Why do I get in more trouble with the law in Illinois if I have a CDL than not?

My dad got pulled over for 10 over the limit, had to spent like $340 on a lawyer to drop the charger, or he would have gotten his license suspended.
Something they not telling me, or is this how it is?
>>
>>16252685
No, if you aren't driving a commercial vehicle then you will still get the same tickets as you would without a CDL. But it could get you shitcanned from your job and won't look good when you are applying places.
>>
>>16252698
Sorry, forgot to add. My dad has a CDL, but has not used in 10 years. He got pulled over in a normal car for the first time in a long, long time, and got a very heavy fine because he is a CDL owner?
He dropped his CDL right after.

I dont get it.
>>
>>16252710
Idk, maybe there is some bullshit in IL. That would suck. I know all the fines are different for commercial vehicles compared to cars, like your $100 ticket for doing 65 in a 55 in the car will be lighter than the same charge in a semi truck but you shouldn't get the fat charge even holding a CDL if you are driving a car.
>>
>>16252685
because Illinois is a fucked state. why anyone would live in Illinois over any of the states right next to it is beyond me.
>>
>>16252734
Well most of the states around IL are pretty shitty too. WI isn't too bad or maybe KY but Indiana is a shithole and Iowa is too. Most of the Midwest is awful.

That's why I left and have no desire to go back.
>>
>>16252673
Honestly, I love getting cucked. I will go out of my way to make sure it happens, at home, at work, you name it. NTR IS WHERE I SET THE BAR

Still hoping for answers, if anyone knows. Wish I would have tried the mystery ones before I quit, but was too tired on the last day to remember.

Short story with happy ending:
>Some fucknut crashed on the I-5N just south of Tacoma, WA
>Whole freeway was shutdown for 3 hours.
>Averaged 1km/h during that time.
>Crash cleared, scales closed because late
Fortunately customs took pity on me and pushed me through in 30 seconds.
>Opened trailer doors in parking area before border
>Pull up, shut down, hand passport over
>CBSA guy looks back at open trailer doors
>Empty?
>"Yep"
>Buy anything?
>"Nope"
>Have a good night.
>pull forward, close doors
>120km/h all the way back to the yard
>Arrive at midnight
>Started at 5:30 that morning
>>
>>16253060
I passed that northbound about 9am. Shit looked gnarly.
>show up at safeway in auburn
>bunch of people checking in late due to snoqualmie getting shutdown last night
>guy whinging and moaning about how much time he's lost, and how he needs to get somewhere south of portland by the afternoon or his weekend is fucked
>tell him about the wreck
>show him google traffic
>he just hangs his head and starts mumbling curses for the next 10 minutes.
>>
>>16253060

Think of it as 3 transmissions in one:
A normal 5 speed (lever)
A low-high box (front flappy toggle)
A direct-overdrive box (red thumb toggle)

The 5 speed transmission is like an old wide-ratio Borg Warner or Muncie transmission, with their extra-low first gear.

The low-high box acts as a transfer case in a 4 wheel drive pickup would, except instead of engaging a front axle, it just does reduction and direct. Now you have a transmission with 9 usable forward gears (L in high range would be somewhere between 3 and 4 in low range) plus a reverse.

Now add in the direct-overdrive box. It does what you might think it does, and adds another 2-speed box to the 9-speed transmission. 4 more usable forward gears, turning it into a 13 speed box, with reverse.

Now, take this with a grain of salt because I've never really had much to do with Roadrangers. The last big thing I drove was a clapped out IHC Westcoaster with a twin stick 5+3.

How2 get rid of shitty Pepsi restrictions on iPhone?

4chan isn't blocked at least
>>
>>16253511
They give us an iPhone and tell us it's $600 if we break it or lose it. No app store, no texting (although I can receive texts and read them in the window on the lock screen), can't even do the fingerprint lock, can't download GPS to find stops. Wtf?

I would rather just have the $50 Nokia brick with the battery that lasts a month.

Oh, and they claim the iPhone will eventually replace our handheld computers. They say probably Q3 by next year which really means spring of 2019.
>>
>>16253270
I better be able to contest it, I bet the lazy asses at my home terminal didn't even bother to read the entire report. It clearly has N/N marked for Violation/Citation.

>>16253511
If they let you take it home you can try and jailbreak it. It will remove all the Pepsi apps though, they had the same shit when I worked at Lowes.

Everybody on board with autonomous trucking?
>>
>>16253869
That's what I think I will do. Because the sales program and shit isn't even on there, we still use the handheld computer for everything else.

