. Be careful with that. The clamping force you can induce is unbelievable. You can also snap or damage the clamp if you tighten the screws to hard. Look the torque up. It is usually something around 25Nm

>>
>>16715619
It's a figure of speech, obviously if your mirrors go out and up you shouldn't be looking upward in a corner. The point is that you want to try to scrape your chin on the ground while cornering, again, figuratively of course.

Ultimately, what you want to do is shift as much of your weight into the corner as possible. Trying to kiss your mirrors or scrape your chin on the ground means you get more of your torso into the corner, keeping the bike more upright.

Take the class, then buy. You'll get a feel for how confident you are initially on a bike.
Most of what you'll be worried about is throttle control. If you can stay cool enough to pay attention at first, ride whatever you want.
If you're a shit sandwich out there, buy a 250 and practice until you're not endangering others at least.
>Wat baik
They mean buy a beater. Older bikes are less delicate, as a rule. And you feel less bad about dropping a 2k rustbucket than your 10k dream machine. I personally recommend a UJM (older version of that), so you can try a couple kinds of riding on the cheap. Look up the collector's forum to research common issues.
Other people preach dirtbikes, assuming you'll crash harder than you actually will. They come from an era of aluminium frames in everything. And can't corner for shit.
Fuck bitches, get miles.
