Volvos do have a decent interior, especially compared to freightliner.
Also enjoy your maintenance costs from shit breaking all the time. Neither Volvo I drove went 1 month without something sending it back to the shop. Not saying Freightliner is much better, but it was more often something repairable with a screwdriver.

I'm sure automatics are fine if they work well. I've worked around a few old truckstars that had automatics, and couldn't care less if they shifted another manual gear after twenty plus years behind the wheel.

I would rather have a standard just because they are more fun and engaging to drive.
>>
>>16325020
I will admit that volvos can be finicky if you're unlucky. I know 2 guys who bought volvos together, the trucks were from the same manufacturing batch. One of them was constantly in the shop while the other was totally normal. Hopefully mine will be good. Actually, I guess one of the 2 company volvos I drove was like that, had to get fuel injectors replaced twice before it hit 500,000 miles.

>>16325299

>>
>>16325429
I don't have any official sources on any of this. Less wear is because the auto never grinds gears, or shifts too low or too high. Better gas
mileage is because the auto tries to keep rpms as low as possible without chugging.

>>16325497

I'm guessing you drive on shitty roads if you're doing oil, manual might be better for that because you get a better feel for what your truck is doing. I drive on highways 99% of the time, I prefer automatic. Also depends on which auto you have, Ishift has a manual option, you change gears with buttons on the side of the selector, which is useful on hills. I've heard that some autos dont have any manual option, that would probably suck.
>>
>>16325497
Do you use high low in every gear or just stay in high on second splitter
>>
>>16325576
>Better gas
>mileage is because the auto tries to keep rpms as low as possible without chugging.
Lugging.
And no, it doesn't. Autos will lug the engine, especially when you start going uphill. That's one of their biggest problems. They upshift too soon, and downshift too late. Especially with Volvo's iShit transmission while engine braking, you'll find that it will let the RPM go well below 1000 before downshifting, resulting in the loss of most of your engine brake torque until it decides shift. Upshifts also skip too many gears.

Also, if you have a live fuel readout, try cruising at a specific speed at both 1100 and 1400 RPM in two different gears. The fuel burn will be almost identical. I'd rather have the extra power available if needed at a moments notice, such as a hard stop. (engine brake again)

Volvo's engine brake is very strong though, even at just 1400RPM, I did like that about them.

18sp of automation

After I got them to program it to shift where I would shift, it gets slightly better fuel economy than me. But fresh out of the factory they like to nearly redline the first few gears when taking off at 100% throttle. When climbing ranges it sorts itself out well. But once it is in an appropriate gear I change it to manual mode just incase it wants to do something silly.

As for wear and tear. We'll just have to wait and see as the miles pile up.
>>
>>16325656
You have 3 mirrors per side right? Set them up to eliminate your blind spots. If each mirror is aimed outward to show as little of the tractor and trailer as possible (but still a tiny bit) you won't have any blind spots to your sides. If you don't have mirrors on the hood this won't work, however.

Blue is tall normal mirror and short convex mirror. Red is convex that removes the blind spots next to the cab. Green is that extra down-facing one that's useful when parking next to a curb. I've always driven with all 7 of these mirrors.

Other than the green one, they're all pretty damn useful. Would hate to not have them.

Neither does a seasoned driver that knows what a clutch brake is.

>or shifts too low or too high
Revving to 2300rpm and sitting there before shifting into 3rd or 4th, then jumping between gears without skipping any speaks to the contrary.

>Better gas mileage is because the auto tries to keep rpms as low as possible without chugging.
1) no it doesn't
2) low rpms aren't where fuel economy are in a heavy diesel. It's at peak torque on the torque curve.

I was running the Rockies with an Eaton Ultrashift the last two winters without a problem. The thing to remember about automatics is that they're SEMI-automatics. You do need to participate some in what it does by anticipating situations like you would with a manual and using manual mode when necessary.

>>16325651
>They ... downshift too late.
Hasn't been my experience with the Eaton. If anything it's annoyingly touchy on the downshifts.

>>16325683
>But fresh out of the factory they like to nearly redline the first few gears when taking off at 100% throttle
With these Eatons it progressive shifts at no more than 1400 in the Low range and will allow up to 1600 in the Upper at 100 percent throttle. I don't usually go 100 percent anymore because there's no point. Feels positively glacial which is about the only thing I truly don't like about automatics. It's ok as a highway trans but totally unsuitable for in-city work
>>
>>16325932
Uh naw I'm in a '13 with a new Eaton-Fuller 10 speed auto, and it does not progressive shift at hammer down. It roars up to about 2450 RPM and skip-shifts. It also downshifts way too late at all times and upshifts too early up hills. I drive it in manual mode 100% of the time now in order to save it from itself.
>>
>>16325651

I think it might have been an Ishit, but I had to move one in our yard once. It started itself in 2 and as soon as I started moving it immediately jumped up to 5th with almost zero throttle input. Then I had to make a sharper turn and I think the computer went full on panic mode as it shifted through each gear back to 2nd rather then going straight there.

Absolutely pathetic
>>
Clearly we have had different experiences with autos.

>>16325882
>Neither does a seasoned driver that knows what a clutch brake is.

Even a seasoned driver occasionally fucks up.

