weird. I've never heard of this being a big issue on chebbies but a lot of the old F-150s and rangers have this issue. If i remember, it's the throwouts that COULD be the issue (which is simple to fix if you can get into the cylinders themselves) but it could be different on chebbies.
My Ranger has had this issue for a while. Sometimes when parked and when it wants to, I have to move it into second gear then quickly into first in order to actually shift into first. Such is the peril of having le ebbic shitbox beater. You get used to it.

Are you able to shift well without the clutch when manually rev matching 3> 4 or 4> 3? What is the margin of error that you can do so when shifting and how bad is the sound if you're off by 50-100 RPM?

Also:
>over-torqued oil filter
>go to the shoppe to get it off
don't you have those little rubber pulling things? That's what most shoppes use anyway.

Or what you can do is attach steel rods to the blades of a blender and weld the other ends of the rods to the oil filter. Put in on the lowest setting and the Blender removes the oil filter like a breeze.

bought the CRV because it was cheap as fuck, figured I would put some miles on it and flip it for a profit. I'm actually thinking about going to trade it in for an Escape at the end of the month because it's fucking miserable in the mountains. the RX350 is a weird story but basically I bought it from a family member to help him out when he got into a financial jam, it's most likely just going to sit a while longer and he wants to buy it back eventually.

the S550 is the platform name for the 2015+ Mustang.

I really don't know how I manage 20 mpg. I don't drive conservatively and I've got to figure my truck probably weighs 6500 lbs with the cap and everything, and is powered by a gasoline V6.

there really isn't anything I can do to protect the driveshaft, it was just a dumb move on my part that I hope to avoid in the future.
>>
>>16179109
>don't you have those little rubber pulling things?
I do, I even have a set of oil filter sockets. I tried everything. Rubber grips, rubber pad, rubber glove, sandpaper with a rubber glove, The last time I tried with a pipe wrench dented it enough that there was a pinhole sized puncture in it, enough to drip oil pretty well. I was going to try putting a screwdriver through it, but I didn't want to shear it all off, then I'd have real problems.

>Are you able to shift well without the clutch when manually rev matching
For the most part yeah, I had it up into 4th and 5th on the highway at 2-2.5k rpms shifted between the two a lot, never noticed a jump on the rpm gauge nor did I feel anything.

I've driven manuals where you could shift with your pinky finger, this thing needs a firm grip to get into first, lots of stiffness then *click* feeling it is in. shifting into 2nd is fine, no where near as hard. The only way I could think of how to describe it is like clunky-loud-stiff eastern european truck.

Need further advice on fog lights:
What can take H3c bulbs? Can most $50 fog light sets take these bulbs or do I have to get some weird standardised sizes?

>driveshaft
>nothing you can do
Nigga. I just outlined three methods that work very well: half-pipe armour with a mild amount of welding knowhow, lifting (which you're doing and hopefully going to 39 tyres, right?), and skid plates. Unless you're saying that it's already done and it's not worth armouring at this point. If that's the case, then I say "):". Also, that's a noble thing to do with the RX350. They're comfie AF in the middle and great suspensions. If only you could take the seats out and put them in your F-150, heh.

Anyway, let us know how you end up with your F-150. I see these so often on the road with the FX(offroad) trim and would love to see more of them actually off the road.
Also, please don't actually lift your Mustang and put it on 35s, that was just a hilarious idea that I thought of as a solution to the balding tyres
I just don't see any type of armor/cover methods working well with a 2-piece driveshaft that obviously needs to be able to move just as much as the axle does. I would think they would just cost me clearance, if anything. the lift itself is on the way, the coilovers I'm using won't be available until probably early next year so it will probably all go together in spring. I'm probably going to change the exhaust setup again because it's stupid loud right now but other than that I think it'll be left alone for a few months. and the Lexus has the F Sport/Crafted Line package so it's got some extra rare ebony/cabernet seats that are stupid comfortable. I do really like the way that vehicle drives.