But when they eventually switch to the iPhone as our handheld, I need to come up with an excuse for them to reinstall everything. Or maybe I could save a backup of the Pepsi format on my computer before trying to wipe it to factory new stats.

Low gear stick position with the high range selector up is basically fourth gear, but in the high range, making a shift into fifth easier depending on what you're dealing with for load, traffic etc. That same setup with the splitter forward is like 4.5th gear.

I told the big boss I was gonna just leave the thing in my car and he was offended. And using the maps on Safari is an option but not as easy. It would be nice if I could download apps tho and that way I could burn through 20GB of Pepsi data streaming music and porn.

>>
>>16255129
Wait... Why the fuck did they even give you a phone? Don't you have your own, or do you just use two now?

I'm with the other dude. If they're going to charge you $600, either give it back or lock it up somewhere safe. The thing doesn't even work for important shit. Use your own phone.
>>
>>16255319
>tandems being too far back for California
They actually care? I had them back lots of times - once only 3 ft from all the way back - and never had a problem. Frequently drove all the way from Bakersfield to Vancouver like that. All of those times I was above 33,000 on the trailer though. Potatoes so heavy.
>>
>>16255537
I mean technically we should be provided phones because we work on the road and need to call customers and bosses a bunch. They used to have these shitty flip phones and charged like $150 if you lost those. I was asking for one awhile back so I didn't have to keep breaking my iPhone but 3 years later and they never got around to it.

I mean once they get the software on the iPhones to replace the handheld computers it will be straight but that is going to be at least a year so right now we have an overpriced and fragile brick phone.

Salesmen and management all have iPad Minis and they have had iPhones for awhile. But management actually gets iPhones that have an app store and shit. I guess the one good thing I can use the work phone for is calling customers because a lot of them won't answer the Chicago area code when I call their cell and other customers I give my number if they are wondering where their delivery is or some shit and that way they won't be calling my personal phone when I'm on vacation or something.
>>
>>16255588
You probably didn't have "Swift" on the side of your truck.
>>
>>16255653
Yeah, my company used to pay our cell phone bills, then they just got us a bunch of those Handheld devices with the scanner and internet and all that shit. Still prefer to use my own phone. Doesn't matter if I have to pay for it, that's what it's for, and it's MY phone. It works like it's supposed to, and isn't tracked.

>that way they won't be calling my personal phone when I'm on vacation or something.

This is definitely a risk. I just ignore any number that isn't in my contacts, or doesn't leave a message/text. In closing, Fuck iPhones.

It is a violation of federal law to use wasp spray in a manner inconsistent with it's labeling.

It actually seems like it is going pretty well in the fishin thread. We did a ~$20 budget and then everybody who joined in mentioned what type of fishing they like to do. So for $25, you can send a handful of lures or baits and it is pretty easy to shop for people.

But there is another thread for the /out/ Secret Santa and it is just retarded. They are just posting Amazon Wishlists so you can go on there and buy stuff for anons without knowing the address or info. But with that system, somebody could just post like 15 wishlists, get a bunch of gifts, and there is no way of knowing if they ever even bought stuff for other people. Plus Secret Santas are supposed to be a suprise and with the wishlist you know exactly what people ordered.

>>16261986
I follow this flowchart.

Some people don't idle, and fuck 'em. In summer it's too hot, need A/C. In winter it's too cold, need heat. In Canadian winter it's too cold, won't survive the night without heat and the engine may not start if it gets too cold. Just set both tractor and trailer brakes so you aren't running the compressor too often.
>>
>>16261986
I don't know shit about trucks. You guys actually idle them overnight and shit?
>>
>>16262116
I always idle when fuelling.
>>
>>16262124
Yeah. Mostly for comfort reasons in the summer, and during the winter when it's really cold you run the truck to keep the fuel from gelling.
>>
>>16262124

Yep. Don't you set your furnace/electric heating/air conditioner at home to run as required overnight? Same thing, except it's a diesel engine. Typical engines burn 0.7-0.9L/h at idle. I've idled for days when dispatch abandoned me away from home.

>>16262129
I leave the reefer running, but turn of the tractor mostly because I'll usually climb on top of the front wheels to clean the windshield, and would rather fall on a hot non-running engine than a hot running engine.
>>
>>16262161
>Typical engines burn 0.7-0.9L/h at idle

Jesus fuck. My car only burns 0.1L/hour when it's settled in properly. I thought diesels were meant to be efficient?
>>
>>16262203
That is efficient, for an engine the size of a smart car that needs to pull 80,000lbs+ up the side of mountains. Cruising down the highway is about 35L/100km.
>>
>>16262148
>>16262161

Heh, isn't that bad for the engine? Are the cabins built to mitigate exhaust and all that shit? etc...

