Hey /dbt/,

I'm going to take a Pan-American trip next summer. I'm planning to ride from Michigan to either Panama or Argentina, depending on what I can afford in regards to time and money alike. Needless to say, I've never taken a trip quite like this before. I want to make sure that I get the best bike for the job.

My budget is probably going to between $7,000 and $10,000. I'm trying to decide between the V-Strom 650, KLR 650, and Honda CB500x. So far, I'm inclined to go with the Wee - it's a little pricey but seems to have great reliability and better freeway touring capabilities than anything else in its price range. I don't think I'd be doing a lot on very rough trails or boulder-strewn roads.

Any opinions on which bike is the best or any I might not have considered?

>inb4 retarded travel memes

I'd go for the KLR650 or DR650 because they're everywhere and will be easier to get parts for than almost anything else.

There's no bike that will be perfect for every situation that comes up. V strom will be nice on roads but heavy and shitty on dirt.

At the end of the day, it won't really matter. People have travelled all over the globe on CT90's and supersports.

Its true though. Its heavier than its competitors and has less power.

I'm getting my CHP course taken this weekend and had a question.

Why do you guys LITERALLY just leave your helmets on the handlebars of your bikes when you go into a store? Why are you not worried about $500 helmet getting stolen or knocked on the ground and ruined?

Also, if I'm doing that circle bit do I lean the bike into the circle and lean my body out of the circle?
>>
>>16603626
1. You are correct for being worried about this. This is something only retards do. Place the helmet on the ground or secure it using the helmet lock so there is zero possibility of it falling. Even a drop from a table can release teh stored energy in the foam.

2. yeah, for close quarter maneuvers like that you're supposed to position your body to the opposite side to maintain balance. the only time you "lean into it" is when you have speed because that keeps you planted. if you have no speed, you'll just fall over

wee will handle a lot of abuse but if you think your gonna thrash on dirt the klr might be a better bet if you want a mostly ready bike out of the box.
the dr is a better bike in every way mechanically, more power (iirc), fewer problems, better suspension and lighter. but lacks wind protection, but you can add that in pretty easily

Thanks for the insight.

I'll consider the DR650 as well. I'm reading some DL650/DR650 reviews and comparisons on other websites. The impression I get is that both are solid machines, with the DR being not quite as good on the highway and the DL not being nearly as good in the dirt.

Only reservation I have with the DR650 is that it doesn't seem as suitable for very long-distance touring. Michigan to Panama and back is an easy 8,000 miles. However, I do remember a lot of roads in Nicaragua and Costa Rica really required something lightweight and maneuverable. I guess getting a V-Strom would close some doors in regards to rural exploration, a la pic related.
>>
>>16603714

According to the statistics posted beforehand and my vague knowledge of the used bike market, Suzuki seems to be the cheapest of the four and still in the top when it comes to reliability. I guess you gotta make sacrifices. Also aren't the GSX-R 750 and 1000 legendary in every respect?

Greetings, friends!

I am tossing around the idea of getting a dualsport bike. Doing the transamerica trail has always been a dream of mine. Where is a good place to start? I am mostly interested in reliability and off road capability. I don't really give a fuck about feature or HP. I'll admit that I dont know dick about bikes though.

Ehhh technically a middleweight.
600s are supersports (and 675s and 848s etc...), 1000s are superbikes (and 1200 and 1300 ducatis), 750 i4s are kinda neither.

I'm starting to see why this may not have been ideal as a first bike. The mechanic I sent it to (probable "head gasket" failure (actually the head gasket may have been replaced by silicone baka)) had one and told me it literally cannot be driven slow for more than 5 minutes or it will stain the spark plugs.
So, should I ride slow and stop every 5 minutes to clean the plugs or do I just say fuck it and keep the revs happy even though I am completely inexperienced? Is it hard to keep control the first times? I'd like to know before I look like a total idiot cleaning the plugs every kilometre I make.

I want to paint my bike like this one day, when jesus cunt decides it will finally work
I asked around and it takes some €500 euros to have it done by a professional and honestly fuck that
is it smart to take the matter in my own hands?
I alreayd have a compressor, but is a €40 paint gun going to cut it?
do I need special paints and if yes how much can they cost?

it is seriously easy. all you need is patience, the proper stuff (i.e. buy paint from color-rite if you're using aerosol, not krylon or something), and a clean place to paint at the proper temperature.

90% of it is how much time you're willing to put into prep and finish if you don't cheap out or try to cut corners. i painted my bike first time and it came out great.

You're going to stand out on a motorcycle regardless, so you might as well make it look nice to you. It's not like a car where you blend in by default. You are a minority, on any given road you are probably the only motorcycle, and if there is another motorcycle it's probably going to be a radically different one, and you and the other rider are going to be wearing distinct gear.

Bikes aren't for socially awkward, anxious betas who fear recognition and criticism (not even the ones who mask that by shitting on anyone who doesn't blend in). Those people are better served by 10 year old black "luxury" sedans with cloth seats.

>>
>>16604852
>sitting in his garage for almost two deades
It is completely fucked.
the entire inside of the engine will be rusty.

a motorcycle in storage needs to be started at the least monthly and it needs to be allowed to heat up completely to eliminate any condensation that has built up inside the engine.
otherwise they rust from the inside out.

All things considered I'm not really afraid of dying so much as I am of being painfully crippled or dying in a drawn out and painful way. Riding it hard should prevent the plugs from fouling, I've owned many 2t bikes. How are you so clueless?

