It's not that the sizes change, I was taught when rebuilding V8's:

new cam-new lifters OK
old cam-new lifters OK
new cam-old lifters DISASTER
old cam-old lifters OK as long as the lifters go back on the original lobes

I would just hate to think of trashing a cam because I was too cheap to buy an unused $7 shim.

i have jerky acceleration on my bike at certain rpm ranges

I don't think it's the clutch, I feel like it's a fueling issue because my motorcycle has a slight misfire when idle and reluctance to rev from very low in the rpm.

The injectors have been cleaned, the fuel pump works well ( no problem reaching rev limiter), the clutch works well to not grind any gears when shifting

it just feels like it lurches while under constant throttle and I can't explain why.

should my rear sprocket have any rotational play? along the same axis of rotation as normal I mean, it can rotate maybe a quarter to half an inch forwards and backwards. No side to side movement however.

I think I need to replace the cush drive and my chain. sprockets should be fine, bike only has 15,000 miles.

I'm going to check real quick. Honestly, the chain is kinda loose but within what I thought was the interval. Less than half an inch if pulled to the rear of the sprocket, but definite movement if pulled. maybe a quarter.

I'm pretty much maxed out chain adjustment at the wheel, so maybe I just need to pop out a link or something. It has been stretching though or the adjustment has shifted because it used to be tighter.

Alright well, no seized links but some are definitely harder to rotate/play with than others. Some squeak when rotated, but no seized links. I applied lube earlier today when I noticed noise coming from the chain while coasting under no throttle input and it removed the noise completely but the surging remained. You think I can get away with taking out a troublesome link or should I replace the entire chain? My chain has no clip either, I think it's only possible to remove it by removing the front sprocket.

Complete loss of power for a few seconds is a far cry from what I feel, that's pretty crazy. My air filter might need changing because of my extensive time at high rpm and the vent tube from my crankcase feeding into the air box but definitely not a complete loss of power like you're describing. It's more of a subtle surging.
