Looking to start an exciting truck driving career? Companies like PAM, Swift, CR England, CRST, JB Hunt and Schneider all have training programs to get you your CDL and get you in a truck in 3 weeks or less! Plus if you sign a simple work contract you get your training free!
>>
>>16298846

What benefit is achieved by allowing the trailer to tilt like that?
>>
>>16298858
easier access to the bootyhole
>>
>>16298858
You get to fire whoever did it.
>>
>>16298858
How would you put landing gear further forward? The truck's rear end would get in the way
>>

Makes adjusting the brakes easier.
>>
>>16298858
It was improperly loaded and/or improperly parked.
>>
>>16298876

You don't, it's not possible. If you need to load the front of the trailer when it's disconnected, you can put a support bar under the very front. You see this at some larger facilities that have a large number of their own trailers sitting at doors.
>>
>>16298858
Access to the wheels, obviously. That's how they change trailer tires, in some places. They have a bunch of lead weights on a cart, and forklift it into the back of a trailer. They roll it forwards until the trailer tips, and then change the tires while standing on a platform they wheel under it. Then they simply push the cart uphill to lower the back of the trailer again.

It doesn't matter. You're going to be stuck with your first employer for a minimum for a year anyway before you can get another job, so you might as well go with a company that will give you free schooling if you can.

>>
>>16298876
A lot of shorter trailers actually have that. Next time you see a pup trailer, look on the very front and there is a leg that slides down. If it isn't under a tractor, there isn't nearly as much of a lever-type action keeping it down since the axles are so much closer.

But that is impressive. They must have put a lot of weight in the front of that trailer to tip it like that.
>>
>>16299228
Does that to me too from time to time. It always goes away after I close the thread and come back to it. If anything, restart the browser.

Bought a 24" tv for my vulva today and an xbox one. after sitting so much this week and resetting on the road i feel it was justifiable. I just hope that it doesn't get shaken to shit while im driving(the tv). Might need to get some soft foam or something to pack behind it along the mount to keep it safer.

He backed into my bus and broke my mirror when we were out on a charter trip. Tried to get me to make up a BS story to the boss but I told the moron to fuck off.

I've got a random question or two. It occurred to me while I was working on some preliminary material for my taxes. A large portion of my business was in the neighboring state this year, so I had some unusual stuff to account for, but my vehicle is obviously registered in my home state, despite 'living' out of state for 7 months.

For long haul trucks, where are they typically registered? I'm assuming some state(s) have some special tax incentives, but I'm trying to figure out how you'd even decide where an OTR vehicle's "home territory" is if it's not on fixed routes. Even if it is on fixed routes, does a company being based in one state let them register the vehicle there, even if it never goes there?

Where your home terminal is, unless you're an o/o, then it's wherever you live
>>
>>16300707
What about people without a fixed address? I've known people in the past who basically lived out of a PO box because they were traveling for business 5-10 years straight.

Also raises the question of what kind of tax fraud happens with companies registering stuff out of state. Then again, I can't imagine the registration costs of the vehicles are all that high, so what do I know.
>>
>>16300707
Not always true.

>>16300695
Some companies will insure their trucks in a different province/state than where they are located for better rates. This also applies to owner-operator trucks if insured through the company. The first company I worked for was like this; we were based in BC, but registered and insured in Saskatchewan for the MUCH cheaper insurance. Seriously, it's almost 3 times the cost to insure a vehicle in BC than any other province because of the government-run monopoly.

If my car insurance goes above $1500/yr at the next renewal I'm getting a business licence in Alberta and registering my car to it. It's already $1100/yr for minimum 3rd party liability and comprehensive; and that's the absolute minimum it can go.
>>
>>16300790
Correction: Manitoba, not Saskatchewan. I always get that wrong for some reason.
>>
Hey truckerfags, does it annoy you when cars overtake you?

I know it shouldn't, but it'd annoy me.
>>
>>16300799
Nope. We're passed literally hundreds of times per day, even more in places with separate speed limits. The only thing that annoys me is when cars merge too close in front of me.
>>
>>16300790
I don't know about trucks, but I know that if I tried that and got into an accident my car insurance would drop me like a hot potato. It's already more expensive simply being nearby a no fault state. If they found that I was primarily working in it, my rates would go through the roof, or they'd just drop me, accident or not.
>>
>>16300799
The speed and maneuverability difference between four wheelers and trucks are so great that four wheelers are almost irrelevant to me. About the only time four wheelers bother me is when they're passing and run out of steam about halfway by and then just hang out by the drives for a couple of eternities.
>>
>>16300808
If they are moving at a reasonable pace above what you are doing, does it still bother you? If they are just creeping past you, yeah, I get it. No safety margins. Not that the truck would lose in a collision, but paperwork sucks.