You dont know how oil works do you?
>>
>>16605007
That is exactly what I said, I am a beginner biker and idk if I should drive slow and let the spark plugs foul and I'll have to stop frequently to clean them, or if I should take the risk and drive moderately hard. Is it hard to keep control of the bike?
>>
>>16605022
Always ride 2 strokes at high rpm
>>
>>16605007
NOT riding it hard is what fouls the plugs he means.

anon you just have to rev it a bit to clean out the plugs every once in a while, take it through a gear or just rev it a few times
>>
>>16605022
blip it for ten minutes when it's warming up
always rev out the revband, don't let it hit the red
go to a smaller jet size because clearly yours are fouling, try 260/270 if yours are stock at the moment
2t is far simpler to deal with than 4t
>>

the smart thing to do would be sell it and buy something more suited to a beginner, a 2 stroke race bike with a plate isn't really a great first bike

You don't seem to know how it works.
You seem to think it keep everything in the engine lubricated when it has no chance to touch 90% of the engine.

you do know we are talking about engine internals rusting when a bike has been stored for two decades without starting right?
>>
>>16605058

Alright dbt patrons, I'm interested in your opinions on some options I'm wrestling with in regards to replacing my old bike with something different.

I've been debating between a Yamaha Bolt C Spec, Triumph Street Cup, Ducati Scrambler Cafe Racer, and a used H-D XR1200X.

The local dealer is clearing out the bolt and letting it go cheap. The triumph and ducati are too new for big discounts, and the HD is used (albeit barely). What would you pick out of the above?

Now you gotta be shitting me, you are so caught on bothering me with your bullshit that you find it impossible that someone took the time to tell me to change jets and ride it properly?

Just ride it properly, By slow i assume the guy actually meant to say do not ride it without revving it out, make sure you actually get the revs up through the gears and when traveling at a constant speed you are better off speeding up and slowing down so you can keep the engine revving, a 2 stroke holds fuel in the bottom end of the engine before it is used, if you are constantly holding the throttle open it never has a chance to build up a considerable amount of fuel in the bottom end and it results in less lubrication meaning it could possibly fail, so all you need to do is let the bike idle every now and again followed by allowing it to rev out which will clean all the built up oil off the spark plug.

t. someone who has ridden 2 stroke bikes for over 15 years
>>
>>16605189
Neither. They all look like the owner enjoys sucking cocks.
>>
>>16605190
Why shitty mane?

I'm about the same 2bh
>>
>>16605129
Maybe Im not as retarded as you, though, and I'm actually going to take my time and be aware of my riding ability to avoid "opening the throttle mid turn" (who the hell...)
More like 55, btw, that thing is old
>>
>>16605207
I'm just disappointed that you bought such a modern classic and shitted it up with your lack of knowledge.
You could literally just google "things to know about 2 stroke bikes"
At first I wanted to give you advice but now I just hope you seize it mid-ride and fall to your death
>>
>>16605204
>reach apex of turn
>roll on throttle
do you never do this?
>>
>>16605245
everyone does this. not doing it results in under steer.
>>
>>16605215
Not him but if I understood it correctly you have to revv it for 10 minutes without hitting the redline to warm it up and then when you start riding let it idle some times (how many times? only in the beginning?) and then revv it again.
>>
>>16605233
Ah so you do admit you havent been useful at all?
>shitted it up
Fouled. Plugs. Literally just that. The rest is the previous owner's mechanic's fault who probably didnt put the fucking head gasket on.
>>16605215
This was actually useful, for example. The bike does 50kmh at the redline in first gear, so I need to be going near that speed frequently. Can a totally inexperienced guy like me handle it on my very first rides?
>>
>>16605197
That's good. Yeah can't waste free shit.
>>16605222
Long day, every day these two weeks I've been 3-4 hrs sleep, + lady probs not gonna go in2 deets.
Maybe I should get 100% wasted and run into a corn field and freeze overniht
>>
>>16605252
All the times. It's a matter of balance between good lubrication and keeping the engine clean.

nono, you will shatter the pistons by revving the shit out of it while cold.
blip the throttle slightly on warm up, once warm you will need to rev it near the red line to clear any built up oil off the spark plugs.

webm related is cleaning the spark plug on my 300 after letting it warm up by blipping the throttle, only takes 4-5 flicks of the throttle to completely clear it and that is running the fuel at a 30:1 ratio.
>>
>>16605262
>>16605262
you don't have a choice. You either handle it or the bike eats shit. they like to be wound out.

that's where you open it though.

You don't roll on and accelerate but you crack the throttle a bit before halfway through the turn, this stops the deceleration of engine braking for the exact midpoint of the turn where you're not really accelerating or braking (nice equal load on the tyres) then you roll on as you pick the bike up and exit.

The two most dangerous points of the turn in terms of likelihood to crash are halfway through trailbraking, and the exact moment you first crack the throttle (but don't accelerate).

that's why a nice and gentle throttle response off idle is desirable on a motorcycle (but you can also temper a sharp one with some rear brake).
>>
>>16605262
>>16605233
Also, if I did rev it to avoid fouling, I would have probably fucked it up for good since it seemed to me as if coolant was reaching the cylinder.

I'm not into animu at all, but bikes are cool and shit so I'm giving it a shot. But yeah, so far it's very fan-servicey and cheesy, but it seems to have nailed the whole untangible love for bikes feeling that got me into the hobby in the first place

Haven't sat on the Harley.

I like the skinniness of the Duc and Triumph, but I'm not really sold on the straight up seating feel of the Triumph. The Bolt has more of a lean that you'd expect and fits the lean I'm used to.

I'm looking for something all year round and have never had a belt drive bike to not have to worry about lubing a chain in wet weather.
