I've owned several '50s cars; a '51 Chevy with a Powerglide and a '59 Cadillac. The Powerglide is nowhere near as smooth, but it is a LOT of fun when you get some power in front of it; shifting feels like it got its ass kicked and the whine is music to my ears, but I'd never daily drive one again.

Second is the 1970 'Cuda 440

This is the play around car. All get driven, but the other two are stock and more collectible. This one isnt, as it started life as a 318 Gran Coupe and was swapped to a 440 (along with a 9 3/4s rear) so it sees more use and general tinkering.

When I stripped the paint for some metal work, I found out it was originally white, then painted hemi orange, before it came to the final black color.

1968 Barracuda 340 Formula S

The Formula S was when the Barracudas were starting to get hot before the launch of the 'Cuda in 1970. This Formula S has a 340, but I believe you could have a 383 in '69.

change your hoses while you're at it, and keep good antifreeze in the system.

I won't rip on you for using it, but you do have to be slightly more careful with it.
No mixing any other color/brand of antifreeze with it
Change it every year (which you should be doing anyway)
Use distilled water to mix with the antifreeze.
>>
>>16326378

74 added a bunch of emissions crap, and it also started common use of electronic ignition (non-points). After that the vacuum diagrams get more complicated.

I would go 72-75 at best. Later than that up to the 80s and fuel injection adds a shitload of queer vacuum sensors and actuators.

Adjust rear brakes.
I forget if you have front drums too, but adjust if need be
>>
>>16339509
How do you adjust brakes
>>
>>16339514
Run up the star wheel through the backing plate, then back it off a little.
>>
>>16339519
Which way do you spin it?
>>
>>16339514
the best way is to jack up the wheels, get 2 flat head screwdrivers, adjust the star adjust out until you can't turn the wheel anymore, then use the second screwdriver to push back the little lock tab and adjust the brakes back in until there is a little bit of rub from the shoes.
>>16339522
The adjuster only spins one way, until you use a second screwdriver to push the locking tab back

Nah, that's too loose ime. When they're right it's pretty hard to turn the wheel by hand. It sounds like it's way too tight but to a vehicle it's nothing at all.

Now if the drums aren't round you'll be hating life due to the pulsing. A looser adjustment calms that quite a bit.

nigger what? I'm a trained 1st year auto tech and work at an auto shop.
No school or shop or mechanic would ever have been trained or showed to do it that way
>>
>>16339714
And I'm a former auto tech that had 10+ years in back when drum brakes were still a thing and I know that a light rubbing sound that turns easily by hand is too loose. Learned that the hard way because I started out doing it like you say and always ended up with a low pedal and also the subsequent complaints. Eventually an old brake guy told me what I was doing wrong and I went for the tighter adjustment and no more complaints.

And as you know as a tech, you definitely don't want customers coming back for simple shit. Particularly on your day off. Or if your recheck get assigned to someone else for some reason.

I can work on drums, but fuck that. The only metric they are better at maybe is initial stopping, but that wears down after a bit.

I've taken the I beams off another truck, it wasn't that hard. I've just got to get the remaining parts.
>>
>>16340640
>The only metric they are better at maybe is initial stopping, but that wears down after a bit.
They can apply more braking force then a disk. This is indisputable.
>>
>>16340640
Put something on and making it work is a lot harder than taking something
>>
>>16340649
But they don't dissipate heat nearly as well so repeated stops drastically reduced breaking ability. Also drums are worse for minute pressure differences.

>>16340667
It's a pretty well documented swap, especially considering that the frames and mounting and all parts are a direct swap. I've got faith, only hard part will really be lifting those heavy I beams up
>>
>>16340649
>>16340833
Would you two stop your fighting please?
There is nothing wrong with drum brakes
There is nothing wrong with disc brakes.

Both have been used for over a hundred years.
Drums have the advantage of more friction area at the cost of simplicity.
Discs have the advantage of more heat dissipation and simplicity at the cost of less friction area.

Discs are good for racing
Drums are good for average low speed driving
Both work very well for average driving.

Had a little mishap with my Imperial the other day; a woman on her phone didn't see me making a turn and tried to go when I had started. Her car was totaled; transmission destroyed, front end mangled, and hood bent.