(also, that guy posted the comment literally 29 seconds after I posted the q t coffee date swiftie. y he so mean?):

Anyway, the driveshaft armour is a fair point. Most of the older models I've seen litrally just cover it with a suspended metal plumbing pipe cut in half and welded in place that costs 0.5 inches of clearance. It's cheap enough but may not be compatible with your model.

But for sure! Keep us informed on how the clearance goes.

>>16179179
If you can shift with a small margin of error without a clutch, your transmission will still be good. When done well (within 50 RPM), it should feel exactly like shifting when you're in neutral (and more often it will feel smoother). That should be your baseline of clutch-in shifting feels.

Also, again. First gear selection (and sometimes with reverse) is a common issue on a Ferds and older truccs. That's just how the cylinders were designed. If he's charging you a lot of money to get into it, I would decline.
If he says that the clutch disk is failing and there's not chatter, it's a hard one unless you actually go, drain all the fluids, and take a look for yourself. It smells pretty sketchy but there's always that 1% chance they're telling the truth. I would recommend doing that and familiarising yourself with the vehicle if you plan on owning it for more than 3 years.
Bar that, get a mechanic that only does mechanic works because he can (and derives the bulk of his income doing other things).

when I get it back ill try some clutchless shifting and she what she does.

It's like hiking with trucks basically (my picture is not overlanding)

Basically you drive from one destination to another, all off-road, while camping either in the bed of the truck, on the ground in a tent, or above the truck in a rooftop tent.

An overland trip can range from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the route, and it's the kind of off-roading where's your vehicle is your lifeline for an extended amount of time. I'm not very good at explaining but I hope I got the basic gist of it.

TL;DR: Its camping in your truck as you off-road from one place to another

Yeah. I love Denver's bipolar weather.

I bought it with one specific purpose in mind: take me to the remote and beautiful places in Colorado. I bought her some new shoes, and we did our first run at Yankee Hill in Ouray (my first offroading as well). It was glorious. Mountain views. Abundant wildlife. Myriad flowers. Abandoned mines. Was happy to find that wifey enjoyed it (she's quite prissy, generally).

The next day, we did mountain passes and gulches. It was reminiscent of the crazy Mountain Goats on the Discovery Channel, you see them clinging to tiny outcroppings halfway up what looks like impassable terrain. How the fuck do they get up there? How the fuck do they get back down? They're fearless, compact but tough, and don't give a fuck.

Then I remembered My Little Mule from the movie Romancing the Stone. My Little Mountain Goat.

Seemed apropos. Pic related is the trail to Yankee Hill from that day.

On another side note, it's a bitch to keep clean, and had faded. For my truck to look presentable I have to spray the whole thing with that plastic trim restorer shit or tire shine.

Door panel comes off super easy. I had to replace my window regulator a couple months back and all you have to do is take off the window crank, one screw in the door lever and two in the door handle. Everything else pops off. My lock was also a bit sticky. Just spray some liquid wrench in there and everything gets magically better.

Unfortunately my front driver side caliper is stuck now. So it's off to the wrecking yard to grab a new one on saturday.

The health effects of acetone and butanone (MEK) are extremely exaggerated. Especially since they're endogenous (produced in your body) and occurs in all sorts of foods and drinks.
Gloves are and respirator are meh. Safety glasses are good idea in general, though. If you're doing it outside, you're fine. You should not be doing it in a concealed space like a garage or bathroom for too long.

Hi /ORG/ I'm a noobie here, only been off roading with friends.

I want to buy the best off road truck I can for ~$5000. I'm in the Los Angeles area so the market is full of trucks.

Essentially, I want to go on long camping trips, so a Wrangler is too small (not enough storage space).

My top choices so far are:

1. 2001-2008 Tacoma
2. Toyota Land Cruiser
3. Jeep Cherokee

Am I on the right track? Anything I need to look for in particular when checking these models out?

