Im 20 and want to buy my first bike but i dont know any friend or anyone in my family who knows stuff about bikes.. I was already thinking of paying a mechanic or some expert some money to inspect the bike with me.

Honestly man, that is a bad idea. When I first started riding, I didn't know shit about bikes from a mechanical perspective and I also just decided to pay a mechanic to "look it over" and it just ended up being a huge waste of money. Most people in this world are complete retards that put zero heart/effort into anything they do...and the mechanic you come across is probably going to be one of those people. And to boot they'll rip you off

The good thing about motorcycles is there really isn't a lot that can be wrong with them. "Lemons" don't really exist in the pre-owned world. It either runs or it doesn't. The motors and transmissions tend to be fairly bulletproof and considering most bikes are either crashed (totaled) or stolen so if you come across a bike, there is a good chance it's actually in pretty good mechanical shape.
>>
>>15927246
All the mechanic is going to do is listen to the engine, check for visible damage, and check bearings on the parts. You can do all of that yourself in about 2 minutes.
>>

Look into sport nakeds. They're like sportbikes but with higher bars so you're not so hunched over.

>I'm a second-year rider on an R3, started out on a Ninja 250. For any anons unfamiliar with the inside-baseball, the Ninja 250 is ranked somewhere in the 3-5 range of best bike, while the R3 and GS500 duke it out over the 1 and 2 slots. I was always impressed by the performance of the Ninja 250, but it just isn't in the same league as my R3. The drop-off in engine performance when you leave the 250cc class is pretty steep, and it must be even steeper when you look at sub-250cc bikes. I mean this in the least arrogant way possible. The consensus on /dbt/ is that most of the value-added comes from the additional low-end torque. I can't speak to the quality of other bikes, but the dominance of the R3 self-perpetuates pretty easily. Knowing that I'm riding the best performing bike for its class is a comforting thought.

Lol, you are completely delusional. Exactly what "class" is that? You bought a 321cc displacement bike so it goes faster than a 250cc. There is no class. You are competing with yourself. Also, a Ninja 250 sells for $1,500 while your R3 sells for $5,500. Meanwhile it literally makes only 6 more horsepower than the pregen ninjas and costing a fuck ton more. Sorry bro, it's a meme bike. It would be good general value purchase if it didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Other than that though, I do agree with you on every point.

Nigga, how exactly does the R3 compete with the RC390? This is the point I was trying to make in my earlier post. There is no "class" for any of these meme bikes. It's some obscure displacement. How terrible are say XT225 or XT250s on the highway?

I want a more commute friendly bike, so I'm looking at dual sports. I tried riding a DRZ400 but the seat height is out of control, I could barely get one foot down when coming to a stop. So a "full-size" dual-sport bike is kind of out.

Or let me re-phrase this, which of the 200-250cc dual sports sucks the least?

Learn on something that handles, then after you have some riding experience you can make an informed choice. A naked machine is a good choice so you have less very expensive plastic to repair when you drop it. Choppers are fun folk art but terrible to learn on. You like how they look. That is all.

Some FI systems actually do have a manual choke. My GSXR does. It's not an actual choke, more an electronic choke, but the correct term is "fast idle"
>>
Do yourselves all a favor and never buy a bike brand new.

You will never go back to buying used bikes after you buy your first bike brand new.
>>
>>15927712
Not actually a choke because it doesn't enrich the mixture (cold start table in the ECU will). Fast Idle will just UP the IAC count, most EFI vehicles (at least cars do this).

On Toyota and Mazda the "idle flair" on start is actually a good indication of MAP/O2 performance....

I wish they weren't so pricey. I've found hidden things on every used bike I have bought so far, ranging from small fixes to poorfags fixes that JUST barely work and I'd rather fix than fail at high speeds.
>>
>>15927756
did some quick research
so apparently the "fast idle" is to warm up the bike faster if you want.
or even better some guys just use it as cruise control since it works like the throttle, kek.

