Am i a fool for wanting a skyline?
/dat/ discussions seem to go in waves. recently a lot of talk has been had about how skylines attract owners who trash them and that there will be many problems. My uncle has two 34 GTRs but he is well off and has put a lot of money into maintaining them.

I'm interested in a coupe. the 32 gtst, 33 gtst and 34 gtt are fairly affordable also, compared with say an FD.

BLDC and other skyline owners please respond.
>>
>>16020249
Focus ST bruh
>>
>>16020333
FD's are fun and very nimble handling cars, but they're a high maintenance animal and way too thirsty for a daily driver.
R34GTT will do you right, get the later turbo NEO engine and they're quite an easy car to live with that'll do long trips, performance, skids etc or whatever you set it up to do. Parts aren't too horrendous in cost either.

mine was 4 k and I've flogged the piss out of it for the past 2000km with only a service, upgraded fuel pump, boost controller and some re003s. They're flogged, every single one of them. That 'mint' one that's fresh import first owner in Australia? Flogged by some cunt in Japan. but they're awesome fun, cheap power and a huge aftermarket selection. They're fairly easy to work on, so labour doesn't get stupid either. I can answer anything I know of there's something in particular. R33's are probably at their best price point right now and I doubt 34s will drop much more because paul walker memes

33 GTSTs are the best value for money jap thrashmobile that you can get at the moment. No problems with rocker arms like SR20s have and can do amazing skids even in stock form.

I'm biased towards 32s for obvious reasons as they look loads better in my opinion.

G'day lads,

Need some advice, I am finally moving out of home (25yo) due to sick of living at home and too much money in the bank. Should I get 4br house or inner-city 1br unit (same price)?

Based in city for now, Perth, but due to being in bolice could end up anywhere.
>>
>>16020403
No it's an inline 6. Take a picture of your work. Idc as long as it's not completely fucked and full of runs and shit. You can have a crack at my bonnet first if you actually want to
>>

Just wondering if I'll get lonely in a big 4br house by myself. Maybe I'd have to get a cat.
>>
>>16020407
What were you doing with the 33? Every car has the potential to bore you withing a month of ownership. I definitely get how it bored you, especially if you were driving it around as a daily
>>
>>16020403

Any idea what it'd roughly cost to respray a car yourself?

I've got an old GT Forester, mechanically sweet, low k's, but the paint is all kinds of fucked and I really can't justify spending the money most places ask for a re-spray.
>>
>>16020423
4 room house. Rent out bedrooms which will pay for a chunk of the mortgage
>>
>>16020423
Why don't you sharehouse? Much cheaper than renting a place for yourself.
>>
>>16020417
My runs are minimal senpai. Only get small ones in clear when i get a bit too liberal, runs in clear can also be dealt with sanded, basecoat however...
Be warned that with an old car if you spray one panel it will be bright and stand out a bit.
Getting much better, fuck its expensive.
Will post pics as I'm going for a drive soon.

>Whats it like sharing with strangers?

Depends on the strangers, it can be awesome, it can also be the worst thing imaginable.

Generally better to do it with friends if you can.

If you want hassle free, but boring, asian students.

If you want hassles out the ass, poor hygiene and to magically find one room now has 5 people in it, paki's/indians.

Everything else is a crap shoot.

>>16020426
I've been quoted by some places at 2-3k for a full respray for a 3-door hatch or coupe. A forester it could easily be in excess of 5k.

-High output compressor= $300-1000
-Various guns and tips could be up to $100-200
-Hoses($20-50), filters ($5-10) adaptors ($10-20)
-a respirator, I don't think I will paint anything without one, a dust mask is shit. Getting high on fumes and damage to your lungs when sanding is gross (can be upwards of $50)
-Paint for a full car could be a few hundred, depending how much, where you get it, what brands and 1 part vs 2 part.
-electric sanding or sand blasting to get paint off.
-Many rolls of masking tape, many old sheets or tarps and newspapers. Can always get a shitty old car port used or new, bolster it somewhat so you're not getting wind or anything in park the car in there so you can paint.

A lot of this stuff you can get used (compressor, guns, hoses, tips and respirator) could save a lot of money there. Some of this stuff you might have, If you're buying it the compressor, hoses and respirator will have many uses other than painting.

Also depends on how fucked the paint is, you might be able to get away with taking off the clear coat but I think that isn't the case and subaru mixed basecoat with clear so you would then have to get it to primer or bare metal.

Can cost anywhere from 2-5k but be prepared to spend 2k at least depending on all these things.
If you do it yourself, but there are many many many many hours of prepwork involved in painting panel let alone a whole car.

Awesome, that seems pretty reasonable.

Yeah most of the quotes i've had have been well north of $6k mark, highest was over 10, but I could justify the 2-3k and do it myself.

