oh okay, well we had most of stuff already at home, like the sideboxes and the duffel bags. The bike is actually my moms bike i borrowed from her for the trip an she allready had the tank bag.
I did built the luggage rack out of some metal plates myself. Did the plastic coating of ot at the university for free so I only really needed two new brackets for the sideboxes and that was about 25€ each from ebay.
More expensive was tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, gas cooker, camping pots etc.

I don't frequent bike threads often, and so I'm admittedly ignorant compared most of you, but I want a simple, reliable, reasonably powered, affordable cruiser. >>
I guarantee all the people saying the skills test never even took it and just went to the msf. Or just don't have an M1.

Knowing how to ride with a clutch doesn't make the test easy. Very low sped bike handling is an acquired skill that you don't learn just cruising the streets. You actually have to practice to acquire the skills.

The only people who don't need to practice probably have some sort of dirt riding background where they acquired the skills.

Nobody throws a leg over a motorcycle and instantly knows how to roll a consistent near perfect circle at 5-7mph. If you claim you do you're a fucking liar and nobody believes you.

It's especially hard on sportier bikes with steep rake, bad turning circles, and taller first gears.

In short trips it really is not that bad
I've however done a couple of 6h+ trips with a pillion and she was definitely getting tired a lot quicker than i did

The position is not that bad, i find it comfortable even if in a bit on the tall side (about 6'3" if i did the conversion right)
The main problem for the passenger is the convex shape that gets up your buttcrack after a while
Corbin makes a custom seat with more padding and a backredt for the passenger

Also there's a more touring oriented sister bike called the mana, pic related
I only suggest it because it has an auto tranny and you said you have a scooter

That's way fucking easier than the CA M1 skills test.

Stupid that you have to have a M1 holder with you already though.

In ca you have to ride a course and stay within a set of lines. Anything outside the lines or any foot down fails you. You also fail if you go to fast.

Come on now LAMS laws are no way near as bad as euro laws.
at least on lams you can ride 650's and we even get bikes Americans can't like all the bikes in pic related.
>>
>>16685155
Nah it's pretty much the same. If you put down your foot or touch the rain gutter/grass you fail. You don't have to stay in those lines but you have to do figure eights in both direction back to back with live traffic and have to signal and shoulder check specific places.
>>
>>16685157
>LAMS
Just took a look at the on bike testing.

It's all medium/normal speed manuvering. things you would learn in normal riding.

The CA MC Skills test is all very low speed maneuvering inside of narrow lines, and if you go outside the lines or put a foot down you insta-fail and have to reschedule the test which usually means weeks.

I would prefer the LAMS test as it looks much more applicable to real world riding than this MC Skills test bullshit.
>>
>>16685191
Doing figure 8's with no line constraints is significantly easier than having to do slow circles with line constraints.

I can do fig 8's easily and roll tight circles with no line contraints. But add narrow lines you have to stay within and it adds an entirely new level of difficulty.

Try it, go to your local DMV and try to do the course.
>>
>>16685201
I think not being able to look through the turn and having to watch and stop for traffic is probably equally hard. It's not like the side street we were on was any wider than that circle.

I'm not going to argue about it though, I rode dirt for 12 years before I got my Ninja and then DD'd it the whole summer I got it, I would have passed no problem.

Isnt the point of a motorcycle license test to get you up to speed as well?
you spend 6 hours or so learning everything about riding before you actually do the test over here.
>>
>>16685211
In NY you walk into the DMV whenever you want and take a 20 question written test, if you get 80% or better you get your permit. Permit lets you ride within 1/4 mile of a licensed rider. Later you bring in a signed form saying you have ridden for 20 hours and they give you a 5 minute road test, if you pass they give you a Hayabusa.

In CA you don't even need to ride near a licensed rider, just can't ride at night or on the highway.

Thank you for the recommendation. The mana looks more comfortable comparatively. Rides we go on typically last between 4-8 hours with a few breaks, so comfort is paramount. No bully side note: I had a few wheely throttle wrecks when I was a teenager so the thought of something that can lift the front end does frighten me.

The mention of automatic is appreciated, but I grew up on a Kawasaki KE175, so gears are no problem. In fact when I bought the scooter I asked where the gear selection was... had no idea CVT transmissions existed: frankly they're horrible.

4-5k is the budget, and im OK with it being used since I'm mechanically inclined if something were to go wrong.

Looked at the Honda Rebel, Shadow, V-Star 650, TU250X

Pretty jelly. Britbong here, Had to take a test to get a 125, then another 3 tests to get a restricted 500, then after 2 years of riding take another 2 tests to get the bike you want.