However, if they are going to fly off into the distance anyways, I don't really see that it matters. As long as they don't brake check.
>>
>>16299861
They just get shook to fuck whwn mounted high. Another guy made a quick release mount for his and he stores it inbetween the matteress and foam topper he uses. That tv has lasted 5 years so far so it must work.
>>
>>16300987
Yes, but less so. There's always the possibility that they'll suddenly need to hit the brakes. When merging in front, always leave enough room, just in case.

Feel free to tailgate as much as you want though. If you hit, I probably won't feel it or take any damage, so I'll keep going and never know; while you have to go buy a new car.

>>
>>16300116
Doesn't matter

>>16300799
As long as they pass and continue going that speed it's all good. What's really annoying is when they pass at 75 on their cell phone, get back in front of you and do 55mph, and then you try to pass them again and they just ride with you.

Or the fuckers that sit right behind your trailer. And then you put on your turn signal and start switching lanes and as you are moving into the next lane, they decide they want to pass and pop out from behind the trailer and try to squeeze into that next lane while you are already merging into it. It seems ridiculous that somebody would do that but it happens all the time. Most of the time now I just keep going and they either have to back off, move over another lane, or slam on the accelerator as hard as possible to get in front of me before I completely force them out of the lane.
>>
>>16302310
Much as I feel like a dick for doing that to people, I do exactly the same thing. I also regularly deal with:
>Left blinker on, nearing slower moving vehicles ahead
>Traffic keeps passing me on the left, no one will give me a moment to pass
>Just drift slowly into the left lane until some asshat gets the message and lets me over
>>
>>16301467
Not at all. When stuck in traffic and bikes are filtering through, I'll try to open up more room for them. If anything, I'm jelly.
>>
>>16299234

Its possible the legs punched through the concrete too. That sudden shift will put trailers up like that too if the front end is even a little heavier then the rear.

Pick a mailbox, hopefully one in a state with truck friendly tax codes. Most operating and licensing fees are federal, and fuel tax is distributed by IFTA in all but a few backwards states. Trailer registration is a one time fee, so you get the plate and then don't worry about it unless the plate is stolen or destroyed.

Yeah, the company I interviewed with said their drivers are flat out supplying fuel for fracs and drilling rigs right now, so they run up to their 70, then take a reset at home as a day and a half off. I can live with that. Once breakup hits in spring, it's more relaxed, five and two work usually.

My buddy has been there for almost two years doing propane work, and doesn't have a bad thing to say about it. The money is quite good as well. Better than what I am making working twelve hour shifts doing well servicing with the way the oil and gas industry is right now.

One thing I'll never understand about driving a semi is why pete puts switches on the dash and not buttons on the steering wheel. How much weight does it take to do that? I know trailers are relatively light. Just some metal and plywood or whatever but it seems like you would need something pretty heavy to do that.

Who /california/ here
We driving at the very edge of the country now
>>
>>16310192
Real deal:
1)Prime has the best lease program.
2)There are no good lease programs.

If you lease you are considered self employed. You must provide your own health insurance. They may offer you a health plan but pay VERY careful attention to the fine print. It is most likely useless.
You are responsible for repairs to the truck. They WILL go over it with a fine tooth comb and charge you for new glass and a new hood due to minor wear, and that's just the beginning.
You will pay them FAR more than the value of the truck.
You will be forced to run slower than 60mph for fuel cost.
You will be treated exactly like a company driver but also have to pay for everything.
Most importantly, you are directly responsible for anything that happens. You will have to carry insurance, but the company will give you zero support in the event of an accident.
And your first couple years is where you make all of your mistakes...
>>
>>16310206
I have read that all over the net, but looking at some of the lease guy's paychecks it's in fact better than company. I'm confused now because the lease guys who upgrade don't complain as much as I'd expect them to if its really that bad...
>>
>>16305468

Their paychecks are higher because they are taking on more responsibility. There has to be some incentive.

But turn that around.
There has to be an incentive for the company to pay more to get people, ESPECIALLY newbies, to lease their trucks.
What could that be I wonder.

>>16307605
I can't stand those things. Not possible to feather the clutch. I'm betting there will be more and more busted loading docks and bend parts on the rear of trailers.

>>16307631
A lot.

Even small forklifts weigh as much as a car, so that it always possible. But something else must have happened to do that in a 53' trailer. Somebody else mentioned the landing gear coulda poked through the asphalt and sent it up. It's much more common for the short trailer to flip like that though. They have an extra leg on the very front of the trailer you can lower to prevent that.