Thanks dudes, looking forward to getting out there soon. Fucking city sucks!

since your budget is only $5k go with the cherokee.
this is coming from an 80 owner btw.
the tacoma and lc are unequivocally better in every way but the lc has expensive parts, extensive maitenance schedule and not a huge aftermarket. the tacoma you get for $5k will be a total shitheap with absurd miles for that price.
the jeep is going to be the best with your low budget. it is cheap to maintain and cheap to mod.
either increase your budget or go with the jeep.

I've found the Cruisers to be anything but extensive to maintain.
Also curious as to what you find lacking in terms of aftermarket for the J80 Cruiser?
Agreed on the price range though, you won't find much Cruiser for $5k.

the landcruiser is a toyota flagship vehicle. my 80 cost $50k new well over 20 years ago. parts for it were never cheap because it was quite an expensive vehicle, and since they are not in production anymore they have only gone up. read the cost of ownership thread on mud, gives a lot of insight imo.

wouldnt say the aftermarket is lacking, its just much more expensive. you have hundreds of choices for jeep parts - you have no where near that for land cruisers because they arent as popular.

What are the restrictions on Elk and Whitetail in New Jersey in the spring? I doubt they'd let you do off season but it would be financially even for me to swing down to New York / New Jersey if there's a chance I can net an Elk.

Pine Barrens gets weird with the water hazards, you'll get a big pond looking thing that looks deep but is only a foot at most, then you'll get a tiny hazard that's 4.5 feet. The water down there is full of tannic acid from the pine trees so you can't really see the bottom of the water.

>AR

What the fuck. Function is lost on Canadian gun laws so it is illegal to hunt with an AR-15 but legal to hunt with a Czech AK (the CZ858 chambred in 308s). Is any semi-auto illegal to hunt with?
Also lol@ 12ga slugs. Theyre known to bounce off the hides of meesens at regular distances and getting too close to moosensies can be potentially dangerous. The only use for shotguns up north would mainly be for ducks. Otherwise, .308 mushrooms are your best friend.
At that point, I'd trust my .223 over a 12 gauge since I can reasonably put one in the head at 100m instead of going within 20 metres in order to actually guarantee a kill shot and not just wound (and subsequently aggro) the animals up here.

The Funtreks "guide to Colorado back roads" lists about 15 trails within a few hours of the springs. Looks like some pretty good stuff. Looks like it's mostly centered south of Pike's peak near Cripple Creek (Deadheads anyone?) or north of Pike's near Woodland Park.

Non-off-roader here, thinking about picking it up. There's a Suzuki x90 for cheap near me, but it desperately needs a new coat of paint. Does off-roading fuck up your paint too much, or would it be worth it to get it a new coat?

Tbh senpai you shouldn't care, paint jobs are nice but it isn't mandatory
It also depends on what kind of off roaring you do since some things do more harm to your coat than others.
Imo I would get a new paint job just to make it feel that much more like you're getting a new car but at the same time I've had a thing for fucked paint/rust on cars ever since I saw Mad Max and thunderdome in the early 90's so I would leave it be but it's totally up to you

The biggest ones in America, down in cajun country. This is the Sheridan WMA in the Atchefalaya. This is what it looks like in summer, a lot more like what you see on national geographic.

The rear diff has a ratcheting locker and that's about it. I'm not a big mudder. I more like driving around to places I've never seen than taking the hardest way there. If there's a big pit and then a little track to the side, I'll take the side every time.

All this bottom land is still a little soft, but not bad. The trails in summer are closed because it's all under a few inches of water. Unfortunately, they've changed a lot of them to ATV only, but nobody has ever bothered me since a Tracker is actually under their side-by-side size and weight limits.
>>
>>16190091
The cost (what the retailer pays) for a K02 size 31x10.50x15 is $150.13 right now. Canadian tire is making money on the sale of tires, the other places are attempting to rip people the fuck off.
>>
>>16192329
Where did you get that figure from?

Also I would say, to the other anon, that CT probably gets bigger discounts being what looks to be a large chain store? So they probably buy 10,000 tyres at a time, where your small tyre shops only buy 100
>>
>>16192441
I own three full service garages, that's where I got the figure.
>>
>>16192448
Wow that's very helpful.
What is the price of wrangler duratracs and where are you located?

