HI guise! am i in the club now?

Fuck winter, it reminds me how much water leaks into this thing.

Really wish I could just gut the interior and go at the rust repair, challenging when it's your DD. Still debating on suspension parts to order as well.

Not much going on with the caprice as of today and yesterday. Today I just hooked up everything on the engine. I did the hokey pokey with the passenger side header.

>put it on
>forgot to hook up starter, can't reach with header in the way
>take it off
>put it back on, have all the bolts in but one
>can't get the last bolt in without taking the others off
>take it off again
>put stubborn bolt on first
>have all bolts in but one, again
>this time a different bolt won't go in without taking the other bolts out and leaving the other stubborn bolt threaded in 1/4 of the way
>take it back off again
>correctly have all the bolts in, finally

in other words

>put the left bolt in
>took the left bolt out
>shook the header all about

Man fuck these cheap headers.

should I put a bigger jet in my carb for winter?
>>
>>16157937
How cold does it get where you are now?
>>
>>16157937
What's that going to do?
>>
>>16157937
alternatively you could just keep the choke closed a little bit.
>>
>>16157941
denver, so fairly cold. it's probably going to be like 30-40 on average
>>
>>16157952
You shouldn't have any problem then. Just use the choke while it warms up if you need it. That loooong manifold makes the 300 a bit cold blooded.

Is it really worth it to swap out drum brakes for disc ones?
>>
>>16158295
If you have 4 wheel drum brakes, yes, if you have front discs and rear drums, no.
>>

I am, because FUCK four wheel drum brakes and a single master cylinder.

>>16158295
You can get 4 wheel discs working a lot better than most people think. You can also get drums from a heavier car of the same era, there were some monster drums out there, Galaxie wagons had 11x2.5" drums that can stop just as well as a lot of discs. I swapped to discs because I plan on racing the car but if it was just a street car I've always been fine with drums
>>
>>16158295
despite memes, well tuned drums will stop better than discs.
The problem with them is they got hot real quick if you ride them.
>>
>>16158319
4 wheel drums*

I definitely agree with some dude that it's not worth it to go to discs in the back for a classic
>>
>>16158319
>>16158323
the biggest thing about disks vs drums for me is that ease of future maintenance. No springs, no heavu drums, just easily swap pads and disks.
>>
My fascination with Lincolns is twofold: first, they're great cars. Second, I had a '79 Mark V that I sold because of an ex. I want my life and my Lincoln back; I can't get the time I wasted back, but I can get another Lincoln.

>>
>>16158731
Personally, get rid of the cowl, if you're not using it as a workhorse for heavy shit, drop it 3-4 inches front and rear and keep the rallies.

If you're itching for new wheels, maybe go with one of the replica rally wheels in a 17" or so, so you can keep some sidewall and the clasisc look.

Chrome looks like shit, especially on those, polished are a pain to maintain, black wheels a shit on everything.

Alternatively, go with some slotted mags.

Trying to buy new fucking engine bearings and there's fucking 11 pages of bearings for engines and I got no fucking clue what to get.

I'm pretty sure the crank hasn't been ground. So its standard sized bearing, but then there race, road, PreA, post A, 998, 998 1100, and I got fuck all idea.

I guess I should just phone them.
>>
>>16159897
Phone the place, or it's time to tear shit apart and start measuring, if your shits slightly too big for a bearing it should be, you'd know your shits worn and needs to be reground or replaced.

THINGS I LEARNED TODAY:

Batteries need water apparently. My battery needed water apparently. When I went to start it, the thing wasn't turning over. Then, as the key was still on start, the fucker blew up. Sounded like a 12 gauge going off under my hood. I feel retarded.

I was happy with mine, until one day the accelerator pump ripped in half. For some reason all the stores around me only stock 1408 pumps, and since the car was my daily driver I just hung the carb up on the wall with good intentions on getting the right accelerator pump online, and used an old holley 4150 I had laying around. The edelbrock is still hanging there on my wall, amongst my carb collection. Still waiting for the pump.

Is it possible that my c6 auto has a vacuum operated kickdown? It doesn't look like there's anything that is a manual kickdown. Is that possible?
>>
>>16169174
The C6 in my 68 Lincoln has a kickdown arm.
I've never heard of a vacuum kickdown before.
There should be something connected to the carb throttle linkage for it.

I know the C4s have a Vacuum Modulator, which senses change in the engine's vacuum due to throttle position and load changes. With these changes the modulator adjusts the shift timing of the transmission according to the demand of the engine.

