It's a truck that doesn't have a hitch, so it doesn't articulate, therefore "straight".

For example, Oilfag drives one right now that has a big oil tank on the back that he uses to melt frozen mudpuddles up on some northern plain that everyone sensible left after the fur trade petered out. I haven't yet figured out why the mudpuddles have to stay melted but it seems good clean fun so I don't object. Also they drink milk from bags up there so there may be no reasoning it out.

A little gas plant service work today; flushing the buildup of gunk out of a dehydrator tower with 70°C (158°F) water and an industrial soap/degreaser.

The tower is used to strip moisture out of natural gas before it is shipped downstream via pipelines.

>>
>>16674224
>bills

It's like you faggots don't even understand trucking. Part of the beauty of this job is having almost zero living expenses. If you want to make it in this field you need to stop paying rent and sleep on your brother's/sisters couch. Stop paying a car note and just borrow the family beater. Stop wasting money on food and eat ramen. Roll your own cigarettes and ferment your own cider in your sleeper, you just pour apple juice in a Ziploc and poke a few holes in it. If DOT asks you say it's bags full of piss.
>>
>>16674264
>>16674280
I live in my mom's house but I practically have it to myself since she moved out of state. However, now I'm paying for everything in full because she can't afford to, since she's helping her bf pay for a nice place of their own, and she's fine with selling the house but I don't want to let it leave our family's hands. It's a Habitat for Humanity home so the house payment is dirt cheap, and it's mostly energy efficient so utilities ain't bad either. What really bogs me down financially is my credit card debt. I was just about to begin finally paying that down after it all piled up on me, then the blazer died for good, and I didn't feel like fucking with a totaled '99 gas guzzling SUV that leaked through literally every cabin opening, so now I have a car payment to deal with.

I would totally ditch all this and live out of the truck, but it's just not feasible right now.

I drive a smaller international with a single 200 gallon tank that draws from the back of the tank. Going down steep hills at 1/4 tank on flat roads sets the alarm off. Then if you hit the brakes hard and the fuel starts sloshing all you hear is BEEE B B B BEEEE as it comes on and off so quickly.

Yeah, those are the dehy towers, and I shot that around noon.

The female to male ratio is pretty much 1:99. Usually the only women on worksites are industrial medics, although I have seen the rare trucker, pipeliner, welder, and a journeyman crane operator one time. Its still basically a male dominated industry.

No hazmat needed for frac sand. We don't have a tanker endorsement up here, and our equivalent to a Hazmat endorsement is an (usually) online course called TDG, or Transportation of Dangerous Goods.

The only optional endorsement we have that I am aware of is for LCVs or Long Combination Vehicles, so various long doubles, and maybe triples if they even allow them up here.

Yeah, that's just containment. At least you don't have to unload it yourself.

They FINALLY grabbed the container out of my loading bay. Third attempt, and they had to pick it up and edge it out a bit, then move the truck, then move the container a bit more, and so forth, until it was outside and they could lift it.

They got the damn thing down easily; I watched them do it. Without knocking holes in the roof or having to edge things around.

Seriously, most cars can be in and out of a truck pump, even with DEF before the mega carriers anti-idle shutdown kicks in.

Drive for a building supply company.
All flatbed loads inbound, required to be tarped.
No exceptions, they even note it is to be untarped in our yard, not at a rest area, not at a truck stop, not the night before while sitting out front.
Manager will automatically refuse load.
Our recieving is from 6am to 1pm, show up on Friday at 1:01pm, refused, no exceptions, they even lock the gate.
Manager put a port-o-potty on the yard for drivers, no paper, only empties when it fills to the top.
Won't let drivers use phone, fax, nothing, drivers not allowed into warehouse or office.
Corporate backs all of his decisions.

Even makes our own drivers (me) follow these rules, example: hauling rebar from a railyard to our yard, 3 mile trip, I am required to tarp, insane.

Would quit, but the pay and 100% matching 401k and 6 weeks vacation, only 1 or 2 overnights in a 10 day work week.

Right now I'm making 15/hr night manager at a gas station, and see a lot of truckerfags, cool guys. Talking to a few that work for pepsi and such, they say they wouldn't even get out of bed for 15, I should get a cdl a and go from there.

I thought about it and it sounded good, ran it by my dad the next time I saw him and he said it was a shit job with shit pay, did it for 25 years and hated it, etc.

I realize I could just lurk for a few weeks to get a consensus but what kinda return would I see if I ran to the community college this week, applied for cdl a courses, and in a few months applied somewhere? Would I actually see such little return that it's not worth it like I'm told?