I had no idea truckers were idling for that long when just parked
>>
>>16262213
Yeah, but you don't need all that mass moving when you just need to charge batteries and run heaters.
Why don't they just give you APUs?
>>
>>16262236
Almost all have the exhaust pipe above and rear of the sleeper, and hot exhaust rises so it's not an issue. It's not really bad for the engine, they're designed with the knowledge that they will frequently idle overnight. The only real issue is that the DPF (diesel particulate filter) can fill up after 30-ish hours of idling; which causes an automatic engine de-rate (limited power and speed). Normally it does an automatic clean cycle when going down the highway. The filter can be cleaned in 10-20 minutes with a parked DPF regen, triggered by a switch in the cab. It causes the engine to run at a higher RPM, allowing the exhaust to get hot and clean the filter.

>>16262252
APU's are expensive compared to the fuel cost of idling overnight (about $4-8 per night). They also add weight, so less cargo capacity. Some lots do have restrictions on idling, but they're not enforced so there's no incentive to install them.

Idling doesn't bother me. At least until some damn Cascadia shows up with the drier popping off with a thump and hiss every ten seconds. Or the Prostar that runs the idle up to 1200 rpm so the engine cooling fan comes on with a belt chirp and fan roar every thirty seconds.
>>
>>16262355
>engine cooling fan comes on with a belt chirp and fan roar every thirty seconds.
That actually would wake me up in the Cascadia, so I started turning the switch on to keep the fan on all night. Would be nice if everyone did it.
>>
>>16262368
>>16262355
>>engine cooling fan comes on with a belt chirp and fan roar every thirty second
I was in a T660 with an ISX that did this, except at 800rpm (wouldn't idle unless i set cruise). I'm glad to be out of that shit
>>
>>16262252
>Why don't they just give you APUs?
Because they're a giant pain in the ass. Damn things are always breaking and the last thing you need is another thing needing service on a truck since the truck and trailer is bad enough. Furthermore they neither heat or cool as well as the factory installed systems that are powered by the engine.
>>
>>16262292
Your point on weight is moot in the US, as there's an exemption for APUs. I can technically hit something like 80,400lbs gross and I'm legal thanks to that. APUs also are slightly more fuel efficient than running the engine, not to mention that running an APU instead of the engine equals fewer running hours and therefore less wear and tear on the engine. >>16262355
I had to be that guy one night. APU wouldn't start and the batteries were shot so I called the shop and they told me to high idle the truck all night. Thankfully it was cold as balls so I think the fan only kicked in once or twice an hour.
>>
>>16262401
So what you're saying is that there's a gap in the market for a small, reliable APU that doesn't go wrong and actually does the job.
>>

I love the bay truck because I can whip that thing around so hard. Worst that happens is a case slides up against the door and I have to catch it when I open the door. Or just make a hard turn the other way so it goes back on the pallet.
>>
>>16262468
I don't work for the DC, nigger, I have to unload those trucks. The most I do is backload egg RPCs, which are wrapped, and pallets.

>>16262470
>Worst that happens is a case slides up against the door and I have to catch it when I open the door.

Sometimes, if certain loads aren't secured or slide off pallets, it will jam they door shut and we have to open it up with a forklift.

Generally, that only happens when it's a huge double stacked pallet, and the entire thing slides, though.
>>

>Does your APU supply mains voltage too?
They can, it just depends on what was bought. Had a truck with a DynaSys apu that was basically a genset that powered an electric A/C unit or electric heat. Did pretty damn good at keeping the cab comfy and all the power you could want but broke all the time and could only be serviced at a couple of places in the nation. Now all our trucks have ThermoKing TriPacks that are weak sauce in comparison and only supply 12v from something like a puny 60amp alternator. OTOH they don't usually break but when they do they can be serviced everywhere.

I'd still rather idle but if not then I'd want something like the DynaSys setup up, just reliable and also able to be serviced where ever I might be.

What are y'alls favorite stretches of interstate?

Mine is I55 between LaPlace and Hammond, Louisiana. Pic related. Elevated highway through 40 miles of swamp, with nowhere for cops to hide.

Not a trucker by the way, just curious.

I've seen a post on some site about a guy that did that. He pulls a fifth wheel RV with his semi, and there's enough space between the back of the cab and the fifth wheel hitch to put his smart car, so he keeps some ramps around and that's what he uses to get into town.