Maybe you old trans has that as well, but the modulator controls kickdown?
>>
>>16169174
your c6 will have a vacuum modulator and a mechanical kickdown. It's possible some previous owner removed the kickdown arm. You don't REALLY need it, but if you don't run it your c6 won't kick down into 2nd when you floor it.
>>
>>16169255
>>16169279
What I know is that it's not an original engine or transmission. It might be connected, I've got to check. I'm pretty sure the mechanical kickdown is there but I'm not sure it's connected
>>
>>16169366
Does the trans shift into a lower gear when you floor it
>>
>>16169394
Yes, why I'm thinking it's vacuum is at like 34mph at part throttle up a hill, it will flutter between gears until I mat it or slow down. Kind of weird.

I agree the best Roadkill episodes are the junkyard rescues.

If the starter solenoid clicks your ignition switch is fine, have you checked the battery?
>>
>>16171262
>How's your starter solenoid?
They just fixed it, the memo states the solenoid wasn't making contact with some shit, i dunno Amish are really good at cursive and i can't read cursive.

The battery is fine. If i jump the terminals on the solenoid it'll crank over just fine.
Somewhere in this mess, something is fucked and i don't know what it could be.
If i could only get over this hurdle I can fix everything else fine.

>>16171278
>have you checked the battery?
It should be fine, all the wires are in shit shape but enough power is making it to the battery that it'll crank if i jump the solenoid terminals.
The relay is grounded on the bolts but the fusebox is hanging loose so i don't know what fuckery has happened to this car.
I hear murmurings on the webs that late 60's barracudas had the solenoid ground wire connected to the relay. I need to trace that wire but I'm pretty sure mine isn't.

So then good chance my ignition switch is trashed?
There's a couple of things that need to be checked with this, Since it's autotragic is has a park safety switch and the shift column is somewhat loose and these dusters also have a starter inhibitor for the seatbelt switch.

i figured if power was making it to the relay then these wouldn't have been a problem?

I believe you are correct, but it depends how it's wired. I thought you meant the starter solenoid clicks [you know the big clunk like when your battery is dead] which would mean power is getting to the solenoid but not through it. Have you checked power across the relay? If power is getting to the relay [it wouldn't click if it had no power] that would mean the ignition switch and Park/neutral safety switch and seatbelt switch are fine, although you can probably bypass those switches if you want to rule them out altogether

Agreed. Electrical is frustrating as all fuck BUT not hard to figure out. Just research up on what type of electrical connectors to use for cars. I used crimp type connectors and I'm having problems with them snapping in half from the vibrations. Maybe it was just the harbor freight brand.

Label anything you touch, cut, move or splice
Use heat shrink tubing for mechanical strength
When in doubt go with an overkill size wire, More won't hurt. unless it's a points resistor wire.
Invest in some wire crimp wires.

that sounds really odd. Is your alternator charging above a certain RPM? I'd also check if there's a loose connection somewhere leading to the radio, perhaps when you gas it the connection opens?

and it doesn't work when it's cold? When you said that reflowing came to mind. It's where people put a circuit board like a GPU or MOBO in an oven at like 280F, Because overtime the solder connections fracture in half from the repeated heating and cooling of on and off cycles. Sticking it in the oven like that 'reflows' the solder, i.e. melting it slightly to 'reflow' the circuit traces.

I don't suggest you stick your radio in the oven. I just wanted to share a theory of mine.

Eh it happens, I'm only familar with it because I run a 1405 and my dads had the 1408 on his truck for a few years. I wasn't after the bigger jets but I didn't want an electric choke.
Either way, like all carbs, they're either spot on and work great, or they always have issues and need tweaking. I had an old q-jet that was rebuilt and flow bench tuned for a stock 305, worked like a fucking champ till it decided to start puking fuel out of the accelerator pump after a few weeks, replaced that, then the needles fucking fell.

The 67-72s look great stock, but they also look great lowered down a few inches, even if you just level out the ass, or on their damn frame.

Agreed on the steels and beauty rings, I'm just partial to slotted mags.
>>
>>16174213
If you know what you're doing and can follow a guide, as well as know how to tune it go for a rebuild. Rebuilding isnt too hard, just requires patience and doing everything correctly.

A brand new 1405 is like, $300 on Summit and similar though, warrantied and all, plus $150 if you need the intake. Make sure to get something like the edelbrock choke cable too, it's all metal on the handle and mounting, most others have plastic prone to breaking.

I'm the type to go new and then fuck with it down the line if I have to, mine only needed slight adjustment to get the idle on the truck down and a little leaning on the mixture screws to stop a bog going from cruise to wot at low speeds.
>>
>>16174213
>>16174254
rebuilding a carb isn't complicated at all. as long as you're sticking to stock jets the only thing you'll need to know is the correct float level setting. Most rebuild kits come with a ruler and instructions though.
>>
>>16174435
I have rebuilt a few carbs, I used to work rebuilding small engines.

>>
>>16174455
if you can find an old one in need of a rebuild then I'd say go for it. Not sure about you but I can find used carbs all day long on craigslist for $20-50 a piece. Couple that with a $20 rebuild kit and you've got yourself essentially a brand new carb. As long as you don't mind it looking a little old.
>>
>>16174468
yeah I don't mind it, but fug new carbs are dang pretty.

