Hello guys how loose is too lose on a chain? like i can hit the swingarm if i play with it but its not so loose that it comes off on its own. should i tighten it up a bit?

thanks,

>>

There's usually a sticker in your chain cover that tells you how much slack it needs
Other refer to the manual
>>
>>16695958
Just look up your bikes owners manual online and check the chain specs then tighten appropriately you fucking retard.

You seriously think of all the resources available to you asking random people on a Burmese jewel enthusiast forum about the chain tightness of a bike you didn't even specify is the best way to get the correct information?

Question about bmw reliable.

Is it with any model in particular? Asking because I'm looking into getting a gs1200 adventure.
>>
>>16696119
A guy is asking about a good bike to start on. You're feeding him a bunch of brand loyalty bullshit instead of quantifiable data on the quality of a bike.

He would be just as happy riding a good bike as he would a bad unreliable bike britbong bike. And he's have a lot less headaches too.

When you own a bike and have no reference point you cant see the forrest for the trees. A new rider would easily think the amount of repairs and maintenance is normal for a less reliable bike. When he could have had a more reliable bike and enjoyed himself more of the time he owns it without having to worry about eurobong tier reliability.

Adventure bikes are quintessential poser bikes.

the image is sorted by horsepower, but it's a lot more fun on the sheet itself when you're able to filter things dynamically and find internal patterns

i haven't looked into triumphs at all yet, though quite a few people sing the praises of daytona 675 and street triples. My impression is that given their size and the fact that I'm in the US, they're out of my price range. (and also bigger than I want.) Are there any other commonish bikes with 3 cylinders?

also the more data i collect, the more the cbr500r seems like the perfect bike. the v-strom 650 is still cool though.

Swapped a ZX6R master cylinder onto my F4i. The stock master had an integrated reservoir so I had to make my own way to mount the plastic reservoir with this one. I couldn't get a super solid brake lever like the ZX had, but it seems better than the stock CBR one.

That's because you got an entirely different master cylinder, the ratio is probably now completely different and you will never be able to get a firm lever.

if your stock one wasn't firm, it probably needed to be bled or rebuilt. when you change a master cylinder, you have to size it appropriately for the caliper/s or else you will end up with a mushy or excessively hard lever

Saw some blonde brah on one ride through my neighborhood a little while ago. No gear, red anodized exhaust. Also saw an 80s or 90s KLX250 when I got fuel before I rode to lunch an hour away. There was the usual assortment of Herlie Derpidsin riders but in greater numbers than expected; there was even a collection of about 25 of them in the Southridge Mall parking lot. Later, I met a guy and his wife after I had lunch. She had a little red Honda Nighthawk 750 and he had a Honda 919 somethingorother. I asked him what the numbers were on it and that I thought it was probably reasonably quick. He said "only 105HP and 70-something ft-lb of torque." The way he was talking it almost seemed as if he was jelly of my V-Stronk's v-twin in terms of its linear power delivery. His bike looked nice though.

though i live in tx so cold weather isn't really much of a problem

my impression of carbs are "if your bike won't start, or it starts and then dies, take your carb apart and unclog the jets" - are they any more complicated than that?

(my impression of fuel injection is "if you mess with your exaust a little, you're ok. if you mess with it a lot, either buy a kit to hack your ECU or pay a shop to retune it")

I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. EFI is self adjusting to some extent as long as you leave the sensors and shit in everything. It's also very very unlikely to fail and also more convenient on a daily basis. So you will pretty much never have to do anything with it unless you do some major mods to your intake or exhaust.

Carbs are finnicky and less consistent. It's highly likely you will need to change jets and needles if you change anything on the bike. They also require cleaning and adjusting far more often just as basic maintenance.
>>

if a bike is cold and wont start you give it more choke

All this argument about adv bikes being useless...

If I use my bike 80% on the road but want to go offroad sometimes and explore trails and shit, be able to cross a river and so on, Should I buy a dirt bike and sacrifice the confort and road performance that the ADV bike gives me? Or should I buy a full road bike and never get offroad at all?

Why is it so hard for people to understand this?

An ADV bike is like a duck.
A duck can run.
A duck can swim.
A duck can fly.
Of course a cheetah is fuster running.
Of course a shark swims better.
Of course an eagle flies better.
But the duck can do everything.

And yet you could still take a sportbike out into terrain like what you've posted.

