Current project, 69 Chrysler Valiant VG Coupe, or better known to you American's as a Dodge Dart. Key differences are;
Right hand drive (means literally everything under the hood is offset)
Different nose-cone and rear bumper setup
Biggest engine size released in Aus was 360ci

Not far off getting her finished now, drive train is 90% installed (no exhaust / fuel system yet) but onto loom and interior as those last two items will be done at a shop.

my 400 came out of a junked 77 thunderbird.

if I were to do it all over again I would have just rebuilt the 390. But whatever, It's in the car now and I'm keeping it for as long as it'll live.
>>
>>16299645

I've still got it, and considering it's the original 390(and transmission, presumably) to the car, it's going to be stored in a special corner of the garage. when the time comes, I'll rebuild it and put it back in it's proper place.

the original line of thinking was "oh no, I'll have to have this crank machined, or buy another one, since I spun bearing on this"

1 year and $3,000 later I ended up ordering a new crank kit for the 400 anyway, but before that i was already ~$1k into parts anyway, so I figured I was already in too deep to abandon the 400. It certainly does haul ass with 9.5:1 compression, what with those custom pistons I ordered, though.
>>
>>16299593
If you have a spare water pump kicking around, look and see where that plugged hole (the one below the pressed-in hose barb) goes. If it goes to the 'out' side of the pump put the other heater hose there. That'll make for a cleaner-looking job.
Sorry I can't remember what goes to where. My small-block Ford knowledge is really rusty haha

Anon, what are you thinking? Engines don't run on zombie blood.

I wish we got the Hemi 6 in A-bodies over here. Instead we got the kinda doggy but stupidly robust Slant 6.
>>
>>16299378
>>16299585
You wouldn't want the heater core supply hose coming off the water neck or from the radiator since neither would have any heat until after the thermostat opened. IIRC that lower plug just below where the heater hose is being used as a plug on the water pump in the pic is a heater hose connection on the 400 and takes the heated water supply from the thermostat bypass port.
>>
>>16299816
Yup, but the actual block nipple itself sheared off from pure rust during rebuilding. I really don't want to go through the hassle of drilling out the old nipple and installing a new one, hence I was just going to get a T fitting to dump it straight into the radiator, i figured it'd work well enough to not freeze to death in the winter.

Original front fenders repaired, there were fist sized rust holes under bumper side brackets.

Don't want to replace with new fenders because aftermarket fenders for W123 are usually shitty and have fitting issues and they are almost in mint condition otherwise.

New paint and welding in new bolts for attaching to front fender (old ones were rusty and snapped) and these are good as new.

Hey /ccg/

I have approximately between 5-10,000 dollars I can acquire through a personal loan to buy a car. Looking at the options, there's a lot of classic cars that are "rebuilt right and ready to drive" in this price point that are a little rough cosmetically but appear to be a better value for a daily-driver than anything I could get new. I want something V8, RWD, driving dynamics be damned, big and brash with presence on the road. There's an 11,000 dollar 1968 Cutlass (pic related) with this in the description -

>t has a 455 Oldsmobile engine completely rebuilt ALL NEW, competition cam, very fast, automatic transmission, Krager rims and new tires, electronic firing ignition, brand new quad dual pumper holley carb with mechanical secondary, new x pipe exhaust, it is ready to drive and done right, the only need would be front bench seat does not match the rest of the interior

Notwithstanding the gas mileage, would buying one of these and putting it into daily driver service be a "smart" decision? My commute is not that long and I would invest in a Vintage Air setup when the cold months finish up.

I should add that I have a mechanic who I already use who restores classic cars, I have almost zero mechanical hands-on experience but some knowledge and a will to learn. I drive a 2003 Chevy Suburban and so it's not like I'll be losing much by DDing something that gets 13 MPG.
>>
>>16301914
You'd be wise to use a loan towards an appropriate commuter, and save your money for a classic bud. If you're not mechanically inclined, this is exceptionally true.

Here's the thing, classics (especially those semi-restored, modified etc) because you're dealing with 30-60+ year old parts, quality or cheap replacements, and any aftermarket or home-grown stuff the previous owners have done, so things can go wrong, routinely.
Also keep in mind, depending where you live, work, commute, etc, driving a classic can be sketchy, some are prone to theft, as well as Debbie in her crossover rearending you in traffic.

If your heart is set on a classic, and you're skilled, can do your research, can afford, and can do work, buy something not rusted out and work on it yourself, you'll appreciate it more in the long run too, there's nothing quite like driving the car/truck you know through and through.

