How do I go about becoming a trucker? It's something I always wanted to do if I couldn't get into office work, and, well, the felony fucked getting an office job for me.

It's a class I felony. Child abuse recklessly cause harm that I stupidly took the plea on because they threatened 10 years in prison and I had little to no faith in the public defender.

I didn't hit my kid. I was already on probation for a burglary which was and has been dropped, and wasn't supposed to be in the state I was in, and my 1 year old fell in her crib and bruised her face. My wife's step sister called the police a couple days later, the DA threatened 10 years in prison, and I took the first plea bargain that came my way like a dumb ass instead of taking it to trial like I should have. I'm still with my wife, have had another kid since then, they're obviously happy and healthy. I'm just looking for information on getting into a field where I can provide the things my children deserve.

That charge probably looks better to companies than any traffic shit like DUIs or even a couple crashes. And it isn't a theft charge either which is good. I mean it sucks but with the other people they hire, you will be good especially if you have a solid work history. Company cuck it for a couple yrs and try to get that shit expunged at 7yrs or just become an owner-op and people can fuck off if they want to know anything besides your truckin record.

What's the best time to learn how to truck? I'm 24 and have been driving manual since I was 16. I have literally nothing for me down here and want to be an antisocial fuck as much as possible. Do you always start small and get bigger as you go or can you literally gun for whatever you'd like?

I'm connected to zero other trucker fags and know nothing about the industry but it has fascinated me since I was a kid.
>>
>>16596294
>>16596344
>>16596353
Horrifying. They aren't ignorant, they just don't care about worsening their position. Why change their systems when 80% of drivers will just eat the cost because it's too much of a big hassle?

>>16597408
I also started small 4 years ago. Everyone I know of starts small. Your first year is hardest because you're quite risky and unproductive. Insurance for drivers under 25 is very expensive and that is another entry barrier.

That said, if you're a hard worker you'd be an asset regardless of your experience. Set goals for where you want to be and make sure you're moving towards them. Companies will gladly take advantage of your position and have you grind bullshit indefinitely. Make your moves.
>>
>>16597434
All understandable, my current job has me working 7-7 and fucking shit all round, so grinding mundane things isn't a big issue.

So I guess I could start of with MR licencing at first? And look for something small like moving about landscaping materials? No clue basic ins are with this kinda of stuff.
>>
>>16597495
You're likely going to have to go OTR for 18-24 months. The smaller trucking jobs usually require experience even though it's a hell of a lot easier.

March-May is a good time to start. You'll get your road legs in the summer, and it'll start snowing before you get cocky enough to really fuck something up. Unless you have a large fortune you're looking to turn into a small fortune, you're going to have to start at the bottom doing cuck per mile like everyone else. Don't fuck around getting licences incrementally. Just get the top level and go.

It depends what the other charges were for, but DUI is a huge no-no for potential truck drivers. If it's been long enough you might get lucky though. Look at companies you'd like to work for and see if it's not a deal breaker.

>>16596577

>>
>>16597850
>other charges
There are no other charges, that DUI from 5 years ago is the only time I have ever really been in trouble with the law. It will be off my driving record, wont affect my ability to get insured, but it's almost impossible to get a criminal pardon in this country thanks to our former prime minister Stephen Harper, and I'm certainly not getting one after just 5 years. You're right though, the only thing I can really do is call around. Although I was looking through job listings this morning, and Wal-Mart specifies that their new drivers cant have any "driving-related criminal convictions" within 36 months, so I would in the clear with them at least.
>>
>>16598008
>Wal-Mart specifies that their new drivers cant have any "driving-related criminal convictions" within 36 months, so I would in the clear with them at least.
No, you wouldn't. They want 36 months of spotless professional driving. Wal-Mart only hires the best drivers, it's like the highest position for regular OTR guys.
Prime or CR England would love to have you, though.

10 years is the industry standard. Some of the better ones, like the one I'm leased to, don't care how old it is. It's always a no-go.

>Minimum of 2 years verifiable tractor trailer driving experience

Alright, so I don't have the trucking experience to get hired with Wal-Mart, but their policy on criminal convictions is pretty straight forward. Someone with an old DUI may not be competitive in the hiring process, but according to that it ad it wouldn't automatically disqualify an applicant either.

