FAQ:
can I fit?
>if you're under 6'2" and aren't overweight you can fit without modification
can I daily drive one?
>yes most people can daily drive a miata no problem.
even in the snow?
>yes miatas can drive well in the snow (with four snow tires. They're even better with an LSD)

>600 hp
nigga what this is the Miata general not the Mustang General. Im not sure how much power that block can handle but the stock 200hp is perfect for the miata.
Hey, I live in Atlantic Canada and never see any Miats for sale here, do they just die from rust or what?
I'm in SoCal, what should I expect to pay for a Miata? I'm thinking a 94/95 with all options preferably, as I don't want to get a NA that isn't the "best" NA.
Pic is my E39. Want Miata with a hardtop for daily.

If youre interested later in the year, I'm probably gonna be selling my 95. It has an LSD and cloth seats, and almost completely stock other than a few repairs i did myself. Currently at 96k mi. Paint is in good shape but has some scratches and cracks from people fucking hitting it or scratching it within the last 6 or so months

I'm jelly. I checked with my dealer yesterday and my ND has finally had a VIN assigned to it, but is still marked as "scheduled" by Mazda, meaning it isn't finished (or started, maybe) on the assembly line.
That's what I get for wanting a white GT w/ 6mt and black interior. ZERO cars in western Canada and the one I've got allocated to me is the only one bound for my shores that is being built in that combination for the next few months.
What's with Yank GTs not coming with the LSD? Canadian ones have it...
so...
would some TEIN S-Tech springs will fit in my 2.0l nc's stock suspension?
do I have to buy new shocks so the springs will fit?
if they dont fit in the stock suspension (Bilstein B6 I think in the 2 liter engine), what are other springs that you guys would recomend me to install in the B6?
a couple of days ago i've seen and stood next to a nb mx5. it was low but not stanced or anything like it and tiny, like REALLY tiny, tinier than the new twingo, it was so tiny and had gay looking front fascia i thought i'd turn into a woman if i stand next to it anymore. not trying to meme, but i thought i'd just share my experience.
>>16651101
I just clipped the hog rings and used zip ties when I put it back together.
>>16653833
>would some TEIN S-Tech springs will fit
don't know, but according to a quick search i think they will?
>do I have to buy new shocks so the springs will fit?
no
>if they dont fit in the stock suspension (Bilstein B6 I think in the 2 liter engine)
not all 2Ls came with the bilsteins, i think it's just the sport (and above) models. but if the shocks are yellow they're probably bilsteins.
>what are other springs that you guys would recomend me to install in the B6?
eibach pro springs are a common choice and i've been running them in mine until yesterday. they lower the car nicely but the handling isn't completely transformed (i think the spring rates are similar to stock)
i've just swapped out the springs (+ the bilsteins) out for some meisterr zetacrds and added some eibach ARBs. haven't really had the chance to drive it hard because it's been snowing here for once but the effect of stiffer ARBs was noticeable. the ride is a bit jittery even with a fairly low setting on the coilovers though. just need to wrestle with a couple of stuck bolts so i can reach the adjusters easily...
>>16654158
alright thanks a lot man
more people have recommended me the Meister ZetaR, but I'm on a budget and I dont feel like I need to drop a lot the car, also with the money I could get the new springs and a new exhaust system
>>16654250
i get what you mean, these latest suspension bits i've put in bring the total cost of mods up to the price of my car in the first place

Actually it's the timing gear that slides over it, the only thing holding on the gear and balancer is a single torque-to-yield bolt. The keyway doesn't do shit, DESU I'm surprised that engine ran at all with like 60 degrees of retardation.

what exactly do you need to fit? miatas have more room than you would expect. the passenger seat area, the area behind the seats and below the top, and the trunk is bigger than you would expect since it isn't lined usually. the only thing i havent been able to fit in my mx5 thus far was a 27" imac
>>16665712
Taking out the soft top is like having a back seat for your shit, the real impasse is not being able to fit a 205 wheel/tire in the trunk. Also your trunk floor insulation is probably mud if your tail light gaskets have never been replaced this is mine after scraping.