This is all coming from someone who saved their money and simply kept their econobox on the road until they could buy what they wanted, and work on it from the ground up.
>>
>>16301936

>>16301937 Here

You're gonna pay through the nose, you're going to be up shit creek when little things fail on you, like tail lights blowing out, or the carb is acting up, heater core shits the bed dumping radiator fluid into the floor pan, rust, gauges going out, and any of this can be amplified by previous owners "work" and "repairs".

You absolutely, truly, never know what the car is like until you tear into it, so many hackjobs out there dude.

Save your money and wait, buy a toy down the road, don't make this a DD, you're going to regret it, seriously.
>>
>>16301937
Thanks for the kind advice. As with most things I've drawn out a few things that should solve the issues you described (hopefully).

>theft
I am a huge fan of the Ravelco anti-theft fob. I would have one installed immediately after I purchase the car (look it up!)

>shit going wrong
This one is the kicker. I drive a 159,000 mile Suburban with a slipping transmission, dents in the side and a limited checkbook. If I buy one of these cars with a rebuilt motor / transmission (hopefully in good condition), my thinking is that by putting it into daily service I would remove a lot of the issues that come with these cars being only seldomly used and sitting. I could go the smart route and buy a low mileage P71 Crown Vic that has basically all the qualities I'm looking for in a car without being 60 years old but that would be quite boring.

>>16301945
>so many hackjobs out there, dude
I have already experienced this. My dad went and bought a 1966 Pontiac Lemans sight-unseen, picked it up and had the engine throw a rod through the block on the interstate home (he tried to drive it 115 miles home after driving it around the block and declaring it highway ready!) The engine was fucked, the driveshaft was too long for the car, there was significant hidden rust and 10,000 dollars later in repairs from a 10,000 dollar purchase he takes the car in the divorce and hides it in South Florida. Talk about a fucking mess

>>
>>16301865
Agree, usually aftermarket replacement panels need fittiing & prepping as much as you'd consume time to fix the original panel. And they still don't fit.

Also original Mercedes panels are made from beefy stuff so welding them is easy even with my welding skills.

Another option of course is to buy new original Mercedes fender but i don't even want to know how much they cost nowadays.

I am in the UK, how difficult would it be for me to get parts for a 1970's classic american muscle car as well as the expense of it?

yup, mustang parts are all over the place, as well as classic chevy parts.

Meanwhile I can't even find a spare hood for my galaxie so i can finally run an air cleaner. and there's no way I'm hacking apart my only hood.

if reproduction parts availability are a deal breaker for you then I'd suggest looking up common things like body panels, trim pieces, etc before you go diving in to a new purchase. mechanical items are always available for all classics.

Flatheads have nothing but potential to make power. It just takes a lot more $ to do it which explains why you don't know how huge the aftermarket is for them now.

Flatheads do not have the ability to make power because you cannot get a good compression ratio and the head flow is pretty crap. A blown flat head type out at around 350 to 400

I replaced the heater core on my Imperial today; would not recommend. I priced out having the interior redone in black and gold; $2,500 to $3,000. That will be my tax refund splurge; next year, repainting; the year after that, disc brake conversion; then, engine rebuild.

Yeah road salt damage occurs over a long period of time. Basically you drive in a winter, get a bunch of salt trapped underneath and then is stays there for years because nobody cleans it.

There's a small amount. Only two small paint bubbles on the exterior, but a few spots underneath the footwell through to the carpets.

The only salt it has seen was only in parking lots and roads where it was leftover with no snow on the pavement, so it doesn't have any lodged under the wheel wells.

air gap in theory cools the intake charge by allowing there to be a space between the runners and the block, but I am not sure if it actually does anything. looks neat though. Also having a more direct downward path for the fuel mixture to go into the head will lead to more hp than the charge having to make a 90 degree turn from the runner.
>>
>>16305596
To elaborate on what he said; according to a mechanic who forgot more about building performance engines than I'll ever know, they only work on cars where you have a direct line of air from outside the engine bay or an exposed intake; even then, it's nominal at best.

Myself and most other RWD pickups around town have been filling our beds with snow for extra rear end traction. My relatively new M+S rated all-terrains have been pretty close to useless against the barrage of snow we got last weekend, 1.5 - 2 ft over the weekend. Most important roads have been plowed today but yesterday was a total gong show. The Fraser Valley isn't used to winters like this so we're never prepared, shit hits the fan whenever we see real snowfall.

its lighter weight for racing. Remember: metal with a load on it doesn't rust, only lazy metal that isn't doing anything. Rust might look ugly but its only taking the metal that isn't being used for anything away, leaving all the necessary bits intact. See how that driveshaft is on;y a little rusted on the surface? That's because it experiences the load from the engine and wheels a lot, while the other bits there that haven't had enough weight loading on them due to overengineering have crumbled away.

