Need help /dbt/!
I haven't used my sv650 in a year because the battery died. I just replaced the battery with a new one now and the dash and lights come on fine but the engine won't start. It just makes a little buzz noise near the tank (I think) and the FI light is flashing.
What do? It was well maintained and worked fine before the battery died a year ago.
Could it be the gas that's inside? If so, how do I get the gass out to put new gass in?

Buy a $5 fuel siphon from autozone/etc to pull the majority of the fuel out

Then take off the tank, disconnect the lines with some towels since there will be a bit of gas in there. If it's not too far gone you can probably pour a small mix of seafoam fuel treatment and fuel stabilizer in and slosh it around a bit to try loosening up any chunks in the lines

Then just take out the injectors and clean them. There's a million tutorials for that online.

After some googling the temp switch for the fan kicks on at 215F supposedly, which means the bike should heat up until it starts reading ~220-225 max and then start going down.

I guess if you really want to test it you can jump the connectors for the radiator fan plug to see if it switches on. If not then you probably have a bad fan relay.

dee bee tee I might have fucked up. I bought a 1999 aprilia pegasso with a suspected blown head gasket, yeah it had water and oil mixing but I thought it was the water pump so I fixed that. tried getting it started after that and then I found the real problem...

the engine just doesn't like to turn over. the starter solenoid is fried so I've been bridging the contacts, turns over a couple of times and then gives up. ok I thought, dead battery, charged it, same deal. jumped it off a car battery, then a running vehicle, always the same shit. it is impossible to turn over by the rear wheel with it in gear. breaker bar on the crank and it's still difficult, spark plug removed makes almost no difference :c

what do you think is going on here? bent crank? broken rings? botched rebuild? bike has 42 000kms, has had a slide on one side, but only looks to have scratched fairings, for the most part the bike is pretty clean. from what i've read they're pretty reliable, but can't find any info on a similar problem

Only way to really check is take apart the bike.

Sounds like the engine locked up when the head gasket blew. You -might- be able to free it up with a shitload of PB blaster in the cylinders and a lot of turning the engine back and forth.

Can't guarantee the rods aren't bent though. Cylinders will also probably need to be honed again.

any boots that lack twisting and lateral resistance are not worth any money at all, they won't help you in a crash, you need to find things that have a hinge or hard plastic on the side (or an inner boot with a hinge e.g supertech R or daytona boots) because otherwise they're not worth shit other than as slide protection.

I have smx-1 and smx-5, you can bend an smx-5 over until it's touches itself, it's rather useless as a proper safety item though they are nice to ride in. The SMX-1s are basically just shoes.

I had all these misconceptions when I started riding, one being that full length boots would be uncomfortable when the full length boots ended out being comfier than the short ones (the SMX-1s do not get used at all anymore) and the other one being that if it's full length it's gonna be safe.

Know most of you guys aren't really mx/dirt guys but check out the 2018 rmz450. Obviously thats factory and production is going to be a bit different and they copied the aggressive side fairings look of the ktm but I think it looks pretty sick. I'm sure they'll have put it on a diet while adding some much needed power.... but i fear they've struggled too far behind from other manufacturers for any kind of changes to make a significant difference. I'm sure they don't fund their off road programs much anymore other than for the Hella sick supermoto bros.
