Sportbikes modded for touring duty can be good but there are some issues.

Like you mentioned, most if not all pure sportbikes are going to be terrible for 2-up riding.

Sportbikes are not engineered to tune out vibrations. A sportbike will almost always be more uncomfortable on the NVH front.

Fuel mileage both in miles per gallon and miles per tank will be worse on a sport bike. Most get around 35-0mpg and around 140-150 miles to a tank if you're being ginger when most touring bikes can squeeze 200+ miles out of a tank.

Touring accessory options are typically very limited with most sport bikes, there are a few exceptions but expect some form of fabricating an existing solution to fit or only finding small soft bags for a sportbike application.

Unless you go literbike or bigger (bye bye fuel mileage) expect poorer low rpm performance compared to a dedicated sport tourer. Not a big issue for some people, a huge issue for others.

Converting a sportbike is a bad idea. Shit like adding risers, lowering pegs etc is a neverending and expensive way of finding the next weakest link, then eventually you find that your knees don't lock into the tank anymore because of the out-of-design ergos and that your mongrel bike is hard to sell.

If you're going to do any seriously long trips, you'll find your converted sportbike will get on your nerves.
>no luggage tiedowns
>only small/generic soft bags available
>soft, agressively profiled sport tires square off in no time
>suspension/geometry too stiff and twitchy for long interstate sections
>2 up is cruel to your passenger
>no center stand for daily chain lube
>alternator output barely enough to run headlights and CDI
etc

Get the right tool for the job basically.
>>
>>16358492
Repeat that in American, cowboy. Yaknow, inches, feet, nazi heatometers.
>>
>>16358485
As someone who's ridden sportbikes exclusivly in their 20's and 30's. They are fucking too uncomfortable for sport touring.

Spend two hours on a sport bike and you are hating life.

They are """comfotable""" for hour long stints or less. but put any real distance on a sport bike and you will be wishing for something more suited for the job.

I rode my F4i from outside LA to the Bay Area up the PCH in my 20's. Was an 9 hour ride. I swore never to do it again without the right bike. And that had a $300 Corbin seat on it. It literally was painful on wrist, arms, back, and ass. And two hours into such a ride you can forget any meaningful "sport" riding because your throttle hand is too numb for anything resembling good throttle control and you're too sore to move around in the seat.

On my R6 it would be death.

People do sport tour F4i's but they set them up for it properly. I had stock height clipons and rearsets with the only "comfort" mod being a very nice Corbin seat.

With risers at least I would have been in a lot better shape.

Now riding 2.5 on my R6 out to Mulholland is almost enough to make me cry. but it's got the stock plank seat and I'm older now. Usually I take a good 30-45 minute breather and eat something to recuperate before hitting the twisties.

There is no way i would tour with a naked bike.

Even commuting on my WR is annoying compared to my R6 because of the wind blast. And my R6 has a babby fairing meant for tucking.

With a real touring fairing you can get real comfy.

"wind isn't a problem guys"
t. rides on the freeway for <90 minutes at a time

I've toured heaps on my dr650 and previously trx850. Realistically about 15-20 longish trips over the past couple of years.
>wind tires your arms holding on to the bars
>wind tires your neck from holding your head up
>wind blows on your knees and tires your hips
>wind gets you wet when its raining
>then bitterly cold shortly after
>wind gets you covered in bugs
>wind blows dust, gravel, and twigs into your face

I enjoy the ease of access that a naked bike offers, but realistically you need some wind protection, ie a fairing, for long distance riding.
>>

It is yeah. Had it for about a year. It was a fun bike.

I do have a 250 (with the default gearing though) and it isn't really that fun. It's just basic transportation really, it gets you from A to B but after a while on it you start to think "Hell I could go to work on something nicer that is actually fun or useful for other things like touring or shitbiking".

I think the key might be to own something low value that you don't have to worry about much, but not necessarily boring as a 250 with an awful build quality made for 3rd world countries.

As soon as I can sell another bike I have I'll probably get something else to commute on. No idea what though, maybe one of these >>16358744 or maybe a dualsport or maybe some old CBR/VFR (if I can find it) in need of some love or god knows what.