If you don't want your truck or car to rust, load it up in the back. Real pros take their trucks and fill them with salt, so that it is super easy to salt the driveway or salt a slippery section of road if stuck, keeps traction up, a real win-win-win.

I would get off of Craigslist and instead take a drive. Stay off the main freeways and get onto the old state highways. The ones that go through the little towns, the farmlands, the hood parts of town.

Soon you'll start seeing cars. Then start asking around. My project was sitting behind a church when I went there to donate supplies from charity. The owner was literally a 75yo nun. We get to talk and she likes the fact that I'm dreaming of it as a father/ son project car. $1000. Floorpan was swiss cheese, the upholstery and top were toast but the drive train purrs with not too much $ into it and the frame/body is pretty solid.

Plus it makes for a better story

True that my dude

Half of owning a classic car is the story behind it.

For example, when I bought my Imperial I flew out to Arizona and, despite breaking a personal rule and buying it from a Mexican, I proceeded to drive it to Texas. Along the way, it shorted out in the ignition wiring and I had to start it with an alligator clip and a wrench. That fix worked for thr rest of the trip; roughly 800 miles, as I drove it along Route 66.
>>
>>16318141
That's pretty kek worthy. Now that the dust has settled, how do you feel about no longer having the 59 cad?
>>
>>16318219
I miss looking at the Cadillac, but that's it. The Imperial drives a LOT better; the X-frame on the Cadillac is garbage for handling, and the Imperial has a better view from behind the wheel.

I'd probably have liked the '59 Cadillac better if I hadn't driven a '59 Chevrolet. They're the same car.

The Excalibur is also a great car; the build quality is what you would expect from a car that cost $27,000.00 in 1978. The Corvette components make it handle well and parts are cheap and readily available. It also looks a lot better in person than pictures give it credit for.

That said, the '59 Cadillac is still the best LOOKING car I've ever owned. If only the driving experience weren't so bland.
>>
>>16318261
Yeah I feel that. I'm still blown away when I research imperials how unbelievably well engineered they were. Everything was meticulously thought out. Why don't you think they sold that well?

I think that they were too understated.

Though, the world of luxury car buyers is fascinating. To this day, people will still lie, cheat, steal, or agree to unreasonable financing to own a Cadillac. In the '60s, it was the ultimate status symbol.

People who buy Lincolns look down on Cadillac owners for buying the car of the "nouveau riche" and use the justification of "American Luxury" to mask the fact that they can't afford a Rolls Royce or a Mercedes 600.

I'm going to post one of my favorite articles that reviewed the top luxury cars in the world in 1965; it's fascinating and nearly every complaint about the Imperial was addressed for 1966.

They're stupidly expensive to repair, too.

I can't speak for the ride quality of the Mercedes, but I've owned a comparable car to the Cadillac, Rolls Royce, and Imperial; I've also driven a similar Lincoln

I've also never been in a similar Jaguar.

My personal opinion is different and, as collector's vehicles, I'd recommend each of them to a different type of person.

What type of person gets what car?
>>
>>16318725
Autists get the Imperial
>>
>>16318725

>Lincoln Continental
New to classic cars. It has pretty good parts availability; the only expensive things are the Lincoln-specific bits. Ford used the rest of the components for decades. If the body is solid and the car is complete, they are good for rolling restorations and daily drivers.

>Cadillac Fleetwood
Someone who doesn't mind a 4-door or with a little grease under their nails, but a limited budget. The trim bits are expensive, as is anything Cadillac-specific; which includes the engines, but they tend to be well cared-for. 4-doors can be had, in excellent condition, for almost nothing (by comparison to the others) and they tend to have all the bells and whistles; most of which hold up pretty well. The down side is that you'll be waiting on almost every part to arrive; so preemptive maintenance is a must, if you don't have a spare carburetor.

>Imperial
Mopar guy, experienced classic owner, classic car autiste. Parts are expensive, have to be ordered, spare interior parts and nonexistent due to low production numbers, most parts (aside from the drivetrain) are unique to the series, but Chrysler was God-tier in the '60s.

>Rolls Royce
That guy who pays someone else to restore his cars. The brakes are insanely expensive and overly complex for average performance. Parts costs easily exceed the cost of other cars; the fuel pump on the '67 Silver Shadow I used to own was $1,900.00. You're paying for the name and an iconic style.

>Mercedes
Jay Leno. Cue the Vivaldi, because you have to be a rich autiste. They're magnificent cars; I would not hesitate to drive one exclusively if expenses were covered; like in those proposed threads that come up from time to time, but they will bleed you dry on the stupidest of shit. $12,000.00 for the hydraulic window switch; literally everything you need to know about the car.

