Time for a new thread.

25 years and older technically counts as a classic, but it needs more than just age, to be considered a classic.

My dad is like this

It has a functional drivetrain and almost no body rot, it's worth more than 2 grand these days.

I weep for current car design when I see something like this. The 80's were clearly the pinnacle of American car design.
>>
>>16128087
68 Charger, it didn't run when I got it, but did turn over. Anyway, after replacing part after part and still getting nothing, I pull the valve covers and rocker arms off to find ALL the rods bent on one side. Also a piece of the head was cracked so had to fix that too. Figured that'd be the final fix and it didn't change anything. That's when it got pushed in the back of the garage and replaced by something I could actually drive and enjoy.

It needs an engine replacement which is pretty clear now but 440s cost an absolute fuckton. It'd be stupid of me not to replace it with what's in it already

You can legally import most things here as well, but THE RUNNING COSTS. I'm looking for a "new" car myself these days and I might be going for something a little older but not terribly old and with an LPG tank. Regular is some $5.80 after taxes and LPG is the equivalent of $2.55.

I'll share, but you have to come get one. Currently have a stock 440 minus intake and rocker assembly, a complete 500 with ported iron heads, and a 528 that should be done by January.

Guy with the fucked up trans am dash lights here again. I think I found the issue and I'm also thinking I'm half retarded. I didn't realize that there is a 4 amp fuse for just the dash lights. Also while extracting the fuse the cap fell off and some white powder fell on my face and in my mouth, hopefully it's non toxic but I'll find out when I get back from the parts store because I never thought to buy 4 amp fuses. Also again thanks for the advice because I fucking hate anything to do with wiring or electricity.

Yeah just start reading internet pages

Find a classic car you may be able to easily obtain, find the forums (every car will have a forum for it) and just start reading articles and pages about various things.

Or buy a classic car, understand what problems its having and just start reading up on that general subject.

It's a generic answer i know but i don't really know how else to answer it

Other than that the rest is cosmetic such as new seats to replace my jegs plastic racing ones, a new paint job, and I'd love to get the extra dome lights ( the ones by your feet) working, also the whole car has a weird barley noticeable lean to the left that I'd like to get straightened out. Nice. Yeah, 440s are a dime a dozen around here. ST Louis North and South (Chrysler Fenton plant ) is maybe 45 minutes away from my home. Lots of trucks for lots of years as well as many passenger cars passed through her gates.
>>
>>16131826
Here in PA there ain't even a junkyard to be had.
I guess an old Dodge utility vehicle would be the best place to find a V8 but im trying to find a non Magnum block 2bh Fram
>>
>>16131816
Nah. Look for old Dodge motorhomes, up through the 70s. Car production of the 440 ended in 1973 and the 400 took over from there. Full size motorhomes still had the mammoth option thoygh you will be dealing with cast internals and maybe 8.2 to 8.5:1 compression and an anemic cam. Good heads, a 4 barrel, headers, and a moderate cam can, has, and will net you 150 horses as you will be deleting the emissions at the same time and going from a lowly 2bbl to a 4bbl. You can make great street power from a 440 but know that the strokers are not cheap to build in the slightest. My 528 stroker buildup including machining is cresting the 9k mark this time. Man do the chevy and ford guys have it easy....
>>
>>16131851
I'm not looking specifically for a 440, i have an A body so 360 would be ideal. if i could get a 440 easier though i wouldn't deny it.
but dat mileage
>>
>>16131843
There is no such thing as a magnum block. Early castings have round cooling ports and no side ribbing. They also feature thinner motor mount ears that are prone to breaking. I've had great luck with 75 to 78 blocks and my 528 is a 78 block. The cooling ports are larger, you can take them to .060 over all day long, and the block castings are slightly lighter than their earlier counterparts.

Anyone who says their HP block is better is lying. It only indicated a hotter cam, six pack rods, and possibly a true dual exhaust or 4/6bbl carbs. The block itself is no different.

The biggest differences you will run into will be your water pump housing and all the front ancillary brackets that stuff like the alternator and PS pump mount to. The design changed in the early 70s to be a bit different so keep that in mind. Mine I fully converted to the late style as parts are more readily available.
>>
>>16131859
It isn't about miles per gallon friend. It's about smiles per mile.

