found a gr650 for sale for 900 australian, not currently working but I'm pretty sure all it needs is an oil change and to clean the carbs. what do you guys reckon, pic related
>>
>>16212769
If bike rides straight and handles fine, cosmetic frame damage does not mean much.
>>
>>16212836
If it's been sitting for a long time you should really rebuild the engine to check for anything that could go catastrophically wrong. 900 bux isn't bad though.
>>
>>16212780
Nice machine. A BMW without a ton of shit hanging off it is fun and easier to work on. No accident it looks like the Reg Pridmore racers from the glory days.

Ignore this lunatic:

>>16212844
>If it's been sitting for a long time you should really rebuild the engine to check for anything that could go catastrophically wrong.

Since Straya and where it's sitting I presume dry storage. I would bring a car battery and jumper cables to spin it over.

Compression tester would be a good idea. Perform compression test on both cylinders. Will likely be on the low side from sitting but should be within 20 or so psi of each other.

Look at spark plugs. Should not be oily. See online spark plug charts.

Dunno Straya prices but I assume they are higher than CONUS by a lot. Carb cleaning (pull the petcock and ensure fuel tank is clean too), fresh fuel hoses etc if dried out and a thorough inspection is all ya usually need.

I've been balls deep into many, many garage sitters at the indy shop I've worked since the mid '80s. I don't do "precautionary rebuilds". Unless the fucker was parked next to salt water (in which case it would be a rustball and you'd not be asking!) engines don't just go bad from sitting unless outdoors in the rain with water ingress to intakes etc.

When ya get it home, go OCD on the wiring, including grounds, and make sure all is well. Pine-Sol the carbs. Pure Pine-Sol beats commercial carb dip and I've used pretty much all of those. Cheap ultrasonic cleaners work fine but not required.

Get JIS screwdrivers. Vessel brand are OK.

If tires show dry rot on the sidewalls, replace. They won't die instantly but they won't stick well either. Do not hoon without decent tires, but you can ride on old meats for a considerable time.
>>
>>16212872
Have an extinguisher handy. I'd assume it will belch and fart, maybe run a few revs.

I put more stock in compression test and plug inspection than start attempts, but ya won't hurt anything. I'd just set the fuel tank aside for test spin. Remember engines read low from sitting but not insanely low. Should cold test about 100 psi (hold throttle open) minimum, 130-ish is better, but you can spray WD-40 or other light oil into combustion chamber to see if rise. Verify spark of course.

Find a manual or forum where someone can tell you typical compression. Carl Salter site may have a free manual for download.
>>
>>16212887
Yeah, guy who is selling it bought it a few years ago from some dude on a farm, had been sitting in the barn for years, apparently it was only running on one carb when the guy put it in the barn and it hasn't been turned on since, battery VERY dead. thanks for the advice, if it turns I'll probably pick it up considering once its running resale over here seems to be in the 4-6k range
>>
>>16212896
Tank is all ready off, the guy bought it as a project but apparently didn't have time, I assume he hasn't done much with it seeing as pic is from when it was in the barn and alot of the cobwebs are still there. no rust in the tank though which is good I assume. never done much with bikes but have alot of friends who have. thought it would be a fun project.
>>
>>16212836
clean the carbs is often slang for "this hunk of shitting has been yard decoration for the past decade and who the fuck knows what when awry in the mean time or in what state is what put away"

I'd say save up. For a bike 2/3 times as much money you get something 10 times better, easily.

It's rightfully a shitbike.

You can always sell it later for more money. Buying a motorcycle is not marriage.

Get gud at getting 'em running and it becomes second nature. I see yard and garage sitters as opportunities.

BTW don't totally disassemble carbs to clean them. Everything "inside the float bowk" is typically enough. AVOID separating linked carbs so you don't have to sync them. Pull the slides and don't dip them. A washoff with cheap toluene carb spray is fast and easy. When removing jets and emulsion tubes use a screwdriver which fits the jet. ROUND shank, hollow ground "gunsmith" style screwdrivers or typical screwdriver bits are best. You can bring carb to hardware store to match if need be.

The common screwdriver bits on multi-bit screwdrivers often work well.

To get yer mixture screws back as they should be, I turn them in gently until bottomed, note the turns and fractions of a turn, then disassemble.

