But your seals aren't leaking, anon.

ANd if they were, you would use a seal-mate to clean them

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wlzfoVroSY
>>
>>16011687
just use a PCV pipe and a mallet instead of a fork seal driver
>>
>>16011687
I suggest you check out some vidyas (and your service manual) and tackle it yourself. That XL is very easy to do. You can seat new seals with a piece of PVC pipe and a hammer. You can remove old seals in a variety of ways. I usually hook them with a cotter key extractor. You can, if necessary, remove the fork damper bolt then slide the fork slide off the tube but that's very rarely needed.

Basically, support bike or remove battery and fuel tank to lay on side.
Remove front wheel. Loosen upper and lower pinch bolts and slide out ONE fork leg. Replace seal and reinstall fork leg, then do the other side. Install front wheel and check for alignment. I won't write a book here because the net and your manual have plenty of info.

It's a fine noob job and very low risk. Even if all your fork fluid magically vanished your suspension will still work, and there probably isn't shit left for fluid in a bike that old anyway.

If you can turn a wrench at all, go for it. Study, ask questions IN A HONDA FORUM and have at it. You really need to engage with real bike forums. You'll be delighted at what they offer.

It's coming apart pretty easy. Can't see why it might be leaking water externally from the head gasket, except that they used (or reused) a 3 layer gasket with no coating, and just slathered copper gasket sealer all over. Some of the cam journals look a little rough, and the sides of every bucket are scuffed instead of shiny. This whole thing might be shit idk

>Whats wrong with this shiposter hell.

You just answered your own question.

I post here to help because evidently some riders exist unreached by other resources. You cunts are the oldfucks of the future so in my way, I pass the torch. In fewer years than you can comprehend you will turn into the Boomers you loathe.

Your enflabulent guntfolds will drap o'er your instrument clusters, your hemhorroid clusters will be larger than your instrument clusters, and then you will be passing the proverbial mechanical torch to whatever passes for human at the time.

You will see it all. You'll see fadfags cutting up old MVs and KTMs to chop them. You'll see the few pristine examples of machines you loved sold for mad cash to people to pussified to ride them. You'll see the yunghawt pussy you now fap to turn into bloated, sloppy aging fleshbags.

You will grow old.

Do it right and you'll still ride and wrench while your peers fade away, so spin wrenches and get gud.
>>
>>16011872
>bloated, sloppy aging fleshbags.

But seriously, how tarded can one be to not even think about doing a google search on their bike to find dedicated forums?

Those types are too far gone, lost to the depths of dank memes. No quantity of help can save a memester.

It isn't hard. The biggest issue with forks is that they usually require a boat load of special tools and some experience to boot when it comes to servicing them. It's a pain in the fucking ass to do anything on forks.

If I were you, I would just pay a local mechanic shop for a full fork service. You should upgrade the springs in your forks with SonicSprings and also have them throw in some new fork oil. For them to install the springs, oil, and seals, the total cost is going to be around $100-$120. Of course you'll have to buy the springs and oil separately yourself which will be another $100.

Well worth it though.
>>
>>16012727

Correct, though for the first time + noobery I'd add an hour or two.

BTW I suggest loosening the fork tube caps while the tubes are still firmly held in the triple clamps. You can spin them out using your palm later. Spring pressure isn't insane on those old Hondas so you don't need a compression tool.

>I suggest loosening the fork tube caps while the tubes are still firmly held in the triple clamps.
Remember to loosen the top triple clamp though. Otherwise the clamp pressure will hold the fork cap in too tight, so loosen the top clamp and leave the bottom on so it will hold the fork tube still while you break the cap free. I remember when I did the forks on one of my bikes (had USD forks if that makes any difference) and I fought to get the fork caps off with an impact wrench because they were seized in the forks. I damaged the threads too, but when putting them back together i realized they weren't really seized but the clamp pressure was holding it in tight.

If you need a better estimate for damage than their insurance adjuster offers you can sometimes counter with a dealer or independent shop appraisal. That can nudge a "repairable" estimate into an insurance total.