God bless the nanny state.
>>

The way it works here is:
>go into the DMV
>wait in line for an hour and 45
>receive paperwork for license class change
>fill it out and go back to wait in same line for another hour and 45
>get sent to another window where you pay the $30 something dollar fee
>get sent to another line for a window for 30 minutes
>scan thumb and take a new photo
>get sent to another window with a line and get put in front of a computer to take multiple choice driving test and motorcycle test.
>go back to window and wait in line again
>receive paper that says you have a motorcycle learners permit. and leave
>you are now capable of riding anything with two wheels anywhereyou want so long as it is not at night and not on a freeway
>call DMV to schedule skills test
>get appointment for 3 weeks from now
>show up on motorcycle and must have DOT helmet, insurance, registration, etc.
>go to test scheduling window and wait an hour
>get sent outside to wait in line of cars for the testers for another hours
>ride the slalom and between the lines for two circles, slow and straight between the lines and two circles again in the opposite direction, and then a faster ride around the outside of the course shifting up and down a few times
>if you pass you get handed the test paper and sent back inside to wait in line for another hour
>you're given a temporary paper license and sent on your way, with an M1 endorsement license in the mail.
>you're now qualified to ride any motorcyucle in any conditions anywhere.

If the DMV wasn't so booked you could theoretically go from never having ridden a motorcycle to fully licensed in 2 days.

Hello /dbt/

I know this might alarm some of you but please lets try to stay on topic. I am a 440 pound man and am interested in motorcycle racing. I have plenty of experience riding motorcycles (huge cruisers with my father and uncle mainly) so I know how to operate one but I have never even dared to sit on a sport bike. Do any of you guys know of any bigger guys that ride sport bikes and how they fare? I've seen a 350 pound dude on a S1000RR on YouTube and he looked to be pretty much pushing the limits of that bike (not power wise, but just how much space there is to hold a person in the seat etc...)

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you

Only a larger sport touring bike or a hypersport touring bike would accommodate your fat ass. Don't even think of rolling your gargantuan meat bags over a 600 or 1000cc sportbike, you will destroy it.

Hayabusas and ZX-14's were created to accommodate sub-orbital bodies such as yourself.

Stop eating so much food god damn you are one of the most obese people i have ever seen.
God damn i thought i was fat when i was 96kg....

How fucking hard is it to get through your thick fucking skull that you could live for like 3 years eating 1 cup of rice per day purely on your fat reserves, the reason you gain weight even when eating very little is your body already has more than enough fat than it can consume.

why are fat people so dense?
you could lose that weight simply by eating less you wouldnt even have to change your life style but no, them tummy rumbles hurt right?

Give up on your dreams of racing motorcycles until you lose that weight to answer your question.....

Well the upside is you're very likely to have a fatal accident from going 50 in a motorway because it's your top speed, or because the clutch is stuck in gear because all the 125s are ancient junk, or because your brakes barely work, or because you still have inner tubes in you wheels that WILL puncture.

Joking aside, it took years to get back any faith that a normal bike won't have some catastrophic failure with normal use because of the junk that you're forced to ride at the start.
>>
>>16685275
Serious answers:
1. Please lose some weight. It will make you and your bike quicker, among other benefits. I'm not being flippant, either.
2. Go to a dealer with a wide selection of used sportbikes, nakeds, and sport tourers. Sit on them and see what fits.
3. A trip friend here I know is about 220 lbs and has fun on an 100 cc bike. Power ain't everything.
>>
>>16685342
I didn't say anything about being fit. I just laid out the bare minimum requirements to be considered an adult male.

must be
>at least 100kg/225lbs
>below 20% bodyfat
>at least 183cm/6' tall

If you do not meet these bare minimum requirements you are not a fully grown adult male and should kys.

First of all, I am this heavy because I want to be. The sport I compete in requires a bodyweight between 180-210kg. It may not look it but I am quite athletic and would pretty much run circles around your frail ass any day of the week

Second, it isn't a 'dream', I already know I can do it since I rode a TDM 900 a few weeks back and fit quite comfortably but that bike is massive and I don't know how it compares in size to proper sport bikes. This is the closest thing I have ever seen to not-a-cruiser

As for the rest of you, thank you for the suggestions. I will look into the Hayabusa and ZX14
>>
>>16685343
If I want to kill ymself with an unsafe bike or by driving unsafely on the motorway on a bike too fast for me to control, I want to be able to do it.

No government should, or can, tell me what to do with the property I own or what property I can own.

What about riding without a permit/license over there? What if you just go out and buy a hayabusa andd ride it, what's stopping that?

In the US many people ride for years without ever getting permitted/licensed. You get a ticket for riding out of class along with anything else you got pulled over for, you pay it, and you continue on. Maybe the occasional cop is a dick and tries to tow your bike.

