Sucks I don't have a garage, that tent is occupied and we have no room for another. I feel bad for leaving the little guy out here in the cold. I have work to do on it but I have to wait til spring now.

I know how to clutch kick. Handbrake is important for reasons other than initiating a drift. Like increasing the radius + angle of a drift and scrubbing speed mid drift. Watch the part where he talks about high speed entry https://youtu.be/XI29zrUBx4Q
>>16333009
Would better pads and slotted rotors help them bite harder? Maybe extend the handbrake for more leverage?

How much power can I expect to gain from putting an NB1 head and intake manifold on my 1.8 NA miata, lapping the valves, clean up the casting in the runners, gasket match, shave the head to achieve 10:1 compression, polish the combustion chambers, Megasquirt tuned for 93 octane, NB1 injectors, MAF delete, header, catback etc.

Maybe 150 whp? Is it even worth it? Why do these engines respond so badly to NA tuning

>>
>>16334338
I have them on mine - they're OK. I kinda feel like I should've just saved up a little more and gone with Koni Sport shocks and FM lowering springs - and I probably will when my Teins crap out. Considered V-Maxxs but got mixed feels; the collars for them grind against the axle-shafts on my dad's NB and a friend's car, and another friend's been running a set for years and hasn't had any issues.
>>
>>16334262
They would bite a little harder, might help. So would going to larger brakes. More surface area, more to grab. Tightening the cables makes a big difference.
>>
>>16334428
Search the miata forums. This has been covered many times and if you search dyno results on forum.miata.net you can see what people are putting down with what mods in almost any scenario.

With everything you listed, (the mega squirt being the most important.) and if you can tune half decently. You'd probably get 140whp-150whp, max. Ad higher compression, Cams, ITBs and every other little thing and you may get 185whp. E85? another 5%.

People with dedicated N/A track cars are getting this power or more. But their engines only last 60-80 hours before needing a rebuild.

These motors just respond better to boost, it just is. These cars can make 200whp-300whp with a turbo setup done right. You'll be in the same cost but with a much greater power output. Going N/A is a choice that people make because they like the feel and the way it drives.
>>
>>16337661
I don't know how anyone has the heart to lock their NA or NBs. You really go to each door and manually lock it with your key every time you park it?

Of course, if I had a key fob like the NC and NDs come with, I certainly would lock it
>>
>>16333754
Nah its. Bo mur and he knows what he has
>>
>>16337861
My NB had remote central locking. Can't find a picture of the fob but it was some rubbery oval thing with two buttons on it that was separate to the key
>>
>>16337861
>>16337914
Looked like this, come to think of it it must have been an aftermarket part
>>
>>16334338

>>
>>16337861

You keep the passenger side locked because solo driving most of the time (and if you do need to lock it you reach over while inside). And you lock the driver side at the inner handle when you leave the car then hold the outer handle open when you close the door to engage the lock. Easy peasy. NA, btw.

hi /mg/. I'm in a dilemma.

I've narrowed my choice in my next DD down to a couple of cars: an '05 Mazdaspeed Miata or a 2nd gen WRX not owned by a boyracer hooning faggot.

There's a couple of possibilities for each model but I can't decide between the two. I learned manual transmissions on an NA, I dailied an NB for awhile and loved it, and the Mazdaspeed is super appealing. However, I live in a snowy area of the midwest with pisspoor road maintenence and can't deny that'd it make more sense for my area to drive an Impreza.

I also understand I'll get biased answers here, but genuinely curious on your thoughts, especially those that have driven/owned either Imprezas or NB/MS Miatas.

It's wild that your 5'10" friend actually has a problem with fitting in a NA Miata. Wild enough that I might not believe he's 5'10".

there are dudes that are 6'5" 195lbs and fit in a miata just fine without making any changes to the car.

must be you and your friends body type.
>>
>>16342002
It might also be your tolerance for what fits and what doesn't
>>
>>16342002
6'5 no fucking way, no chance in hell. I didn't fit--legs or torso-- in my friend's NA with a sparco.

I'm 6'2 175 and I don't fit. My friend is 4 inches shorter than me for sure and he's not fat either.

I mean, if your idea of fit is being crammed inside and being able to close the door... that's not really fitting, is it? I'd define fitting as being able to get in a car and push the clutch all the way in and having your leg very slightly bent. Not only could I not do that but the top of the windshield became a visibility hazard. My friend -just- fits.

It's fine, they make RX7s for the real men, you know that right?

I am looking for some opinions guys.

I am going to be buying new tires for my new (to me) NA. It is only going to be used for autocross. I am just going to use the stock 14's for now until I do a few mods and save up for wider wheels. From what I am seeing there are really only three options.