I commute on my 08 dr650, and it's actually stunningly competent. Plus you can use it for all your usual dualsport fun. My issue is that it's a $6k, low mileage bike and it feels like overinvestment in basic bitch transportation. But I'm in no rush to sell because commuting on it is so based.

>>16358758
BMW tempting but I'm well frightened of the maintenance. I know they're reliable, but when it comes time to actually work on it, I feel like they need lots of special tools and the parts can be expensive.

It does tick a lot of boxes, though. I hope they make a decent sport tourer on the RnineT platform because that could tempt me enough to actually buy one.
>>
>>16358608
i think fatigue is part of the journey and why i prefer touring on naked bikes

sweat and grime makes the evening's rest all that sweeter
>>
>>16358777
Just regular oil+filters-type maintenance yearly/enough kilometers and every other year check valve clearance+throttle synch and you´re good to go. Everything is so understressed, that stuff really doesn´t break. Only "special" tool that I need is a beer mug lookin oil filter removal tool(I don´t know wtf they call it in english) and it was something like 5€ at the local tool shop. My bike is a ´95, so the parts for it are not expensive, but I cannot say for other models.
It could get expensive, if you live in the US, because, atleast on 4chan, people complain, that if it´s something even remotely exotic or rare, bike- and car shops will absolutely pillage and rape you out of money. On the other hand, this is 4chan, anything that is more expensive than a buspass is a disaster.

How many miles should I expect a 2009 KLR650 to have? Thinking of buying one. Kelly Blue Book says 12000 miles, but that seems high to me.
>>
>>16359501
High? It's less than 2,000/yr. I live in the northeast and put a little over 6,000 on my bike per year. I would imagine someone living in warmer climates where you ride all year could be around 20,000/yr.

Not high on a per-year basis, but high in general for a new rider who doesn't want to have to replace large parts of the bike soon.

I'm seriously talking out of my ass, the only bikes I've owned are a 50cc moped and a 125cc dirt bike when I was a kid.

So 12k miles is alright? What's a good price for a 2009 klr?

It's not that big of a deal bro. This might just be some bro-science, but think of all the forces involved when your tire is spinning rapidly. You have the weight of the tire, the wheel, and any other reciprocating mass involved in the process - all of which is probably between 15-20 lbs in total. >XT660R: FI master race, 48HP/58NM, 5 gears, 421 lbs wet, 3.3 gal, ~45MPG

If you intend to go offroad the XT660R is just going to be better. Even if you get an aftermarket tank and load it down with an extra 2.5gal fuel (15.5lb) it still has a slighty bettter power/weight ratio, more torque, FI, and more suspension travel.

I would have gone for the R1 though. Not a big fan of European bikes, especially the Italian ones.

What made you choose the Panigale?

Hope to hear from you soon though.

Picking up a Suzuki VanVan 200 as a fuckaround farmbike tomorrow. I'm replacing my ATC90 that finally shit the bed on me, big crack in the block. I pretty much just use it for driving around to feed/water my animals, and dicking around in the woods. I have about 35 cleared acres, and 48 or so wooded acres.

I wanted something light, road legal, and with big fat tires for handling dirt roads and field crossings. The highest speeds it'll be hitting is 35-40 mph on the rural back roads here, and I won't be doing that very often. Anybody ridden one? Any experience maintaining them? I assume it'll be similar to my wife's TU250x but a bit smaller.
>>
>>16361149
Well, besides the styling (I'm still not sold on the headlights and lower fairing of the R1, although the tank and tail are sexy), the Panigale's power delivery and engine character are much more constant. The 1199 still isn't the smoothest I've tried by a long shot, but the R1 has a really weird on/off-like throttle at anywhere below 7-8k rpm in first and second. Not an issue most of the time, but pulling away or trundling through urban area feels weird. Also, the 1199 is more comfortable for me, at 6'1. It's more wrist-heavy than the R1, but the seat's nicer, the tank feels easier to grip onto and the whole thing's just narrow and nimble as hell. Even though there's only like 8kg difference in weight, the Ducati just feels so much lighter and easier to handle.