>>16310206

>>16310261
It's like that for all of em? Trans Am dude made it sound like you just get extra money but Trans Am's fleet mechanics help you out and all that stuff. I would think you at least get the company to insure the load. With how you say it, there's no sense not to just go O/O unless you can't come up with the payment.

For the love of Gob, listen to the advice given to you on this board and don't lease a fucking truck.

Its a suckers bet, and the odds of succeeding in that venture are intentionally heavily stacked against you.

Even if you do make more money than as a company driver, the little bit of extra profit margins will go up in smoke the minute that truck needs mechanical work, or should you have even a minor wreck.

You want to actually succeed in this industry and minimize your chances of financial ruin, cut your teeth for two years as an otr company driver until the insurance costs to have you on as a driver are low, and you learn the ins and outs of the business, then pick a specialty so you make more money and diversify your experiences, making you more valuable.

Trucking companies aren't too keen to hire people who don't pay their bills.

I'm considering going to Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, WI to get my CDL. It costs $3000, should I get a loan even though I can afford to pay for it out of pocket? Also, should I even bother trying to into trucking before I'm 21? I'm only 19. I also have a speeding ticket from last year and a ticket for driving without a license, which was originally a ticket for having too many people in my car when I was 16, but I got it reduced to driving without a license which was an ordinance violation. Will any decent company consider hiring me with that driving record?
>>
>>16312349
A loan may slightly help your credit. New drivers are hard pressed to find a good job out of school due to insurance rates. If trucking is what you want to do, may as well start early as possible, longer you don't crash, more willing companies will hire you. Not many will hire under 21, some don't even do under 25. I had a speeding ticket and turning over a double yellow and still got hired. Infractions come off your record after 3 years so that one when you were 16 will go away soon if it hasn't already.

>>16313453

He sounds spectacularly retarded. Floating up is easy. Floating down is a bit more difficult. If your RPM is too low, you may not be able to get the gear lever to pop out without clutching. Also floating on less-than-ideal road conditions is a bad idea. At least clutch out to neutral.

>But muh clutch condition

Trying to get you to float gears to save on clutch wear and tear is like worrying about water damage from the fire fighter's hoses while your house is burning down around you.

All he's going to be doing is trading clutch wear for gear wear.

You really should spend some time double clutching and get comfortable doing it in a bunch of different conditions and scenarios before looking seriously at floating, that way you can quickly fall back to clutching if you have a float shift go badly, or are unable to float em due to spinning tires or torque load.

I usually float up and double clutch down, although it depends on how quickly I have to come to a stop or scrub off speed, and also how that particular truck handles. If I have lots of time, I will leisurely float downshifts.

I'd say just do it the way the trainer wants you to. His truck, his rules and all that. As long as they aren't patently dangerous of course. IME the quicker you make the trainer happy the quicker he kicks you out towards your own truck
>>
>>16314487
Nah I gotta do 30,000 miles to get my own truck no matter what. And there's lots of trainers to choose from. You go to coffee or lunch and decide if its a good fit. I'll meet a new trainer tomorrow.

I mean it's like 15min, but I like to just be able to go. With the bigger tanks (plus reefer) I could normally fill up Tues and then again Fri and the reefer is full for the weekend. If I'm able to shut the reefer off early some days, I can stretch it to Thurs and then just top it off at the end of the day Friday.

With this shit, I have to get fuel Mon or Tues depending on how much the reefer drank over the weekend, then again on Wed, then possibly Thursday and always have the reefer full on Fri afternoon. I mean honestly it's only once more per week but I like to get moving in the morning since I come in kinda late and have a cruise to get out to my route. If I don't have to get fuel in the morning, I can be at my first stop before 7 but if I have to waste that 20min, I'll get over there 7:15-7:30 and the 7-11 or wherever will be all crowded with people gettin coffee.

And I just like that the big fuel tank and reefer will last 3-4 days so they get low about the same time. But now the truck will have 1/4 of a tank and I have to stop when the reefer is 2/3 full.

>>16314262

I refused him and he went ape shit. Said he was just going to drop his load off and leave while he stormed out the door. I mean it seems like it should go hand in hand but I think a lot of diesel mechs just have regular DL's.

It makes sense because they need to test drive them. Plus sometimes our mechanics need to bring a new tractor or whatever out to a driver and bring the busted one back.

Which reminds me, my trailer was missing a lug nut on the passenger side wheel. I should probably tell fleet about that.
