To be fair it wasn't a bad system up until 2013. Up until that point you automatically upgraded to the next tier after two years with the previous one.
Now you have to re take the test 3 or 4 times, which is a lot of money btw. And it's infuriating if you consider that some schools use the same bike for both the A2 and A.

At least I'm turning 20 at the end of October and I've only been riding for 7 months. I can't imagine being 16 and being trapped to 15bhp for two years.

>>15919210
It makes me cry about how everyone complains about small bikes when I have loved them. I dont agree with the test thing for everytime you want to go up in a class. But I respect that it stops very new riders from doing stupid things on big bikes. I have been riding around 12 years. I still have yet to own something over a 600 but have ridden them.

>>
>>15919248
I don't disagree with forcing people to start small. But I think the categories could use some reworking. And the automatic upgrade needs to be brought back because the skill test is useless anyways. It proves you can ride the bike out of a parking lot but it doesn't really prepare you for the road.

Motocross bikes have to be rebuilt often because of the stress on the engine also that 50 hp at the wheel is bullshit btw, unless he dumped massive amounts of money into it.
>>
>>15919482
I don't know what he did exactly to it but I do know he doesn't have massive amounts of money. Still, up to 30~ish I think it's believable. Maybe he got confused by the dyno chart because some try to calculate hp at the crank based from what they get from the wheel and maybe that's the figure he thought was at the wheel.

In any case it ain't bad but still it sounds more trouble than it's worth.

Maybe if I move back to CO I can help him get it right. But it's been sitting for so long it's probably not really worth it

You can but it's not ideal. You're basically just dumping gas straight from the tank into the carb so your bike isn't gonna run great. I'd rebuild/replace the petcock and clean the carbs and see if that fixes it, my money is on it will.

What makes you excited to get on the bike?

I just took the MSF course, bought a bike and rode it around the parking lot but truth be told I'm more scared of it (ninja 300) than excited. I don't ride it because there's nowhere to ride around here but traffic (I live in a pretty congested city) and I don't have time to go out far to a big open area with wide open roads, not that im ready for the highway anyway

Do any of you have fun riding in the city or what?

>>15919543
That's how the first couple of weeks go but it gets better if you don't eat shit and die
>>
>>15919543
When I first got my bike (>>15919504) two months ago, I gave myself a literal, full-blown panic attack thinking about how I'm going to die riding it. I almost had to call out of work.

When I had it delivered I just paced around it for a solid 30 minutes afraid to get on. I eventually suited myself up and drove around my neighborhood for 45 minutes, working on my shifting and braking. I could hardly do either.

Through necessity, I rode the backstreets to work. Over the days of riding back and forth from work on calm streets the sheer terror abated to fear, to mild apprehension.

I got over my fear when I had to ride 45 miles to the next town over and back on main roads.
I still have that mild apprehension though, I don't want to lose it because I don't want to get cocky.

Anyway, now I'm zipping around town on that thing like it's no one's business and I have a blast doing it.
>>
>>15919543
Also riding in the city is fun if you can lanesplit. Otherwise it's like with a car but worse.

Cleaning a carb is basically just dunking it in carb cleaner. Ideally you also take it apart but if it's a complicated design maybe you shouldn't try it. Even complicated ones shouldn't be too hard though, just take notes of what you take apart and what goes where and reverse once you're done.

Can't do without lanesplitting. Also the roads are shit. Riding on a huge grid is boring. I prefer muh old european roads that twist and turn through hills and such. I don't want to have to ride out of the city to find good roads.

That may be true for some places like the Netherlands but if you go a bit south you can basically do what you want. South France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece. Motorbike ridership is much much higher because of the good weather and with lanesplitting being legal and road hoonage happens at maximum levels but unless you do it in front of a cop you probably won't get caught.

scooters come with hand rear brakes on the bars as standard and very rearward weight distributions so I'm actually not sure that's true.

They basically come set up for stunting from the factory.

yeah I don't get it, everyone on the roads here with supermotos just does wheelies on them, I don't know why they needed 17s for that. The bigger wheels would be better for general city shenanigans.

Granted if I was buying a tarmac dirtbike I'd go for the 17s but I'd probably just be going for something track only to go ride on short circuits/kart tracks etc. It would likely not see road use much.

If you're gonna ride almost exclusively in the city why not improve grip and handling for the tarmac. And at the end of the day if you want to go to dirt you put the original wheels on if you have not sold them.