Does anybody have a recommendation for four-season gear? I'm starting to feel kind of bad/nervous about riding with no armor and I'm looking for some pants and a jacket I can wear with a liner when it's cold but that are light enough not to make me hate my life in the summer.

>You will never go back to buying used bikes after you buy your first bike brand new.

After you put a few miles on "new" it's fucking used like the rest of them.

I've bought new, have plenty of disposable income, and still prefer used machines. It's no contest. I let some other poor bastard beta test and eat the depreciation while I afford more bikes than otherwise.

I enjoy wrenching and prefer no one else work on my rides. I even did my own warranty service using dealer's tools since I knew him and that got it done quicker. I spin wrenches and do wiring at my mentor's shop for fun.

Do it, faggots. The insane amount of money you save and independence and control you gain are worth it. Let the /diy/ flow through you in all aspects of life.

I agree with what you are saying and encourage kids to do their own shit; but only buy bikes from people you know or similar.
Nevertheless
I bought a DT 125 from a complete stranger with 3.500 kms, it lived up to 250.000 without mayor issues. Once in a lifetime chance.

I have a Joe Rocket Atomic 5.0 jacket. Back, elbow, and shoulder pads. removable liner for winter and zip vents for summer. Ridden in below freezing to 90 degrees F and it's been comfortable. You sweat in traffic if its hot, of course, but when you're moving its tolerable. Runs about 150 USD. Only bad thing about it is the zippers are pretty shit

>inb4 winter storage in early october

that being said I'm already thinking about it ahead of time. This will be my first winter as a bike-owner. I'm still not very good at wrenching so I'm thinking only removing battery, cleaning everything, taking care of chain with both cleaner and lube and covering the baiku under a tarp inside a garage that I have not yet arranged for. I won't be touching the spark plugs, that's something I'll learn next season.

I'm going to err on the side of laziness and not drain carbz, instead filling the tank with fuel and fuel stabilizer (if i find some) to the rim.

I just think, why not stretch that same weight (or even less) over a bigger longitude and latitude? KTM are replacing the 200 EXC with a 150 that's gonna come in at 91.5 kg wet, that'd be amazing. Less than the grom and it's big.

No shit, so I check for worn fastener heads, improper sealant and other pecker tracks. Even good mechanics can rarely leave absolutely zero markings on fasteners. (If I got into restoration I'd buy Ampco non-sparking sockets and wrenches to not disturb cad or Parkerized coatings.)

>'m going to err on the side of laziness and not drain carbz, instead filling the tank with fuel and fuel stabilizer (if i find some) to the rim.

A full tank doesn't need fuel stabilizer. The fullness reduces the amount of room atmosphere has to produce condensate in the tank. Fuel stabilizer is useful in coating fuel systems because they've tiny passages which don't like varnish. Use if you like, which means running until carbs are coated and THEN DRAINING THE FUCKING CARBS.

DRAIN THE FUCKING CARBS. Not draining is erring on the side of being a fool. Even if you are rich and have carb cleaning minions that's still another rebuild worth of wear and tear on the carbs.

Alternate option, run the bike once a week. Stagnant fuel shits up not only carbs, but it can get fuel injectors too.

If in a garage, throw a nice breathable old sheet over it. Tarps collect condensation if plastic, and the canvas sort aren't really friendly to pain.

Run, drain, or be sorry and have to outwait the spring backlog at the bike shop where the other mongs who let their bike sit go to get their carbs cleaned.

Nearly everyone here is a racefag and doesn't care about constant overhauls. They care even less about YOUR constant overhauls.

You can trade track performance for reliability but don't mention it here because bantz outweigh information and if you don't own a European supermoto that makes you a cuck.

>I read on a local-language forum that draining carbs is a meme and leads to cracking rubber

Dickhead poster must have wanted more spring carb jobs at his bike shop.