The dash and electronics on both are fantastic, but I preferred the ability to change things on the move on the Panigale. Obviously, once you have it set up in your preferred way, it doesn't really matter since you won't mess with it much, but the whole thing was just slightly more user-friendly on the Ducati, which I wasn't expecting.

The other bike I was considering was the Aprilia RSV4, which I've liked forever, but having ridden one it just doesn't click with me. It sounds amazing, looks great and handles brilliantly, but it just didn't excite me, which I know sounds stupid when talking about a superbike.

Then of course there's the S1000RR, but I just plain don't like them, no matter how patently fantastic they are in most respects.

Noice anon.

Be sure to ride it and enjoy it.

I have a buddy who's dream bike is a Panigale and he's buying it this upcoming year but according to him he'll never track it or ride it fast because "it's too nice to let something happen to it".

Now while one does whatever he/she wishes with the things he own, I don't think I could ever enjoy having a bike on those terms.

how does liability work when track riding or racing? If you lowside into someone I assume you're expected to pay for their repairs and shit right? Are there special insurance policies that cover such racing incidents?

I bought my dual sport with an aftermarket jetting and foam filter, if I fit a KN road filter on it, will I have to re-jet it? Will I lose power?
>>
>>16361524
I don't really disagree with that, just wanting to know.
Roadracing policy generally the same as MX?

>>16361531
You don't want to put a road filter on a dual sport if you actually ride it off road. But yes, any filter that isn't a direct fit into the stock air box will most likely change flow and need a rejet.
>>
>>16361542
Now is running it without the rejet for a good while do any damage?

it will run poorly, might be prone to stalling, and will probably generate a bunch of extra heat

Honestly though. It depends on if the new filter flows more or less air.
More air = lean
Less air = rich

There is a legal way to change the name on a lien.

However if this guy is doing it as a scam w/ no paperwork it's awfully risky considering he may end up with the title of a crispy husk of something that used to be a Daytona 675.

Vehicles are held to pretty stringent standards in order to be sold for road use. Plus you don't have to change any of that. It's all your preference. Personally I love the nice quiet stock exhaust, bright and visible lights and indicators, and a tail that keeps mud from flinging up on my back.

You made that choice to buy a new bike and continue to make the choice to waste money on cosmetic parts. Suck it up and quit complaining.

After owning 6 bikes I decided to buy new. I only paid 3 grand more than market value of a 3-5 year old one. since it was on special and to me the deprecation is worth the warranty and knowing I've broken it in properly and it hasn't been trashed.

Not really complaining, but if consumers got a say on how new bikes looked I'm sure everyone would want cleaner looking tails, mufflers that aren't the size of your helmet etc. Why have holes for rear bobbins and not just put some in? Why not include tank pads you can put on that fit the tank perfectly that would be mass produced for $1 each cost. You get where I'm coming from?

Well for one most modern bikes come with rather short tail sections that don't even stick out as far as the wheel. I'm pretty sure the tail and license plate have to be on the rearmost portion of the bike so they also have to add that extension to make it at the very rear. Also license plates have to be mounted completely vertically which doesn't really work if it's mounted under the normal tail above the wheel because the tire will hit it when the suspension compresses.

Also such short fenders allow the rain to fly up onto your back. The fender extension that hangs down below the wheels stops that as well as reducing the amount of rain and debris flung up in the air behind the bike.

Pic related. See how the normal tail section is way too short and it takes that stupid cheater fender to actually reach behind the wheel?

This wasn't a problem before the edgy short tail trend started. Yeah there was a slightly ugly plastic piece dangling down to mount the plate but since the actual tail extended to the rearmost point of the bike they didn't have to add a retarded arm sticking off the back of the bike.
>>
>>16362114
Appreciate that. I'll double check plate can't hit the wheel on full compression, I hadn't thought of that as stupid as it sounds but I'm sure it will clear it.

I have to take a lot of stuff to work everyday so for time being the bike is only used for fun and commuting a couple days a week so not too concerned about the rain. Again, something I hadn't thought of. Thanks for clarifying