Also, all the little Canadian Tyre logos on their actual tyres don't mean shit? I hear they don't actually give maintenance by brand and you have to actually take it back to CT for service if anything happens
>>
>>16192650
Duratracs depending on size will run me around $115-160. I'm in the US and don't know much about Canadian tire, but all of us pay around the same amount for tires. Little shops try to make up for low volume with high prices, because they're stupid and don't know how to grow a business. If CT is putting logos on the tires I'm sure it's just to more easily identify that the tires were bought there, for road hazard warranties and free services, like alignments and balancing.
>>
Anyone in the NC area that wants to goto uwharrie its always a good time.
>>
>>16192761
I got $240 each for my 32 DuraTracs available from my shoppe. This is down from $256 on sale at the local offroading shoppes.
Normally, Canadian Tire actually has them on sale for 10% lower than what the shoppes can actually get them for. This really means that the shoppes themselves could go to Canadian Tire and buy 4 set of tyres and theoretically make 10% extra profit on top of the mark-up they do for selling them themselves.

No item should have bulk savings in such magnitude. When it comes to vehicles, I'm sure the "if it's too good to be true" razor applies here.

If Canadian Tire really is manufacturing tyres at such volume, what are they cutting out that is making them cheaper?

Don't be mean, anon. Trips of the devil unrespect ):!!!

Anyway, this is a centre engine which means 50:50 weight. Ridiculously good line of sight due to lack of nose, and in built roll cage. Camper style allows maximised space without the fucking retarded meme of boxy cars and the main thing is the Closeness of the wheels gives it the Jeep benefit without needing larger tyres.

This is why military APCs come in this style as well. But normally, there would be some open diff, independently suspended 6-8 wheelers.

We have snow here and it's too dark to take a picture. But I can't wait for the mud to get to clay consistency and the dirt itself (not rocks) start ripping open U-rings and driveshafts so we have to fix them in -10 degrees centigrade after dragging them out of mud water that freezes your fingers off.

Anyway, to put this back on topic. I looked into the DuraTracs rated around my neighbourhood in Mapleland and they're normally rated for 80 000 klicks. On my dinky little Ranger, I should be able to get 100 000 + on them especially if 10 000 of those are on sand / gravel / dirt.

The Canadian Tire tyres have been consistently dragged behind rated at approximately 60 000.

Whether me spending $400 more on all the tyres is worth it... I guess I'll find out. But to answer >>16190091 fully, I'm actually unsure. Tyre quality isn't something you can just tap on the sides or gauge by eye.

I'm also going to run the Duratracs as all seasons because I'm too lazy to change into offroad tyres every time I head into the cottage or decide to take bae(s) offbroding or find an alternate path to the chalets.

I run chemical contracting so I work (travel) Thursday - Sundays and avoid the bulk of traffic. Ranger's my work vehicle but it's nice to go on the way back from North Ontario to just take back roads and camp out for a night or two. This also means I can't go rock climbing or mudding, though...
Or check crown land maps and see if you can have fun during the 4 hour drives back home. Find a job that puts out and you can oberlanb all ya need!

this may surpize a lot of people but the geo tracker/suzuki escudo/suzuki vitara is a more than capable off roader when given more ground clearnce and bigger tyres because its not as heavy as most off roaders with the bigger engines, it bounces up the trails rather than sink in.

4000-6000 a month depending on the contracting jobs I acquire and how willing I am to make the runs. I work like 12 hours a week and the rest of my time is spent in the lab working on my o. chemistry thesis. If I wanted to do the full 36 hours, I'd probably be able to run up another 8000-10000 per month. But I don't feel like I need the money and benefit more from the mental sanity.
Thesis is going to take another 3-5 years and I'm just glad I have money unlike other students around me who have to nickel and dime stuff.

/k/ taught me to do shit that you love for shit pay every bit. I would love to do a security job in Tanzania or Kenya for the Canadian International Security Forces one day, though. Dribing LAV Mk III through the African Savannas would be peak /ORG/.