When I went to Miami I had the luck of delivering to UPS. I parked in their complex and bobtailed into Miami Beach. After I was cut loose the following Monday and looking for fuel and a reload I quickly realized the parking situation in Miami. Ended up on the side of a service road off a random exit that happened to have an adequate shoulder.

Strange things can happen when you bobtail. I don't ever recommend taking a truck down the main strip of Miami Beach. I literally had 5 asians on Segways bumbling in front of me for about 30 minutes in traffic. Meanwhile the basketball Americans were zipping around me on their ghetto rat scooters.

I was probably on the main strip for about 45 minutes due to traffic

You don't need to watch any videos. Shit is so simple a monkey could do it. Just make sure the trailer is the right height so the fifth wheel just barely has to lift it when you slide under. Then back it in right in the center with a tiny bit of speed. Before you even get out to hook up the brakes, do your lil tugjub and then pull the tractor forward to make sure the kingpin is locked. Red goes on red, blue on blue, raise landing gear, and do your thing.

So our dedicated got dropped since the investors with a stake in the company said we "cost too much to run." Despite having the highest on time percentage and the ability to move crazy amount of freight compared to the dedicated's previous fleet of 12 trucks.

Anyway, I'll have the same DL, a possible cut in cpm but and increase in weekly miles, as well as a change to drop and hook freight. But I don't know if this is a sign to find a new company or just stick with it until I hit two years.

Whiney in all seriousness what do make per mile and what's your average miles?
I'm at 50cpm and around 2500 miles at Crete, with $110 health insurance, free life insurance and a good 401k.
I started at Crete with 8months experience out of CR England, been with them 8 years.

.43cpm at around 2200-2500 miles. $160 a month for health insurance, small amount of life insurance and I'm not sure about my 401k so I just invest a percentage in stocks. We also had a $100/wk. bonus.

No it was comically dull actually. I saw the first cop light the guy up on an adjacent road, no doubt for his one blown out headlight. As I passed, I noticed he pulled out behind me. At first I thought maybe he was looking for a decent spot to pull over, but then he passed me at a speed best described as 'with little urgency.' The three cops that came after him were better described as 'about to beat this motherfucker.'

I would love to get some of that back-pay too since the federal government is trying to fix the OT pay situation as well.

At our last meeting, we had some drivers complaining about that. I mean I'm sure Pepsi has some top-notch lawyers who make sure the employees get screwed and the company doesn't have to pay actual overtime but if some shit happened I could get a nice little check.

It's so fucked up though. In some aspects, we are technically hourly employees but for the most part we are salary and comission. I have no idea what loopholes they jumped through to make that but I still don't understand my paycheck completely.
>>
>>16272781
Neither.

>>16272910
Is it difficult to get a job there?
>>
>>16273078
They're paying us ~$6.50/hr for overtime. How the fuck does that make sense?

Even if you assume the base pay (without commission) is for 8hrs, that ends up being $14.38/hr. So if they paid us real OT (not factoring commission, just based on our real hourly pay), we should AT LEAST be getting $21.56/hr for every hour over 40 we go.

I can get 2000 cases for the week and if it takes me 60hrs to get that all done, I make like $100 more than if it took me 40hrs. It is totally not worth taking the time to do shit right based on that pay system.

How hard is it/what is required to get Hazmat endorsement? In Hockey Territory its a four hour, often online course called TDG, or Transportation of Dangerous Goods, completely separate from drivers licenses.
>>
>>16272781

Don't believe what the entire internet has to say about Swift, they're definitely the company you want to go with.
>>
>>16273235
In the US it is a multiple choice test (a bit more than the 15 question tanker and doubles+triples endorsement test) and then you have to pay ~$90 for a background check and wait for that to come back clean and you are good.

>>16273217
Ehh, we're not union like the Miami location.

I'm waiting to see what kind of raise we get this year. I think last year's raise was decent but the one before that was bullshit. They gave us a $1/day raise on the base pay (<1%) and then a couple cents on the commission. That made me really distrust the company because the HR guy came in with his PowerPoint saying that we will end up making more with the raise to commission instead of the base pay. He did the math using the example of a driver's paycheck where he had 2800 cases for the week and that is like the heaviest route on the heaviest week of summer and we average nowhere close to that so we all talked a bunch of shit to the HR guy and he played it off like "Oh, I just picked this week and this driver at random!" but everybody saw right through the bullshit.

And that's why I'm glad I work by myself all day. Those big company politics and scheming are ridiculous and I could never play that game. That's why I don't see myself at Pepsi in the distant future because I would rather do the job right than play the game just to make numbers look good.