I mean our plant in Riviera Beach isn't that big but they are always moving and bottling. Plus idk what all they do there. All of the Starbucks and Tropicana shit is done somewhere else but Riviera does all (or most at least) of the soda.

There is a Publix warehouse near my house and that places is pretty big. I think they might manufacture some store brand shit there. Either way if that Nestle place wasn't very big, they probably only do some of the product there. Those places have really high product turnover too, especially on consumables and dairy like that so it's not like they keep a giant warehouse stocked full of months woth of product. Our whole warehouse probably turns over every couple of days, maybe close to daily when it is busy.
>>
>>16684317
$15/hr with some OT isn't that bad. If you think living in a cuckshed on the road for $40k-$50k/yr is worth it, then go for it. Otherwise you can go local and bust your ass for $50k/yr and hope that in ten years you can get into a local gig where you don't have to break your back for $70k/yr. Only way to make real money is to buy your own truck but then you still can't sleep in your own bed much if you want to bank. Or you could stick with a company and try to get off the truck and into the office for $50k but will eventually hit a cieling on promotions without a college degree.

Too many shitty truckers ruined it for competent employees. I still say you are better off getting some other blue collar certs like HVAC or welding, get into a union, git gud and specialize at something, and you can sleep at home everynight and have the hope of making $75k+ if you keep learning and become valuable. Trucking companies would rather hire and train 20 new guys rather than pay an experienced and reliable driver what they're worth.
>>
>>16684317
Have fun destroying your body in the process
>>
>>16684419
This is probably what I needed to hear. A blue collar job is what I need, maybe not trucker though. Thanks man
>>
>>16684830
I'll swing it the other way and say I think trucking is probably the easiest way to make ~$50k/yr with no education or investment. As a door swinger, I spend about 90% of my day just sitting in the driver's seat listening to music. Physically, it's cushy as fuck. The only hard part is learning to cope with the annoying things, like jockeys/daycabbers running all over the yard at 40mph or being in your way, trying to find parking in Atlanta at 10pm, dispatch giving you a time crucial load that could only be on time if you averaged 95mph, etc. but physically it's the easiest blue collar job around. You can even make more money if you're willing to do driver unloaded freight, but then that will wreck your body for the first couple weeks and you might actually die in the summer depending on where you live. But door swinging is a pretty sweet gig, even if you work 70hr weeks and only make $900.
>>
>>16684317
what area?

also, how young are you that you just now found out your father's old occupations?
>>
>>16685106
You also live in a truck. So you are at work like 28 days a month. That fucking sucks.

And what if you want to have a family and kids and want to make a little more money to buy your kids food and clothes? Hopefully you can get in on one of the very few decent local jobs otheriwse gotta go owner-op and have fun not seeing the kids grow up.

In your 20s, it's straight because even if you have a college degree you are gonna be making about the same money in a starting gig with that degree in most fields. But at least with those other jobs, you are building up to something better. That's my main regret with getting a CDL. Only upside with my job is I at least could play off it as customer service and sales experience if I wanted to get into a higher paying sales job or some shit.
>>
>>16685148

What would you recommend to a trucker with a college degree? Truckerfag, I'd like your thoughts as well. I got a bachelor of science in psychology and that led to me being an otr trucker because I couldn't get a real job and fuck grad school. Should I cuck for the same company for a long time and try to use my degree as leverage to get myself one of those inside company jobs? I like driving now but I have no life outside the truck. Sometimes I just wish I could come home to my house or apartment everyday at 1800, cook dinner, watch TV, shit in my own shitter, have a beer and shitpost.
>>
>>16685496
Do whatever looks mildly interesting. You still gotta get experience in something tho which will suck when you're 35 and want to get out of the truck and have no job experience for anything related to that field. But even then you could try and find a company that you can drive for and get tuition reimbursement towards a masters if you can get away with some online shit.

Shoulda gotten a business degree tho. You can always do whatever with management if you got that.

There are truckers with masters and phds and 30 years in their field that switch to driving a truck. It's a different lifestyle and that's all the difference in the world to some of them. I just had a terrible experience with Swift.

There was 37 of us to start, and I would say at least 30 looked like hard drug addicts and/or just got out of prison. The trainers had no intentions on training us. If we didn't get it the first time, then we "don't belong in the business." and were considered stupid and ignorant. The hotel we stayed in was pretty nasty as well. Poor looking people basically lived there and would constantly harass you for cigarettes and "$5 for food".

But I passed and went on to training on the road. The guy I was with wasn't a nasty disgusting person, but he couldn't go 5 minutes without making perverted jokes and would go to fucking sleep while I was driving down steep mountains which I've hardly ever done before. He was also a chain smoker and I'm pretty sure I have lung cancer now. But he was an expert in teaching me how to manage my hours and deal with dispatchers.