Guys what are your thoughts on body roll in ND? It is kinda heavily criticized that it rolls too much and therefore does not inspire much confidence in the driver.
Is it really that bad? Do you get used to it?
>>16673300
just put some stiffer sway bars on it
>>16673264
Your better off findin a 1.8. You'll have to modify your throttle body and coil pack to fit the 1.6 motor. They will not bolt on. You'll also have to switch to a 1.6 header and possibly exhaust unless yours is already custom.
Just find a 1.8. They are out there, you just may have to pay. Check Facebook Craigslist etc.
>>16673300
>complain about stock suspension in small, cheap roadster
My mechanic just quoted me $1300 for my timing belt/water pump, rear struts, and a brake flush. Am I getting fucked?
>>16673633
Yes, but if you cant do the work yourself then you gotta pay to play. Shop around, see if you can find a better deal. I bet you can. Even if you get the timing job done somewhere you can easily do shocks and a brake flush yourself.
Rear shocks are 20 minutes easy, and only 6 bolts. A brake flush is easy and usually only cost you some beer and a buddy. Read forums online to get an idea of what all is involved with the jobs, and really be honest with your own abilities. They are easy jobs to start to learn on, and the miata is a great platform.
I just bought a Water pump/timing kit off of ebay for $45 dollars. Took me about 3 1/2 hours, two tries on setting timing. First time doing it myself, but I did the research and was confident I could do it. If not, I wouldn't have a car tomorrow.
Lads I need help. I bought a jack to change tires and brakes but my underbody is rusted and instead of lifting the car it just bends the frame. Send help. What do I do? Is there a more solid jacking point?
>>16673633
yes, the only hard part about that is a timing belt/water pump. the rest you can do on your own. and that part is not worth 1300
>>16673694
take a picture and circle where you are trying to put the jackstands.
i made the mistake of using the frame rails originally which my frame also bent
i THINK the spot you want to use is actually those plasticy looking part right at the very edge of the door.
>>16673709
Fuck I'll take a pic when I get home. There's a dent where I tried and then another on the other side where the last owner tried. Didn't see his dent till after I fucked up. Everything seems so flimsy I'm afraid to jack it anywhere.
>>16673694
On the actual frame rails, on the front and rear, there is a section where the metal plating is layered over itself. about 4 inches long. You can jack there as long as they arent rusted away.
>>16673762
Yeah, you made the same mistake I did. I tried to use those rails towards the center of the car as a jack stand point and that isn't the correct spot.
What you CAN do is follow those rails until the end and there is a little reinforced square patch that you can use as a jacking point, this is how i elevate the front
But they aren't for jackstands.
For jack stands, use the plasticy looking black part on the skirts like pic related
>>16673795
>>16673762
And then make sure you leave the jack in place too just as back up. If I am working on the rear of the car, I use the differential as the jack point.
>>16673264
>not taking the opportunity as an excuse to swap in the hottest meme engine you can find
Harbor Freight sells rubber jack stand pads. I use them for our 3's rails although my set is red and has more of a slot in the middle that the rail drops right into.

Would running 10mm wheel spacers with 40mm of offset be detrimental to my car in any way, shape, or form? They would only be going on the rear wheels
>>16681138
It's not much, but you'll increase wear on the bearings and the studs will be shorter, so less thread engagement. You're probably not gonna chew them up quickly but still. I'd at least get those extended ARP studs just for the engagement.
Are there any kits to get longer gears in an NA?

>>16673300
Body roll isn't actually slower. Limiting body roll transfers weight onto the outside wheel, loading it up even more and actually reducing the performance of the car. You're better off just getting used to the feeling that you're about to flip your car over and just pushing it harder despite that. It's faster than running fat sway bars like Toyota did with the FR-Z86.
>>16693123
Lol I recognize this troll, no one said it was slower. Adjustable sway bars make the car better, your line of reasoning is like telling someone not to put a roll bar on the car because it makes it heavier.
>>16693208
>Adjustable sway bars
They exist, but they're rare and expensive. And a sway bar is not a safety item like a roll bar. And even then, I'd urge caution when purchasing a roll bar for the street: for the NA and NB, only the Hard Dog Ace and Deuce bars are safe to use without a helmet (and clear a hard or soft top at the same time), and they won't pass the broomstick test for a track day.