My Imperial has a small dent in the trim on the front fender; looks like a rock hit it, a groove in the paint by some that were already there, and a broken lens over the driver's side head lights.

I wanted to do a stroker kit, But I don't think it'd work out too well with the rev range I'm planning on for it, what with the 3,000 rpm bottom end from the planned tunnel ram.
>>

yeah that's the thing about them, that stock 1.72 ratio is killer for high rpm power.

probably the d3ve heads that came with it, They can be made to flow halfway decent. I priced out a pair of aftermarket heads at $1300. That's a little beyond my shoestring budget tho.
>>

I might. I have plenty of room for it. Need to replace the trunk pan first though.
>>
>>16343911
if you could find a set of c8ve or c9ve or d0ve you would be able to make some power, those have a decent stock flow and a smaller chamber size

that's how I feel though, if I am going to be doing a GT40 build it isn't worth the 1200 for a set of aluminum heads when the GT40p's flow alright.

You can be a hardass on a Vietnamese rice paddy bazaar. But there's a reason you that most performance builds for ferd right now are based off the 385. It breaths, it revs and you can cram it full of stroke if you want
>>
>>16345008
The real reason most people build 385s is they're cheaper. The blocks are cheaper and the parts are cheaper than an FE. You can pick a complete 460 for like 400 bucks. The one 400+ cube FE I saw on my craigslist was a 406 and it was 1800 for just the block and heads

>>
>>16348443
The holley is done for so i got a 2 barrel to throw on there, right now i have to find a way to get this throttle shaft to work with the kickdown.
The holley has the right connection but the one on this 2 barrel is pressed in so i can maybe run it without a kickdown until i find a proper replacement, or a 360.
>>
>>16348451
Yeah, you can run without a kickdown, just don't expect to do any passing on 2-lane roads lol.

What do you have now, a Carter? Is there any sort of a cable conversion available?
Or, hell, what are you missing anyhow?

Yeah i have a remanufactured carter BBD, meant for a jeep so that's the problem. I just need the car to be able to move around the yard and run without starting fluid assistance.
I'll probably upgrade to a cable system eventually, still out of a job but the government approved me for some autismbux (unemployment)

I don't really have a suitable picture besides this, this "rod" is missing from my carb, you can see how it's supposed to hold the kickdown lever.

The holley has it so i was going to try and take it off the holley and put it on the Carter
>>
>>16348480
Aah. I see, I see.

If there's a hole in the proper place, you might try a 1/4" (or 5/16" i can't really tell) bolt of appropriate length, with a nut on each side of the plate with loctite on the threads.

it has a pressed in nub where that rod should go.
i may end up drilling it out, i don't know yet.
It won't hurt anything to run without the kickdown for now though.
>>
>>16348492
Do you know if it's possibly to have a vacuum kickdown? I think that's what my truck has because it's not an original automatic transmission and I can't find a kick down lever but there's a vac line going to the transmission.
>>
>>16348508
Probably not, the 4.0 this carb was meant for bolts to an A904 which is the same transmission, i thought so too because it has 20,000 vacuum ports on the carb but those jeeps all had mechanical kickdowns. It could be this carb was meant for a manual transmission.

Nice. I think at some point down the road I'd consider putting an aux tank in on the other side of the bed opposite my toolbox. It couldn't be that hard, plenty of 70s fords had them as dual tanks.

You might want to crawl under there and have a look. Or post a pic of your engine bay from the driver's side.
I know Ford used a vacuum modulator to control how hard and when it shifts based on manifold vacuum but they used a kickdown lever afaik.
>>
>>16348632
Yeah I looked under, and there's the shifter linkage but as for a line from the throttle linkage to the transmission I can't find one. I'm pretty sure it just doesn't have one, and relies solely on hydraulic pressure, or maybe it's vacuum.

if you have no idea where it went then most likely a previous owner did the kickdown delete.

The kickdown on a c6 is on the same shaft as the shift linkage(driver side), The vacuum modulator is on the passenger side. Look close at that pic, you'll see a shaft that protrudes outside of the shift lever, that's where the kickdown should have went(I deleted it).

You don't have to run a kickdown, and they only really kick down below 45mph I think anyway, and that's only at WOT. You do however need to keep the vacuum modulator unless you run a full manual valve body. This controls the shift timing and shift hardness just like what >>16348632 said.