I'm in my own truck now and I can't really say that trucking isn't for me, but driving for this company isn't for me.

Is it too soon to start looking for other gigs, or should I just stick it out for my year then look?

That actually does sound quite best in class for the trucking industry. I remember my trainer not showering at all besides his home time. And he always came back smelling like menthol so bad that I had to crack the window. I'd rather go back to smelling his sweaty cheesy chaffing ball sack smell.
>>
Just finished my CDL training at a community college and applied to some local job postings. I only got 2 offers out of 34 applications and I don't know which to pick.

>Job A
It's at a manufacturing plant. I load up product in trailers with a fork lift then take the trailer to the warehouse about 40 minutes away. Return and repeat. Mon-Fri 7AM-4PM. Pay is $17/hour. About a 15 minute commute from home.

>Job offer 2
Driving dump truck at a quarry. Pay is $22/hour ($15 first 90 days), but about a 45 minute commute from home. Hours would be Tuesday-Friday 6AM-6PM.
>>
>>16688532
That's rough. Which is more important, money or comfy? Job A sounds more comfy, but job B looks like more money.
>>
>>16688532
Job B has really shitty hours when you consider the commute. You also get paid 5 bucks more though
>>
>>16688426
They're in a class of their own
>>
>>16688532
Does the dump truck leave the quarry? if not then your day is better already not having to deal with shit people on the public roadways constantly threatening your cdl.
>>
>>16688532
Job A is more liability for lower pay. Job B actually gives you a decent amount of time off, since you'd be too dog tired to do anything after work in either job for the first few months. Quarries often have overtime available as well, while the factory job sounds strictly 1st shift, so you're stuck with your $600ish a week after taxes. The quarry might even have overnight hauls for you to do, so you could bump your hours as high as 70 a week and leave about $1200 in your pocket every week after taxes and deductions.

Go for #2; 48 hours a week versus 45, but split over only four days with mondays off AND more per hour.
Even with the longer commute, it works out to more free time at once. You also save money commuting only four days a week, at the downside of just doing work/sleep/work/sleep 4/7 days. But you get a day off with no work beforehand and no work the next morning. That's pretty fucking valuable.
It's not like you're doing manual labour, just sitting on your gradually fattening backside.

Lel I knew that looked familiar. It's nice with that base pay raise we got with the new year. Now on the slow ass weeks where I'm only working 35hrs a week and go do easy ass paperwork instead off running a route a couple times a week, I still make ~$950. It will be nice when summer comes around and I'm making $1100 when I actually run a route all 5 days and $1200 on heavy weeks.

>>16688532
Job B sounds dank only working 4 days a week but just make sure you get consistent work. If it gets slow during the winter and they send you home a day or two a week, that's gonna be a bite in the ass. But otherwise that $22/hr with a few hrs of overtime is nice. With the commute and longer days, you won't feel like doing shit but sleeping when you get home but having Mondays off makes up for it.

So is it accepted practice to just keep your cruise control set on your limiter while another truck tries to overtake 1 mph faster at his limiter? Or is the trucker being passed just being an asshole helping to hold up traffic for 5 min while the other guy passes, or doesn't in some cases.
>>
If the passer can only go 1mph faster, then he probably shouldn't be trying to pass in heavy traffic. At the same time, the passee could briefly drop down 1 mph to speed up the process that is holding up traffic.
>>
>>16691170
Pretty much this >>16691184

If traffic is heavier or it's not a 5-lane highway, I'll just sit behind the dude. But other driver on his limiter might as well drop down to 64mph for 45sec so dude going 65.3mph can actually get past.
>>
>>16691170
>>16691184
>>16691255
I go the limit non stop, I couldn't give less of a shit if it takes me ten minutes to get around the guy, and I don't expect him to ease up either. The only time I ever stop pushing the governor is if I see a faster truck coming up behind me, then I'll slow down until he passes me before I pass the slower guy.
As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as courtesy on the road.
>>
>>16691170
I'll actually slow down if someone going 1 mph wants to pass me. And if I come upon someone doing 1 mph slower I'll tap my accelerator pedal 3 times to get the 5 mph speed boost and get around then as quickly as possible.
>>
>>16691316
Yep this is the majority attitude I see in California on i5 from grapevine North where it's all 2 lane. Traffic is always heavy with cars trying to go 90 and trucks only going 62. Every time it will be a truck who cannot get past and a asshole trucker who won't let off holding up traffic for a mile behind. Makes me feel good when I can cut in close in front of a truck Who adaptive cruise control here.
>>
>>16691401
Not letting up doesn't make you an asshole. If the other guy can't get past, he shouldn't have tried passing. If he can't pass, he's the one who should back off. You have no obligation to let anyone get around you.