It's an okay car, but mostly just a novelty. Mid-engine isn't necessarily better, it just offers a different set of design constraints. It is running a stock ecu. I have the coolant bypass on the manifold removed, intake and strait pipe exhaust, street ported intake manifold, larger injectors, also a camshaft from a mx3. The stock ecu handles it all fine. My idle is about the only thing affected, fluctuating constantly. But the car runs very well.
While it can handle it, the stock ecu is not running everything as efficiently as it could. That is its limit, it is only set for certain perameters. A full standalone would really me me reap the last few bits of power available, because they are fully tunable.
Since it is jut an assistant to the main idle valve, not much is affected when you remove the coolant bypass on the intake manifold. Some have claimed a change in idle, I saw no difference. As long as you seal it you should have no vacuum leaks.
Just like the charcoal system it's nice to remove to clean up the bay, and little will change.
>>16669427
learning a manual is easy, just take it slowly when the car isnt moving and while you are learning give it a bit more throttle than you think you need so you dont stall. once you are moving its piss easy

Are the stock wheels 15x6 or 15x6.5?
>>16693758
yeah that does suck
maybe i just have such a hateboner for autokonexion at this point
>>16694122
Yeah, wouldn't recommend it. Any roll bar designed to be used at the track is going to be as tall as it can be and still fit under the stock soft or hard top, which means it's going to sit far enough forward that hitting your head on it is a concern. Hard Dog makes a couple of bars that mount further back so you can't hit your head on them unless your seat fails completely, but they have to be lower to clear the soft top so you'll end up an inch or two shorter if you flip the car, especially if you happen to have a helmet on at the time. Still, it's better than getting pancaked flat.
>>16694989
isn't that what roll bad covers are for? and you can get some really nicely padded ones so even if you smash your head on them its at worst an "ouch" rather than stitches?
>>16695066
Nah, roll bar padding is designed for when you bump your head digging around for change that you dropped. It won't slow your head down at all when you get rear ended and your melon is accelerating toward the bar at 10 Gs.
>>16695109
oooh, you're referring to if you're high enough up in the seat that your head can hit it is going straight back, rather than going under it.
in that case, you'll probably need a very very low racing seat so your head can pass under the bar
>>16694761

Noise while driving or staying in place in any gear between 1,5k and 2,5k after that it goes away i can only describe it as "wub wub wub" its noisier than the engine. The frequency doesnt change with speed or rpm.
Anyone have similar experience please tell me what can be done to fix it. Its realyl hurting the enjoyment of my car.
1.6 NA btw.
Yes, i have searched all over the internet.
>>16695124
I still wouldn't recommend having a bar anywhere in the vicinity of your head. Things deflect a hell of a lot in a crash. Even when there's little to no plastic deformation, there's all sorts of elastic deformation going on and there's no telling where your body parts might end up at a given moment.
>>16695149
Some sort of strange engine harmonic, maybe? Have someone rev the engine up until it makes the noise, and then brace yourself against the valve cover to try to keep the engine from rocking. If that changes the volume or quality of the sound, consider new motor mounts. If it happens while sitting still, it won't be anything in the suspension or anything in the drivetrain behind the transmission input shaft. If clutch in/clutch out in neutral makes no difference, it won't be anything behind the engine itself. Do you have an aftermarket intake or exhaust? It seems unlikely, but I suppose it's possible that that's just how it sounds.
>>16695204
Thanks, will try it next time i go to work with the car. Everything is completely stock.

Retractable or solid? If it's solid, you don't need to plug the hole.
>>16695326
It had a shitty aftermarket rubber antenna. I suppose I could just remove the antenna and leave the base, but I'd like to plug the hole and remove the base if possible.
>>16695338
Just leave the base until you're ready to jbweld a plate in behind the hole and bondo over the top.
>>16695358
Yeah, that's probably for the best, I'll leave the base on till I can get in an properly weld in a plug. I don't want to pay for the paint work, but oh well, I want to debadge the rest of the car anyways.
Thanks for the advice.
>>16694362

>>16695239

This. 205s on 8s, 185s on 7s, and if you've got narrower than 7s it's time to buy a set of 15x7 steelies from the junkyard. Having wider tread width than wheel width makes your sidewalls sloppy and hurts handling. Having wider wheel width than tread width makes your tires fall off.

>>16697057
You're much more likely to get rear ended than to flip a Miata, despite what the body roll makes you feel. This is true on the track, and it's many times more true on the street. On the track you'll have a helmet so it's not an issue, but on the street, you're trading an incredibly rare and potentially fatal occurrence for a merely somewhat uncommon and potentially fatal occurrence.
Going with the HD Ace bar is a decent way to split the difference for a street car, but you probably won't be allowed to use it on a track because the lower than usual height means your helmet will stick out about it unless you're slouching in a foamless seat bolted straight to the floor.
tl;dr: get a separate street car and track car and use appropriate safety systems for each.