Fuel protects nothing in a carb, not the Viton needle tip, O-rings or CV diaphragms. Stagnant fuel in carbs distills into varnish while entrained moisture causes corrosion, typically seen as the white dusty shit inside long-sitting carbs. Varnish blocks jets and emulsion tube orifices, sometimes more but that's bad enough.

Blocked low speed jets are easily identified by an engine that only runs with the enricher on. (Most bikes no longer have choke plates. Nothing other than choke butterfly system is a "choke".)

When you change a cable, remove the cable from the sheath by cutting one end off and hang it on your wall. Single strands of throttle and clutch cables are useful for quickly opening low-speed jet and emulsion tube holes.

>It's a whole lot different picture when you don't even have a garage.

Different but I've been there, too. G.I. dorm life meant stashing tools and parts in my wall locker to pass inspection. Two dorm-style wall lockers can hold one and a half disassembled Harley Ironheads and a Chevy T350 transmission. When I rented with no garage it was interesting, but at one time self and wife managed three Harleys in progress indoors. First thing I installed at each new residence was a 50A outdoor welding receptacle, I still use my dryer plug male-to-welder outlet female pigtail and 50-foot cord often.

If you don't like carrying shit put wheels on everything you can. Plastic industrial carts are tough, easy to clean, have no sharp edges and don't rust. I get mine at yard sales for like twenty bucks. I use commercial/industrial carts because they'll hold a bike engine and the sidewalls save chasing small parts. They are usually dirty but a can of oven cleaner at the car wash fixes that. Wheeled plastic utility boxes are handy too.

Small parts fit in clear plastic Plano etc tackle boxes from Walmart. I leave one open when skinning out carbs so the parts stay organized. Huge timesaver.

New carts aren't high dollar, but my appetite for gear is more efficiently fed buying used. The 500 lb-rated structural foam versions below will do for motorcycling. Plastic doesn't beat up woodwork going in and out of doors where that matters.

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_material-handling+carts+service-carts

Adult diapers are great oil spill absorbent. Baking trays are ideal to place under your ride when working on it.

30k isn't high mileage....the reason "30k" sounds alarming is it's commonplace for retard owners to do one of two things:

1. slap on exhausts with no tuning, which makes the engine run lean (and they just leave it like that)

2. they do not perform routine valve clearance inspection/adjustment.

A bike with valve adjustments will easily last 100,000 miles before any issues. And to be honest, they can easily last longer depending on the engine type. The Ninja250 has very soft valves and the bike clocks out pretty much at 100,000km at which point you need to replace the engine. Something like a GSX-R you can just forget about it. You'll be dead before that engine dies. There are multiple people on both gixxer enthusiast boards and even here on /dbt/ with 160k+ miles on their bikes. those pieces of shit just go forever

Because at some point, all the "just a $100!" fixes build up and exceed the value of the bike, some owner doesn't adjust the valves and clean the carbs ever, or the bike accumulates so many dumb mods that it's left out of spec and never adjusted to compensate so it slowly rattles itself apart.

>so why is 30k miles high mileage on a bike then?

Because most people don't put serious miles on a motorcycle so that's considered high.

Modern (as in anything later than around 1980 with some exceptions prior) Jap street bikes give no fucks about going well over 100K miles if you do routine maintenance.

Any year BMW will do it. R65Anon can ride that thing until he's too old to hold it up, then put a light sidecar on it and ride some more. I don't really like post-Airhead BMWs because they ceased being elegantly simple, but Airheads rock. If you ever get inside one it looks like aircraft parts. They are made for easy maintenance. No draining, just pop the bail off the float bowl and dump it. I fit my FXR better or I'd get another Airhead. If R65Anon wants more torque he can bolt in the larger drivetrains and show no obvious clue that a transplant's been done. http://forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?65767-R65-with-r90-engine-concerns

What I see kill most motorcycles is improper storage and neglect. People who constantly ride have far fewer problems.