>Yes the dirty bitch fuses every month. Plus i got stock battery and lights. Taped up 5 spare fuses to the circuit so i never run out.

Fuses a shit, but for some reason Harley has had excellent thermal circuit breakers longer than most Anons ITT have been alive while other makers omit them because cheapmotherfuckers.

I use those and.or blade-style breakers which should be available at local auto store or online to fit your fuse block. If fuse block is fucked I'd replace with inline breakers. Tough inline rubber fuse holders are available but the caps don't close over most breakers. I snip the caps, spooge the contacts with dielectric grease (get a tube, it's wonderful on bikeelectrics) then insert.

That many blown fuses would be odd even on ancient Britbikes, and I'd be troubleshooting what blew them. If it's shitty hand control switches shorting, I'd swap to Japanese.

Rewiring anything that basic is an easy weekend project if you have harness issues.
>>
>>16213366
A full face of proper design is more comfy than any open face or modular, and you are more likely to crash in traffic then out playing on less-traveled roads.

Maxillofacial injuries a double shit with extra toppings. My bro got an accidental kerbie when he flew over the handlebars. He lost all his teeth due to damage plus infection. His wife bragged on how good it felt when he ate her out. If that sounds exciting, go for it.
>>
>>16213379
>Why do you guys still have sand roads?

Handles shakes and vibrates when i press front brake. The fronts new. And the rear tire seems to be loose. I can't do 120. I touched 120 before it crashed. Now at a 100 i can feel the vibrations so i slow down =(
>>
>>16213511
Bent forks?
>>
>>16213511
If the vibration happens after the front brake is pressed I would make sure that there isn't something weird with the front disk or pad? In cars a warped disk can cause feedback through the pedal.
Why do you say that the rear tire feels loose? Do you know if the repair shop checked that the axle isn't bent?.
>>
>>16213529
New frame, handle, front brake, tires, front fender. The full front is new. Even the main frame.
Only engine, back fender, seats and electrics is old.
I really don't know. Im scared it may fall apart soon.
>>
>>16213531
The rear tire makes a sound sometimes.

The repair shop won't have the quality check like where the main factory unit is.

I really don't know how to fix it on my own. I suck at it. I shall take it for a check up soon. Hope i don't die till then.

Also anon thanks if only i knew how to fix it =(

>Streets are the first thing a civilized country deals with.

When there is money for them. Your asserted conclusion isn't well supported in practice. Streets are a convenience, not a survival necessity. I'm sure you really like streets. Learn what they cost to build. No paving material is "free" because it must be processed, transported then applied.

I used to work at a Buick/GMC dealership in the service department and the biggest thing that made it difficult to find a problem was when the customer would say they had a problem with a part, rather than describing what was going on.

So why did you buy the Poo in the Loo?
>>
>>16213448
It's a proven Indian version of a successful British design. They are very easy to service as are many other marques long departed but still serving worldwide.

If your machine is easy to work on, that helps make up for having to work on it and is why the brand has lasted so very long as transport.

You really should study how to troubleshoot and work on it though. Feeding it fuses until something hard fails will cost you more money and downtime. Get or download a service manual and find Enfield and British forums. What one man can learn, another can learn.

Those bikes were never designed to do 100mph. They are capable of it but that is not the same thing.

It probably won't fall apart but you need to stop doing things "your way" and do what was expected of every motorcyclist when that Enfield was designed. If you refuse, sell and buy something modern and Japanese. You can LEARN how to fix it. You have the internet. Google "Enfield forums". Spend an evening reading.

Get a FACTORY service manual. If it doesn't contain a parts book, get that too. The exploded drawings will help you learn. Go to the best forum or two you can find, and post very clear photos along with a detailed description of your problem. This is not an Enfield forum.

It won't hurt you to read. Nobody flew out of their mothers cunt with a wrench in their hand. Simple machines are a good place to start.

I'd check tires, rims and rotor for trueness. I'm not going to write you a book ITT, because that's what service manuals and forums are for.

We are patient and the emphasis was on you learning.

If you can watch local mechanics, perhaps offering to sweep up and do chores, they can teach your a lot. Motorcycling and mechanics in general is a mentoring culture.