Good luck with a 340, they have shot up very high in recent years. A good alternative would be a 318 or 360 as both are solid, reliable options for an A Body. Is your A body a /6 car at the moment or a factory V8?
>>
>>16131875
>There is no such thing as a magnum block
I'm talking about that gay new shit chrysler is doing, they have shorter deck heights than traditional blocks.
>>
>>16131882
>Good luck with a 340
I know, they're unobtainium, that's why i'll just stroke a 360
>>
>>16131882
>Is your A body a /6 car at the moment
Oh and yes, tranny will have to go because it's a 904 and fuck kickdown tuning.
I'll go A833 but this whole thing won't be done until later in the year when i can afford all the shit you need for an A833 swap.
>>
>>16131893
That's just the difference between the A and LA series VS the B and RB. The B is the low deck Big block, the RB being the raised deck block. The LA was the updated A series and is the 318 and 360 in both non and magnum form (magnums have a better fuel system, cam, exhaust, and rotating assembly as well as higher compression. It can still bolt up to a 904 Automatic just fine and that was the standard 3 speed small block trans. Just give it a shift kit, a good 2200 to 2400 stall converter, and some 3.55 gears and you are golden. I'd go with an 8.75 rear end because if yours is the leaning tower of power, you got the 8.25.
>>
>>16131905
Nothing wrong with the 904 it will hold up to a stock application. The issue is you will need to swap your K member up front with a V8 k member. You can find them but A body prices are getting disgusting. What exactly do you have? If it is a Dart or Scamp, I guarantee you have 3 on the column automatic, bench seats, 14 inch wheels, and an 8.25 out the gate.
>>
>>16131913
the cost to fix my tower of power will probably be more than a junkyard 360 2bh.
Everything is fucked up, the carb is rotten, the throttle assembly doesn't actually work and the previous owner pretty much unbolted the generical kickdown linkage so the tranny could be toast, i dunno, it needs a new everything related to starting it.

If i can find a beat to shit ram or van at a junkyard i may just be able to get a working car

Yeah I lucked out. Traded a gun for it 2 years ago. 3 engines, 1 trans, and I think I'm on rear end number 4 now. The original 440 was tired but it is rebuilt now and wrapped, the 512 I had chucked a rod due to a bearing failure, trans 1 popped after about 50 passes behind the 512 but it was bone stock. Mopar 8.75 rears really plummet in reliability with 550 plus being thrown at them. The 512 was making 630 at the crank with a quite hot cam at 10.55:1 compression.

>>
>>16132057
Well the heater core was bypassed and the line was looped back into itself before I got it. I bought a replacement, but I bought the wrong one. I will be fixing it eventually.
>>
>>16132114
It will on premium. I run a 750 Weber jetted up with larger metering rods. Local gas station carries 93 premium, but I did get some light pinging near the very top. On occasion, I'd go to our wonderful local airport and a friend would give me a tail number and fill me with 110 low lead AvBlu. Then the timing can really be played with to make power, but Johnny polar bear doesn't really like it. There is also a strip within 20 minutes of my house and they have all the new fancy race gas at 7 to 11 a gallon. It's ludicrous.

This 528 is at 10.13:1 comp, but has a boost grind cam. I'm making about 600 peak power, but it stretched my torque curve a bit flatter and I ended up with a bit better low end. I also am working out a 2 stage Cheater setup at 100/250, but I will have to rebuild my older 850 because it starts to lean out on the larger shot and if I jet it up, I fear washing out the cylinders when I off-on-off the throttle in corners when not using the bottle. I could delay my secondaries and maybe toy with the metering rods more, but just using an 850 will solve that issue itself.

With good aluminum heads, you can do 10:1 to 10.5:1 on pump premium. Just call Crane or Comp and they will help you choose a cam for your application.

I will probably catch flak for this but 440source. They made crap for one 3 month period and became regarded as a shit company but I've yet to have to machine or balance any of the rotating assemblies I have ordered (thought I do have my machine shop check the total balance and harmonic limits to get a roundabout mechanical rev limit).

>>16131428 has it about right. I'd suggest a classic with an inline 6. Tons of room under the hood, not too much going on either. The first engine I rebuilt was a ford 250 i6. Not even knowing what i was doing and just slapping everything together my rebuild lasted about a year before i spun a bearing. I've learned that these style of engines are extremely forgiving on pretty much anything you do to them. Flooring it at every stoplight and buzzing the thing up to 4-5k daily still took a year to kill the damn thing. There's a reason the old inline sixes and slant sixes had a reputation for being nigh indestructible.

I DDed mine for that year, yeah. all the old transmissions had only 3 speeds, so it all depends on the rear gear ratio as to what your RPMs are at on the highway.

My maverick did about 3k at 65, i suspect the higher gear was for better acceleration with the smaller engine.

My galaxie does about 2k at 65. It definitely has the lower highway gears in it because muh v8.

Get a carb rebuild kit and a paint can of carb clean. It literally takes like an hour or Two. Do you know if your fuel pump is working? Crack the line after the pump or take the line off the carb and put a cup or something in front of it and bump the starter. See if it works
>>
>>16136273
Sounds like it didn't get fuel. Check to see if your filter is clogged and try again. As for the shaking, it could be that your ignition timing is off a bit. When was the last time it ran?

