They are very reliable. I won't say specifically that they are more reliable than a DR or XRL, but they aren't like an MX bike at all. As long as you aren't racing it, oil every 1000 or 1500 miles, oil filter every other change. For reference I'm pretty sure the DR650 calls for 2k oil change interval. Valves are easy to adjust, they aren't shim-under-valve, but screw adjusters. If you slab it on the highway for long periods they are known to burn oil, but so are the air cooled DR and XRL, and the newer KLRs are notorious for this.

Biggest maintenance issues I can think of:
rear suspension bearings are insealed, when you buy one make sure to take the rear linkage and swingarm apart and check/relube the bearings
Earlier bikes [up to '03 I think] had some problem with the clutch rod bushing, replacement is supposedly easy but mine is an '06 so I never had to worry about it
Small end of the piston rod can start to wear on the pin, but I'm not sure what the cause of this is [i.e. hard riding or whatnot] or symptoms.

Problem is the literal point of caferacers were made redudant with advent the traditional sport bikes from, like, the 70's onwards (?). Stripping weight, adding/machining parts to make it as fast and fun as possible. Aerodynamics wasn't a mainstream thing in production motorcycles so removing stuff was the way to go back in the 50's/60's

Nowdays rarely do you really get a caferacer that's built for performance, it describes aesthetics more than anything else. The only real, true caferacers that have (more often that not) had their performance tweaked to highhell are Mid to late 80's K100's from what I've experienced

Considering only old bikes get cafe'd, it's unfair to compare a cafe racer to a modern sportsbike. While aesthetics is a major factor, they end up removing heavy, worn seats, removing extra panels, sometimes they get cleaned up (I know some leave as is for the "patina"), get updated parts, etc. It's not like if everything is about making it look pretty.

You can tell a lot about a cafe racer owners sexual preference by his tires. If he claims to love how a stripped down lightweight bike handles, but he has firestones or ribbed tires on his bike, he probably loves deep throating cocks and poses with his 'cafe racer' on Instagram to get those DMs from leather daddies. The things people did to make slow bikes faster are still valid in the age of sportbikes, but few people try to find speed the hard way. There's tons of good suspension options, plenty of dead weight to shed, and some serious street/track rubber available if you want to drag knee on your old steel frame bike. That's what a cafe racer should be

Sub zero is not normal, riding on ice is not normal, it's an exception and it's dangerous, even more so for inexperienced riders.
I don't plan on buying winter gloves because I don't plan on riding in winter, this is an exception because I've just gotten the bike and I can't bear waiting 3 months to ride it.
The last 3 months have been intense, I got the helmet, the jacket and the gloves, couldn't find the time to get pants and boots. Right now I spend my free time riding, certainly not at home searching boots and pants for hours.

Both similar mileages and price, parts availability due to being actually imported here, so none of that's a concern.

Mainly, I want the Across for looks and its ease of commuting (as my only vehicle, this will be important for the bike), but I really want to do a fuckton of trackdays so the 250RR seems more relevant (especially with that orgasmic 19k RPM sound).

Not buying these solely as beginner bikes, just want something smaller than a 650.

I'm thinking of getting my L's and buying a bike.
What bike would you guys recommend? And before I buy one, how can I know if bikes are really something I want to get into or if it's just a phase?

I'm thinking I might go for a Z300, but I'm worried I'd get bored of it and feel like I've wasted all of the money after a few months.