>revs and then jumps between gears without skipping

Pic related. See that green band? That's where my tach stays. And it skips gears when it needs to, I rarely see 2nd gear. The only time it over revs is when I use engine brake while going downhill, it jumps to 1700 max, so I usually keep it in manual when engine braking

>No it doesnt

Yes it does.

>>16325932
>They're SEMI-automatics

This. Like I said before, mine has a manual mode. I use it when driving downhill. Uphill its usually fine, I occasionally have to kick it down a gear when going uphill, but I dont even have to switch to manual to do that, it figures it out from there and keeps the rpms higher for a while

>>
>>16326002

Yep. That sounds exactly like the iShit that I know. Those fuckers love 5th, but shit themselves if you then need to go slower. Too many low-range gears, not enough high-range, upshifts too aggressive and downshifts too passive. Everything that makes an auto bad.
>>
>>16325732
I don't know if it's good but I use the fuck out of the far front red mirrors. Takes getting used to but I can almost see everything just from those. I use the big straight mirrors for seeing what's behind my trailer and I barely even use the convex mirrors below the big mirror because I have to turn my head too much and I can see everything they reflect from the front hood mirrors.
>>

Is it just a Kenworth thing for when I pull the parking brake it also sets the trailer brakes? If I need to air up a trailer I have to release the park brake for it to.send air to the trailer.

My old freightshaker only applies the truck brakes when using the yellow park brake and will send air to the trailer too.

Buses always have them bent like that so they can see kids walking right in front of their bumper. I prefer to have mine angled out slightly more than the convex mirrors under the regular mirrors. Helps you see what's even further out if you are backing and turning to the passenger side.

They also help if you have a small car like a Miata or a bikerfag riding right next to the tractor. Sometimes it can be difficult to see them on the passenger side with the regular convex mirrors.

Am I getting bamboozled? How is it a waste of time? You have to look at the door mirror anyway, so you have to turn your head in that direction anyway. How much time does it take you to shift your eyes slightly?
But whatever, it'll be your career that gets ruined when you fuck up and merge into that little hatchback that was riding in your blind spot. Complacency is the number one cause of accidents. No one ever lost their job or killed anyone for following basic safety procedures.

In Australia you dont just go straight into a puppy farm to drive a semi. It is a natural progression of small box truck > ridgid truck > semi trailer > road train. Usually a year or two of experience before even getting in a semi. Tends to lead to better drivers.

>>
>>16328689
A mirror can't see what's in front behind it. If you've got a little fortwo riding right next to your right steer, you won't be able to see it through the window or the door mirrors. It's called a blind spot. The fender mirror eliminates that blind spot.
But hey, why be safe when you can just rely on "spacial awareness". It won't be my career that gets ruined.
>>

ATTN:
Volvo iShift has shift memory and it tries to "learn" from its drivers over time. Company I work for gave me one with legit 240miles on it and I drove it for 500,000miles. Initially, it definitely was a finicky fuck. But by around 10k miles in, it was a dream and shifted exactly how I'd want to.
Once, while helping the shop take a tractor back to the yard, I drove another drivers Volvo and I hated it cuz it wasn't used to _my_ shift patterns etc. Spoke to the mechanic about it and he told me they reset the auto's memory each time they assign a truck to a driver for exactly this reason.

Before the volvo, I drove a 10 spd Columbia ISX and a T2000 with a 13 (I think)

This is a volvo we're talking about, not a 1000hp pete. Its designed to operate on lower rpms. 1700 is too high for my truck that doesnt haul more than 45000 lbs and doesn't go off road.

Australians don't have a lot to hit, and their rules are more lax, so their trucks are fucking huge, and can just bash through anything in their path anyway.
Plus, 'straya is mostly desert, so the worst you're gonna hit is a couple of 'roos, or a shark in disguise as a roo.

Euro trucks are smaller, and thus don't need as many mirror mounts. A mount each side of the cab with one big mirror and one small convex one each, a mirror on the side for the blind spot, and a mirror on the front for the front blind spot so you know when you've collected a small hatchback.

Russians use a mixture of american and euro trucks, in a fucking mess of standards and trailer styles. While they retain the original mounts, I doubt they use them. Or care.
>>
>All this shitposting about fender mirrors and spatial awareness

Just ignore Check Engine lights. It's merely emissions related anyway. It probably even says to wait until the next service visit to get it looked at which means it isn't really important. The only warnings to pay serious attention to are the ones that say STOP ENGINE. Not like you'll have a choice about those anyway.

That'll depend on the company. We have a Western Regional, and a California Dedicated as well, but they're usually full and you have to wait for an opening. Usually that's not more than a few months wait at worst though. A good company may take a while for something to open up. Still, I'd think you should be able to turn up something before too long.

Trailer ABS. They don't work like a car with a rapid on-off application of the brakes. It's more like a one second cycle between brake applications. So when the trailer went down the brakes were applied and then the wheels locked up and the system released the brakes and the trailer went up as the weight shifted forward onto the tractor. Rinse, repeat. FWIW he was probably either unloaded or really light. It's harder to stop an unloaded truck because it's too easy to lock 'em up.

Something else you can do when it's wet and freezing is make sure you use your brakes before stopping so that they're hot enough to boil off moisture before they get cold again. Might even need to do a couple of laps around the truck stop lighty dragging the brakes. This is especially useful with leaky trailers that exhaust the air fairly quickly.