Now if someone goes to dirt more often then they shouldn't go for the sumo conversion but I think it's worth it if you'll spend 90%+ of your time on asphalt. Also sumos look nicer.

Worst part is I fell for the supermoto meme when I bought my KLX. Spent $900 for these wheels and used them for my whole first year of riding on the road. I had my strips scrubbed off so I was at least turning more than most of the people who use them, but I switched to DS tires for my second year and have still been improving on my speed since last year. Too bad there's no kart tracks (or any tracks really) within 3 hours of here so I don't really get to take it out and really push myself on it all the time. Maybe I'll make a trip up to a track again this fall.

well because the grip and handling won't make a difference in the city because you're not taking corners near 1G. You can make it not turn sluggishly without buying another set of wheels.
Also dirt bikes don't really make good city commuters. Ask baird.

I would say skip the single cylinder enduro if you're riding almost exclusively on the street.

Yeah I think kart tracks are the way to go, I used to think sumos would be fun on a normal track but after riding an actual track on my SV you really want a sport bike, I'm spending a lot of time at full throttle on the SV so on a motard it'd be hellish, and those fast corners on a twitchy tard with 17s and the short gearing? nah thanks.

the problem with all cheap action cams is usually the codec, the sensor and lens on my xiaomi yi is actually really good, here's a still pic from it.

This turns to grainy mush as soon as you start taking video because the codec and software is no good.

Gopros have really good codecs and really good software, this is where they pull the quality advantage over it's competitor and why I'd suggest a second hand gopro over any chink cam (outside of the xiaomi yi 4k)

Simple, easy, riding. The first time I rode outside of my MSF course it was within my dad's junkyard. Just a couple of circles for a few minutes then called it a day (it wasn't road ready anyways, it was missing the front fairing and headlamp). I finished patching it up that week, then rode it around some warehouses in a Sunday afternoon, when they were completely dead and there was no traffic. Finally, I rode around some easy, straight streets with no curves and have slowly worked myself to not getting terrified of turning.

There's two roundabouts on campus that I need to take and they still scare me quite a bit though. I'm still working on that.

>>
>>15919500
Ignore the other two replies.

OP has a VACUUM petcock which is not working for some reason but that reason sure as fuck isn't a carb adjustment. Prime position bypasses the vacuum-actuated valve.

Since he didn't post YEAR/MAKE/MODEL I can't point him to a petcock or a rebuild kit.

This is the only place on the internet where posters treat their vehicle specs as secret.

It's also possible that the vacuum hose to the petcock is disconnected or kinked.

If OP posts a clear pic of his petcock and the rubber vacuum hose connecting it to the intake we can help him.

It's not expensive to fix.

You can run your bike on Prime as long as you like, but don't forget to shut it off when parked! Fuel valves worked this way long before vacuum faggotry hit the scene. I despise vacuum petcocks and replace them on my personal bikes.

>>
>>15920438
>Is it rideable
Maybe.

Here's a quick fix for clogged carbs:

>Remove seat and tank
>Undo little bolts on the very bottom of carbs, these are float bowl drain plugs.
Expect gas to pour out of them btw
>Unscrew diaphragm covers on carbs (plates on the top)
Be careful with these because they're spring loaded normally.
>GENTLY reach under rubber diaphragm, grab brass/steel cylinder in the middle and slide it up and out of the carb
Depending on how dirty the carbs are old gas might make the cylinder stick in the carb, so if it does spray some cleaner down the sides and gently wiggle and tap it until it loosens up. DO NOT PULL BY THE RUBBER DIAPHRAGM IT WILL FUCK YOUR CARB AND THEY'RE LIKE $120 TO REPLACE
>Take carb cleaner with straw nozzle and shove it down cavity where cylinder once was into little hole at the bottom of venturi
This is the main jet btw
>Little straw nozzle should fit in more or less. Then spray carb cleaner into carb until the float bowl is ~50% full of carb cleaner
>repeat for all carbs
>Prime fuel system
>Force bike to start and let it run like shit until all carb cleaner runs out of carbs
Should clean any minor leaks. If it's something else you're gonna have to pull the carbs off and rebuild them, but google should easily help you take care of that.

Read this:

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=58895.0

You should be able to take the pic to a Yamaha dealer to match up the petcock. Many such parts are made by the same subcontractors such as Keihin (who even made carbs for Harley-Davidson).

I run Pingel fuel valves on my Harleys. One has been in constant use since 1988 and only needed a reseal last year.