>>

First of all you are that heavy because you can't control yourself and you are using what ever excuses you can to keep your unhealthy habbits afloat.
>requires a body weight of 180-210kg
lmao wtf kind of excuse is that?

secondly you folding your fat around a tdm900 does not mean you can ride a bike fast, for one you throw off the centre of gravity way too much, how are you expecting tyres designed to handle a 200kg bike and 75kg rider to handle your obese land whale arse?
they won't.
You also completely kill all acceleration on the bike and put immense pressure on the chain, lugging your lard arse around is literally like strapping another bike on top of a bike, then riding it.

seriously just lose some weight. why is that so hard for you to do?

When you can see your dick without looking for it, then start thinking about racing motorcycles.

Nothing stops you from owning the bike, but if you ride it on the road you run into a load of problems. to do it, you're running without a licence, without insurance and without tax. A lot of places have automated licence plate readers, s if you go past one of them you're fucked, or if you get pulled by the police, they'll run your plates and you're equally fucked. fines are in the thousands and you'll likely have to go to court.

I fully agree that it's bullshit, additional revenue for the government from more tests all in the name of safety is all it is.

No they don't. I won both. The same skills you learn on a sportbike can be applied to a supermoto and vice versa. You can easily ride a supermoto like a sport bike.

The fact that they have different suspension setups and proportions do not change the underlying skills in a corner. Dragging knee on a WRX easily translates over to a sportbike. Actually makes it much easier as a real sportbike will have much more sorted suspension, a lower seat height, and more grip.

>You're perfectly free to go crash into a tree at 100 mph (please do), just not on public roads or property

You can learn just as well on something like a WRX and while learning on it when you drop it you don't have any plastics to royally fuck.

A light naked 250cc bike like the WRX is a much more appropriate bike to learn on and learn to push hard than a fully faired pretend sportbike.

Of course, but saying that a WR is just as good around a full roadrace track as a ninja 250 is just plain retarded. There is a reason their chassis geometry is way different, and AMA 450 super singles have such highly modified suspension to be rideable at the higher speeds of road racing

Somehting I literally never said.

I said a WR makes a much better starter bike and if you're going to get a 250cc bike it's better to get something like the WRX over a 250/3300 faux sportbike to learn on. You can push it hard and if and when you push it too hard you can drop it and nothing happens. You pich it up and ride on, on a fully faired faux sportbike you have substantial damage. You're not gaining anything over learning to push a faux sportbike over learning to push something like a WRX.

And when you do move on to a real sportbike those skills you learned pushing a WRX directly translate to fully faired high performance sportbike.

Most people do believe it or not, it's nice to see how you're riding from a 3rd perspective and see some stuff you could fix.

A mate rode behind me on track for a lap and it was very illuminating to see where I was actually apexing and places I could improve on my lines a lot.

Getting some footage of yourself is probably one of the best things you can do to improve on your riding because it takes out any guesswork.

You can ride a supermoto either way.

Foot forward and on the tank is to unload the rear wheel as much as possible and permit slides. beneficial for lower speed corners which is why it was adopted for su0permoto racing.

You can very easily not load up the front and lean of the bike like a sportbike and be fast, you're just not going to slide which can hurt your ability to get the bike turned in lower speed corners. Doing so isn't "wrong" it's just different.

Leaning a supermoto like a sportbike is a very valid way to ride one and a good way to practice body position and confidence for a real sportbike. Additionally you can go faster around higher speed corners because you're not going to run out of ground clearance as fast if you're leaning of into the turn.

Leaning out foot out is only really beneficial for low speed and can hinder the high speed. And is ultimately useless if you're not sliding the bike in which most people do not do.

They are doing it wrong though.
those bikes are designed with a very high centre of gravity which is why the body positions used on them are completely different.

If they were riding pic related they would be using the right body position but they aren't so they're not.

Lol. Yea the scout is a pretty compact bike.
But put it next to a chief and it's kinda funny. They're pretty long. Very lincoln town car esq. Which is great on longer trips. But you can Def feel the length *phrasing* in the turns
>>
>>16685858
lean out foot out is only beneficial for sliding the bike to get it turned in.

If you're not sliding the bike in you're gaining nothing from a funky foot out leaned out body position and loading up the front tire.

You can, and may people do, ride supermotos quickly with sportbike like body position.

If you ride a supermoto and you're not sliding it in, your "TOP SUPERMOTO RACER IN THE WORLD" body position is accomplishing exactly nothing.

I really want to buy some chink fairings for my CBR so I can make it bright and colorful. Too bad I don't have money

trying to convince my roommate to do this after he crashed twice and his fairings are all zip tied together now. He thinks $400 is too much, meh.
>>
>>16686110
That's a great corner for running out of ground clearance

It's really a lot of money when you only work 14 hours per week at a low wage.
>save for months to buy new fairings only to beat them up again because I would rather have fun on my bikes than babby them.