If you buy a simple deflecting beam torque wrench you can learn proper fastener torque "feel" that way. Unlike cars, motorcycle fasteners are a bit delicate sometimes.

Be calm and methodical, assume nothing, and you will be fine.

One way to learn about wrenching is if you can find a scrap bike to take apart. Any brand. Working on machinery is a tactile experience. Take your time and all will be well.

What do you have planned for it? Is there any way to make it more reliable? I don't think you can change much in the way of looks other than little tiny bar end bits and carbon fiber stuff. Basically stuff that you have to sit on the bike to see.
>>
>>16214402
The Japanese stickers make it 10% more reliable.
>>
>>16214402
The japanese stickers signify that it's broken and currently in a state of heavy damage.

I've also used enough japanese and chinese parts on it that I think they're justified.

>>16214414
> Is there any way to make it more reliable?
All the reliability stuff is out of the way at this point. Oil pan gasket went and was replaced and should be good for another decade, rear hub has been swapped with upgraded unit, radiator fan replaced with aluminum, EBS relay that sends fuel to #2 cyl on overrun has been moved to cooler location, and radiator has bracket to prevent broken upper radiator.

After that it's just minor maintenance and whatever I manage to break doing stupid shit.

>What do you have planned for it?
Sato Racing rearsets with a reverse shift pattern, catless midpipe and a bodis full titanium system in the far off future (lol$3000), replacing 16-bit ECU with 32-bit fully programmable ECU, AIM MXD dash, maybe with datalogger depending, 44t rear sprocket so I can get a bit more acceleration, and some S21s once my current Q3s die off, and maybe a 1078 fork swap so I can fit some Brembo M50s and upgrade my rotors to 320mm instead of the stock 310s

>I don't think you can change much in the way of looks
Well I could put on frame sliders and stuff. Realistically I'll probably end up adding a few more meme stickers and throw on some 6" amber LED strips under the ram air ducts to serve as front signals.

As far as handling goes it's great and I love the bike. No plans to get rid of it.

Military motorcycles are fucking useless compared to Gators and quads because motorcycles can't carry worthwhile payload, rescue wounded, tow anything, and they occupy both hands while moving. You can buy a surplus diesel on the collector market and then to have a nice slow expensive turd. Petrol engines are more versatile and can burn hydrogen, LP, gasoline, methane etc. Hayes hasn't released what no one will fucking buy.

Do you really want a diesel? Build it yourself. Have a variety of examples. If you won't build one, you don't want one.

If Americuck, Harley parts are plentiful, the frames are roomy, and the transmission and primary drive arrangement are the easiest to use with a transverse diesel conversion. If you like inlines, check the BMW conversions. Kubota diesel engines are plentiful use in the US.

http://dieselbike.net/
>>
>>16214482
I saw one for sale in Europe, seller wanted 25K.
It's too bad that Hayes wont sell the engines to private parties, I want to get 300 miles off of a tank.

>>
>>16214566
>I want to get 300 miles off of a tank.

Fit a larger tank or removable saddle tanks. You don't really want a rare diesel for offroading because once it breaks you are fucked.

The US military didn't choose diesel bikes for any reason besides the common fuel policy which got rid of mogas to simplify combat logistics. After diesel bikes were fielded, quads and Gators were found to be better in every way so the market died and Hayes was left dick in hand.

Remember diesel bike engines are feeble HP producers. You could get long range with a common babby four stroke and have better performance.
>>
>>16214566
I was also interested in a diesel bike but wrote off the idea as useless for how I ride, but slow, heavy Ural platforms are a logical fit for diesel repowers:

http://www.dieselbike.net/ural/ural.htm

Most diesel bike action is in Europe so you could attend a rally or several. That kind of work is best done with experienced bros.

Been thinking long and hard about getting this. Mainly want because can't afford Duc or KTM or Bimmer and I think this is the best value/pound of ADV bike. Honda always does this thing where they make good unremarkable bikes, or turn remarkable ones into shitters and kill the line (VFR, VTR rip).

This is one of those remarkable ones. I'm feelin' it. What does anon think?

how is that not uncomfortable? wouldn't you put a heap of load on your wrists riding forward like that?