Any Anons in driving distance of Leeds, AL should visit. Euroanons fly to get there so no one else has an excuse. Plan at spending a full day at the museum alone. It has thousands of bikes and that's not a typo.

Tent camping for events is excellent and if you hammock camp the treeline is suitable. Totally cool atmosphere all around. Suitable for families if yours are into that.

The Vintage Festival is next week and don't let the name fool you. Everything on two wheels is represented. KTM show up for demo rides. The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club has a strong turnout. Barber is also home to a Porsche racing school (founder raced 'em) and a large Lotus collection. Bring comfy walking shoes, water and sunscreen.

hey gents,
just finished some long neglected yardwork.
I am tired, sweaty, and my hands smell like gasoline from fucking with the lawnmower. Seriously, why the fuck is my bike the only single cylinder I don't have to fuck with to get working?

Anyway: 0-4 = take shower and be bum; 5-9 go for a ride.

Hey /dbt/,

Why don't drag/race motorcycles just have one super tall gear? What is the point in shifting 1-6?

>>tfw found a very nice HGT for okay money but with blown headgasket
>>tfw not even many HGT for sale anymore
>where did it all go so wrong R65

Ignore HGT, get an R65! If you ever do blow a head gasket you can change it easily, and unlike Huskajunk parts are plentiful. You can have the head off an R65 in thirty minutes easily. It takes longer to clean the gasket surfaces for reinstallation than yank the head, and those surfaces are all easy.

The rule of owning odd delicate shit is have or get a fat personal parts stash including organ donor motorcycles. Get all the factory parts and service literature you can find, and being or making friends with a machinist. Become an expert since you won't find many and if they are older than you, they'll probably die first.

Of course after all this effort your beloved machine will eventually go obsolete from a performance aspect so you'd better enjoy riding that particular motorcycle a very long time.

dbt help me

bought this zxr400 today from a guy in london. rode it back home (took 3.5hrs). the entire time the temp gauge was literally off the scale hot for the entire journey. Didn't ride especially hard, cruised at an average of probably 85mph (which was like 8k rpm, it's only a babby 400)

anyway, point is.. is my thermostat broken? or maybe the actual thermo dial? surely after a ride of that length the engine would've blown up or something from overheating? It didnt feel especially hot between my legs? Have i buggered the bike? it ran perfectly the whole way? what do? any diagnostic things i can do to identify whether or not there is actually a problem?

first bike btw

for the first couple weeks.

I still enjoy riding immensely and it is the best part of every day, but the grin on my face has worn off.

I'm guessing using this thing everyday for 8-9 months should prepare me sufficiently for the test.
>>
>>15929080
radiator is pretty mucky yeah, but if it was actually cooling issue and the temp gauge wasn't just lying, surely I'd have felt something wrong with the engine? If the temp was genuinely off the charts then surely it would've broken down?
>>15929088

>>
>>15928956
You're in GA so riding all year is practical but most people are pussies and don't. I've been buying bikes in the GA/SC/NC area since forever and it's close enough to start looking.

If you use your Craigslist state link then open regions in tabs you can scan listings quickly everyday, and to switch to adjacent states you just change the state suffix.

https://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/ga

The key to bargains is get there quickly but don't look eager. People hate turning down dead Presidents. Post any you are considering for feedback.
>>
>>15929060
Check the coolant and thermostat. Check your oil for color because if looks like chocolate or snot that indicated possible gasket failure.

While theoretically not ideal in practice you can ride or drive many years without a thermostat. Been there, done that to the point I don't give a shit if there's one or not, but I don't live in the frozen North.

Google "zxr400 overheating". You'll see why. Remain calm and assume nothing.

A leakdown test can verify or eliminate blown head gaskets, but requires an air compressor and a leakdown tester which fits motorcycle spark plug holes.

http://www.zxrworld.co.uk/ is worth a look.
>>
>>15929203
If mucky, replace coolant now and watch for color changes. Blown head gaskets can change coolant color.