I showed this pic to a co-worker (experienced off-roader). He said that because of torque/gearing and engine weight, the drivers used to reverse up the mountain trails to the mining camps.

bait
bāt/Submit
noun
1.
food used to entice fish or other animals as prey.
"herrings make excellent bait for pike"
synonyms: lure, decoy, fly, troll, jig, plug
"the fish let go of the bait"
>>
>>16194614
I would imagine it has to do with weight distribution. With a heavy load on the bed too much throttle could pick the nose up if you're not going up in reverse.
>>
>>16194670
with the low center of gravity I sortof doubt.

If it's rwd, isn't pulling weight better than pushing it when going uphill? Hence reverse? I have no idea how old school drivetrains are set up, mind you. The guy who told me this works at auto auctions in CO, so I'm inclined to believe him. But then again he could be pulling my leg. Les googles, they do nothing.
>>
>>16194689
They were't low riders when new. It's that low because it's laying on the frame. A load on the bed moves the COG up and back, making it far easier to tip back when going up a hill.
>>
Been thinking about getting a crosstrek. Any owners can chime in about how they like it? Offroading looks neat, may take it up as a hobby but primarily to DD because the city streets are awful and littered with cracks and potholes
>>
>>16194727
>primarily to DD because the city streets are awful and littered with cracks and potholes
Then stay away from the Crosstrek. AWD and a rally inspired body style aren't going to help with potholes.

Large diameter, high profile tires are your friend.

Almost all vehicles were RWD up until the 80s. Energy crisis is why we have silly FWD vehicles to squeeze out one or three more em pee jeez.

>>16194670
Nah. Weight distribution is kinda irrelevant when hill climbing in a tightly linked axles like older, bulky cars except for what >>16194714 mentions.

>>16194629
>>16194614
>>16194604
Reversing up a hill would give the advantage of rear wheel steering allowing for more instant corrections. This prevents extreme wheel rotations when you hit a rock and when you brake due to sudden slides, you can more easily correct your sudden jerk in a direction because the vehicle (when rolling down a hill) suddenly becomes FWD.

If you have ever seen a vehicle lose control on a hill and slide parallel to the hill, a lot of the time, inexperienced people will brake which will transfer almost all the momentum of the hill to the SIDES of the vehicles. this is very, very dangerous on steep hills since they often end up rolling down the hill in their top heavy off roaders.
You can prevent this by not going up steep hills, gitting gud fgts, or having all wheel steering (rear wheel steering) like what reversing affords you.

Another method to prevent this when you have a weird drive train vehicle is that when you climb hills, tie a tough rope to your steering wheel (so you can still turn it 90 degrees maximum) and connect it to your hand bar along your windshield blindspot. This prevents over turning on muddy hills.
My friends have used old centre seat seatbelts for this so that they can detach the steering wheel lock in case they need to in emergencies.

Hehe. Spanks, anon.
I just have a dinky little 2010 Ranger I use for work lugging chemicals from city to city. It keeps up with the others on the trails and is more than enough for climbing Canadian shield clay and snow to get to hunting, cabins, and icefishing spots. Unlifted and just upgraded from 30s to 32s. I have absolutely no experience mudding, though.

I started off with a 2010 Colorado 2WD but replaced it because of plastic valences easier to hit, prolific after market / scrap parts, and a smaller trucc with a larger capacity (this 4.0 can tow 6000lbs believe it or not).

No good enough pics because I don't bring my camera (don't even have one) or phone on trails like you people do ):. I'll make sure to get some next week when I try to catch the end of geese migration (though today's weather may have scared them all off):

>>16194768
As an addendum. It's worthy to note that you should NOT try reversing up hills in modern vehicles (especially if you have 4x4). You have more manual traction control if you control the gears going forward than the one gear speed reversing.
This is safer than the damage control that is gained when you lose control reversing. Besides, modern offroaders have now been built to go up hills as opposed to before.
