If they are anything like the 4900s my company runs, then the interiors are breddy chintzy, and the manual transmissions are notchy as fuck and unpleasant to shift, even after many thousands of miles of wear in. Lots of guys rave about Stars, and they do look pretty nice on the outside, but I don't find them all that nice to drive.

>>
>>16358616
Most distribution centers work on a similar system.
When delivering to a store the driver and store manager record the pallets as they come off the trailer. The pallets usually have an "LPN" (license plate number) to identify them, the DC has a record of what's supposed to be wrapped up in that pallet.
The store doesn't necessarily get exactly what it ordered, but what it DOES get is recorded.
Walmart just prints a label with little stickers that tear off so you can stick them on your delivery receipt, instead of writing down the numbers.

Here in the UK, it's common on rigid-body tippers and also used on heavy semi trucks. Only seen the latter once in person; slightly longer frame with another forward axle, making room for a little crane on the back of the tractor.

Also, I saw a truck the other day with no 5th wheel, but with a little flatbed on instead. It was following another conventional truck, hauling a flatbed trailer with railings, and with flashing yellow lights on the grille. Obviously together; same company livery.
I thought ballast tractor, but it didn't have anything on the bed.
I'd have gotten pics, but I was driving in the opposite direction at like 50MPH at the time.

We've also recently gotten stretched trailers for bulky but light loads. Those are 'dual' steer; conventional tractor but a steering axle on the trailer to maintain turn radius, with a slight spread between it and the other two axles.
They work as advertised; saw one in action a while ago, didn't get squashed on a roundabout.

Outside of oil and gas work I haven't really seen them used in Canada much.

Most of the time they're used for picker cranes and service/workover rig derricks, and occasionally big vac trucks.

> Clockwise
We drive on the left.
> Islands in the roadway
Cars are for scale. That's a big-ass roundabout
> Tornado thingies
Mini-roundabouts. You go around those on your way around the big one in the middle. They're an innovation to alter the priorities on junctions, but without having to do anything major other than dropping a lump on the road and paint some lines. Buses and trucks can just run them over with no repercussions, perfectly legal. And have to.
Some are just straight-up painted on, as they're used as turning circles for trucks to get into tricky entrances.

We also have crap like pic related; a traffic light controlled roundabout with a road through the middle.
In a flood plain.
Whenever the lights fail (which they do surprisingly often), there are LOTS of crashes because nobody knows how shit works.

The red line is correct. The green line is not; you can simply skip around the edge with the leftmost lane there.

And then there's shit like pic related. One-way street into a two-way with traffic islands everywhere around it, and truckers have to thread through it because it's a major route into the town.
>>
>>16359614
No, hang on, you simply skip around the edge with the red one as well, in the right-most lane before changing at the end to exit. The mini-roundabouts are for going against the regular flow of the roundabout and turning right off it.

There we go. Corrected your routing, and added additional ones as demonstrations.
>>
>>16359641
So let's say you got on the roundabout at the bottom-left exit in that picture, got to the second exit and realized you were going the wrong way, then used the mini roundabout to pull a u-turn and proceed the other way on the inner ring back to the exit you entered from.

Is that what they're for?
>>
>>16359662
They can be used for that, but >>16359653 shows how they're meant to be used.
You generally don't go all the way around mini-roundabouts. The vast majority are too tight to do that on anyway.

fun fact: the clutch brake on our yard tug broke, they kept running it as-is for two weeks before they bothered to fix it. You literally had to ram it into gear and let the dog teeth grind each other to a halt. Sickening.
>>
>>16363484
Couldn't you just hold the clutch in for longer and wait for cogs to slow down?
I drove an old merc cabover that had no clutch brake and you just held the clutch in and waited a few seconds then gently put it into gear.

But also, when it isn't your personal equipment of course you don't care about the damage. Especially when it has been noted and not repaired for a while.

They are, but the particular series of Western Stars we run are have a shorter shifter height and the throw between positions feels shorter and tighter. The pattern is the same, but it doesn't feel nearly as smooth as the setup in Kenworths or Peterbilts I have driven, especially when floating gears.

