And then, something like 3 days later, BAM a DB8SP from MY country is on sale. I've called as soon as i could and bought the bike !

I found a parking lot in an industrial park with brand new pristine asphalt that was large and open enough with the parking stall/islands in the middle. So I started bonding with my supermoto, really exploring the handling for the first time in the 2 months since I got it. Have a new Avon Trailrider on the rear, still running the old worn Pilot Power front tire till I get a new front wheel to put the new front Trailrider on, so took some time building confidence in the front end.

Jesus Christ it's a lot of fun. Takes some getting used to coming from sport bikes. Trusting such a tall top heavy bike leaning way over and trusting the tires was the biggest challenge.

After about an hour of rounding a small two corner circuit I was getting really confident. Started out cruising it in second at lower rpm. By the end I was at the top of second bounching off the limiter out of the turns, scraping pegs.

Then I started feeling the rear end break loose on corner exits as I got on the power sooner and sooner. Started getting comfortable sliding it on power. That was probably the most fun I've had on a motorcycle in a long time.

After about two hours I finally stuffed it, got a little too happy on the gas coming out of one of the turns and low sided at about 25mph. I half expected to do it knowing how much I was pushing my limits. Bike slid a bit and tweaked the brake level/master cylinder. I messed up a pair of pants. No real damage done. By this time it was after dark so I packed it up and went home.

Broke off one of the pinch bolts tightening up the master cylinder again... gotta get a replacement. Going to run by the Home Depot in the morning to get the bolt then go hit that parking lot again for a couple hours.

What did you guys do today?

Not on purpose. The stakes are a lot higher, and the speeds. First bike I slid on power was my F4i on a freeway transfer ramp. Scared the shit out of me. Whenever I slide on my R6 it's usually by acident and I make a conscious decision not to get on the power as hard and slow down.

On the supermoto the stakes are immensely lower, I don't care if I drop it, and the speeds are low enough that I'm probably not going to get hurt.

I really wouldn't, they're cool bikes but modern 600s actually weigh less than the 400s of the era did and we've got much nicer suspension and power and FI etc all going for it now.

It's all about the time period, you have to remember before the CBR900RR nobody had actually really gone ahead and built a 4 cyl bike that was light and had power, the modern sportbike paradigm as we know it didn't exist, there were smaller and lighter sport bikes (2 stroke preferably) and faster bikes built for straight lines.

The 400s WERE very light for their day, the gsx-r750 of the 80s had a dry weight of 195kg, what some 1000s have a wet weight of today, while the 400s were coming in at a dry weight of 160 ish kg.

Nowadays bikes like the CBR600RR are 154 kg dry, while the modern gsx-r750 is 189 kg WET (the same as a wet RVF400 for example).

How do i into bikes?

Like what's the bike equivalent of a corolla, civic, jazz or something.

don't mind if it's not too fast. just something comfy to cruise in and easy to work on.

I prefer the look of those cafe bikes or dirt bikes.
>>
>>16575348
alright, but i'll speak in french since i don't know the english terms for thoses specifics parts.

And i probably forgot some parts.
>>
>>16575358
>bike equivalent to x/y/z car

Doesn't exist, everyone likes asking this and there's no real answers.

Somebody answer for what a corolla is could be anywhere from a scooter / maxi scooter, cheap adventure bike like a v-strom 650 or just a standard naked bike.

>don't mind if it's not too fast. just something comfy to cruise in and easy to work on.

So he essentially turned it into a modified 1198 with Bimota chassis?

sounds pretty fucking neat. Have you ridden it yet?
>>
>>16575381

The thing that's cool with the whole swap it's that i can maintain my Bimota in any Ducati store now, wich is great.

not yet, it's a shame because it's ultra sunny and warm outside, perfect day to ride, but yesterday i woke at 11am, worked from 7pm to 1am, drove 700km to buy the bike then drove back 700km again, i arrived at 9h30pm, went to a girl flat, slept something like 2-3h and woke up again.
Now it's 11h47am, still havent slept, i'm completely exhausted, i need some rest, so i'll try to sleep 2-3h more and then ride.
I've just turned on the bike, the sound is incredible.

I don't really know what bike budgets are like

How much are brand new entry level bikes and high-end bikes to give me an idea.

