Soup /dbt/

I semi-recently got an 03 CBR600 and I've noticed that once it has warmed up, it will vary its rpms when I am holding the throttle steady. Not a crazy amount, but they will rise and fall cyclically and I can feel it.

Under hard acceleration it sounds like the engine is climbing steps if that makes any sense. RPM rises with throttle input, tries to do the cyclical drop, but instead holds steady instead of a smooth rise in rpm overall.

I hope I'm explaining this in a way that makes sense.

Any advice? Ruled out clogged air filter. No rust in tank, but have not ruled out an issue with the fuel filter.
>>

Now, I would never fucking spend $3.5k on a 320cc bike but I can understand the appeal of it.

The map will be fine, it's a map. That won't have changed.

It'll be something like an airbox sensor or a throttle position sensor or blocked injectors if it's "surging" because the bike is thinking it's getting different amounts of air or fuel to what it is.

I've been trying to decide on getting clear or subtle carbon looking ones. Of course someone always has something bad to say online about everything, and after reading alot of forum posts apparently clear ones can end up looking worse than black when they get a little worn and old. I'll keep it pad free for the first month then bite the bullet when it doesn't feel so new. Good to hear clear worked for you.

had a question about my scooter, recently dumped a ton of cash into it and it doesnt run very well

starts and idles fine, seems to have power in the low end but after it hits peak rpm (13000 or so) it loses all power and dies, will not restart

it acts like its flooding, but runs very hot
ive tried every jet under the sun, maybe i need a bigger carb to handle high rpm?
>>
>>16298303
No insurance, no garage, unfortunately. Baiku is >>16298069

If they actually pick the bike up to put it in a van that shit should make a lot of noise, if nothing else. I'm only interested in knowing if the quality of that shit is good and if I have any alternatives.

What do you recommend to avoid that? Can't insure it against theft with my current company. Any useful device?
>>
>>16298314
I'm around 6ft and 90% of what I see is my shoulders. It is better than a cbr I tested which may as well of had no mirrors at all. If I tuck my elbow it's a little better but my last bike I out bar end mirrors on and had a clear view at all times. Cosmetically I think bar ends look cheap which is a Shame, but I don't want to pull away from a traffic light hauling ass oblivious to a cop behind me.
>>
>>16298327
Similar problem with my dad's scooter, though it doesn't seem to be impacted by rpm.
Starts and runs fine for about 1/8th - 1/4 of a mile, then it dies.
He's tried everything, he says. Installed a fuel filter, cleaned the carbs about a million times, had to use a single strand of copper from a braided speaker wire to get into the jet and still it persists.
>>
>>16298349
Get theft insurance. Get a garage. Even though I have both I still have my steering locked, and put a heavy chain through my wheel.

We have had 5 cars windows smashed and everything inside taken on a busy street where I live and no one heard a thing. Don't let noise be a deterrent. Half the time I hear car alarms going off I don't even react unless it doesn't go off for 30seconds since they go off for no reason.

Don't let that make you paranoid though, majority of bikes will never get stolen.

Oh bolzanon
I have exactly the same thing, if you put it on the front wheel it can be a pretty good deterrent, the motion activated ones scream even if you roll the wheels

Battery lasted 2 years, now it's iffy

Use it as a noise alarm, a bar and a good kick can break it, but it'll alert you

Plus relax, it's an SV
>>
>>16298374
I don't have a garage, I live with my father. And I just got the insurance, the company won't insure any bike older than 10 years or some shit for theft.

Leather is superior because the strands of hide that make it are literally running in a million different directions, unlike a woven fabric which is usually two. There is nothing more abrasion resistant than leather.

What color is your spark plug insulator? Learn to read plugs. Running hot is not caused by flooding. Lean mixture can certainly cause hot running.

"Ton of cash" means nothing. Always post DETAILS. Also YEAR, MAKE and MODEL because not every engine is the same.

Losing power and shutting down sounds like fuel starvation. Make sure the fuel system is clean and the carb is getting fuel and working properly. Carbs are easy to clean but cleaning does fuck all if your tank hasn't been emptied and checked for cleanliness.

One more thing. If you have a vacuum fuel valve, shitcan it or mod it so your fuel shutoff is manual only. Then learn not to leave it open when parked. Failed vacuum petcocks can cause fuel starvation. I remove them from any motorcycle I own.

Obtain and study a factory (not aftermarket) service manual for your motorcycle. Go to Ducati forums and read, read then read more. If you are too lazy to read that's fine too. You will get the outcome your conduct deserves.

>oil light is on
>I actually start the engine it turns off

The oil light coming on when power is applied serves a "self test" function. With power applied via the ignition switch and no oil pressure to unground the ground side of the circuit, electricity flows through the oil light which illuminates. You thus know your oil light circuit works properly. When oil pressure is sufficient, the oil pressure sensor will open the circuit ungrounding the bulb and the light will go out.

If lack of oil (common among DRZ owners) pump failure, or mechanical damage reduce oil pressure at the pressure switch, it will close and the oil light illuminates.

Depends on location. I practically batter dip vehicles in red Loctite but have no problems.
Corrosion OTOH sticks babby carb screws severely and often.

Two classic tricks for JIS/Phillips/Reed and Prince screw removal:
Using a good, sharp new screwdriver bit, drive the bit firmly into the screw with a few strikes of a small or medium hammer, then twist to remove.