Compressor I have, respirator I have, guns and hoses i'd need, paint is relatively straight forward, would probably want some decent sanding equipment, tarps etc I can handle, already have a decent dust extractor and work space that I could keep hosed down as well to reduce dust so yeah, sweet.

I also have a bunch of old VW panels I could practice on.

>subaru mixed basecoat with clear so you would then have to get it to primer or bare metal

Oh it'd absolutely have to go back to bare metal, primer etc, I couldn't say for sure what Subaru do, but the clear coat is absolutely fucked across most of the car (and where it isn't it's breaking down at a rapid pace) and the colour underneath seems to be ridiculously thin, as in areas without clear coat are literally being taken off by heavy rain etc

I might start pricing everything out in detail and call it my summer project.

Thanks for that.

Subaru mostly have thin paint too,you might be doing the car a favour.
I've been told by many people to avoid single part clearcoat as it doesnt have the hardener which is in 2 part that lends to long life, however I've painted panels before with single part acrylic and from what i've seen they hold up as long as lay down heaps of coats which increase in thickness(starting as a spray, wait 5 mins then building up wetter passes with each coat)

>>16020515

Oh I fully expect to fuck it up, i'll probably do half a dozen passes/sand backs on the bonnet alone before I start anything else.

I'm honestly not too worried about the finished product, it's just that the paint is literally breaking down so badly/fast that shit is going to start rusting soon and I figure a respray...even if the quality isn't the best would be better than vinyl wrapping it etc long term.

practice on panels until youre confident enough imo.

take it slow, its easy to want to just saturate the area on the first part but you must build up gradually. finesse is needed for basecoat and clear. prep work and primer is most time consuming but easiest and hardest to fuck up.

If you have a garage use one, just cover walls and floor with old sheets, tarps and paper to avoid overspray.
don't paint outside because of wind, bugs, leaves, dust and birds shitting.
You can always nigrig a booth which can allow you to paint outside.

for either one have a fan blowing in through a flyscreen and another blowing out through one. be wary of painting in the early evening and night because of bugs.

I'm honestly not sure there's anything you can do to really save it once that clear coat decides it's had enough, mine went from sort of being ok aside from the roof, to full on dandruff mode where 2-5cm of clear coat is coming off the doors each week, bonnet is almost completely gone etc and if you think about polishing or waxing it just strips it even faster.

Unless you really love the car (which in my case I do), i'd consider selling it before it goes to complete shit and destroys the resale value.

My mate offered me his 1985 Nissan EXA turbo for 700 bucks. Needs a pit pass but it's been done before recently so it'll pass no worries. It's actually damn tidy for the age and having 260 something kilometers on the clock.

He bought it with the intention of fixing it up and getting it back on the road, but went from loving it to not caring in two seconds flat and now wants to buy an R31, the faggot

Is this a good decision? Are these cars lame turds?
>>
>>16020658

I don't know how people buy/drive these shit old cars, I would be mortified to be seen driving one with people thinking I'm poor etc.

My OLDEST car was my current one, a 2012 VF SV6.

Even that feels ridiculous, buying used, but its a second car so no complaints. Otherwise I buy new all the time.
>>
>>16020666
that's because you're fucking insecure
>>
>>16020668

Why do you say that?
>>
>>16020668

Also, when I see someone driving an old car like that, my first thought is that they must have shit credit and can't get a car loan. Call me an asshole but its what i think.
>>
>>16020668
Fucking this.

Nobody cares what you drive, no matter how much you convince yourself otherwise.

>inb4 I work at some high end workplace and it matters because people think less of you

No. Stop being so insecure and you'll realise that it litterally doesn't matter.
>>
>>16020658
>1985 Nissan EXA turbo

Skip it mate, they're an endless pit of fixing shit and really not very fast.
Plus its a bumdragger so if you're going to the hassle of having a screamy little T-I4 that always need something fixed, it may as well be RWD.
>>
>>16020608
fuck this makes me sad
Do you mean waxing makes it worse after its started stripping though? The only part that's going dandruff-y is the roof so far. But it gets worse every week so, so I think the rest of the paint might be not far off
>>
>>16020675
>>16020668
Legit, what difference does it make even if they do think you're poor?
It's funny cause in reality you'd probably be a lot poorer if you spent a lot of money on new, expensive cars
>>
>>16020676
What's so unreliable about them? I'm not buying it to be fast (already have a skyline), I just want a zippy little shitbox to have a bit of fun in. I recently had an AE82 twincam and I had a ton of fun in it and this would be a perfect replacement for it with the benefit of being in way, way better condition

>>16020689
Whenever I drive a shitbox I quite enjoy knowing some insecure people judge by on my car when I have a much nicer car at home - even though it's only a 7 thousand dollar skyline. the point is that no matter what people assume, they actually don't know shit
>>
>>16020673
i've seen troller pushers at woolies with mint performance cars
nuff said
>>
>>16020705
Mostly engine-electricals
They're pretty old so most everything has a bit of rot in it or needs freshening up. Which if you're going to be dumping that much blood, sweat and cash into something- I'm sure there's a poor old S13-14 out there which needs love and restoration.
Aside from that the torque steer is like watching a dog on lino
>>
So afaik on most ohc engines the cams actuate the valves directly by pressing on the cam bucket. Now in the SR20 the cam actuates a rocker arm which moves the valves right? Is this worse/less reliable? What other engines use rocker arms?
>>
>>16020724
Except I'm not going to get an S13 for under four grand, and it would be a garbage one at that. This car is 700 bucks, not really comparable.