And I never said I was necessarily expecting to get hired with Wal-Mart. My point was that if they are willing to overlook an old DUI than I'm sure other, lesser companies are as well.

That's another thing is that I don't know what to do or what you need other than the radio and antenna
>>
>>16600032
If you don't need a cb for going to shippers/relievers then why bother? although they are nice if you're stuck on the highway in traffic and want to know what's going on.
>>
>>16600098
I THINK it comes with everything you need except the antenna but my truck came with an antenna. I'm sure setting it up isn't that hard but the instructions are vague and shitty, like they assume I already know how to wire and tune a radio. It isn't as simple as just plugging it in like I thought it would be.
>>
>>16600141
I go to a few receivers that wish everyone had one but I don't have to have it anywhere

>Alright driver put it on channel 2 and when we call your name after we call out 10 other drivers first you can come in

>>
>>16600003
How do you fit in that sleeper? that's gotta be smaller than euro trucks.
>>
>>16600266
Are those really sleepers? I always figured you just keep tools and shit in there. I know there are still smaller KW and Pete sleepers that are close to that but shit like in his pic you couldn't even lay on your back.
>>
>>16600142
Literally read the instructions. The only difficulty I had was that this truck had a different radio in it before so the power adapter that was wired in was different. Shop grabbed a compatible adapter for me and plugged it all in. I read the manual to figure out how the knobs all needed to be tuned, but more advanced tuning can be done by a CB shop.
>>16600326
That silver rectangle above the toolbox is a vent usually seen on sleepers that are ordered without windows. Looks like one of those cramped 'just-in-case' sleepers.
>>
>>16600326
I think it's only meant to be slept in during emergencies. It's basically a fap cabin.
>>
>>16600373
>fap cabin
Ehh, that's not too bad. I could use one of those for the Florida 20-min tropical thunderstorms when I just sit in the truck and wait it out.

Although they would be dirty as fuck in our trucks. The other day I had a brand new truck (got these beginning of summer) and there was half-eaten fried chicken in there from a couple days ago. Fucking animals.
>>
>>16600032
Even doing this dedicated account that runs mostly I-71 and I-75 at least once a month the cb gives me info that allows me to bypass backups on the fly and stay on time. OTR was even more often than that. Of course the radio has to be on BEFORE you get to the backup/closure to do any good.

It looks tiny because part of it is obscured by the exhaust stack, but its a full sized sleeper bed I believe.

They're meant more for occasional use than for full time living for sure, although that being said, I used to live in the Peterbilt equivalent for up to five weeks at a time when I was hauling frac sand.

They're a really common sized sleeper for oilfield and logging trucks up in Ganada :DDD, especially on vocational type bodyjob units with mounted equipment like this unit here.

We mostly use it for storing our personal stuff, and there is a microwave bolted to the under side of one of the storage bins, but it could be slept in if we had a couple of jobs go long.

I once drove 600 miles back to the terminal when the clutch in my company truck was slap wore out. As long as you don't stop, you're fine. If you do stop, shut off the engine, jam it into the lowest gear, and release the brakes before you hit the ignition and hope it fires before you start rolling uphill.

The clutch is really just a convenience for getting started from a dead stop. Otherwise you just use the throttle and neutral to get the engine speed right for the next gear. Speed too high? Just wait in neutral. Speed too low? Blip the throttle in neutral.

Still can't think of how I could have curbed that. I would've had to curb the front tire in order to bring the drive tire to a curb, but I haven't. That's because your IP may not change even after you've changed towers several times. Hitting airplane mode for at least 5 minutes should guarantee your phone has to request a new IP, and if you've moved during that time, you may have hit a new tower that's in a different IP block region.

Can someone here redpill me on what per diem pay is? Some random trucker was talking to me about it and I don't know WTF he was talking about. >>
>>16606355
https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2541196-where-do-i-enter-my-department-of-transportation-dot-per-diem

Fucking google how does it work

If your company PAYS you per diem, which some do as a mileage payment (tax free in addition to your taxable wages) you don't get to claim it on your taxes.
>>
>>16606355
Also tax write offs aren't mobey back directly. When you write off an amount it is deducted from your taxable income and can lower your tax bracket
>>
>>16606355
In straya I can claim roughly $106 per overnight away from home, minus any allowance that the company pays.

