Blog: Working on orange CRX that I got yesterday for 300 bux. Even though it was fine yesterday, today was no start. Probably because the PO did shit wiring and it's wet out today. In retaliation, (rather than fucking around with garbage) I tore the entire fucking dash out and went to town on the wiring. Took out a bunch that went to a security system. Gunna verify everything and improve his shitty swap. I have 95% of the missing interior staged in the basement so it'll be a complete car. Put other CRX in storage for winter.

Take it to a machine shop that knows what they're doing, have them remove the galley plugs and then have them hot tank it.

If an engine is taken apart, probably best to rebuild it. When bolts are torqued, their threads are stretched. The non chicken shit way is replacing anything that had torque on it.

Yeah I'm impressed at how it looked inside. That Mobil 1 Extended synthetic oil is no joke.

Timing belt and tensioner both looked great too but I swapped them anyway.

Only issue is we had to guess the head bolt torque. There were various amounts of torque levels for various D series engine but mine wasn't listed nor could I find it online. Ended up just doing D16Z6 torque because the parts I bought were for that anyway.

Mobil 1 isn't much of a meme oil, I've used in every Nissan I've owned. Been running Royal Purple in my Integra for a bit now since It has been and will continue to sit for awhile. Not entirely sure why full synthetic doesn't piss out the front main like conventional and synthetic blend. I was always told pure crude is what doesn't piss out every opening, however it's been opposite for everything I've owned.

You're in luck, a D16A is a D16Z6. A D16Y5/7/8 is also the same. So is the later ZC.

Heat and prolonged use does thin oil, however.

Do you want an OEM cluster or swap in something from another car?

Here's a picture of a custom job I did. So if you have some questions about that I can probably help.

Headunit is pretty much just like legos. If you can do simple electronics stuff you're good to go. My girlfriend who is not in the least bit skilled as far as that stuff goes was able to replace her speakers and head unit by herself.

>>16253272
is that the s2k gauge?

how do you put a digital gauge from another car into an older one? i don't understand how it "translates" speed.
>>
>>16253328

So VSS works using something called a "hall effect sensor". Basically, there's a little gear that is spun by the transmission, and attached to that gear is a magnet. There's a sensor that is sensitive to magnets, and anytime it sees the magnet, it makes a pulse. (The wire is normally 5v and gets temporarily grounded when the magnet is near)

More pulses = faster speed.

The S2k cluster has a certain rate per MPH ratio. And so does the B series tranny in that car. So I made a little converter using an arduino and it just increases the pulses proportionally so that the cluster tells the correct value.

Now, in older cable driven speedometers it's a little different. There's a gear in there and a little reed switch. That reed switch opens and closes and creates pulses (similar to the hall effect sensors above).

All you'd need to do is take that pulse and route it to your ECU/cluster (if cluster is digital)

Does that make sense? I can explain specific parts if it doesn't.

Pretty easy if just swapping with the same one. Just gotta pop your dash bezel off and unscrew the cluster from the dash and plug in the new one. If you want to keep the miles accurate then you can move the mileage counter to the new one too.
>>
>>16253171
Just get a manual 2015 civic. If you don't want a manual, I recommend a corolla

Ordered my shifter bits at the dealer. Hopefully they show up tomorrow so I can get my exhaust and shifter fixed all at once. After that it's tires because I'm in danger of something busting. I'll probably just install my extra tire i got in the closet while I get the money for a set.

What do you think of Honda Jazz/Fit

Would you recommend the new ones? or should I look into getting one of the older ones.

Is it possible to make them a bit more of a fun daily driver?

also are the new automatics supposed to be good cos it looks like only the cheapest base model comes in manual
>>

They look super practical. Though with the Civic finally in hatch form again I think I'd sooner get that in manual.

Middlesex County, not a good driving area at all. Cape Cod has a lot of 3G Preludes for some reason, but I haven't seen a 2g statewide since 2009 or so. If you ever want to buy an an old car, go to Cape Cod since they tend to have very low mileage. I can't believe how many pre-1990 cars are still being daily driven there.

Massachusetts in general is a bad state to drive in, the people dont know how to drive, the roads are either in disrepair or congested, and the police constantly patrol in unmarked cars and set up speedtraps by the dozen on the interstate.

Cape Cod is nice, but the cost of living is too expensive for a place that shrinks fifteen feet every year. I would buy a project car from there if the pricing wasn't as inflated as their real estate.

Disregarding the obviously dated body and interior design, in all practicality, it works. USDM models save gas, very reliable, rugged, small, albeit not very fast. That's where you should go and swap it for a K20 motorset. Lots of suspension upgrades available.

How's your oil level? Was it trying to stall? If you bought a Prelude and don't check the oil every two days, that's not good. Elaborate on what's going on.