Better method, use a hand impact tool with a good sharp bit so you can apply rotational force while striking the impact tool.

Babby Vise-Grips with good jaws work well if you have access.

Then replace shitty screw with a nice stainless socket head bought in bulk for dirt cheap via Ebay. Ebay is a great source for stainless metric and US hardware.

Welp looks like I took on another summer project.

What's the going rate for a fork rebuild? Racetech wants $135/fork. I'm tempted to just ship it to them to make sure it actually has the emulators and springs.

Rate depends on parts, but forks are easy to do.

I wouldn't pay 135/side or even both for labor alone since it's easy to DIY in an afternoon. There isn't much involved in disassembly and installing new seals. I wouldn't send them off because the delay would annoy me, but it's your money.

>Welp looks like I took on another summer project.

All minor stuff tho. A leisurely weekend of fiddling at most.

If your fork springs are too strong to compress by hand you can buy a tool for the job for less than you'd pay someone else to do the work, and keep the tool.

As you do it, you'll get familiar with the bike and may spot even more stuff that needs fixing. It's time well spent.

I'll be in it a couple hundred at most and still come ahead, most expensive part being the fork rebuilds. I can deal with the fuel/oil leaks and I'll change the bearings myself (steering stem and might just do new front axle bearings for the hell of it)

Still sucks I just want to whine about it. I like to say I paid for the parts on it (Penske shock and new chain/sprockets)

>>16299321
Yeah I was only thinking of letting them do the forks just to make sure that they're actual racetech emulators and springs for a 180lb rider how he claimed when I bought it. I've never done forks either. The delay doesn't bother me since it's already in the 30s and I have a second bike. I'd like to think I'm paying for their expertise.

Never seen one irl. A lot of rulebooks have clauses that you can't change OEM displacement for Superstock classes, and my rulebook allows Superstock, Superbike, or Formula rules for different bikes to balance the field. You'd have to run a 4cyl past the rules committee if you wanted to make a 450 triple.

why are r6s so expensive where i'm at?

even the 10 year old shit ones want 4k+

Was thinking of talking down this guy:https://modesto.craigslist.org/mcy/5822644124.html

to a reasonable price and then getting: https://modesto.craigslist.org/mpo/5908866209.html

so it doesnt look like ass.

ive had my ninja 250 for like 3 years. I still love it but damn i want some highway presence
>>

>>
>>16300514
ill never ride a gsxr

i feel really neutral on the xz6r and cbr600, the r6 stands out to me. Far and away my preference above the rest.

honestly even if i found a good deal on one i'd probably not be as happy as i would be if i overpay on an r6

Only when you take really good care of it, i had one it's an amazing bike but very high maintenance.

Why does anyone ever think motorcycles are cheap?
They aren't get over it.
Even buying a cheap used one is still expensive because it probably needs thousands spent on it in maintenance that has not been done by the old owner.

let's say the motorcycle is running. the engine hasn't been thrashed with low/no oil or raced. it's not a "high strung" competition machine. it's just a regular bike.

valve check: free
carb/tb clean, sync, etc: free
new battery: $80
odd rubber bits: $20
valve adjusment: $10 if shims, free if not
steering head bearing: $30
wheel bearings: $60
new tires: might be optional depending on how hard you ride
chain: $50-80
sprockets: $50-80
bottle of oil: $10-50
fork oil: $10
lube everything: $2 tube o' grease

most of these are overestimates and you can buy cheaper
you can also buy more expensive but don't really need that ultralight racing gold chain and alloy sprocket set
>thousands

>>
>>16300765
Yes i am sure you lack of engine maintenacne, cheap parts when it has been done and shitty oil over the course of however long you own it will not damage it at all.

Even a well maintained bike still needs thousands spent on it in maintenance eventually, you are just making the job even more expensive by cheaping out early on.

>>
>>16300770
There's nothing wrong with slightly less than top tier oil if you are not racing and keep to an actual oil change schedule instead of doing it when you feel ike it.

>total lack of engine maintenance
There are things I didn't mention, like air filters ($13 fucking buckaroos), plugs ($3 a plug), coolant (so cheap i don't keep track), oil filter (included in the cost of oil). There isn't a lot on the factory maintenance schedule because I don't ride a 2 stroke. Anything that isn't on it is a "inspect or replace when functionality is reduced" item. Speaking of, compression tests are free, if your clutch needs work you'll fucking know it, and the sound of a primary chain or cam chain slapping around is audible on day one.
>>
>>16300770
no. You don't have to buy the products with a retarded markup to keep a vehicle well maintained. It is totally fine to buy a sprocket for 1/3 the price if it will last 2/3 as long as the top tier ones. I still buy good filters and fluids and shit. Nothing mentioned there would cause any catastrophic failure or higher costs in the future or even damage any other parts on the bike.
>>
tires are the most expensive part of motorcycle maintenance

>unless you ride a wr250
>enjoy those $500 top ends
>>
>>16300774
you mean

>tfw bearings and friends wear out somewhat sooner so the total cost over a lifetime is marginally higher than it would be if you bought premium parts
smaller line items > bigger total savings anyways

if you save more in a week, that's more you can invest then and there. if you have less in a week but more in a lifetime, well, you missed the boat.
>>
>>16300770
