How do I go about becoming a trucker? It's something I always wanted to do if I couldn't get into office work, and, well, the felony fucked getting an office job for me.

What's the best time to learn how to truck? I'm 24 and have been driving manual since I was 16. I have literally nothing for me down here and want to be an antisocial fuck as much as possible. Do you always start small and get bigger as you go or can you literally gun for whatever you'd like?

I'm connected to zero other trucker fags and know nothing about the industry but it has fascinated me since I was a kid.

I also started small 4 years ago. Everyone I know of starts small. Your first year is hardest because you're quite risky and unproductive. Insurance for drivers under 25 is very expensive and that is another entry barrier.

That said, if you're a hard worker you'd be an asset regardless of your experience. Set goals for where you want to be and make sure you're moving towards them. Companies will gladly take advantage of your position and have you grind bullshit indefinitely. Make your moves.

There are no other charges, that DUI from 5 years ago is the only time I have ever really been in trouble with the law. It will be off my driving record, wont affect my ability to get insured, but it's almost impossible to get a criminal pardon in this country thanks to our former prime minister Stephen Harper, and I'm certainly not getting one after just 5 years. You're right though, the only thing I can really do is call around. Although I was looking through job listings this morning, and Wal-Mart specifies that their new drivers cant have any "driving-related criminal convictions" within 36 months, so I would in the clear with them at least.

Alright, so I don't have the trucking experience to get hired with Wal-Mart, but their policy on criminal convictions is pretty straight forward. Someone with an old DUI may not be competitive in the hiring process, but according to that it ad it wouldn't automatically disqualify an applicant either.

Literally read the instructions. The only difficulty I had was that this truck had a different radio in it before so the power adapter that was wired in was different. Shop grabbed a compatible adapter for me and plugged it all in. I read the manual to figure out how the knobs all needed to be tuned, but more advanced tuning can be done by a CB shop.

It looks tiny because part of it is obscured by the exhaust stack, but its a full sized sleeper bed I believe.

They're meant more for occasional use than for full time living for sure, although that being said, I used to live in the Peterbilt equivalent for up to five weeks at a time when I was hauling frac sand.

They're a really common sized sleeper for oilfield and logging trucks up in Ganada :DDD, especially on vocational type bodyjob units with mounted equipment like this unit here.

We mostly use it for storing our personal stuff, and there is a microwave bolted to the under side of one of the storage bins, but it could be slept in if we had a couple of jobs go long.

I once drove 600 miles back to the terminal when the clutch in my company truck was slap wore out. As long as you don't stop, you're fine. If you do stop, shut off the engine, jam it into the lowest gear, and release the brakes before you hit the ignition and hope it fires before you start rolling uphill.

The clutch is really just a convenience for getting started from a dead stop. Otherwise you just use the throttle and neutral to get the engine speed right for the next gear. Speed too high? Just wait in neutral. Speed too low? Blip the throttle in neutral.

I've got axle weights down pat as well. If I get eyes on the load (not a drop and hook) I can set the axles to within 200# of each other first time, every time.
Still, in 10 years I have never developed a knack for oneshot backing. At least one pullup every time. But I do take joy in swinging into spots other people gave up on. I'm good, just not perfect.

How bad is it really to deal with trucking companies? The internet is full of truckers bitching and whining. I'm sure some of it is legit, but there is also a good chance that there are a lot of loutish, lazy truck drivers who need their employer giving them a hard time or else nothing would get done. Is it fair to say that if the driver acts like a professional the company will usually behave the same way?

I want to be a trucker, haven't started school yet but I am enrolled. I've got a meeting set up with the owner of a relatively small company to discuss the industry in general and a job with them in particular. I got this meeting because my dad is the guy's lawyer. I guess this could potentially work out very well.

That's basically the same for 90% of people complaining on the internet about anything. You have to take it all with a grain of salt. They aren't going to take the time to comment on whatever it is unless they are pissed off and there is a good chance that the person complaining was at least partly wrong in the first place.

The other problem is you can't really make yourself stand out from the competition in trucking. You are dispensable. All you can do is drive the speed limit to the place you need to be. Anyone can do this. There's really no way to out perform the next guy.

As far as doing well for yourself, it depends onyour dispatch. If you're there for him, he'll be there for you. So id say yeah, if your smart and intelligent and reliable your dispatch will notice and do what he can to help you out. But there's still a serious ceiling to how outstanding or successful you can be holding a wheel.

I think most of us here do it because we enjoy it for whatever reason, and the pay is reasonable.

The truck has two 8 million btu diesel/kerosene powered burners, and two centrifugal pumps to load water from the pit (through an augered hole in the ice), route it through the burners to heat it, and pump it back into the pit. It's currently sucking 2°C water (up from zero when we started), and discharging it back out at somewhere between 55 and 60°C.

We are just deicing it, but it's around 8" thick so it takes a while. Its a pain because the discharge hose eventually melts through the ice its sitting on and becomes really difficult to pull around since we have to pull on it with a rope from the shore.