I don't think I would want to spend too much. Is a $3-4k budget too little or too much for a first bike to test the waters on how I like it.

Also if it matters I'm a dude who is only 5'5" tall. are bikes all a standard size or are there some better suited for smaller dudes.

only started having some interest after watching some Japanese documentary on deliquent teen biker gangs lol.

not interested in scooters and shit

4 for a first bike is a lot
Generally we recommend 1,5-2k for a used shitbike
Cruisers are better for short people as they are lower
Dirtbikes/adv are instead quite tall

Since you are american you could go for a gs500/cx500 and rice it out
They are cheap bases people often use to make cafes
>>
>>16575425
With 3-4k you should be able to get a 5-10 year old beginner bike in good condition. We're talking fuel injected, liquid cooling, four stroke, between 250-650 cc (depending on whether you like torque or not; with cruisers look for up to 800 cc), single or two cylinders (or maybe a tame 600 i4 naked bike like the Honda Hornet or CBF600). Of course you'll also need gear which should set you back around 500-1k. Try to buy in closeout sales, don't buy helmets used.
If your budget is tight, you can get older beginner bikes (around 20 years old, decent condition, carbed and either air or liquid cooled) like the CB 500 or GS 500 for around 1-2k.
Never finance a bike unless you're filthy rich, never buy new unless you're filthy rich.
Your body size shouldn't make a difference, Japs are mostly manlets so any streetbike of the big four (Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki) should fit you. There's also a video of a 5' manlet on a big BMW, it's doable.

For new prices look at the dealer sites. Brand new beginner bikes are around 6k IIRC but you should be buying used at least for your first bike, because you WILL drop it.

TL;DR
get gear
spend 2k on 500cc shitbike like GS or CB 500 (though Ninja 250s or 300s are probably easier to find in the US)
>under 100 horsepower
>upright riding position (check cycle-ergo.com)
>tame engine (no supersports)
take MSF course or equivalent
the more lessons the better

Good luck.

Oh and definitely do NOT get a "project" bike as your first, you want something that works and is reliable. You want to learn to ride first, that's kind of hard when it's in the garage for weeks on end because the carbs are clogged and you can't get them

Oh, Re: wrenching.
Standards / nakeds are easier to work on since you don't have to remove as much stuff to get to the working parts.

Good posts.
Read the sticky also.

>wat bike is good
Go for a lightly used learner bike, steer well clear of supersports. Your first bike won't be your last. Steer clear of specialty bikes in general, they teach only one style of riding. +1 on avoiding project bikes. Same rule applies to chinese shit for the same reasons.

>how to start riding
Take one or two lessons so you can sit on and ride a couple of different styles of bike. Get your own bike and then do some more lessons, you now have the ability to practise skills in your own time before you take your test.

>I'm just cutting the rubber boots that are holding them on off because I'm fucking tired of trying to free them.

Cut with blade, not with saw or crumbs can enter engine. Have you completely removed the clamps holding carbs to boots? Another technique is to unbolt some boots to move the carbs a bit then free the boots. WD-40 sometimes helps.

I've never had to cut a boot in decades of carb work. It's all about small movements and worth doing so you learn how. See real Honda forums and check Youtube for the various Shadow removal videos.

I sometimes leave cables attached at the carbs and disconect them at the throttle grip for convenience. It makes no difference, whatever works is what to do.

Every winter so about every 11k km / 7k miles. The manual recommends 6k km / 4k mi, but the bike was designed in the 80's and I use synthetic now which was not readily available (or even invented?) back then. It even instructs you to use motor oil as chain lube.

>They closed victory down because it was stupid to compete with themselves.

They closed Victory down because it wasn't competing with anything. Follow the industry, not shitposters. The industry is much more interesting. Vic sales were dead for a long time. They are impressively ugly, have near zero aftermarket, and while their drivetrains are excellent so are everyone else's at this point.

Parts will remain available but why bother? The world is full of motorcycles.
>>
>>16575920
40k miles with no major issues, valve adjustments are a bitch but mine didn't need anything until 36k. Only buggy thing I had was when they put the kill switch together they trapped a wire under one of the screws which would cause the bike to cut out when it rained. After tracking that down, no problems.

The paint is crap, but everything coming out of Europe is probably the same way.