I can deal with oldness, replacement parts are cheap and it runs well enough as is.
>>
>>16020724
I'm also only going to be spending about 500 bucks on it including rego. It doesn't really need anything
>>
>>16020731
>Is this worse/less reliable?

In some ways its a compromise.
>You only need one cam lobe
>Reduced valve train mass
>You can adjust the ratio of cam-valve lift easily
>Single lifter instead of 2

Which is why as an engine they where cheaper than the mechanically-more complicated and expensive setup that the CA18 had, which priced itself out of production so to speak.
Now, people will make the meme herp-derping about rockers getting snapped, but you could also look at it as, well- least it wasn't the valve! Plus, if you're making a high performance SR20 then you can get a set of Tomei rocker-locker stoppers for $200, fit them up and not worry about shit cutting loose when trying to rev it to 8000rpm (which its not meant to, but people try to do it anyway!)

Toyota, Honda, Ferrari and a couple of others have had them as well. Porsche also has a fairly advanced system for theirs which is used to adjust duration-lift on the fly.
>>
>>16020738
Up to you mate, you think its worth it for warts and all, I've not physically seen the car. Just known a couple of fellas that where 'mostly disappointed' with theirs :)

Fumes can send you loopy too. It's no fun at all getting high on them, use a full face respirator and wear safety glasses.

yeah pretty much. its more so in a makeshift booth you would apply it.
fan sucking air from outside and one blowing air outside creates a positive pressure gradient(???).
paint/dust wont linger around. paint clouds can really screw up visibility when painting.
you can use this setup when sanding too.

Also to avoid getting paint and dust all over your house you can peg a bunch of old wet towels around the fan which is sucking air from inside the garage/booth and blowing all the paint dust out.

>>

also i really reccomend using a flyscreen and trying to make whatever booth you construct as secure as possible.
Last thing you want is bugs landing in your paint.

I learnt that the hard way. thankfully you can sand imperfections out of clearcoat and respray if needed, not the same for base which can be the trickiest step.

I mean any kind of friction on the surface only speeds up the process of it all going to shit once it's started chemically breaking down....and in my case the fucking rain is enough to take the base colour coat off once the clear is gone.

Passed my VORT test yesterday with a 94.

Brushed the curb when pulling in to do the Handbrake Hillstart (-2 points), managed to do a reverse parallel, some old bastard pulled out of a park space without indicating ahead of me as I was turning around a corner but we didn't crash because they did so slowly (-2 Points) and only one time did I brake before indicating (-2 points but hey, I felt it better as I wanted to slow down early).

Mum already asked me to run errand boy within three hours of getting my license, she wanted a Frypan and a Grater from home taken to work.

Tradies tend to use Hiluxs and Hiaces anyway, lifted trucks are a thing if you're a 4wd'er but aside from that you'll probably be seeing falcadores around for some time.

Nah, I know someone with a CA 180, has sunk plenty of cash into it over the years and it runs really nice. They just need to be maintained well. I doubt he would've spent the money on it if it was a shit car that didn't perform at least reasonably

They're a fine car for an SR20 swap later! :)
Nah, they're not too bad but you'll hit a wall with the CA18 if you try to make it fast (and I have) and they can end up quite quick- but for the same money or less + the SR20 you can make quite an engine that has further potential down the track.
As a daily for a P-plarter it'll be pretty swank and do skids, you'll also get fingered by the cops for anything they can think of and probably be spending a few bucks to tidy up old shit in the engine that's worn out.

Have a mechanic go over it EXTENSIVELY before you buy it
I kid you not, it will have problems- bushings, wheel bearings, fucked up electricals and probably a driveline that's been beaten on like a rented mule, that's before anything going tits up in the engine. Because lets face it, its older than you are.

You can't do shit.

Councils are legally covered for shit like this, there's been tons of cases like that tried in court, councils have always won because you can't prove that they were aware of the problem prior to the incident.

With that said, if you could theoretically establish a paper and phone trail of them being notified of the problem, them taking no action and it being on record prior to some sort of horrific incident caused by said potholes......you *might* have a shot.

The 180 is going to have more parts available and greater aftermarket support. It's also going to have more 16-22 year old males offering you anal sex and telling you to lower it more. It's probably a good investment choice too if you can keep it tidy