All you need to replace the rear main is the seal itself. Though if you need to tear the fucker down that far, do more maintenance as needed. Luckily, like most Hondas the trans drops through the bottom.
>>
>>16261587
Well, why buy a shop manual when I have the internet? I can get the same answers.
>>
>>16261681
It wasn't stalling or trying to. But, I did notice that the RPM's dropped significantly even as I accelerated, that was my first clue that it was fucking itself over. It took 2 full quarts of oil to get the oil light off. Then it ate those two quarts in about 10 minutes. Luckily, I had gotten it off the highway. The oil pressure was fucked, and the pan is fine. I checked where the front main seal was, no major leakage or anything That tells me it is probably the rear main seal, or it is burning a shit ton of oil. Thing is, it wasn't smoking to shit, I mean, that I could tell, as I just put sea foam in the tank to clean the injectors and such. I checked the coolant, it is slightly low, but not dangerously so. So, I didn't totally overheat the engine and crack the block, probably. I was just wondering if I should just replace all the seals or do more if I was taking the engine apart anyway.
>>
>>16261778
Well, I guess that would count as trying to stall.
But it didn't.

Sounds to me it's probably worth taking apart and rebuild, that or swapping in a lower mile B20A.

B20As burn a lot of oil and at the rate you're loosing it, it could be both burning and slowly leaking. B20As don't have the same problems the B21s have, however they still burn a fuckton of oil when not maintained in the past.

Lots of design flaw that can be corrected with aftermarket shit though. They're worth building, however you could also H22 swap it.

I want your guys' input. If I do end u buying, should I just do all the fluid changes and belt changes just to have some history to start or should I just not even buy the car?

Focus on suspension. If you don't mind some comfort being taken away for handling, you can put on adjustable coilovers to give the car a lower center of gravity and let it corner quicker. You can also put wider wheels with a stickier tire for more grip. Get a catback exhaust on it so the general exhaust note is nice every time you drive.

I guess sitting for too long is the worst thing you can do to a car. Hope it becomes tolerable at least. I'd keep the windows open on non rainy days. That helps I think.

>>16263273
It was totally empty aside from the roaches. Also noticed it had a second 12V plug which is pretty convenient. It's just super weird that they would be only in the armrest and nowhere else. They usually are everywhere.
>>
>>16263273

Also the previous owner (bro in law's mom that passed) was one of those hoarders so that probably had something to do with it.

Luckily the car wasn't too dirty. Basic vacuuming of small white dog hair and wiping the dash down with wipes we found in the trunk and it looked great. She had really bad vision though so it's got some scuffs here and there. He's not a car guy though so no fucks given.

>>16263312
Roaches are fucking awful. Especially those tiny ones. Roommate's sister had a plague of them until I talked to the EcoLab guy at work. He suggested some syringe of peanut butter looking stuff and it wiped them out. They killed electronics and shit. Dunno how they tolerated it.

So the OEM down pipe I'm gonna use until I get a better header has a small problem. The bolt holes for the flange are too small for the bolts that came with my test pipe. I can either try to drill through it or get smaller bolts to fit. Drilling would probably be a bitch.

So Rex update.

Good news:
>Put it on a lift and the guys said the frame is surprisingly intact, minus the rust.
>Mechanics said they couldn't duplicate the noise and it was probably nothing, didn't even charge me for it.
>Gonna let me hang out in the shop on a weekend to learn stuff about cars.
>Louvers came with all of the hardware that we need.

Bad news:
>Rust in certain places is pretty bad and makes awful noises when going up on the lift, which will eventually need to be cut out and welded.
>Another paint bubble surfaced, they said if I drove it in the winter "there wouldn't be much car left."
>Louvers had two broken welds where there's not a lot of metal and may resort to window weld.
>Waiting on check to come from internship to pay for fixes

Lots of mixed feelings right now.
>>
>>16271986
It's so hard to enjoy an old car. Nature is a bitch, man.
>>
>>16272046
Especially how humans try to counter it: Roadsalt.

Someone needs to do a study on how effective it is on making places safer and how it causes billions in damage to roads and cars.
>>
>>16271986
Where's the rust at? If it's near the torsion bars or panhard bar that aint something you're going to be cutting out and fixing
>>
>>16272137
It's right behind the wheel wells/foot well area.
>>
>>16272286
Yeah that's pretty close to the torsion bar mount. You'll know when it gets there because the torsion bar will tear itself off the car when you hit a bump. That's definitely not something easily fixable after the fact
>>
>>16272352
They said it would be fine to put on a lift over and over, but it would still need attention. I got some of that rust killing paint stuff to slow it down at the very least and somewhat preserve it until I can afford to have it cut out and welded.
>>
>>16272370
Keep in mind it's unibody so cutting and welding isn't ideal anyway. If you want to get serious about hanging onto a car, you should try to locate a good shell to start with
>>
>>16272390
Yeah, they said it would be best to find one with those bits intact, knock out the rust on mine, then cut the good bits out and put them on. Something along those lines, but they were pretty positive about it,
>>