Trans am dude here again, I'm having some issues with my holley carb. Basically I believe that the needle valve is getting stuck and causing the thing to flood since it only does this at low speeds or idle. It does this completely randomly too and at the worst times. When I was driving home today I slowed down to turn into my driveway and she died so I had to coast her into the driveway and walk the 1/4 mile up to my house to get tools to pull the needle out. When I got back I took the air cleaner off and tried to crank her over, fired right up until I put the air filter on and it died with some light smoke coming out of the carb. I popped open the view port on the main bowl and fuel was pouring out so I pulled the needle and re adjusted it. The fuel filter is clean so I dunno what's causing it to stick.

disconnect the fuel line at the tank and also at the pump then run some compressed air through it. Just make sure you have a bottle or whatever to catch the gas/dirt that comes out.

You might also want to check out the fuel sending unit. It's in the tank and a pain in the ass to get to but that could also be a problem. Sometimes they develop a pinhole leak at the top, which will just cause the fuel pump to suck air instead of gas. The filter inside the tank could also be clogged.

The fuel pump could also be garbage as you said. If fuel isn't flowing to the carb then it's most likely not the carb. It definitely won't hurt to give it a good cleaning though. you could disconnect the fuel line from the pump and while having someone crank the engine over hold your finger over the inlet on the pump. You'll be able to feel the vacuum of the pump working to draw fuel in.

and this may sound far fetched, but have you tried cranking with the gas cap off? Older cars used vented tanks, and a common mistake people do is put a non vented gas cap on a vented fuel system. a vacuum starts building up in the tank, eventually reaching a point where the fuel pump cannot overcome the vacuum anymore and no fuel gets to the engine.
>>
>>16143515
Thanks for that, great write up
>>
>>16143515
>then run some compressed air through it
you mean the fuel line or the carb? it's getting fuel all the way up to the filter which is sitting right next to the carb i mean.

Now that you said something, the gas cap looks like some bullshit after thought.

I'd suggest one of those filters you can take apart and clean. Mr. gasket makes em and for $10 something they'll last you basically forever.

Actually tho good luck, and honestly consider getting an electric fuel pump. You can get some that you mount to the fire wall and can use your regular fuel sending unit.

You might want to replace that fuel filter though.

>>
>>16147038
I've never personally worked on q-jets but my understanding is that they only give the engine exactly what it needs. Hence why 750-800cfm q jets work so well on sbc 305's and the like.
>>
>>16147046
I'm going to go with an edelbrock 1403 or 1404 probably. 500-600cfm is all that needs, and it's got manual secondaries and choke
>>
>>16147038
You've been talking about CFM for a while now. The way you're measuring CFM is an average of what the engine is taking in, but engines aren't sucking air literally nonstop, it's going in pulses as each intake valve opens.
The fact is you think you need a 650 CFM when, with the addition of the manifold, you need an 850 CFM.

Especially because you refuse to upgrade to bigger wheels or change your gearing out of those retarded tow ratios.
Anyway I'm telling you now to recalculate what you need before you complain that your motor is choked for gas and you only have 160 on wheels.
>>
>>16147028

>>
>>16147079
You're basing this on the erroneous notion that engines take in air at a fixed, constant rate.

You're link has no effect on me, you won't have the exact same engine as that guy. The time to figure out what carburetor you need is when the engine has everything but a carburetor.

Also you have no place to call anyone dumb if you don't know what a fucking crush washer is.
>>
>>16147089
Here you go.

http://www.hotrod.com/articles/how-big-a-carb-do-you-need/amp/

I followed this, taking in account the need for vacuum. Based solely on the original calculation, optimistically I would need 480 cfm just on the base calculation. Taking in the need for vacuum as well as having idle and the proper ramp up. After calculating for that, with a pretty modified 302 with a 6500 rpm redline. That puts me at 620.69

>Tldr: "no"
>>
>>16147151
You didn't take into account what manifold you're using, that's you're problem. No the "vacuum" doesn't properly explaind what's going on.

tl;dr: figure out CFM after you put a manifold on the engine.

http://www.thirdgen.org/pickacarb/
>>
>>16147159
So that makes more sense, yet even looking at your article out is more in line with what I was saying with a relatively lower rise weiand stealth or performer rpm dual plane (which I'll probably go with the weiand because monies)

"For any 305, 600-650cfm should be plenty. For any healthy 350 CID or larger motor, you shouldn’t run any less than a 750cfm, and perhaps up depending on your particular combo."

Although the 302 flows a but better than the 305, it still maths out.