>Jaguar
No experience; would defer to an expert.
>>
I'm also happy to advise people on any classic and line up candidates from your local Craigslist.

I'll either be buying another classic in February or starting phase 1 of restoring my Imperial.
>>
>>16319036

>>
>>16319091
How about you restore your Imperial before you spend your money on another barge
>>
>>16319036
>Jaguar owner
>no experience

Nah man, every jag owner I've ever met, including myself, does all the wrenching. People are scared of jags, and why wouldn't you be? The series 3 XJ6 has the alternator on the BOTTOM of the engine bay, with no splash guard besides the cross member. This was a car designed for flooded British streets. It's even worse because the water pump is easily accessible on the top if the engine.

However, no one realizes how rugged Jag's engines are, especially the sixes. Those things take a fucking beating. And you're getting a car that looks better than anything else on the market, including Rolls and Bentley, and especially Mercedes.
>>
>>16319099
Depends upon the year. My '66 has a 440 and 727; chosen for that reason. Parts for those are unlimited. Body panels; buy a parts car. The pillar cover between the doors? I haven't found one in 6 months.

>>16319118
If I buy another daily driver, I can tear down the Imperial and do everything in one go, vs section by section.

>>16319145
The only Jaguar I've owned was an XJS with a 350 swap; everything but the electrical system was awesome.
>>
>>16319234

The only way I'll be able to fully restore it is if I get a second car; while I love my Excalibur, it's terribly suited for use as a daily driver. I'm still fabricating parts for the DeLorean, and I'm not going to get my Fiero until the snow is gone in Wisconsin; plus, buying a $2,000.00 Lincoln or pickup truck is cheaper than bringing the Fiero down here.

If I get another daily driver, I can afford to pull the engine from the Imperial, repaint the engine bay, mildly build the 440, and redo most of the wiring. Right now, I'm limited by my need to use the car to get me to work and for its roof when it rains.

sure, on a top end land speed racer car.

on a drag car you want acceleration, and more gears means quicker ratios that will get you to that final drive faster.

>>

They are used in a variety of motorsports besides drag racing. One day you'll understand why having two gear ratios is a benefit to nopower shitboxes.

what so that you can get converter slip for the first 1000rpm to simulate a first gear? no, you're full of shit. Most people with serious power are going to Lencos anyhow.

All you are saying is
>you don't know thing
>you so don't know thing
>god I know thing so well

have a (You). Powerglide a shit, 3 speeds > 2 speeds.

But you assume these gear ratios are direct drive, But it's not. There's torque multiplication coming into play here.

and if three speeds are better than two, then why do top fuel dragsters use one single 'gear'?
>>
>>16322283
because they have 8000hp and a clutch pack literally could not stand up to that. Also there wouldn't be time to shift

Street rods have all switched over for a reason, you can go faster when you are in the power band longer, and you have more chances to be in the power band with more gears. A top fuel dragster is almost always in the power band.

If more speeds is always better why did Pontiac, Olds and Caddy all go from 4 speeds to 3 speed autos?

>what so that you can get converter slip for the first 1000rpm to simulate a first gear?
Actually first gear is short enough to power the car with lockup, then it slips through second, this slip essentially gives it whatever gear ratio it needs. One of the reasons PG is beloved.
>Most people with serious power are going to Lencos anyhow.
Lencos are expensive, they require manual input, they are heavy as shit. PG>lenco outside of top fuel.

>All you are saying is

Because it's the god damned truth. If you don't know, ask, but you don't you assume, do a quick google search, and make more assumptions.
for example:

>Powerglide a shit, 3 speeds > 2 speeds.
Well who would have thunk that they made 3 speed Powerglides.
Certainly not KKK because he knows shit.
They're called Turboglides you complete mong.
>>
>>16322292
The Turboglide in reality is more similar to the Dynaflow than Powerglide
>>
>>16322289
>street rod
>1/4 mile
>"""""""power band"""""""

we're not talking about a peaky rice burner. We're talking about a V8 going down a 1/4 mile strip. That v8 is going to have a broad torque curve. The low ratios in the powerglide don't matter because you can just go with numerically higher rear gears.

But I don't really care, I'm just arguing for the fuck of it because this is the internet.

http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/transmission/ghtp-1108-powerglide-transmission-build/

>The most extreme example is in NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car. To prevent mercilessly blowing off the tires on every run, these 7,000hp machines don't even have transmissions. Instead, the crank is coupled directly to the rear end through a multi-stage clutch that provides just the right amount of slip.

now I suppose you're going to argue that a clutch pack is somehow inferior to a regular clutch.

the power glide hasent let me down and its a beat in a 1/4 mile so I can't really complain that truck has always been good for me except for the mpg