Nice I have a signed photo poster of this back home. Thanks for the nostalgia

don't cigarettes just keep getting cooler because they cost a lot of money from tax and they are well known to kill people?

nice. mine was painted gloss black by one of the previous owners, so if I want to make it look good again I'll have to repaint the tank in addition to getting new fairings.

pic unrelated, but it is a good looking bike

I didn't call cigarettes cool, I called marlboro livery cool looking ya dingaling.

Can I ask something to "self proclaimed" experienced riders? (Riders that also do track days)

I just pulled the trigger on a KTM 1290 from 2015, gonna pick it up in 14 days, friday march 3. But my only motorcycle experience is a 05 CRF450R ( 15 hours ridden ) and a Kawasaki ZX10 year 1989 ( ridden only in august 2011 )

How fucked am I the first weekend of March? Since the 7k rpm kawasaki torque for me felt like a rocket ship, but the CRF had a seat waaay to tall.
>>
>>16686280
>ridden since 2011
you don't ride often do you?
>>
>>16686280
And yes I bought the bike without test riding it from a bike dealer because basically new not even 2k km on the dash and low price
>>
>>16686280
Just dont play with the throttle like an idiot and you will be fine, respect the fact that it has more than enough power to kill you and most people never have a problem.
>>
>>16686280
dont do this: >>16686110
>>

>lean angle sensitive ABS
>IMU informed TCS and anti wheelie

https://youtu.be/2h9MVbkpLZQ?t=24

nah you'll be fine.

Just leave the gubbins on.

you picked the wrong bike if you want to go tracking mind you.

you can ride what ever the fuck you want on a track.
one of the anons on dbt regularly rides his sv650 on track.
>>
>>16686296
I bought the Kawasaki and I rode around town that summer I didnt have a license or insurance... I felt very confident with it, power was amazing but felt heavy as fuck at low speeds.
CRF was a toy for the weekend in the woods, but I got tired of it fast because I had to bring it there with a trailer and didnt want to risk again on the streets.
Now I have a license and insurance will be ready for when I pick up the ktm.
>>
>>16686336
sv a shit!! :)
>>
>>16686323
How could an ABS system make you corner tho? That looks like a difference in rider input
>>
>>16686323
Im very close to Zolder and SPA, but Im not planning on goin to the track... or maybe one time just to experience it...
>>
>>16686336
Fug. For some reason I was thinking this whole time you mean the RC8R, not the duke. RC8R was an 1190 tho.

I know because it me.

I'm just saying if he's planning on buying the bike with a lot of track intentions (he was asking for riders specifically who have done track work) it wouldn't be the best choice, it's designed to be a really good road bike. It'll do it obviously but if it was a main goal of ownership it's probably not the right way.

>>16686350
the difference is the ABS uses the IMU to sense the lean and activities of the bike to ensure the bike tracks along it's current path without crashing, traditional ABS systems just look out for wheelspeed differences from the sensors.

Even if you're fully leaned over and slam the front brake as hard as you can, you won't crash because it just won't apply the brakes very much at all.

It's obviously an exaggerated example for effect on video but that's the difference.

>>16686355
there'd be no worries then.
>>
>>16686318
Well... to be honest this happeden A LOT with the kawasaki at low rpm... it was sensitive, even when twisting the throttle veeeery slowly made it judder like that.
>>
>>16685837
>tfw no mates to touge with

>>16686391
Thanks guys for the fast answers. Didnt know about an "advanced ABS"... will come back to post the foto of the ktm ;) cheers
>>
>>16686378
sounds like voodoo technology bullshit, no ABS is the best ABS system.

>>
>>16686441
spend 20 minutes sweeping it and it will look way better
>>
>>16686391
just gotta practice it and maybe drag a little rear brake if the bike is still choppy when cracking the throttle.

I haven't ridden one but my brother reckons the throttle is lovely on them though.

>>16686410
yeah nah I'm with you there but I want to try it anyway, in my experience non IMU informed ABS is pretty terrible and cuts in way too early.

Bikes like the RSV4 and panigale have multiple levels of ABS intervention, even some designed for track work so I'd like to try those on because I'd leave a system like that on when riding on the road for sure.

>>16686446
concrete is actually clean, I mean just parts and random bs clutter. I share it so I can only do so much
>>
>>16686463
doesn't look clean at all, there's even a bunch of dust on your tires. Looks ok besides that.
>>
>>16686456
it's a sport touring bike, people just use it for racing because it has a simple engine, lots of mods, and it's cheap.
>>
>>16685438
>being this fat
>>
>>16686477
Sure, but implying a bike that literally thousands of people have raced is out of place at a track day is dumb.

>>16686488
I agree, but I don't think he implied that at all tbqh.
