You probably get these types of questions a lot, but I'm 20 and don't have a drivers license (neither bike nor car) and am wanting to get one, every year around this time I get really interested in bike videos, etc. and nothing ever comes of it.

Besides controls, which I think I can only really learn while on a bike (not owning a car I don't really understand the mechanics of the clutch, but I understand your gear controls are on your left, throttle and brakes on your right, hold clutch and 0 throttle while changing gears, half click up is neutral, down is 1st, full up clicks is 2nd, 3rd, etc.)

Anyway, besides the controls, my other big sticking point is maintenance. How much of a pain are motorbikes to maintain? I just did some quick googling and people are saying to check tire pressure every single petrol stop, lubing your chain every day after riding, checking the fucking electrolyte level of your battery every 2 weeks, and that's just the easy shit that doesn't involve taking the bike apart which I'd be utterly inept at. Not sure if this is reality or of it's because these bike websites get a commission on how much oil and grease they push from suppliers and so they overprescribe it.

Part of the reason I want to get a bike is how cheap they are (compared to cars), and especially the petrol mileage, since I'll have no passengers or gear to carry that won't fit in a backpack. That and potentially get into some touring, although I don't know if that'll ever be a reality.

Bikes aren't that cheap to get into if you do it properly and get decent gear, contrary to popular belief.

Bike maintenance depends purely on the bike itself.

Most road bikes will need an oil and oil filter change every 3-5k kilometres, valves checked (and adjusted as/if needed) every 15-20k (says in the manual of the specific bike the exact interval) and tyres anywhere from 3-15k depending on what ones you get.

Chain adjustment is on an as needed basis, you should keep an eye on the tension of the chain so it doesn't get too slack.

I lube my chain every hundred or so kays, probably should clean it too but I don't have a paddock stand so eh.

If you can't do something then take it to a proper bike mechanic to get it done, rather than neglecting it until it bites you in the ass. Most bike mechanics should offer free chain adjustments so there's no excuse not to get it done.

I've never had to dick around with batteries or fuck around with carbs but I don't let my bike sit for long periods of time so eh.

It's exxagerated what you read/wrote in your post.
You have to change oil every year or 5000-7500km, check tire pressure from time to time (I do it at every gas stop because my front loses air a bit), and lube the chain every 500km or so or when you rode in rain (I don't know exactly because my bike doesn't have a chain)
these are all very easy to do and they even make fun in my opinion
of course all of this is considering you have a bike in good shape which is not unreliable

Yeah, it's just a money sink. I'd be happy to get rid of 1 and reluctantly get rid of another in my lineup, I have two that are never going anywhere. I think 3 is ideal but I rarely have that few.

My problem with bikes is I want to scratch all the bike itches, I'm sure I'd do fine with 9 but they'd rotate with a few that stay all the time. My biggest issue right now is 4 of my 5 are dirt bikes kek

On Thursday, just off the motorway at Milton Keynes, I saw a couple of bikes that looked a lot like mini Africa Twins, they were in tricolor with gold rims but were definitely smaller than a standard CRF1000L and were fairly easy to catch up to (obviously, they could have been taking it easy).

I don't know if they had twin headlights or not because I only really got a good look from the back and sides but they were definitely done up in the same livery as a tricolor CRF1000L. The exhausts looked like the ones on the CB500X/F/R.

Any ideas?

Went ahead and went along with my idea and picked up a '16 Honda Interceptor/VFR800.

Yes but that is because I think even a person of average size looks foolish on a 250 since they're also very slim. If you're about dirt bikes I would recommend a 450 at least, with an appropriate seat height so your knees won't touch your chin while driving.