XLs are such pretty bikes

>get bike back
>really excited
>runs well all the way home
>start teaching my gf how to ride on it
>towards the end we go to put it away, all the sudden is blowing black smoke when reved and doesn't want to idle
>kills
>won't start again
>put away for the day
>now today, go to start it to see if it's still doing it/diagnoseable
>kick the shit out of it
>reliably fires but wont start and keep going
>think my bike is already fucked
>start going up to the house
>have one more idea
>turn tank on reserve
>starts first kick and runs normally, a little white smoke, but normal for start up

No idea what all the black smoke was about, theres gas treatment stuff in it right now maybe it was trying to suck some of that? oh well if it works, it works.

See the thing is, the bike was $4000 *new*. That was 7000 miles ago. I doubt it's worth more than 2 grand now. Minimum, all of the controls on the right clipon (and the right clipon) are gone, fairing is probably gone, and it ran into a curb (as far as I know). I'd wager some fork damage.

It hurts to say it though, because I fucking love that bike.

if you are in the US take your permit test first, then when you take the MSF that counts as taking the DMV test.
I would recommend getting your helmet and gloves before doing training, but you can wait with the other gear until afterwards. I ended up buying a mesh jacket before my course because it was so fucking hot out that day, but the jacket isn't necessary for the training.

have you ridden any motorcycle before?

physics professor and any physics resource I find.
http://www.understandingforce.com/frictionforce.html
Friction is the product of the normal force between 2 objects and the coefficient of friction of those surfaces. Notice there is no variable or factor for the contact area.
>>
>>16013454
tires dont act solely by friction, also by intermolecular attraction and other forces. to distill it into one simple thought, its sticky enough that you must shear the surface layer of rubber off the tire to lose grip. so your 'grip' is actually the shear strength of the rubber, which is of course measured by the contact area. thats why you leave black marks behind, whereas smearing isnt a factor in a standard friction equation.
>>
>>16013494
that is leaving out the other factors like the elasticity and shear strength of the rubber, which contribute greatly to the overall grip.
>theory=/= reality

I splurged and got a Shoei Qwest, my buddy got an HJC and he has been happy with it. I would recommend taking a trip to any local bike shops that have helmets available and trying on pretty much everything in the store. That way you can figure out what you like about different helmet fits, like Icon are comfy once they are on, but I have a super hard time getting them over my ears.
Gloves are a bit of a toss up, I got a set of Alpinestars SMX-3 mesh gloves and they have been nice. Try on a bunch of different thing and see if any of the different makers fits better. Nothing says you have to buy anything at the store.

Make sure you get your permit before signing up for the MSF course.

You should buy a brand new Prius and leave motorcycles to cool people.
>>
>>16013613
My MSF required that I have the permit before riding, the permit is just a written test, no riding involved. The MSF course is made specifically for people who have no idea how to ride a motorcycle, or even a manual transmission. The MSF course replaces the DMV license test, you just take the piece of paper they give you to the DMV and they give you your license.

I wear earplugs if I am going to be riding for more than 15 minutes at a time, it will depend on your bike, your helmet, and your threshold for noise.

1K should be more than enough to get yourself a full set of gear, depending on brand. I spent way too much on my pants, but came in right around that mark for my first set. What kind of gear do you want, are you looking more sport focused, or more leather?

For the sake of the MSF don't worry about knee pads, the work boots will be fine. Afterwards maybe look into getting a set of overpants or something of that nature, I went overboard and got a set of Drake Air pants. Riding boots are nice to have, I didn't like how the work boots fit under the gear shifter on my bike.
I don't know what your weather is looking like right now, it's getting cold here in Minnesota, but I've been happy with my Alpinestars Viper Air mesh jacket, great for warm weather. Trying on the gear and seeing how it feels is huge, check your local shops. Once you know the fit you like you can cruise for deals and closeouts.

Here's all you need to read to get ready for the written part of both DMV and MSF. Also youtube dmv motorcycle written test and you can thank me later.