I need to do more looking though.

On a related note, I sold a holley 4412 I found in my grandfather's garage for 100$ on ebay.

dope.
>>
>>16174455
One hour or two of your time and a rebuild kit is always worth it, compared to buying new. The only thing to really worry about on old carbs is if the throttle bushings are shot, or not
>>
>>16174475
how can you tell?
>>
>>16174480
You really can only tell when the carb is on the engine and running. If you have to crank the Idle mixture screws way the hell out to get the engine running smoothly and you know there's no vacuum leak, then the throttle bushings are toast.
Alternatively, if the throttle shaft has a bit of gas leaking out of it on both sides, then the bushings are usually toast

Was implying mine, every bushing is shot, shocks are done, etc. Planning to do a 4/6 drop, new ball joints, bushings, shocks, tie rods, shocks and leafs, bigger front sway bar as well as adding a rear sway bar, it'll still haul enough shit in the bed for what I tend to use it for, and if I ever need more I can borrow my dads 3/4 ton which is the family work horse.

Where do you yankees find "cheap" Ls engines?
Cheapest lsx I found was like 19000$
19k is not cheap and for that much money I can get serious hp out of turbo engine, question is are they really cheaper way to get reliable hp? To me they don't seem to be worth it.
>>
>>16175670
Depends, by ls do mean an actual ls1 or ls6 or by ls do mean just ls family? Because I can get any old lc9 out of a rekt pickup for like 250$ at a junkyard

16000, seems a bit absurd when you can get a plug and play ls3 for like 7k out the door with all the computers and fuel injection necessary. You could find donor ls engines for like 2 to 4k on Craigslist though
>>
>>16175670
Junkyards, ebay, local pick-n-pulls. Any yard that doesn't offer a 30-day or so return on any non-running or internally damaged engines/bad ecu's are shit and not worth buying from.

If you're really trying to stay cheap, get one of the 4.8/5.3 iron block or something, aluminum runs cost up as yards have caught onto the lsmeme

What I'm currently working on; 1984 15th anniversary Firebird T/A. Bought it off a friend of my old man's for $1500; finally paid it off a few weeks ago after about 7 months of payments.

>The good

Car is mostly intact; has some cosmetic issues from sitting for 5 years or so. Before that, was DD'd for a while, but mostly just around town, nothing major. In the 16 years the guy owned it, he put probably about 8-9k miles on it.

>The bad
Have to go through 2 previous owners and their half assed wiring, quick fixes, etc etc; that and the fact that I have ANOTHER car made of unobtanium parts. First kid that bought it off the first owner took all the 80s GM smog shit off and bypassed a lot of the electronic shit. P.O I bought it from took the original H.O 305 it came with out of it and put a '79 C10 350 into it and piggybacked a lot of what was left of the emission shit onto it.

End result was a car that needs a lot of re-wiring, random emission shit that goes nowhere deleted, and a general overhaul of the suspension, brakes, etc etc.

Good news is that the car runs, albeit shittily. PO swears up and down it's a bad cam / lifters, but I'm not 100% sold on that notion.

>muh turd gen feels.
>>
>>16179784
Depends how good of shape it's really in. No one really flips Sunfires. They are a dime a dozen kinda car.
I paid $1400 for mine and only got $1500 when I sold it, after I put new pads in the front and machined the rotors, fixed cruise control, put in a new muffler, fixed the HVAC controls and put in new plugs and wires.

And I only got that much for it cause they car was in incredible shape inside and out. Barely even leaked a drop of oil with 236 000 Km on it even
>>
My 280ZX still isn't firing up after I flushed the old gas out. I'm thinking that I need to get a logic tester and see if the injectors are getting pulse. Either they are getting pulse and the bad gas gummed the injectors up or they aren't getting pulse because some electrical fault is preventing them from firing as part of a safety feature

Any thoughts guys?

Exactly what I did, amigo. I got lucky with the floors; they were still pristene from the factory with only a few spots of surface rust. Treated everything with Ospho, and then layed down some thick bedliner.

Put about an inch or two of sound deadener and insulation down to keep the temps cool, then put the carpet back inside. Not too bad on cost either to re-insulate.

It's a decal on an aluminum piece; I have a few spares around here because it was cheaper to buy 12 on eBay than one at a junk yard.

I stockpile a lot of parts due to the rarity of these cars.

I live a bit North of Houston; the closest thing we get to winter is a few 40° days. I love it. On the 60° days, I can drive around in my Excalibur with the top down and heater on for maximum comfort.

The South is the best place for a classic car enthusiast to live, as you can drive one year-round.

Once I get the DeLorean straightened out, I'm going to have the interior redone on my Imperial, then pull the engine, rebuild it, have the car repainted, and reinstall the engine.