20deg angle is nothing
35 deg angle is still comfy. Look at where the footpegs are.

Stop being a nobike. The old VFR800 has a 38deg angle for my manlet ass and its one of the most comfy bikes I've ever been on. Same for the CBR1000F Hurricane.

You guys know a good site to find parts? I cannot for the life of me find parts for my 2011 huqvarna 250te. I can understand why, but I don't like to.

I live in america and its a bit of an odd bike to own her considering the year and ownership at the time of production. Really just want to get it taken care of an sold, which is a shame because it's a beautiful/unique bike with not many miles on it.

ADV bikes are a meme. Most small dual sports are just as reliable over long distances.
DR650 is the best budget ADV bike if you must have the highway comfort.

except dual sports have the highway comfort of a harley sportster

Can't say I've had a forward leaning bike, it just looks uncomfortable. Had about 2,000hrs riding on a CT110 and sitting upright was the most comfortable thing about it because I had to sit with my knees pointing all the way out so I didn't hit the handlebars on them in corners.
>>
>>16215390

Go to a Ducuckti dealershit, sit on any 1x98 that they have with their used bikes. Feel an actual true uncomfortable bike.

kek.

ADV bikes the new do everything machine. Its a different flavor of Super Standard, Sport/Hyper Tourer. Uncomprimised bikes are the new thing and I want one.

I do not however want some shitty 650 Enduro with no saddlebags that will wallow on the highway with saddlebags and a passenger.

Basically what I'm hearing is I should get an Africa Twin.
>>
>>16215466
different generations of the bike, use the 2004-2008 SV650 and the knee angles are almost the same. The hip angles are more acute for the SV650S because of the steeper forward lean.

Yeah that's kinda what an ADV is numbnuts. Except everyone but you agrees that ADVs are to the point where they are good at pretty much everything. NO GREAT. But good.

Actually you sound like a fuckin' nobike dork that has never ridden. Bitch I've taken CBR1000s up rougher shit than can you walk on. If you think the nigger twin is only good at fire roads than you're retarded and have no idea how to ride.

Talking shit about "muh brand" when there hasn't been a su sucki win in World SBK for 11 years, and hasn't been relevant in MXWC since the fuckin' 90s.

Can you get anymore BTFO defending your poor choice of fanboism?

I want a fucking bike that isn't comprimised in any singular area. Holy shit. I want something to commute in, fuck around offroad on, and to cross country on. Holy fucking smoking shitballs I know what tools are for what jobs. I want a fucking swiss army knife you idiot. The entire time we've been talking how have you not understood that.

The 650s are better for offroad, suck balls at 80mph, and buffet your face with wind constantly. I get it. I'm not saying that 650s are bad... Jesus.

IT DOESNT EXIST. Even the tires you choose will compromise the bike for certain conditions.

Anything from a CRF230L to a nigger twin IS a swiss army knife.

Alright, nice bro. I think we have somehow agreed on literally everything, somehow, someway. If a 650 lands on my lap for the right price I won't push it away. But Ima be hunting for that vanilla flavored nigger twin til then.

Wanting a bike that handles decently, can go off pavement, and can be ridden for 800 miles a day shouldn't be this hard.

Thanks for input brosef.
>>
>>16215746
I know my how my thing works when you suck it hard and take my fat load in your sweet boipucci.
>>
>>16215775
glad to help.
800 miles is a long day on any bike.

it is this hard because emissions regs, and for some stupid reason the jap companies refuse to release an an uncorked, lightweight ~500cc dualsport with a tall 6th gear.
>>
Guys. Go to the other thread.

>>16212077
>>
>>16215844
That would be the tits if that came out. My pops has an electraglide and I can't hang with him for 600-1000 miles days on my Ducati. So highway-ability is SUPER important. But I also don't want a fuckin' bagger to do it.

Other choices I had were sport tourers... but naaaaaaah.
>>
>>16215852
Have you thought about just buying two bikes?
You won't need dirt capabilities when you're with your dad and his harley.
>>
>>16215876
Yeah, I have my sportbike soooo. I don't want two MORE bikes. I know n+1 but like, shit. between my RD400, the Duc, and maybe that ADV I ran outta space, anon.

Still tho. Thanks for inputs again.