Like you I'm a new rider and I would suggest taking the course over a dealership sponsored program as they will likely have a higher incentive of letting you pass the course. Also youtube some beginner stuff like turning, counter steering , friction zone. Would also suggest to get an engine guard for your first bike as I've already dropped my bike more times than I can count when make a turn from a complete stop and the guard have saved it from getting any scratch.

Location? Size? Budget?

Yamaha SR400/SR500 is an extremely solid basis for building whatever the fuck you want.

Simple, reliable, kickstart only, they've been making them since the 70's and still make the SR400 today so parts are plentiful, aftermarket parts even more so and you'll have no trouble picking one up regardless of your price range.

Kawasaki W400/W650/W800 are again a great platform for whatever you want.

400 is a little under powered but a solid bike, W650 is the sweet spot with both kickstart and electric start as well as still being carbureted so it's easy as fuck to work on, extremely high quality everything and ridiculously reliable, W800 is fuel injected and electric start only, but still a pretty sweet bike.

Honda GB/XBR 400/500, these are a bit older then everything else i've listed, but they're extremely reliable and low maintenance, electric and kickstart, hold their value EXTREMELY well, they use the same engine as the Honda NX650 albeit smaller and far less stressed, (not uncommon to see worked NX650 motors shoe horned into GB's though, good times), and are pretty much an off the shelf cafe racer good to go styled on the old Norton Manx's

Now depending on where you live, you *might* be able to find the following....

Honda CL400, modern version of the old scrambler they used used in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (which was actually an old Honda CB350 with CL350 scrambler pipes), it uses a Honda XR400 motor which is among the most bullet proof on the planet, has electric and kick start and is honestly one of the finest bikes i've ever owned, but they're hard as fuck to find in some parts of the world.

Suzuki Grass Tracker, only a 250, shares a lot of parts with the Suzuki TU250X, electric and kickstart, simple as can be and a ton of fun.

Honda FTR, basically Honda's version of the Grass Tracker, small capacity again, electric start only, fun but nothing special.

Tons of options out there.

Not the other anon, but my suggestion would be to buy a different bike, something a bit more upright and comfortable (perhaps a dual sport still) something you can ride the fuck out of at 50km/h, curb hop, lane split and generally hoon around on.

Fuck, buy a Grom.

being a good rider in the city is less about developing a mechanical aptitude for your bike than it is about learning to read traffic and know your place in it. you aren't going to be hitting 65 degree leans or barreling down the road at 180mph on your way to the cornerstore.

your core aptitudes are braking and low-speed maneuvering. practice until you have that down. after that, you need to have an accurate framework in your head of how you are going to interface with the chaos and unpredictability of cars. you need to be able to look at a car and tell if their driver is intoxicated, distracted, if they're looking to make a turn. this is shit that keeps you alive. after you get that all down you can go to the twisties in your spare time and learn how to pretend to be valentino rossi.

Local community college here in Maryland offers a riding course geared toward absolute newbies. Long story short is that successful completion earns you a certificate you can take straight to the MVA (DMV) for your Class M, but they leave you with the advice that the course only lays a solid foundation for riding and that bettering yourself as a rider will take time. Not much different from a learners permit or even first full license - experience still only comes with time and practice.

If its city riding just learn about the idiots around you and how to avoid them. Alot of random fun things to do like fucking around in parking lots and having some fun exploring random shit around the area. Biggest thing is avoid people taking ya out. Its alot of work but learning to be comfortable in the environment you ride is the most important thing haha.

Let's talk about gear

4 season adventure jacket vs a winter jacket and a summer jacket

I'm currently in a place that has a huge variation in temps, (from holy shit i'm in a sauna summers to snow) i'm thinking of getting some winter riding gear now that it's heading into winter, and then getting some really good full mesh summer riding gear as i plan on moving to a tropical area in a year or two anyway

So, cheap winter gear (full protection just not a lot of vents) and then really good summer gear, or really good 4 season gear? I'm thinking winter gear for now and get summer gear later

Looking at tourmaster saber 3 or 4 and get then a back protector for it,
