Hey /dbt/,
Now that Victory and EBR have both folded which bike do you think will devalue faster to the point you can buy the model for under $5000?

I like the 1190SX but I figure the Octanes are more widespread and more likely do be found in a few years.

Also how much longer until Indian pulls a Victory and teases us with something awesome then delivers a re-bagged model instead?

Yesterday I found a parking lot in an industrial park with brand new pristine asphalt that was large and open enough with the parking stall/islands in the middle. So I started bonding with my supermoto, really exploring the handling for the first time in the 2 months since I got it. Have a new Avon Trailrider on the rear, still running the old worn Pilot Power front tire till I get a new front wheel to put the new front Trailrider on, so took some time building confidence in the front end.

Jesus Christ it's a lot of fun. Takes some getting used to coming from sport bikes. Trusting such a tall top heavy bike leaning way over and trusting the tires was the biggest challenge.

After about an hour of rounding a small two corner circuit I was getting really confident. Started out cruising it in second at lower rpm. By the end I was at the top of second bounching off the limiter out of the turns, scraping pegs.

Then I started feeling the rear end break loose on corner exits as I got on the power sooner and sooner. Started getting comfortable sliding it on power. That was probably the most fun I've had on a motorcycle in a long time.

After about two hours I finally stuffed it, got a little too happy on the gas coming out of one of the turns and low sided at about 25mph. I half expected to do it knowing how much I was pushing my limits. Bike slid a bit and tweaked the brake level/master cylinder. I messed up a pair of pants. No real damage done. By this time it was after dark so I packed it up and went home.

Broke off one of the pinch bolts tightening up the master cylinder again... gotta get a replacement. Going to run by the Home Depot in the morning to get the bolt then go hit that parking lot again for a couple hours.

Went back today and hit it again. Had more fun. Can't wait till we get mroe daylight so I can start riding after work again.
>>

How do you half expect something?

about 50 pounds heavier, 20 less HP.

Would be okay because you're probably not a superhero on the bike but there's always the option of like say, fitting some risers to an old cbr600rr or something.

If you're not planning on doing a track day you'd probably not miss the advantages of the 600RR.
>>
>>16579889
older sportbikes have slightly less aggressive riding positions. So if you don't mind the slight inconvenience of old bikes you might prefer a 99-03 ZX6R/R6/GSXR or any CBR600F4/F4i.

cyclist from /n/ here, i get around everywhere just with my bike, but im entertaining the idea of getting a motorcycle. The biggest hold up is the cost

What would be the cost of a fun cheap used bike? something sporty but i'm more worried about fun than speed. I don't need to feel big and macho

And how much would you say on average you spend on insurance/gas/maintenance for motorcycles?

The F4i is only marginally slower and heavier and has fucktons of aftermarket so you can easily get a set of bar risers. It may cost a couple hundred for the setup but you will save enough vs the newer bikes to make up for that and more. They're reliable as hell too so I wouldn't even worry about the age unless it looks all beat up.

As someone who owns a 2006 F4i, this guy gets it. see if you can find one nearby in good shape. I got mine in September after wrecking my Yamaha in an oil spill and it almost makes me glad I totaled my old bike so I could get the F4i, everything about it is perfect to me.

had both. sold the 17s because my dual sport tires worked just fine on road and were a hundred times better off road. Not exactly a slowfag either.

On a kart track it absolutely makes sense to get the 17" wheels with super sticky tires. On the street, not so much. You have to ride super hard to get to the limit of even cheap 80/20 dual sport tires. You are vastly underestimating them.

Pic related, my rear tire from my first track day on the supermoto. If you aren't making your tires look like this on a regular basis you're wasting your money (which is why I got rid of them).

I'm not sure what roads they would be, it's true the SV has a great power delivery and stock gearing for road/twisties riding but go -1/+2 on the 600 and you'll have a better machine for it overall, the suspension especially on a real sport machine makes a big difference over rougher stuff, smooth not a big deal and -1/+2 just "fixes" 600s to me.

I guess it really depends on the intentions of the rider but I'd rather a 600 in most situations.