GS example:

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=17129.0

DO NOT USE BLUE RTV SEALANT for fuel like the poster did. Follow the Pingel instructions for installation. If you must make a gasket for the adapter plate, the heavy gray gasket paper at auto stores is suitable.
>>
>>15920344
Drain the tank and carbs before you start taking shit apart. That often works and there's no sense cleaning carbs then refilling them with shit fuel.

See your factory service manual (Ha! I kid! This is 4chan and I'm the only one with a manual.) for info.

Now if you'd typed your YEAR, MAKE and MODEL I could have posted more useful info.

That works better if you bring a glass jar full of whatever filth comes out of your fuel tank.

BTW to drain tank properly, remove tank from bike, go outdoors away from ignition sources, remove the petcock and dump the tank. Petocks do not normally drain fuel tanks completely due to tank shape.

If you need a cheap, reliable inline fuel valve and don't mind the looks, these Briggs and Stratton classics work great. I use them on mowers and my motorcycle test tank. You can buy bags of them on Ebay. Not everyone has Pingel money.

>Had to get carbs rebuilt, how fucked am I when I have to pay!?!?!?!?!?!

It's a fair amount of labor, but since YEAR, MAKE and MODEL are secret it's hard to help.

Some bikes are hideous to access carbs for removal and installation, others are easy. Number of carbs matters as does availability of rebuild kits. Harleys are the easiest, while V-fours are often a motherfucker. If you have CV carbs and they need diaphragms that's more money. A shop has to charge labor and it's several hours work.

Very useful. There's plenty of info on doing those including a Youtube video. You can also benefit from similar CVK carb illustrations.

I suggest cleaning them yourself and installing an inline fuel filter.
Your low speed jet may be clogged since they are usually first to get shit in them, being the smallest orifice in the carb.

Before tearing them apart I would remove the carbs, remove the float bowls (working over a light colored plastic tray or tub is wise) then remove and clean the jets. Just blowing through them doesn't always do the job.

Good jet pic of a CVK with low speed jet below main jet. Use a good fitting screwdriver, "hollow ground" tip like gunsmith screwdrivers or screwdriver bits.

https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/25362143/print/true/single/true.cfm

Google video search "KEIHIN CVK 34" for many videos of these common carbs.
>>
>>15920576
Depends on how rusty. Many tanks have some rust. You can recoat yours as well as a shop can do it. They buy the same kits. AVOID KREEM! That shit's famous for peeling off and fouling fuel systems.

https://www.amazon.com/Red-Kote-Quart-Sealer-Diesel/dp/B009X0JOSM has a good rep but I've not used it. My restorationbros like the stuff. Since most of my bikes are Harleys I just replace rusted tanks.

Unless the inside of your tank is hideous I'd just run a fuel filter. Shit that doesn't pass the filter isn't a problem, and nothing large enough to matter should pass the filter.

It's really difficult to seal a tank unless you have it derusted at a radiator shop or otherwise take it to bare metal. Just because it looks rusty doesn't make it much of a threat. Corrosion only causes two problems. Leaks, and clogged carbs. Filters solve the carb problem.

>>15920613

2003 honda rebel

Ya could have mentioned the displacement. I'll assume 250.

Probably a couple hundred for removal, cleaning and install.

You'd be wise to do that yourself because it's easy. I like Rebels. They were a brilliant engine design and are a fine learner bike. It's not hard to remove the carbs, remove the bowls, clean the jets and reinstall. Your Honda dealer should have any rebuild kits you need in stock.

K&L rebuild kits work well.

Part number:
Honda 96-06 CMX250 Rebel 91-07 CB250 Nighthawk K&L Carburetor Repair Kit 18-4929

Good forum:

I just noticed some brand new aftermarket Honda Rebel carbs on Ebay for less than a hundred buck per set. Not sure of pedigree but that price is nice. Check forums before buying though they are probably fine.

Today was entertaining. Customer brought in a 1988 Sportster rolling basket case with a mixed-year fruit salad of parts he wants installed.

Guy he bought it from lost most of the fasteners and hacked the wiring to shit so I get to make a custom harness and sort that out. Wiring is fun so no problem but he may not like the bill. Customer is in love with an LED turn signal conversion with integrated running and brake light functions that year never came with. That would be fine but he gets all his parts from his salvage buddy who doesn't speak fluent Harley aftermarket. LED rear signals and incandescent front signals may or may not work with whatever light integration module he brings in because of differing resistance. He's convinced he's a genius so I don't argue.

Anyone else with brain-dead customer stories?