Prices listed are for a set of 4 shipped from Tirerack.
$364.88 Yokohama S.drive 185/55/14
$411.32 Falken Azenis RT615K 195/60/14
$565.68 Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Spec 185/60/14

Things to keep in mind. This is going to be a two driver car. I live in the south which means its going to be a hot climate. I will be driving ~310 miles round trip to the autocross events. This tire needs to last the entire 2017 season.

Of course I am leaning towards the Yokos because they are the cheapest. Also I have heard that the Azenis overheat easily in hot climates with multiple drivers but it would be nice to have the extra grip the Azenis provide over the S.drive. I included the Direzza just because. Not really sure if its worth the extra $150 or not.

I made this strawpoll if you would rather answer that way instead of replying with a comment.

>>
>>16349972
first of all, get rid of your stock 14s and get some nice 15x7s

second of all, just go with the yokos. they are solid and last twice as long as its competitors

It has a lot of modding potential and it's affordable, pretty simple. Also straight line speed does not have the monopoly on fun

Horsepower isnt the point of this car unless you bring it to Flying Miata and they do an LS swap and thatll bump you up to 520hp.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLONL8ax9CI

or alternatively you can just turbo the stock motor and it'll be a bit faster.

drive a first gen miata and it might change your mind how you feel about them, unless youre one of those people that absolutely need a shit ton of horsepower to have fun.

>>16357083
I shouldve mentioned that I was talking about first gen Miata when it came to turbocharging it.

Because its cheap to own, cheap /easy to fix and upgrade.
When you want to have fun with a car, these matter way more than the power. Because if you are interested in learning how to drive, not just operate a car, you really want to start getting out of your comfort zone. And you don't want the thought of wrecking your more expensive car looming over your head when you overcook a corner and have to start slipping and sliding.
There are other cars that are also cheap, easy to fix and upgrade, but the Miata offers a good weight distribution, light weight, and RWD.
And when it comes to upgrading, especially for the track, buying the cheap car leaves you money for upgrading components to legit track spec stuff that is way better than the things that come on OEM cars, especially suspension. It also leaves you money to buy wheels with semi-slick tires.
All of this equals more time driving the car at the limit, which gives you the necessary experience and skill to drive faster cars properly. You don't get that kind of experience when you buy a higher performing car and become too afraid to wreck it, or can't afford to take it to the track.

ok /mg/ i have run into a major problem, i recently bought a NA and did not look at the pink slip. the new owner information was filled out and signed, and because it was signed and i don't have a bill of sale from the man who signed it i can't register the car. when i tryed contacting the guy i bought it from, the original title holder and the guy who signed it they have completely ignored me. how fucked am i? no one has reported the car stolen, and i still have the pink slip.

It's hard to get a car to open the thermostat when you're driving on the highway, too much air is flowing through the radiator. Cars actually get hotter when stopped.

To burp the coolant system, find a funnel that fits in the radiator. Fill the funnel with coolant, turn the car on and let it warm up a bit. Then rev it up over and over. You're gonna need to rev it pretty high to get all the bubbles out. When the radiator fan turns on then you know the thermostat has opened

It has direct injection, pre-detonation isn't an issue at least. People do high compression turbo builds all the time. A few kits have come out, they recommend starting out with 3-5 psi, however they have a shop car pushing 13 psi making 259rwhp/291rwtq

dude just make up a bill of sale. unless you live in some meme state where it has to be notarized and shit, there is zero reason you couldn't just fabricate a bill of sale. absolutely nothing on it is verified or even used during the registration/titling process.

guys im going to go check out a '91 NA this weekend because the guy didnt understand my question about SNC and seems to be a bit of a language barrier.

Im a fuckin retard and dont know shit about cars, where is the crankshaft? I understand im looking for 8 slits as opposed to 4 slits (SNC) right? any advice would be appreciated.

Momo and Nardi seems to be like the only brands that are worth considering. Miatas have come stock with both, and you can find them in cars that are much more exclusive like Porsche and Ferrari.

Buy some hella h4 halogen enclosures and pop in literally any decent halogen bulb. Sealed beams are shit.
>>
The cigarette lighter in my 2000 stopped working during a road trip to SC and I'm wondering if it's going to be as easy as popping a new one in to fix the issue. I honestly only need it for my phone charger so would it be reasonable to replace it with some sort of USB connector instead? I can only imagine that it would be a minimal amount of wiring and shit but I've never done anything like that before. Anyone ever fuck around with mods like that?

all these things lead to excellent driving expirience

Personally, the manual transmission is a huge part of it. There is just something so visceral and mechanical about a classic stick shift that isn't plagued with meme electronics. You can bang through the first 3 gears like a mad man and still be under 100mph, the engine is roaring at you, you got initial D blasting, you heel toe from 4th to 2nd to take this upcoming turn, your body slams against the door from the centrifugal force yet somehow the tires are still holding, etc...

It's just nice man. To be honest, I think most of it boils down to the size and seating position. It feels more like a toy than an actual car which is probably why it's so fun