Shredded the CVT belt on my 50cc scooter today, lol. Spares are only $15 bucks and I was carrying one, but it was still frustrating pulling the damn thing apart on the side of the road.
Side note, I got 4K miles from this $7 belt, usually I get like 1500-2k from them.
>>
>>16580165
why is it better than the klx or crf though?
>>
>>16580203
cause they're damn expensive compared to wr,crf, klx's
>>
>>16580213
congratulations. you're using a supermoto to actually take turns. All I'm saying is for the vast majority of people it won't make a single bit of difference on the road. Most people just buy a supermoto to go pull shitty wheelies through the city.
He even said babby's first supermoto so I don't think he'll be riding too hard anyway.
>>
>>16580219
Fascinating
>>
>>16580192
Where I lived when I had an SV650, a lot of the roads were super tight and twisty and the upright naked SV with handlebars was much better to whip around, especially being lighter than most 600's. Suspension honestly wasn't that big of a deal to me. It's not great, but if you really care, springs and cartridge emulators are cheap. I wasn't doing any track days on it though.

If he wants a supermoto there is no point buying a dual sport. Even if you aren't going super hard, it will be easier to go faster on actually good tires and with a big brake up front.

A vast majority of people buy bikes they can't use to the fullest anyway so no point sperging out over it

>>16580222
way more power, fuel injected, 6 speed, best suspension and chassis, can fit better tires than the KLX
>>
>>16580244
Its just the front fairing, it really looks out of place. The rest of the bike looks great.
I think ill end up with one of these though. After I look at the f4i a bit more.
>>
>>16580230
He said he's new, not that he's poor. Dirt bikes don't devalue by 50% if you scratch them like a sport bike does so I wouldn't consider that a problem for a new rider.

And when buying used sometimes you can even find EXCs cheaper. At least in my area used japanese bikes are more expensive. In order of average price in the used market from highest to lowest in my area (just including bikes relevant for supermoto use);

>especially being lighter than most 600

I don't think SVs are lighter than any 600s, maybe the N would but the S is about 198 kg wet and most 600s hover around the high 180s, gsx-r600 is 187 kg, cbr600rr is around 185 kg wet, I don't imagine there's 13 kg in a fairing but it's possible.

>a lot of the roads were super tight and twisty

I think certain 600s would have an advantage there too, the cbr600rr for example has a 51 mm shorter wheelbase than the SV (which is closer to a 1000s geometry).

I guess it depends on whether you're used to clip ons and such or not but yeah (confidence is everything I know), I mean I get it, the SV is a lovely bike to ride, very nice planted handling but I'm just not sure about "even better" than a 600 up a tight twisty road, maybe I'm just ready for a change and I'll miss it once I swap up, who knows.

>>
>>16580291
Why did you ask me why I liked the 650 more if you're just going to argue with my answer? An SV650 is 30 lbs lighter than a CBR600RR, I also had the naked one which I said in the previous post (it has handlebars), and I'm not sure what geometry figures you're looking at, but the SV was sure as hell a lot more eager to get through those corners than most other bikes I've rode.

I went from a 600 to a 650, riding the same roads. thought I would be disappointed by losing 1/3 of my hp, but the torque and lightness of the SV made up for it and more.

I don't think I'm racer-fast but I keep a pretty good pace. Never had any trouble keeping up with anyone on any bike through twisty roads. May just be the people I encounter but it's not a big deal.
I can tell a difference in the way it handles. I can even tell my dual sport tires are starting to give in if I pick up the pace but most people will never push it on the street anyway. If you're street rossi then good for you, just don't act like you're a majority by any standard.

Yet as I said before: if you want the supermoto then get one, they're fine bikes. Just that the advantages may be marginal if any compared to other bikes or other setups.

Make sure you do research into whatever bike you decide on first, some bikes are easier to swap wheels on than others, and wheels can be easier to find/cheaper as well

also usually easier to get a bike with dirt wheels and swap to supermoto wheels than the other way around because you can just by a caliper relocator

Around $2,000 for a used bike like a Ninja 500/GS500/SV650 from the early 2000's
>And how much would you say on average you spend on insurance/gas/maintenance
Too many variables for insurance. Not nearly as much as a car though. Gas is cheap, I don't even think about it. I pay $4 to fill up. If you get the right bike, maintenance is easy to do yourself. Get some tools, a manual, and some fluids. I commute on a 90's dual sport and have never taken it to a shop. It just werks.

I like mtn biking/cycling but nice bikes are upwards of $1,000 for an uncomfortable seat attached to some aluminum tubes. Motorcycles will blow your mind.