I usually end up effectively paying no tax but I have to wait until tax time to get it all back.

Naw, not even a word of it after that call. They just wanted to know what's up / subtly nag me for curbing a tire. I know that costs money, and I'm not dumb enough to curb tires constantly. I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out where that could've happened.

I wonder if my company is shit-hawking over me about a tire problem this week.

>Hook up to a preload trailer at shipper
>Kind of in a hurry, forget to inspect trailer before leaving
>About 100 miles down the road see a rest area and decided to pull over and inspect trailer, DOT has been very active lately
>Flat tire on trailer, passenger side outer front axel
>Fuck. Call maintenance
>"10-4 there's a loves 8 miles away we have an account with, go there."
>"Any particular reason you decided to pull over at this rest area?"
>No particular reason, just doing a routine safety check and caught this flat tire
"OK, head to loves"

Pretty sure they know it was probably already flat and I didn't do my trailer check.
>>
>>16608389
No. You're covered under per-diem laws. The first $60ish dollarydoos you make on the road each day are tax free.
>>
>>16608410
>$1.40/mi
You're dead in the water. At best you're breaking even after taxes and maintenance, not to mention the truck payment.

>>
>>16608454

>>
>>16608454
I just had something like that happen.

>pick up preloaded trailer the other day
>visually inspect tires but don't thump them
>drive 43,000 lb load 400 miles to receiver and park across road for 7 am unload
>start muh post trip inspection
>driver side rear outside trailer tire going flat
>fuck me
>huh inside looks flat too but maybe it just LOOKS flat because this load is heavy as fuck
>thump it, feels ok
>decide to deal with it tomorrow after unload
>wake up, get unloaded, call maintenance
>company sends tire guy
>confirms both are flat but only outside tire has puncture
>inside was flat already or something

And now I'm in a shop for a ruptured battery.
>>
>>16608580
Thump your tires every day, every time you stop.
Eventually you'll develop a sixth sense for it and can accurately gauge a tire's pressure within 5 psi by a lazy kick to the sidewall.
I've got axle weights down pat as well. If I get eyes on the load (not a drop and hook) I can set the axles to within 200# of each other first time, every time.
Still, in 10 years I have never developed a knack for oneshot backing. At least one pullup every time. But I do take joy in swinging into spots other people gave up on. I'm good, just not perfect.

How bad is it really to deal with trucking companies? The internet is full of truckers bitching and whining. I'm sure some of it is legit, but there is also a good chance that there are a lot of loutish, lazy truck drivers who need their employer giving them a hard time or else nothing would get done. Is it fair to say that if the driver acts like a professional the company will usually behave the same way?
>>
>>16616171
Every big company is generally shitty to work for. Some are worse than others but none are anywhere near as good as small companies who know their employees.

>>
>>16616272
So do you think that a smart, professional trucker has a good chance at success when these idiots are the other people working for the same company?

I can be a professional, and when I get into this industry I do not want to be lumped together with these losers.
>>
>>16616272
That's basically the same for 90% of people complaining on the internet about anything. You have to take it all with a grain of salt. They aren't going to take the time to comment on whatever it is unless they are pissed off and there is a good chance that the person complaining was at least partly wrong in the first place.
>>
>>16616315
When it comes to shit like that, you aren't going to get praised for doing a good job so the less you hear from the bosses, the better.
>>
>>16616315
I mean trucking companies are corporations, and every corporation is doing everything they can to cuck you, as much as they can cuck you, by definition.

The other problem is you can't really make yourself stand out from the competition in trucking. You are dispensable. All you can do is drive the speed limit to the place you need to be. Anyone can do this. There's really no way to out perform the next guy.

As far as doing well for yourself, it depends onyour dispatch. If you're there for him, he'll be there for you. So id say yeah, if your smart and intelligent and reliable your dispatch will notice and do what he can to help you out. But there's still a serious ceiling to how outstanding or successful you can be holding a wheel.

I think most of us here do it because we enjoy it for whatever reason, and the pay is reasonable.
>>
>>16616331

The truck has two 8 million btu diesel/kerosene powered burners, and two centrifugal pumps to load water from the pit (through an augered hole in the ice), route it through the burners to heat it, and pump it back into the pit. It's currently sucking 2°C water (up from zero when we started), and discharging it back out at somewhere between 55 and 60°C.