I would gladly inconvenience everyone else for free. But really, it's not about the money, it's about staying safe. Too many times to count have I gotten to the only truck stop in a 50 mile radius and gotten the very last spot, or rolled into a place with 2 or 3 minutes left on my 11 (thanks elogs). Situations were the difference between going 64 and 65 made all the difference in the world.

That demoralized look comes from living in Massachusetts in general, not from working in a quarry.

It's driving a short truck for $22 an hour with 3-day weekends and home every night. Move out near the quarry for a short commute and low rent--quarries aren't generally in metropolises--and this is the ideal bluecollar job.

I just listen for info that others are giving out, like that time someone called runaway coming down the mountain into Oregon from California. Hit the bottom and there he was on the shoulder, half-hidden in a cloud of smoke.

Sometimes I'll answer someone's question about traffic if I have an answer for them. It's pretty quiet most of the time though. I've gone weeks without hearing anything. Mostly just used at the rare shipper that uses CB to give trucks a door.

>after 45min of trying not to run over people in steampunk gear, I finally get out of the park and try to find this back gate.
>have to make a wide turn to get through, but fucking 30sec later I'm right where I need to unload the stuff.

I'm not tryin to lift a dirty toilet seat so I just leave it down and add to the piss. But that's only when there is no urinal.
>>
>>16700219
Just blast it with piss to wash away the piss, then it'll be nice and clean for you to sit on.

Stormy today in Cali.
Might call it a day early. (While getting paid of course) :^)

I'm fucking retarded so bear with me but is there any different between airing up a truck tire and a normal car tire? I bought one of those hoses that attaches to the air line, and I know it works because air comes out, but I can't fill my tire. I hold the hose on the stem for like ten minutes and it doesn't go up at all. My next course of action is to go to a TA and ask them to look at it, but I thought I'd try being an idiot here before I go be an idiot in person, if it's something simple.
>>
>>16700770
car tire has like 30psi
truck tire has like 120psi
>>
>>16700770
Mine are super picky about being perfectly lined up straight.
>>
>>16700770
are you attempting to fill a car or truck tire?
>>
>>16700786
Right but the stems are the same, aren't they? They look the same, the air hose looks the same, so either it should work the same or something is wrong with my tire. So if it's the tire, I'll have to go to a TA, but I just know the mech will go "no your tire's fine you're just airing it up wrong" although I don't even know what the wrong way to do it would be.

You got air pressure in yer tanks?

Yeah that's the one good thing about being local, I know exactly where to go for my deliveries 99.5% of the time.

But that fair was fucked up because I delivered there a bunch in past years and they would always have deliveries coming in on days when the place was closed. But today they needed some last minute one and we had to come through this little gate. It really wasn't a big deal, dude on the phone just had no idea what was going on. But basically to make the right turn into the gate and clear it with the trailer, you have to come from the far left lane of a 6 lane divided busy road. If drivers in Florida had an ounce of patience, it wouldn't be an issue.

Also I never used one, but I assume you hook it up to the glad hands? Do you have it on the red one? Is the truck running and building pressure? Did you press the trailer brake release knob?

You need to watch more TV. It's the Air Dragon™!

The thing would probably explode in your hand if you tried to fill up a 120psi steer tire.

>hook up fill-hose to red line
>leave blue line attached to trailer, or capped
>press in red trailer brake button
>air hose should now stiffen from 100psi running through it's entire length
>if not, check for kinks, straiten
>press hose to tire like car tire
>fills about 5psi in 15 seconds
>don't fill past 105 unless sidewall says so

>gun crime is 20 times more common than the average in other developed nations
You know they include suicide and self defense in those statistics right? In fact that's the majority of gun-related deaths (60-70%). The rest are chimpouts in the inner cities for the most part.
>healthcare isn't guaranteed to all citizens
Healthcare isn't a right. It's something you should discuss with your provider, not the gov't's problem. The gov't should allow you the privilege to get health insurance, but it shouldn't provide it, especially with the nightmare that is Obamacare forming monopolies in 15-30 states, effectively raising premiums in said areas.
>life expectancy is lower than Nicaragua and Bangladesh

And we're in the realm of complete bullshit aren't we?

The same first world that is letting Islamic extremists into their countries at alarming rates and literally has ISIS cells within their countries? if you don't want to protect your citizens from terrorists, your opinion on anything doesn't matter.