A few other coworkers I have spoken to have made similar comments, so I don't think it's just me.

You miss the point. If you can shift without needing to force it into gear, it's fine. But you said your retard co workers force it into gear, so why why wouldn't they just split them as they are much easier to shift them for a shitcunt or haven't they figured out that splitting each gear makes it easier to shift for those who have issues swapping whole cogs or even a gear and a half.

do you ever watch crash videos to remind you how bad shit can get

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6yr-jhtIaw
>>
>>16363631

I wish I had a good answer to give you.

My guess is that A: the unit is pretty light compared to a lot of the other equipment we haul, so they try to do full gear shifts as much as possible since it "feels faster", and either bog the shifts or try to pin the tach before shifting, B: they barely turn a wheel during their time on shift compared to a what a real trucker puts on in one day, let alone two weeks, so they simply aren't very good at shifting, and C: They're probably dummies that try to float gears with the engine brake on full blast and miss a lot.

I can reasonably say that during the one year of consistent hauling I did previously before coming to my current employer, I did more driving than those guys did in three or four.

I would think it depends on how much volume you can get for loads, and also how long you want to stay out on the road.

If you can consistently get loads and have enough time to get them done keeping your on duty time under ten hours a day, it would make sense to do it since you aren't going to be pounding the pavement all that hard. If you need to rush to make it on time and need to do more than 8.5 hours in the seat a day to be on time, or the loads are infequent, it would make more sense to run as hard as you can into a reset.

You obviously made the right educational choices to get into debt for.

They sure worked out for you, what do you need to study these days to become a steering wheel attendant.

Probably $75-$100 a week, but this is in Canada so prices are higher, also I don't scrimp when it comes to food:

Bring:
Canned stuff - Soups/Chili/Pasta/Stew etc.
Bread
Salami
Good cheese
Pepperoni
Pickles and hot peppers
Granola bars
Milk and cereal on occasion
Canned coffee for when fresh was unavailable
Chocolate bars
Snacky stuff like Crispers
Condiments
Homemade breakfast sandwiches for easy breakfasts
Bottled water
Easy to eat veggies/fruit

Buy on road:
Hot coffee mostly and occasionally a cheap meal to break up the routine.

Yeah boi!

Had the longest day of work in like a year today with everything going wrong. But they gave us Monday off too which I'm stoked about. And normally if we get a Monday off for a holiday, we gotta work the next Saturday to make up for it so we always end up running 5 days no matter what. But I guess we are off next Sat so it will be the first 4 day work week in the 3 years I have been there.

Yeah, breddy much. Piles of wildlife to see.

Lots of deer, elk, moose, mountain goats in the Rockies, the occasional rabbit, bear, coyote or fox, very rarely bobcats, mountain lions or wolves.

Way up north, you'll see herds of caribou and bison, who are stubborn fucking jerks.

I've been pretty luck in that the only wildlife strike I have had in the past couple of years was that I clipped the head of a deer with my bush bumper when it ran out from my side of the road, stopped in the middle of the road because of an oncoming truck going the other way, and went to turn around just as I was going by.
>>
>>16365467
The reality is that you run whatever is necessary for the load you're on and then recaps until the hours coming back put a limit on how you run. For myself, without any particular consideration to the 70, I could run months without a reset.

Efficiency is having a bulk trailer that gets used for 3 weeks of the year?

That same flat bed carries lumber, slung cement, styrofoam containers, water tanks, etc. etc.

A bulk cement trailer would only be used for that and sit for over 11months doing nothing and it can't even travel on 30% of the highway seeing as our highways force euro cabovers trailering 20ft containers into 15 point turns to get around some corners.

It just doesn't make sense to invest in something you can't use. That's not even considering who can load and unload it.

Yeah '99 blazer. Just watched a couple YouTube videos on how to replace the pump. I could probably do that, problem is I have zero equipment, not even a socket wrench set. I'd need jacks and jackstands, plus the tank is near full right now so I'd need a few jugs to siphon about 15 gallons of gas into. I just don't feel like fucking with it right now, because what else is about to break? This blazer is old and worn out.