Yep, keep in mind we have some of the highest rates of bike theft in the country, so if you add comprehensive your rates go up dramatically enough its cheaper to just get a garage and liability.

Try Geico, I'm paying $50/mo for liability on two bikes (09 KLX250SF and 99 SV650). Stack on all the discounts (multi-car/multi-policy, MSF, etc).

givens accepted by defendant and plaintiff:
>sport bikes do roads gud
>supermotos do dirt gud

plaintiff's claim:
>adventure bikes are useless

plaintiff's support of claim:
>sport bikes can do everything adventure bikes can do w.r.t. off-road riding

there are at least two approaches to disproving the plaintiff's claim:
>show that the support is false
>show that the claim is false even if the support is true

so far, only the first approach has been tried in this thread
>look, my adventure bike can do this offroad! (webm)
>but my sport bike can do that offroad! (...nothing lol)
>but some adventure bikecan do this crazier thing offroad! (youtube)
>but some sport bike can do that offroad too! (youtube)
>that's not a sport bike!
>no true scotsman!
etc

let's try the second approach:
>prove that adventure bikes are not useless GIVEN that sport bikes can do everything adventure bikes can do w.r.t. off-road riding

the last part is key - it allows us to leverage things adventure bikes is able to do that the sport bike cannot, OUTSIDE of an off-road context. this seems simple - adventure bikes have more comfortable posture, more protection from wind, and much more cargo capability.

"but wait!" the plaintiff says, "touring bikes can do all of those things! Just like you should get a supermoto instead of an adventure bike to do things offroad that the sport bike can't, you should get a touring bike instead of an adventure bike to do things on roads that the sport bike can't!"

but the intersection of these abilities is unique. no sport bike can do everything an adventure bike can do, and no touring bike can do everything an adventure bike can do, and no supermoto can do everything an adventure bike can do.

which brings us back to >>16696495, which already had the answer

If the prospect of any sort of offroading occurs on my cross country trip I'd much rather have the more reasonable compromise of a 300-400lb bike that can eat highway miles and still have reasonable suspension and mass for offroading.

DRZ400
WR250R
KLR650
DR650
690 EnduroR
F650GS
CB500X
etc.

Choose one based on the fraction of dirt to road riding. A bike bigger/heavier than these just don't make sense for any sort of offroading beyond easy hardpack trails.

drz, wr arent much fun for multistate rides esp if you need to spend time on freeways tryign to do 80 with a full load of gear.
the dr650 is a good cheap compromise bike
klr650 is a fat pig with no power but its simple and fairly tough and offers more wind protection than the dr650
690 enduro is stupidly uncomfortable for long distance but is probably the most capable of the bunch, has known reliability issues too.
bmw is dead if dash is damaged, that alone is enough to put me off it.
cb500x basically a little bit lighter slower and less supported vstrom

The amount of assmad in this thread over adv vs drtsqwrt vs sportbike is amazing. I know I'm shit at offroad regardless of bike type; CC can tell you that. But dammit I'll give it a shot either way.

>>
>>16696026
They are just below what you would expect from Japanese bikes. I believe that by 2016 they sorted out all the gremlins. I expect the 675 to drop in price once the 765 comes out.

Also that is a race bike. A novice has no business riding something that accelerates and stops like a Lamborghini. Buy a cheap beater you get good on.

How fast do you think a WRR is?
Freeway speeds are not an issue for them. They're not exactly comfortable for it but they don't have any issue doing it.

Have you ever ridden one?

>>16696833
>drz, wr arent much fun for multistate rides esp if you need to spend time on freeways tryign to do 80 with a full load of gear.
Granted you hard bag one up and load it down with gear, you're probably looking at a 65-70mph cruise speed, but still not that big of an issue. You're not exactly going to be cannonballing in a multistate trip. And you'll probably want to just cruise and take in the scenery anyway.

Behind the 690 enduro they're the most offroad capable bikes on the list. Again, depends on the fraction of dirt youre riding on and the compromise you're willing to make.

>690 enduro is stupidly uncomfortable for long distance but is probably the most capable of the bunch, has known reliability issues too.
In stock form yes, no one should try to adventure on essentially an overpowered heavy dirtbike. But the same is true for a DRZ or WRR. People mod them to be appropriate for adventure riding and when modded they're probably as good as it gets. Just a pity that its a eurobong shitheap.

>cb500x basically a little bit lighter slower and less supported vstrom
